Equity Gaps In Information Literacy: A Case Study And Methodological Exploration, Sarah P.C. Dahlen, Joy Hopkins Camp Sep 2025

Equity Gaps In Information Literacy: A Case Study And Methodological Exploration, Sarah P.C. Dahlen, Joy Hopkins Camp

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Equity gaps are disparities in educational outcomes and access to opportunities that are rooted in systemic inequities. Higher education has been attentive to equity gaps in course grades, grade point average, and graduation and retention rates, but less so to gaps in specific academic outcomes. This study investigates how equity gaps can be measured in information literacy, a core academic competency, by conducting a case study using rubric scores of student papers. Various measures of equity gaps are employed and evaluated to provide guidance for future work in this area. While no equity gaps were identified in this sample, considerations …

Generative Ai Risks And Resilience: How Users Adapt To Hallucination And Privacy Challenges, Joon Soo Lim

Media Studies - All Scholarship

Purpose

This study examines two central risks affecting continued use of generative AI (GenAI)—AI hallucinations and privacy concerns—and explores how protective behaviors serve as adaptive mechanisms to mitigate these risks.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on Protection Motivation Theory, the study tests a risk-adaptive GenAI use model using survey data from 789 users recruited via a Prolific panel. Structural equation modeling is employed to analyze direct and moderating effects.

Findings

Privacy concerns negatively influence user attitudes while positively predicting both personal and system-level protective behaviors. Hallucination risk is similarly associated with negative attitudes but positively predicts information verification. Notably, only information verification significantly …

The “Founder’S Gaze”: How The Fourth Amendment Is A Surveillance Technology That Enables Ai To Scale Control Over The Subaltern, Diego H. Alcalá Laboy

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

Much has been written about the rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning applications and how the current Fourth Amendment law has been unable to mitigate the privacy harm that these tools produce. This article explores how the development and usage of AI and machine learning models is dependent on the originalism principles of Fourth Amendment Law. Utilizing Critical Surveillance Studies and Anticolonial Theory, I posit that the Fourth Amendment is a surveillance technology that categorizes conduct, persons, and places to impose the material conditions for the subjugation of historically minoritized communities within the United States. Furthermore, this article explores …

Curing The Peasant's Disease : Frank Oldt’S Work And Research On Hookworm Disease In South China, 1905-1926, Jiaying Fu

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

While current scholarship on “hygienic modernity” in China focuses on the construction of urban health systems and institutional infrastructures, this study proposes an alternative analytical lens by foregrounding the domain of agricultural health. It aims to investigate how early twentieth-century medical researchers uncovered public health models grounded in China’s agrarian conditions. Taking the case of Frank Oldt (1879–1976), a medical missionary living in Guangdong between 1905 and 1926, this research examines how he identified, interpreted, and sought to mitigate the problem of hookworm disease—a parasitic condition intricately linked to China’s farming practices and rural environmental conditions.

Specifically, this thesis aims …

Nothing To Gain: The Disparate Impact Of The Capital Gains Tax Preference On Women And Persons Of Color, Ann M. Murphy Sep 2025

Nothing To Gain: The Disparate Impact Of The Capital Gains Tax Preference On Women And Persons Of Color, Ann M. Murphy

Nevada Law Journal

Tax preference provisions are scattered across the Internal Revenue Code, and the capital gains tax rate offers an enormous advantage for wealthy taxpayers. When first enacted, it was touted as eliminating the “lock-in effect” which caused investors to hold on to their investment property. Today, it is justified as encouraging investment and eliminating gains produced merely by the passage of time. The provision’s unequal benefits are hidden from the picture. Although not overtly dis-criminatory, the preference operates as a tax cut for the wealthy. Women and per-sons of color see little benefit from the lower tax rate. The difficulty of …

Getting It Just Right: The Goldilocks Level Of Securities Regulation, David Nows Sep 2025

Getting It Just Right: The Goldilocks Level Of Securities Regulation, David Nows

Nevada Law Journal

Across the world, developed economies use roughly the same framework to regulate entrepreneurial ventures raising capital. The minor differences in how developed countries regulate securities for emerging businesses lie primarily in their legal thresholds for fundraising caps, disclosure requirements, and the criteria for accredited investors. This uniform regulatory framework persists despite significant empirical evidence that the citizens of developed countries vary widely in their desire to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities, their perceptions of the number and quality of entrepreneurial opportunities available to them, and their perceptions of their own ability to succeed in entrepreneurship. This Article advocates for a new approach …

Enhancing Internet Of Things (Iot) Network Security: A Machine Learning-Driven Framework For Real-Time Intrusion Detection And Anomaly Classification, Loiy Alsbatin, Firas Zawaideh, Basem Mohamad Alrifai, Tareq A. Alawneh, Tareq A. Alawneh

Mesopotamian Journal of CyberSecurity

The rapid proliferation of IoT devices presents serious IoT network cybersecurity threats; hence, advanced IDSs are necessary. Signature and rule-based IDS mechanisms cannot address novel attacks, generate excessive alarms, and are computationally inefficient. Therefore, in response, in this paper, a machine learning IDS for IoT network real-time intrusion detection and anomaly categorization is proposed via black widow optimization (BWO) for optimal feature and hyperparameter selection. The IDS employs standard machine learning models, such as random forest and support vector machines (SVMs), and deep models, such as long short-term memory (LSTM), to address IoT environment nuances. The framework is evaluated on …

Price Adjustment Clauses: Enhanced Price Volatility Forecasting For Construction Materials, Ahmed Shiha, Mariam Elazhary, Islam H. El-Adaway Sep 2025

Price Adjustment Clauses: Enhanced Price Volatility Forecasting For Construction Materials, Ahmed Shiha, Mariam Elazhary, Islam H. El-Adaway

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Price adjustment clauses (PACs) are used by state departments of transportation (DOTs) to share the risk of material price fluctuations. Existing models that depict the price fluctuations of materials forecast a mean within a horizon while relying on the assumption of a constant volatility throughout that horizon. However, none of them examine whether the prices of construction material exhibit similar volatility following a sudden price surge or a price drop. The prospect of PACs and their associated trigger values is hindered in the absence of empirical assessments of their capacity to capture the volatilities in material prices. This paper fills …

The God Prompt And Deus Ex Machina: Techno-Theological Tropes And Operational Metaphors In Generative Media, James Hutson Sep 2025

The God Prompt And Deus Ex Machina: Techno-Theological Tropes And Operational Metaphors In Generative Media, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This study reframes two durable tropes—the ―God Prompt‖ and the deus ex machina—as analytic lenses for understanding how contemporary generative systems stage beginnings and endings of cultural production. The ―God Prompt‖ denotes command-driven synthesis in which minimal textual instructions instantiate content on demand, crystallizing a production loop of input, model execution, and post hoc evaluation that orients anticipation toward instantaneous yield and controllable variation. The deus ex machina names an externally imposed resolution that interrupts causal development—historically a crane-borne god, functionally an algorithmic override—thereby concentrating attention on closure mechanics rather than world-building continuity. Read together, the pair offers a compact …

Exact And Approximate Conformal Inference For Multi-Output Regression, Chancellor Johnstone, Eugene Ndiaye Sep 2025

Exact And Approximate Conformal Inference For Multi-Output Regression, Chancellor Johnstone, Eugene Ndiaye

Faculty Publications

It is common in machine learning to estimate a response y given covariate information x . However, these predictions alone do not quantify any uncertainty associated with said predictions. One way to overcome this deficiency is with conformal inference methods, which construct a set containing the unobserved response with a prescribed probability. Unfortunately, even with a one-dimensional response, conformal inference is computationally expensive despite recent encouraging advances. In this paper, we explore multi-output regression, delivering exact derivations of conformal inference p-values when the predictive model can be described as a linear function of y . Additionally, we introduce a multivariate …
