Capillary Pressures Of Hydrogen-Brine In Carbonate And Dolomite Rocks Under Stress And With Pore Pressure, Nilesh Kumar Jha, Faisal Awan, Mathieu Roger, Alireza Keshavarz, Stefan Iglauer
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The recent discovery of high purity natural hydrogen in South Australia prompts the need for hydrogen-brine capillary pressure data to understand the behavior of fluid movement in the rock matrix. Furthermore, this investigation provides deeper insights into the suitability of carbonate reservoirs for potential large scale hydrogen storage and its deliverability. We measured core-scale drainage and imbibition capillary pressures for hydrogen-brine systems in limestone and dolomite under stress and hydrogen pore pressure, using advanced centrifuge techniques. Drainage capillary pressures range from 0.23 MPa (33.2 psi) to 0.02 MPa (3.2 psi) at 57.3-80.2% brine saturation in limestone and 72.7-99.8% in dolomite …

A New Reptile Search Algorithm For An Intelligent Video Retrieval System, Ansam Nazar Younis, Fawziya Mahmood Ramo
Baghdad Science Journal
The increasing volume of videos produced and shared via smart devices has made indexing and retrieving them a clear challenge. Current retrieval systems, such as specialized video retrieval systems, rely on text-based searches, which often misrepresent and frequently result in erroneous descriptions of the requested video, particularly when it comes to videos about certain specialities like security or medical procedures that are hard to describe. As a result, we developed a model that handles information-rich video queries, making it easier to find related videos that are specifically relevant to the user's needs. This paper proposes a new method for indexing …
Representations Of Cartel Leaders In Narcocorridos: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis, Gael Gamboa
Representations Of Cartel Leaders In Narcocorridos: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis, Gael Gamboa
Theses and Dissertations
Narcocorridos have become one of the most recognized expressions of narcoculture in Mexico. Despite growing scholarly interest in narcoculture, relatively few studies have examined how cartel leaders are represented across narcocorridos. This study addresses this gap by examining the symbolic representations of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, and Amado Carrillo Fuentes in narcocorrido lyrics. The study is guided by cultural criminology and subculture theory; this study employed a qualitative research design using reflexive thematic analysis. A purposive sample of 25 narcocorridos was analyzed to identify recurring patterns in the representation of cartel leadership. As a result, six …

Personal Authenticity For Engagement And Transfer In Introductory Cybersecurity Education, Daniel T. Hickey, Ronald J. Kantor
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Abstract—This conceptual/theoretical paper explores how personal authenticity might promote generative learning in introductory cybersecurity courses. Generative learning transfers confidently to future educational, professional, personal, and testing situations. This cycle of design-based research addresses the concern that more typical professionally authentic contexts (e.g., hospitals, banks, etc.) may be alien and overwhelming to many students, particularly those in introductory courses and/or from non-professional families and communities. If so, this leads to “inert” knowledge that does not transfer. Personal authenticity is rooted in expansive framing, a modern theory of learning transfer. We reframe expansive framing as personal authenticity to make it …

The Varieties Of Precaution: Which Risks, Whose Attitudes?, Tomasz Żuradzki
Animal Sentience
The Edge of Sentience offers an ambitious and timely institutional framework for proportionate precaution under uncertainty about sentience. Its systematic treatment of empirical and theoretical uncertainty across diverse cases is a major contribution. Focusing on the problem of identifying and weighing different risks when designing proportionate precautions, this commentary suggests three areas in which Birch’s framework could be developed further: a more domain-sensitive justification of the priority given to avoiding under-attribution; a clearer distinction among competing forms of risk aversion and their divergent policy implications; and a fuller explanation of how the framework generates different recommendations across cases.

Engaging in critical rhetorical theory and methodology, we interrogate the contemporary landscape of anti-trans backlash in women’s sport. Specifically, we read the ‘TERF wars’ (Pearce et al.) across critiques of biofeminism (Pape) and whiteness (Fischer) while drawing upon critical social science research into trauma-bonding, bullying, and the structural impacts of gender verification policies. Our analysis focuses on the Women’s Sports Policy Working Group (WSPWG), offering a trauma-informed reading of the WSPWG’s ‘Position’ statement to illuminate how lesbian female athletes who were previously slandered for failing to meet femininity norms in sport are unable to overcome that trauma to recognize and …

Deep Learning-Based Burned Area Mapping Of California Wildfires Using Sentinel-2 And Landsat-8 Imagery Enhanced With Super-Resolution Techniques, Youngmin Seo, Seung Hee Kim, Menas Kafatos, Jinsoo Kim, Yangwon Lee
Institute for ECHO Articles and Research
The increasing frequency of wildfires under a changing climate has led to extensive ecosystem destruction, highlighting the need for reliable burned area assessment using satellite imagery. Single-satellite data are constrained by observation gaps and interference from smoke and clouds, whereas multi-satellite data fusion can mitigate these limitations. Nonetheless, the fusion techniques still encounter challenges such as spatial information loss from resolution differences and cross-satellite domain mismatch. This study presents a burned area mapping framework that integrates super-resolution (SR) with transfer learning to address spatial and domain gaps in multi-satellite data. Specifically, Landsat-8 imagery is super-resolved to 7.5 m resolution, and …

In traditional CubeSat configurations, the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) circuit acts as a critical single point of failure because all harvested solar energy is funneled through a single, non-redundant conversion stage. Consequently, the failure of this individual component completely blocks power delivery to the system, permanently stranding otherwise healthy solar arrays and batteries and causing catastrophic mission termination.
This work introduces a modular, stackable solar energy architecture that distributes power conditioning across multiple identical, autonomous modules connected to shared PV and battery buses. By relying purely on analog input-voltage regulation at a common operating point, it eliminates radiation-vulnerable digital …

1 — Background
- Growing dependence on space-based assets (telecom, transport, grid, GPS) = growing space-weather exposure
- A Carrington-class storm today would mean cascading failures and losses in the trillions
- Current assets (e.g. GOES, ACE, DSCOVR) are excellent but large, costly, and with minutes to hours of alert latency from ground processing; weak coverage off the Earth–Sun line, where multi-point views could untangle the solar flare/SEP/ CME chain
- The Space Weather Alerting Platform (SWAP) concept mission (right) is a low-cost, 3U cubesat solution for proliferated solar monitoring with low-latency onboard AI alerting
Environmental Durability Of Silver Teflon Fep Thermal Control Tape Protected By A Sio2/Nicr Backcoat, Warren Su, Brian Phan
Environmental Durability Of Silver Teflon Fep Thermal Control Tape Protected By A Sio2/Nicr Backcoat, Warren Su, Brian Phan
Small Satellite Conference
Silver Teflon® FEP thermal control tapes are widely used on small satellites due to their low solar absorptance and high infrared emittance. However, long-term operation in low Earth orbit (LEO) is often limited by degradation mechanisms associated with atomic oxygen (AO), ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and thermal cycling. In particular, silver–adhesive interactions and defect-mediated undercutting have been identified, based on results from NASA’s Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) mission (5.7 years in LEO), as primary contributors to the increase in solar absorptance over mission life. This work investigates a SiO2/NiCr protective backcoat film stack sputtered on top of the …

Hospital Charity Care And Medical Debt Among Low-Wage Workers In The United States, Mathieu Despard, Stephen Roll, Eva Stahl, Camila Salvagno, Ruth Lande
Center for Social Development Research
With one in five low-wage workers reporting medical or dental debt they cannot afford to pay, financial assistance programs (also known as charity care) are an important resource. Federal law requires nonprofit hospitals to offer such programs, but evidence suggests that workers experience administrative burdens in learning about and applying for the assistance. Drawing upon data from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility (WEIM) survey, this brief presents findings on associations between the characteristics of low-wage workers and their experiences with financial assistance programs. The brief also shares examples of how hospital policies and patients’ needs may not align, presenting …

Promoting resilience and mental health among autistic children remains a global health priority, consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 and the World Health Organisation’s vision for inclusive, community based care. While existing interventions focus on functional outcomes, resilience among autistic children remains understudied. To address this gap, a nurse led community based sailing program was developed and implemented in partnership with Sailability Hong Kong.
A pilot assessor blinded, parallel group randomised controlled trial evaluated the program’s feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects. Children aged 7–12 years with autism diagnosis were recruited, then randomised to either: (1) an intervention …

On January 31, 2020, Santa Clara County reported California’s (CA) first COVID-19 case. As the pandemic unfolded, health systems were severely strained, and health care workers faced dual exposure risks from their communities and households alongside heightened occupational risk from direct patient care.1,2 For Black and Latinx nurses, COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on their communities intensified stress, fear, and uncertainty, and when combined with the demands of frontline work, greatly increased their risk of psychological distress and burnout. We examined COVID-19’s impact on the mental health and well-being of Black and Latinx nurses in CA.
Method: We conducted an explanatory sequential …

Nurses encounter ethical dilemmas daily in clinical, community, and cross-cultural care settings. Relational ethics provides a guiding foundation for ethical nursing practice by emphasizing human connection, mutual respect, and shared meaning rather than rules, duties, or procedural norms alone. This workshop examines how relational ethics operates across borders, highlighting how nurses adapt their communication strategies, clinical judgment, and ethical reasoning to support individuals whose cultural values, histories, and expectations of care differ from their own. By framing ethics as relational rather than universal, the session positions relational safety as an essential precursor to ethical decision-making and professional accountability.
The workshop …

Lightweight Open Source On-Spacecraft Machine Learning With Mlpack And F Prime, Ryan R. Curtin, Scott M. Gilliland, Sterling L. Peet
Small Satellite Conference
Onboard machine learning is an increasingly important topic in spaceflight systems, as machine learning and AI models are increasingly used for data processing, anomaly detection, attitude control systems, and other predictive applications. However, successfully deploying a machine learning model in a spaceflight computing environment is fraught with difficulty, as spaceflight computing environments are low-resource, but typical machine learning software solutions are implemented in languages like Python, which require an interpreter and other heavyweight dependencies. It is therefore virtually mandatory for any on-spacecraft machine learning to be written with lightweight toolkits that minimize dependencies and resource usage.
We demonstrate a solution …

Optimization Of Orbit-Maintenance Strategies For Small Satellites In Cislunar Space, Timothy Lauinger, Bradley Cotten, Robert E. Zee
Small Satellite Conference
Renewed interest in lunar exploration and the development of a sustained cislunar economy has driven demand for low-cost missions supporting mapping, communications networks, navigation services, and scientific studies. Recent growth in rideshare opportunities to the Moon has made small-satellite architectures a viable and cost-effective approach for these missions. Successful execution of these missions, however, depends critically on fuel-efficient and reliable orbital insertion and maintenance strategies, as cislunar missions impose substantially higher delta V requirements than low-Earth orbit missions due to the inherent instability of low lunar orbits. Perturbations arising primarily from lunar mass concentrations drive secular growth in orbital eccentricity …

The Starling Extended Mission has demonstrated the transformative potential of software-defined architectures in multi-spacecraft swarms. Building on the original Starling mission, which validated autonomous coordination and networking among small satellites, the extended phase focused on adaptability—updating onboard payload software and software-defined radios (SDRs) to enable entirely new experiments without hardware modifications. This capability signals a new approach: spacecraft swarms can evolve post-launch to meet emerging scientific and operational objectives.
Central to this extension was the deployment of new software enabling two-way ranging and “reverse GPS” source identification using raw radio frequency (RF) signals. Traditionally, ranging and navigation rely on pre-integrated …

Small Satellite Conference
We proposed a novel concept of quasi-two-dimensional SAR (synthetic aperture radar) satellites, SAR DiskSats, in 2023 at this conference. This year, in 2026, the demonstration missions of SAR DiskSats are authorized by the Japanese government as a Space Strategy Fund’s Mission. This paper describes the concept and the mission scenario of the demonstration mission in 2028 and 2030. The SAR DiskSat features a deployable passive slot array antenna that can be compactly folded within the quasi-two-dimensional satellite body. This configuration allows for flexible solar cell sheets to be installed on the backside of the antenna, as the antennas do not …

The paper first reports the recent operational results of the HOKUSHIN satellite. It explains how our extended code correlation method has performed and provides link threshold information, specifically the demonstrated C/N0 figures. The paper next focuses on cis-lunar space applications, beginning with direct AOWR-alone positioning directly from Earth using three or more small-aperture ground stations. The application employs a ‘Self-Positioning’ strategy. This system operates in cis-lunar space with 3-meter-class ground stations and CubeSats larger than 6U in size equipped with 200x300 mm patch-array antennas on. It enables universities and startups to conduct genuine lunar exploration. The team won the Strategic …
