Understanding The Gaming Disorder–Depression Co-Occurrence: A Narrative Literature Review, An-Pyng Sun, Stephanie Diez
Understanding The Gaming Disorder–Depression Co-Occurrence: A Narrative Literature Review, An-Pyng Sun, Stephanie Diez
Social Work Faculty Research
Because gaming disorder (GD) often co-occurs with depression, understanding how both disorders work together enables clinicians to better treat individuals with GD–depression comorbidity. The extant literature on GD–depression comorbidity is unsystematic and contradictory, with some studies suggesting depression predicts GD but not vice versa, some claiming GD predicts depression but not vice versa, and some proposing a bidirectional relationship between the two. The goal of this narrative review is to explore and organize these findings to establish a holistic and coherent conceptual framework that explains how GD co-occurs with depression.

Impacts Of Climate Change On Vertical Migration Of Zooplankton Species, Camila Rimoldi Ibañez
Impacts Of Climate Change On Vertical Migration Of Zooplankton Species, Camila Rimoldi Ibañez
Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Journal
Vertical migration in marine and freshwater environments stands as one of Earth’s largest daily animal movements concerning biomass. It serves as a crucial life pump, shaping phytoplankton grazing patterns, facilitating nutrient transport through the water column, and providing vital sustenance for deep-water organisms lacking access to surface phytoplankton. Despite enduring millennia of climatic shifts, contemporary anthropogenic climate change surpasses historical rates of change, posing unprecedented challenges. Climate-induced phenomena increasingly affect various species, including vertical migrators. This paper delves into Diel Vertical Migration’s ecological significance and anticipates detrimental effects of climate change on individual animals’ physiology and migration patterns. Foremost, rising …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Voicing Systems In Tagalog And Hiligaynon, Ty Craaybeek
Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Journal
Tagalog and Hiligaynon are both languages from the Philippines that use the unique Philippine-style topic marking system. This system illustrates a special relationship between the verb and the subject or object through an affix marking focus. Tagalog is well-studied, but there is much debate on its voicing system. Hiligaynon and its voicing system are understudied. This paper explores the voicing system in both languages to better understand their similarities. Tagalog and Hiligaynon have related voicing systems, however, Tagalog uses five voices, separating the beneficiary and locative voices, while Hiligaynon has four, combining these two voices into the referential voice. Even …

Fast Fashion: Discovering American Consumers' Opinions, Ava Vignola
Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Journal
The effects of fast fashion range from human rights violations to environmental devastation. This study uncovers the views of Americans on fast fashion. It was expected to find that many Americans prioritize price when shopping, due to the growth of these companies. The study had 193 people complete a questionnaire on Amazon Turk that contained 16 questions. It found that most Americans consider the price to be more important than the ethics when shopping, with there being a statistically significant difference (p < .001) in that older consumers are more likely to prioritize price. It also found that males are more likely to disagree than females with the statement that fast fashion is unethical (p < .001). This data can be used to create marketing strategies to encourage American consumers to purchase from sustainable companies.

Dissatisfaction And Residual Symptoms In Younger And Older Adult Patients After Total Knee Arthroplasty, Nicholas Pohl, Parker Brush, Adrian Santana, Sebastian Fras, Eleanor Jenkins, Arjun Saxena
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers
INTRODUCTION: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is an increasingly used treatment option for younger patients with osteoarthritis. Previous research has found only 66% patients < 60 years who underwent TKA postoperatively reported that their knees felt normal. However, the prior studies did not compare underlying causes for dissatisfaction based on age. This study compared the satisfaction and residual symptom rates between patients ages < 60 and ≥60 years and identified specific reasons for their dissatisfaction between the age groups.
METHODS: Patients who underwent unilateral TKA for osteoarthritis from 2014 to 2016 were electronically sent a 15-question survey pertaining to surgery satisfaction. Following patient identification and survey completion, patient demographics, medical history, surgical time, and length of stay were collected through manual review of medical records. Patients who completed surveys were grouped by age (< 60 years or ≥60 years) for analysis.
RESULTS: In total, 1189 ≥ 60-year-old patients and 388 < 60-year-old patients were included. Most patients in both cohorts reported satisfaction with overall knee function (< 60: 68.6%; ≥60: 71.8%; P = 0.175). Fewer < 60-year patients reported normal knee function (66.5% vs. 75.2%; P < 0.001). The most common residual symptom in both cohorts was continued pain.
CONCLUSION: Patients younger than 60 years reported less satisfaction with performing normal activities …
Effect Of Bond Strength Variation And Ionizing Radiation On Mutations In Cytosine-Guanine Islands, Joshua Robert Bedwell, Yan Poniatovskyi, Vola Andrianarijaona
Effect Of Bond Strength Variation And Ionizing Radiation On Mutations In Cytosine-Guanine Islands, Joshua Robert Bedwell, Yan Poniatovskyi, Vola Andrianarijaona
Achieve
Ionizing radiation produces free electrons within cells which then ionizes DNA and has the potential to cause carcinogenic mutations. Cytosine-Guanine (CpG) islands are regions that are rich in cytosine and guanine bases and are common sites of single point mutations and strand breaks. In this study, density function theory (DFT) is used to calculate the potential energy of DNA nucleotide dimers varying bond lengths in five different ionized states. Crossing between two ionized states can be seen in the potential energy curves, indicating the possibility of natural transition between the two states. Potential energy curves are used to determine bond …

Analyzing The Strength Of The Amine Bond Of Guanine Via Potential Curve Analysis: A Computational Approach, Yan Poniatovskyi, Joshua Robert Bedwell, Vola Andrianarijaona
Achieve
The deamination of guanine can be a cause of single point DNA mutations. In this study, the strength of the amine bond was examined using DFT and B3LYP to map out the bond’s potential curves under conditions of various charges being imposed on the molecule. Such an approach yielded a few potential curves that do not exhibit the expected behavior and rather, show crossings in potential energy curves. Discussions regarding the suspected causes of these unexpected behaviors are included in the poster presentation. The Mulliken charge analysis of guanine under these conditions is coherent with the proposition that the deamination …

An Educational Intervention Focused On Identifying Adverse Childhood Experiences, Laconia Bacon
An Educational Intervention Focused On Identifying Adverse Childhood Experiences, Laconia Bacon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) refer to traumatic childhood experiences that individuals may have been exposed to during their youth, such as child maltreatment, domestic violence, or interparental violence. Research has demonstrated that experiencing ACEs in childhood may result in physical and mental illnesses that led to dangerous lifestyle patterns in adulthood. In the local organization, several patients with ACEs presented in the emergency department (ED). The nurses, unaware of ACEs, were unable to detect and respond to the consequences of ACEs. Thus, the purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to determine whether an educational intervention focused …
