Thermal Degradation Analysis Of Bagasse Fibers From Sugarcane Waste, Rashmitha Suresh, Faisal Al Nasser Jul 2026

Thermal Degradation Analysis Of Bagasse Fibers From Sugarcane Waste, Rashmitha Suresh, Faisal Al Nasser

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

Sugarcane is one of the important commodities in the industry where bagasse fiber as waste is abundantly available.   Sugarcane bagasse fiber has high cellulose, a key element in the utilization of bagasse. Chemical pretreatment is important to prepare the natural fiber before used as composite reinforcement. The purpose of the study is to analyze the thermal degradation of bagasse fiber after being treated using NaOH and TEMPO solution. The manufacturing method was carried out by a series of washing bagasse with distilled water and NaOH solution, subsequently soaking it in 6% NaOH and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-l-oxyl (TEMPO) solution, and conducted oven-dried. Thermogravimetric …

Integrating Georeferencing And Fire Anatomy Modeling In Canyon Fire Experiments Using Thermal Uav Remote Sensing, Xiangyu Ren, Bo Yang, Alexander I. Filkov, Katherine M. Wilkin, C. David Benterou, Owen Hussey, Craig B. Clements

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Background: Wildfires profoundly impact ecosystems and human health, making them a critical research focus. Drone-mounted Thermal Infrared (TIR) sensors are widely used for active fire monitoring due to their ability to penetrate smoke and capture real-time fire dynamics. Aims: This study addresses the challenges of georeferencing TIR data accurately, caused by limited fire anatomy modeling, imprecise georeferencing, the coarse resolution of TIR imagery and the dynamic nature of fire behavior. Methods: We collected a one-hour TIR dataset capturing a fast-moving controlled fire in a California canyon, US, alongside auxiliary data of multispectral and in situ meteorological observations. We developed an …

Midsouth Entomologist

The two-spined trap-jaw ant, Odontomachus haematodus (Linnaeus), is native to South America and was introduced to the United States via Mobile, Alabama in the mid-twentieth century. Misidentification as a native congener for several decades has inhibited the study of the ecology of O. haematodus in its introduced range within the Gulf Coastal Plain. We conducted a multimethod survey to: 1) assess the abundance of O. haematodus across urban parks in Hattiesburg, MS, the northernmost published record in this species’ exotic range, 2) establish which sampling methodologies are most effective for conducting urban surveys of O. haematodus, and 3) study …

Black American Cemeteries And Our Need For The Stories They Tell, Vincent H. Melomo Jul 2026

Black American Cemeteries And Our Need For The Stories They Tell, Vincent H. Melomo

Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society

In recent decades, there have been increasing efforts to recognize, protect, and restore Black American historic cemeteries. At the same time, many of the historic communities in which these cemeteries lie have become increasingly gentrified. As the built environment has been reconstructed, communities have been displaced and histories erased. Nevertheless, historic cemeteries remain as stubborn and defiant reminders of those histories and provide an opportunity to challenge those erasures. This paper will tell the story of historic cemeteries in Raleigh, North Carolina, addressing key aspects of their histories, highlighting racial inequalities. It will address some of the challenges confronted by …

Before The Gravestones: Uncovering The Past Of The Jonesville Historic African American Cemetery, Najiyah Williams Jul 2026

Before The Gravestones: Uncovering The Past Of The Jonesville Historic African American Cemetery, Najiyah Williams

Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society

This research investigates the Jonesville Cemetery, a historic African American cemetery located on the Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, Georgia. Once a cemetery to a thriving freedman town, the Jonesville Cemetery was neglected for decades. Even though the cemetery is currently being maintained through joint volunteer effort between military personnel and community members, the cemetery still sits in the middle of the woods with a plethora of marked and unmarked graves. This mixture of marked and unmarked graves is also coupled with an inconsistency in the documentation of burials through death certificates. Due to years of community members coming …

This paper mobilizes the concept of the choreography of surfing to analyze networks of surfers, media creators, digital technologies, and development NGOs through which surfing becomes a device for sociopolitical and economic projects in Peru. Surf media, this paper’s object of analysis, includes all films, video blogs, and documents that incorporate surfing as a constitutive ingredient in their visual and discursive content. With the rise of online video-sharing platforms, surf media has become a digital world unto itself. This world is made through interactions among viewers, photographers, and their surfing subjects. Democratization of video-sharing platforms capacitates filmmakers to break from …

Tourism, Security, And Sacred Space At Bethany Beyond The Jordan, Olivia Stockwell Jul 2026

Tourism, Security, And Sacred Space At Bethany Beyond The Jordan, Olivia Stockwell

Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society

Bethany Beyond the Jordan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site advertised as the baptismal site of Jesus of Nazareth, lies on the border between Jordan and the occupied West Bank. Based on first-person observation, this article provides a semiotic analysis of how tourist spaces, commodification, and security infrastructure interact to create perceptions of sacred space. When placed in conversation with the historical and political contexts of the site, these factors provide insight into how meanings of sacrality are generated. I argue that notions of the sacred at Bethany Beyond the Jordan are shaped by tourism spaces and their organizing of ritual …

Shrooming Ahead: How The U.S. Is Marching Toward Psilocybin Legalization And What Other Countries May Learn, Titus Scheid

Florida Journal of International Law

The United States is traveling with momentum toward a statutory framework in which the consumption of psilocybin for therapeutic purposes is legal. The psychedelic substance has already been legalized or decriminalized in several cities and states. Most countries, however, have seen no such movement toward legalization. This Note explores how the U.S. psilocybin movement could become a model for other countries to follow suit. Despite long-standing federal roadblocks, the U.S. is starting to excel in terms of individual activism, non-profit organization campaigning, and private investment.

Although psilocybin is subject to widely differing legal treatments throughout the world, it is undeniably …

Locating Bitcoin: Jurisdictional Challenges And Solutions In Digital Asset Law, Ethan Gibson Jul 2026

Locating Bitcoin: Jurisdictional Challenges And Solutions In Digital Asset Law, Ethan Gibson

Florida Journal of International Law

As Bitcoin penetrates the global financial system, its legal classification becomes crucial for determining the appropriate substantive law in both public international law and private international law. This Note argues that Bitcoin, a decentralized digital commodity, is analogous to tangible, movable property for purposes of defining prescriptive jurisdiction. Bitcoin’s unique attributes—its inherent value and rivalrous nature—qualify it as digital, yet tangible property, and suggests that it can have a physical situs. The property’s situs can determine which jurisdiction’s substantive law can apply. By examining different Bitcoin custody models, including single-key wallets, multi-signature wallets, and brain wallets, this Note explores the …

Wto "Chapeau" Jurisprudence And Its Discontent, Julia Y. Qin Jul 2026

Wto "Chapeau" Jurisprudence And Its Discontent, Julia Y. Qin

Florida Journal of International Law

This Article examines WTO’s jurisprudence on the introductory clause (the “chapeau”) of the general exceptions in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS). These general exceptions allow WTO members to depart from GATT and GATS obligations in order to pursue specific nontrade policies, such as public health and the environment. In practice, it has proven difficult for countries to invoke the general exceptions successfully. One major obstacle has been the chapeau requirement of nondiscrimination, which, under jurisprudence developed by WTO’s Appellate Body (AB), has become the final barrier for the …

Contributions Of Climate Finance And Human Rights Responsibilities In Shaping A North-South Outbound Climate Fdi Promotion Commitment, Zaker Ahmad Jul 2026

Contributions Of Climate Finance And Human Rights Responsibilities In Shaping A North-South Outbound Climate Fdi Promotion Commitment, Zaker Ahmad

Florida Journal of International Law

The distribution of global climate finance is unjust, due to it concentrating on developed nations while leaving developing countries facing a growing shortfall of funds. This Article advocates for incentivizing climate-friendly outbound foreign direct investment (OFDI) from developed to developing countries (i.e., North to South) as a potential solution to this persistent challenge. It demonstrates that additional normative support for such a proposition can be drawn from climate change and human rights legal regimes. Under the climate regime, developed countries remain under a strict obligation to provide financial support. In the human rights regime, recent jurisprudential development shows that the …

Sex Differences And Cytokine Profiles In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ella Margaret Bartley Miss Jul 2026

Sex Differences And Cytokine Profiles In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ella Margaret Bartley Miss

International Undergraduate Journal of Health Sciences

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterised by persistent inflammation, joint destruction, and notable differences in prevalence and severity between sexes. Elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), are well established mediators of RA pathology. Although extensive research has elucidated their pathological roles, the influence of sex on cytokine profiles and RA outcomes remains undefined.

This review examines preclinical and clinical studies analysing sex-specific cytokine responses in RA. Findings reveal that female patients and experimental models exhibit higher concentrations of pro-inflammatory mediators, with oestrogen and androgen signalling playing relevant …

The Impact Of Abortion Laws On The Rights Of Future Generations In Climate Change Litigation, Laura Chiu

Florida Journal of International Law

In their own respects, the United States of America, the Republic of Korea (Korea), and India are three vastly different countries, and their differences are also apparent within their respective legal systems and the legal protections, or lack of, in place on abortion. Throughout the years, these three countries have shifted in three distinct directions with their abortion laws. The United States has regressed in its protection of the right to an abortion. Korea has recently decriminalized abortion for the first time in 2021. And India has continued to pass increasingly progressive abortion laws and abortion rulings over the years …

Emancipation, Decolonization, And Gender In The Context Of African Integration, Luwam Dirar Jul 2026

Emancipation, Decolonization, And Gender In The Context Of African Integration, Luwam Dirar

Florida Journal of International Law

The 1960s institutionalization and formalization of Africa’s continental integration was a manifestation of the ontological fragility of the concept of emancipation in the African context. As a concept, continental emancipation excluded concerns of women and formalized the divorce between decolonization and racial domination on the one hand and social emancipatory movements on the other. This divorce was contrary to the expectation of women who sought the end of colonial subjugation as a turning point for women’s emancipation from not only colonial and racial domination but also from social oppression. This Article argues that the continental emancipation project betrayed the hopes …
