Historically, the cultural industries of the Global South have been relegated in the face of North American and European production predominance. In Latin America, the most internationally successful audiovisual productions, both at the cinema ticket window and festivals, usually deal with stereotypes of extreme poverty, rurality, delinquency, terrorism, and drug trafficking, which, in the collective imagination of foreign audiences, promote an exaggerated representation of the region's social problems, contributing to xenophobia, hate speech, and anti-migration discourses in countries in the Global North. This study conducts an analysis of five emblematic feature films of Latin American cinema: Cidade de Deus [ …

Use Of Perioperative Scores In Predicting Postoperative Event And Selection For Discharge After Elective Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Brian Nyamweya Bundi
Master of Medicine in General Surgery
Background: While daycare laparoscopic cholecystectomy is gaining momentum in developed countries, a majority of patients in low and middle-income countries are admitted overnight. This safety precaution offers prompt access to emergency services should need arise. This precautional overnight stay has implications on cost, healthcare utilization and patient satisfaction. Daycare procedures routinely utilize scoring systems for assessing discharge readiness. We explored the utility of the modified Surgical APGAR Score (mSAS) and the White Fast Track Score (WFTS) as predictors for postoperative events and their role in identifying patients who can have a safe daycare discharge after laparoscopic cholecystectomy in this retrospective …

Background: Parkinson’s disease is a challenging, progressive neurodegenerative process projected to affect more than 1.2 million patients by 2030, with an economic burden that will surpass $79 billion annually in the United States. Pharmacological interventions are the hallmark of treatment for symptom management for this lifelong disease. Multiple medications and a variety of dosing times have an increasingly negative effect on medication adherence. Purpose: This article will discuss medication adherence challenges, describe a theory-guided evidence-based intervention to improve medication adherence, and explore the economic implications in an outpatient clinic setting. Methods: A pilot chart review of 40 cases over 30 …

Crypto Regulation In The Time Of Trump, Lawrence J. Trautman
Crypto Regulation In The Time Of Trump, Lawrence J. Trautman
Michigan Technology Law Review
Donald Trump’s election as president during November 2024 results in perhaps the most dramatic philosophical change in approach to governmental regulation in over ninety years. The Great Depression of the 1930s created a need for regulatory reform and resulted in the advent of such new regulatory frameworks as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). It has been the purpose of the SEC to create and nurture efficient securities markets enabling vibrant capital formation while preventing fraud upon the investing public. At issue is the contrast between the regulatory regime in place since 1933-34 and the Trump Administration’s desire to …
Hardwood Regeneration In Kalmia Latifolia Thickets, Maria Isabel Schutte
Hardwood Regeneration In Kalmia Latifolia Thickets, Maria Isabel Schutte
Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations
Regeneration of many hardwood species, especially ectomycorrhizal-associated species like oaks, is inhibited under ericaceous thickets, but not much is known about how Kalmia latifolia inhibits seedlings. I explored this phenomenon using spatial analysis of a stem-mapped forested stand and two greenhouse experiments designed to detect plant-soil feedbacks, whether they are biotic, and light dependence. Spatial analyses confirmed that seedling abundance for most species is strongly, negatively correlated with K. latifolia basal area. Oaks that successfully recruit to the sapling stage are found in areas with less K. latifolia than those occupied by arbuscular (AM) or ericoid (ERM) associated saplings. In …

In a randomized, dose-response trial, we used molecular and phenomic profiling to compare responses with traditional moder ate-intensity endurance and resistance training (TRAD) versus high-intensity tactical training (HITT) that encompassed explosive whole-body interval training and high-intensity resistance training. Ninety-four participants (18–27 yr) completed 12 wk of TRAD or HITT followed by 4 wk of detraining. Although similar performance and body composition improvements were observed in response to HITT and TRAD, some dose-dependent differences were observed for: 1) ex vivo muscle tissue changes in myofiber size, capillarization, satellite cell frequency, and mitochondrial function and 2) differential gene expression (DGE) of muscle …
The Role Of Implicit Bias In Police Citizen Interactions - A Historical Review And Policy Recommendations, Catherine Anne Liedman, Ziwei Qi
The Role Of Implicit Bias In Police Citizen Interactions - A Historical Review And Policy Recommendations, Catherine Anne Liedman, Ziwei Qi
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Abstract
This paper examines the impact of implicit bias on police-citizen interactions, contributing to racial disparities in stops, arrests, and the use of force. While explicit racism has declined since the Civil Rights Era, unconscious stereotypes continue to influence law enforcement decisions. Research highlights that Black individuals experience higher rates of police encounters and fatal force compared to White individuals, a pattern not fully explained by crime rates but rather by systemic and historical biases within policing institutions. Efforts to address implicit bias, such as diversity training, have shown limited long-term effectiveness. Instead, meaningful reform requires structural changes, including improved …

Between 2023 and 2025, the U.S. labor market entered a period of accelerated restructuring driven by generative artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. Routine, entry-level cognitive roles—particularly in clerical, customer service, and junior technical positions—contracted sharply as intelligent systems assumed high-volume, rules-based tasks. While these displacements echo past automation cycles, the present transformation is distinct in its scope, affecting both knowledge work and creative functions, and in its speed, amplified by enterprise-scale adoption. Simultaneously, demand has surged for specialized AI-related positions, interdisciplinary roles blending domain expertise with AI fluency, and ―durable skills‖ that remain resistant to automation. Drawing on labor market …

Bridging Borders: Navigating The Tapestry Of Multiculturalism And Migration, Saba Safdar
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
This paper is based on a keynote delivered at the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP) conference in Bali, Indonesia, in August 2024. It explores key themes related to social cohesion and inclusive intergroup relations in an era of rising global migration, exclusionary political rhetoric, and the surge of right-wing populism. First, the Multidimensional Individual Difference Acculturation (MIDA) model is reviewed. This framework examines how psychological resilience, social support, identity, cultural competence, and acculturation strategies influence adaptation outcomes across diverse migration contexts. Second, the interaction between individual and societal factors in shaping immigrant adaptation is analysed through empirical studies testing …

The New Framework For Directors’ Duty To Creditors And The Challenges Ahead – Foo Kian Beng V Op3 International Pte Ltd (In Liquidation) [2024] 1 Slr 361, Jonathan Ren Hao Cheong
Singapore Law Journal (Lexicon)
In Foo Kian Beng v OP3 International Pte Ltd (in liquidation) [2024] 1 SLR 361, the Singapore Court of Appeal introduced a two-step, three-category framework for evaluating whether a director has breached his fiduciary duty to consider the interests of creditors. This decision not only affirms the traditional understanding of the duty in other common law jurisdictions but also provides directors with clearer guidance on managing the affairs of the company in times of financial distress. This article builds upon the discussion in Foo Kian Beng by evaluating the new framework established by the SGCA. It also identifies potential challenges …

The administrative state is again at a cross roads. The Supreme Court seems poised to continue its march toward trying to fit all of government neatly into one of the three constitutionally enumerated branches. An important front of this shift has been a flattening of the mechanisms through which officers of the United States may be held appropriately accountable for their actions. Waning are the days when Congress had the flexibility to create the institutions it believed were “necessary and proper” for carrying into execution important policy aims and to determine the appropriate mechanisms for accountability in conjunction with considering …

Ibi-Dt: A Novel Approach Combining Individualized Bayesian Inference And Decision Tree For Identifying Cancer Drivers And Their Interactions, Md Asad Rahman, Gregory F. Cooper, Jinying Zhao, Xinghua Lu, Jinling Liu
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Cancer is mainly caused by a relatively small portion of somatic genome alterations (SGAs), called cancer drivers. Despite success in identifying a good number of cancer drivers, many more remain to be discovered to explain various cancers. Moreover, limited tools are available to identify potential interactions among cancer drivers for a better understanding of oncogenesis. To tackle these challenges, we have developed a novel approach called individualized Bayesian inference using a decision tree (IBI-DT). IBI-DT recognizes the genetic heterogeneity among cancer patients, where different individuals or patient subgroups of distinct genomic makeup may have different drivers. IBI-DT works by constructing …

During 1950-2011, the number of fatalities caused by tornadoes in the U.S. significantly exceeded the fatalities caused by both hurricanes and earthquakes. To reduce tornado induced fatalities, it is essential to understand how structures/building failures correlate with fatalities and who are more vulnerable to tornadoes. Insights from this study are intended to help provide information to decision-makers on where to allocate limited resources for enhancing tornado resilience. By examining both the fatality data and structural damage data in the 2021 Midwest Tornado Outbreak, the objective of this study is to examine the occurrence of fatalities during tornadoes across various types …
Evaluating Unoccupied Aerial Systems (Uass) For The Monitoring Of Unmarked Moose In New Hampshire, Usa, Lily Hall
Master's Theses and Capstones
Accurate estimates of wildlife densities are important for understanding population dynamics and informing management decisions. Recent technological developments such as improvements of unoccupied aerial systems (UASs) and sensors provide novel pathways to estimate wildlife densities. However, these methods require critical evaluation of efficacy. In this research, we evaluated the capability of UASs to predict moose (Alces alces) density across a large landscape (~12,000 km2) in northern New Hampshire, USA using longwave infrared imagery via UAS sampling. In Chapter 1, our objective was to account for imperfect detection by creating a sightability model for unmarked moose that includes covariates expected to …
