The Malditas, The Filipinas, And The Azkals: A Socio-Onomastic Examination Of Nicknames Used For The Philippine Women’S And Men’S National Football Teams, Satwinder Rehal, Inez Z. Ponce De Leon

Department of Communication Faculty Publications

Nicknames in sports can serve a wide range of social and semantic functions. Assigning nicknames to athletes and teams can allow fans to identify with them. Such names can also become symbolic resources that fans and teams turn to when asserting their identity. Nicknames in sports come to convey varied meanings and interpretations understood within a set of contextual properties. This paper fills an empirical gap and investigates nicknames of national sports teams used in Southeast Asia. The investigative focus is on the nicknames of the Philippines men’s and women’s national football teams. Employing Leslie and Skipper’s socio-onomastic framework, this …

The Dubious Role Of Institutional Investors In Driving The Green Transition: Legal And Economic Constraints, Giovanni Strampelli Sep 2025

The Dubious Role Of Institutional Investors In Driving The Green Transition: Legal And Economic Constraints, Giovanni Strampelli

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

There is a well-established trend that the process of transition to a sustainable economic growth model marked by the pursuit of environmental, social and governance (“ESG”) objectives has large companies at its center, which are considered an essential hub for this purpose given their weight in the global economy. In this context, the role of shareholders, especially institutional investors, plays an important role. Indeed, it is widely recognized that they, having an increasing prominence in the shareholder base of large, listed companies, can push these public companies to adopt more virtuous conduct in the areas of, among others, environmental protection …

Transcutaneous Spinal Stimulation Paired With Visual Feedback Facilitates Retention Of Improved Weight Transfer Toward The Affected Side In People Post-Stroke, Hyunje Park, Beom-Chan Lee, Dimitry Sayenko, Sheng Li, Seoung Hoon Park

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

Background: Many individuals with hemiparesis after stroke are reluctant to transfer their body weight toward the affected side and rely more heavily on the unaffected leg while walking. Although visual feedback (VF) has been utilized to improve their weight transfer during walking, the effects of transcutaneous spinal stimulation (TSS) paired with VF during locomotor training in people post-stroke remain largely unexplored. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to determine whether phasic TSS paired with VF regarding weight shifting to the affected leg during treadmill walking would enhance weight transfer toward the affected side.

Methods: Eleven individuals post-stroke participated in …

University Of Plymouth, Plymouth, UKPeople living with obesity have a greater chance of developingcomplications during pregnancy and are over-represented inmaternal mortality data relating to both direct and indirect causesduring pregnancy and up to a year after the birth of their child. Inaddition, epigenetic influences result in metabolic changes inoffspring of people living with obesity leading to a greater chanceof them experiencing long-term health consequences. In view ofthese health concerns, people living with obesity are advised to loseweight in the preconception period, before becoming pregnant.Sustained weight loss, however, can be difficult to achieve, andpeople do not always seek preconception advice. A Search For Subdwarf B Binaries Using Pulsation Timing From Tess, Tomomi Otani, Andrzej S. Baran, Lindsay C. Spence, Ted A. Von Hippel, Ellesse A. Lynum-Lozano, Julia M. Clark

Publications

Hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars are post-main-sequence stars of high temperature and gravity. Approximately 30% of sdBs exhibit stable pressure and/or gravity-mode pulsations, which can be used via the timing method to test for companion stars and determine their orbital solutions. We used short cadence data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) to search for previously undiscovered companions to sdBs. In this paper, we focus on searching for companions with orbital periods shorter than 13.5 days which are detectable within one sector of TESS data (about 27 days). The timing method requires that we derive pulsation frequencies in subsets …

Effect Of Ipomoeassin F On The Synthesis Of Membrane And Secretory Proteins In Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Cells, Brihget Sicairos, Jianhong Zhou, Zhijian Hu, Qingyang Zhang, Wei Q. Shi, Yuchun Du

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ipomoeassin F (Ipom-F) is a natural compound that exhibits a potent cytotoxic effect on triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells. The mechanism underlying this selective potency remains unclear. To elucidate this mechanism, we analyzed the proteome profiles of the TNBC MDA-MB-231 cells after exposure to Ipom-F at different time points and increasing doses using a quantitative proteomic method. Our proteomic data demonstrate that the major effect of Ipom-F on MDA-MB-231 cells is the inhibition of membrane and secreted protein expression. These findings align with the recently uncovered molecular mechanism of action of Ipom-F, which binds to Sec61-alpha and inhibits the cotranslational …

An Integrated Photovoltaic Thermal Smart Energy Station, Temitope Johnson, Tamer Kamel, David Jenkins, Gary Millar

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Since their invention, photovoltaic (PV) cells haveundergone significant technological advancements, emerging asone of the most accessible sources of clean energy with aneffectively infinite fuel supply. However, PV technologycontinues to face a critical challenge; a decline in efficiency asoperating temperatures rise above 25 °C. This research aims tomitigate the impact of elevated temperatures on PV panels byinvestigating the phase change materials (PCMs) fortemperature control of the PV panels and release theirgenerated heat to PCMs as heat collection and temporarystorage units. Consequently, the heat can be then transferredfrom the temporary storage point to a long-term heat storage inZeolite materials through supply-air duct …

What Is Worthy Of Inclusion? An Assessment Of The Utility Of Content Selection Strategies At Institutions Of Higher Learning In Zimbabwe, Darlington Mutanda Sep 2025

What Is Worthy Of Inclusion? An Assessment Of The Utility Of Content Selection Strategies At Institutions Of Higher Learning In Zimbabwe, Darlington Mutanda

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

The selection of content for university curricula is of the utmost importance, especially at universities where lecturers have choice in content selection. By contrast, in many jurisdictions, state school systems for primary and secondary schools have syllabi that must be followed to the letter. University teachers/lecturers can choose what to teach, and the selection of content can be based on several factors such as convenience (choosing to teach what one is comfortable with), expertise, research interests, ideology, by accident, or even what one was taught previously despite the dynamic change of knowledge. This means that the student can be impacted …

The MAPK pathway can drive resistance in highly aggressive breast cancers. Our previous work showed that the MEK inhibitor (MEKi) AZD6244 (selumetinib) prevented lung metastasis in a breast cancer xenograft model. In clinical studies, MEKis as single agents have had only modest activity against solid tumors due to the onset of resistance. Using synthetic lethality siRNA screening, we identified myeloid cell leukemia-1 (MCL-1) as a potential contributor to AZD6244 resistance. We hypothesized that MCL-1 promotes MEKi resistance in highly aggressive breast cancers and that MCL-1 inhibition overcomes AZD6244 resistance. We established two AZD6244-resistant cell lines: MDA-MB-231-R (triple-negative breast cancer) and …

Introduction To The Special Section On Earthquakes In Slowly Deforming Mountain Belts And The High Atlas Earthquake Of 8 September 2023, Fida Medina, Youssef Timoulali, Mustapha Meghraoui, Sarah Boulton, Eric Fielding

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Earthquakes in slowly deforming mountain belts result from low‐tectonic loading and occur on individual fault segments. Although most of the significant seismic strain rate concentrates along the plate boundaries, large earthquakes with may still be generated along faults in regions at a distance (≫100 km) from plate boundaries. Intraplate regions, or continental interiors, exhibit active deformation characterized by relatively low tectonic and seismic strain rates (<5 mm/yr; Johnston, 1996), consistent with geodetic strain rates and models of plate motions that predict comparable velocities (Kreemer et al., 2014). Active faults in continental interiors...
