How Does User Control Reduce Irritation Of Mid-Roll Ads, Elijah Villanueva Oct 2025

How Does User Control Reduce Irritation Of Mid-Roll Ads, Elijah Villanueva

College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program

Large video platforms like YouTube and Twitch rely extensively on advertising for revenue. Often, they deploy mid-roll advertising: ads that play in the middle of video content, interrupting it. Such interruptions can irritate consumers significantly. This project primarily involves conducting user testing of an already-developed YouTube browser extension that that gives users some control over when mid-roll ads play. We hope to ascertain how effectively the design mitigates user irritation from mid-roll ads. Tasks will involve recruiting people into a laboratory setting where they will use the browser extension, interviewing them about their experience, and manually extracting themes from the …

Analyzing Wearable Sensor Data From Individuals Undergoing Motor And Neurological Rehabilitation, Carly Smith

College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program

An ongoing study funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) is focused on developing computational models of rehabilitation for people post-stroke. Stroke affects around 800,000 people per year in the US, and often leaves people with limited motor (movement) and neurological (brain-based) capability. Wearable sensors may allow clinicians to better understand how these individuals recover, and to better design therapies and interventions. We are seeking students who can use existing software, and perhaps adapt the software to extract, analyze, and visualize detail from study participants. This project will involve with the Cal Poly PI, and collaborators from physical therapy. This …

Supporting Migrant Education Program Students, Yaneli Cruz

College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program

This project explored the impact of the EPIC engineering camp on Migrant Education Program (MEP) participants, a group often academically disadvantaged due to frequent moves, limited resources, and lack of encouragement to pursue higher education. Because no new IRB-approved data could be collected during camp, pre- and post-camp surveys that students had already completed were analyzed. I converted the data into CSV files, built SQL tables, and wrote a Python script to automate the process of filtering and comparing MEP students, Session 1, with non-MEP peers. Results showed that 28% of MEP students started camp unsure about engineering, but 11% …

It Just Means More: The Cultural Bond Between The South And Sec Football, Ryan Stinson

Senior Theses

With the success of programs like Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech in the early 1900s, college football quickly became means of establishing Southern superiority over the northern U.S. Their success continued into the 20th and 21st centuries with the creation and rise of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). During and prior to the existence of the SEC, rivalries, traditions, and pageantry developed and thrived in communities across the southeast. These aspects created a unique environment that drew in fans of college football across the region. This resulted in a unique bond between fan, university, team, and community that has thrived within all …

Survey results from 25 vendors reveal a diverse and culturally representative business community in which Soda City serves as both an incubator …

The Misconceived Personal-Benefit Requirement Of Insider Trading Law: About The Insecurities Markets, Kenneth R. Davis Oct 2025

The Misconceived Personal-Benefit Requirement Of Insider Trading Law: About The Insecurities Markets, Kenneth R. Davis

Denver Law Review

In Dirks v. SEC and Salman v. United States, the Supreme Court held that, under Section 10(b) of the Securities Exchange Act, tipper/tippee liability arises only if the tippee confers a benefit on the tipper. The ostensible justification for this rule arises from a mistaken premise. The error is rooted in the so-called classical theory of insider trading. When a corporate insider trades on material, nonpublic corporate information, the Supreme Court has held that the insider faces liability because that person profited from the trade. Building on this mistaken premise, the Court has held that when a tipper receives a …

Nebraska's Hidden Goldmine: Wind Power On Farms, Adelaide Witte

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

Nebraska’s been hesitant to go all in on wind energy. People often worry about things like noise, how turbines look, or even potential impacts on human health. Community concerns are valid and should always be acknowledged. However, addressing them doesn’t require putting all development on hold.

The Myth Of Clean Manufacturing, Andrea Phan Oct 2025

The Myth Of Clean Manufacturing, Andrea Phan

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

We must act now and reform renewable energy credits to reflect real progress. This means tightening Scope 2 rules so that renewable claims are tied to additional, time and location matched, clean power. It means rewarding measurable integration, so that real emissions are avoided, not waived by retroactive certificates. RECs can still play a role, but only in a system that demands we use the tools we already have.

Covid-19 Asian American Oral History Project: Reflecting On Identity And Oral History At A Community College, Thomas Cleary

Publications and Research

In this article, I share narrators’ stories from the Covid-19 Asian American Oral History Project based at LaGuardia Community College, CUNY, to illustrate how Covid-19 and increased anti-Asian hate during the pandemic shaped Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) identities in Queens, New York. Narrators’ stories shed light on how Black Lives Matter impacted their own understanding of race and racialization, particularly as AAPI identity and race relate to the Model Minority Myth. This project also laid the groundwork to develop a broader oral history culture at the college, developing faculty pedagogy to incorporate oral history interviews and interviewing into …

Many Stories, One Shape: Narrative Convergence In Ai-Generated Fiction, Marisol Hernandez Brito Oct 2025

Many Stories, One Shape: Narrative Convergence In Ai-Generated Fiction, Marisol Hernandez Brito

IPHS 484: Senior Seminar

Frontier large language models (LLMs) generate fluent outlines but often converge on repetitive structural templates. This exploratory study examined inter-model diversity in thriller novel outlines produced by five LLMs (ChatGPT-5(5.1), Grok-4, Gemini-2.5 Flash, DeepSeek-v3, Claude Sonnet-4.5) under baseline and enhanced prompting conditions (N=50 outlines). Blind AI evaluations revealed moderate inter-model diversity (baseline mean 64.45%; enhanced 58.89%), declining relative to intra-model baselines and between phases, particularly in Protagonist and Plot dimensions. Quantitative and qualitative analysis identified phase-specific convergence: a "forensic procedural" template (analytical female protagonists, corporate conspiracies, Quest/Monster arcs) under the baseline prompt, shifting to a "domestic psychological thriller" template (uniform …

As rising temperatures increase the rate of polar ice cap melt, the Arctic is rapidly becoming a region of significant geopolitical interest, creating the potential for a revived Great Powers struggle. A key consideration surrounding potential conflict for democracies is the role of official government secrecy in foreign policy decision-making. This particular study examines the intersection of the two topics, creating a model of understanding and predicting U.S. government deception in conflicts. Specifically, this research identifies the gap between internal U.S. government knowledge and publicly broadcasted messaging surrounding the justifications for military and covert action. By analyzing case studies of …

The Jurisprudence Of Constitutional Entitlement, David Schraub Oct 2025

The Jurisprudence Of Constitutional Entitlement, David Schraub

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Lawyers are accustomed to thinking of constitutional law as a familiar binary: Either a given governmental policy or practice is constitutional and therefore permitted, or unconstitutional and forbidden. But not all constitutional laws are created equal. A state practice which may be constitutional in concept (such as the death penalty) may, in some or many applications, violate specific constitutional rules and become impermissible. When a policy which has been affirmed to be constitutional in general repeatedly runs up against problems as-applied, a legal tension emerges: can the state implement the policy or not? This dilemma illuminates a third constitutional category: …

Ten Commandments In The Public Square And Public Schools, Mark David Hall, Andrea Picciotti-Bayer Oct 2025

Ten Commandments In The Public Square And Public Schools, Mark David Hall, Andrea Picciotti-Bayer

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The Ten Commandments are of paramount importance to the Jewish and Christian faiths, and they are viewed by many as a source of Western law. In America, they have been (and are) taught in churches and synagogues, and throughout much of this nation’s history they have been taught by parents, tutors, and teachers in private and public schools. They are regularly displayed in courthouses and statehouse grounds, and some states have desired to display them in public schools. Predictably, those who would scrub religion from the public square have argued that Ten Commandment displays on public property violate the First …

Regulating Deception To Protect Democracy: Global Election Misinformation Regulations Analyzed Under U.S. First Amendment Doctrine, Stephanie Hoke Oct 2025

Regulating Deception To Protect Democracy: Global Election Misinformation Regulations Analyzed Under U.S. First Amendment Doctrine, Stephanie Hoke

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

This Note argues that the marketplace of ideas may not always be a workable theory for the election misinformation that pervades social media platforms. Social media is a unique medium because it does not have the same safeguards as television, radio, and newspapers that are used to filter out false claims and information. Due to the lack of safeguards and the algorithms that promote misinformed posts, social media platforms provide a thriving environment for election misinformation. In addition, the presence of online “echo chambers” and the speed at which misinformation can spread calls for some form of government regulation. In …

Theoretical Investigation And Practical Validation Of Ai Based Fault Detection In Bjt Amplifier Circuits, Sameh O. Abdellatif, Kyrillos Selim, Ahmad Alaa, Ola Hassan Oct 2025

Theoretical Investigation And Practical Validation Of Ai Based Fault Detection In Bjt Amplifier Circuits, Sameh O. Abdellatif, Kyrillos Selim, Ahmad Alaa, Ola Hassan

Electrical Engineering

Analog circuits are essential to electronic systems due to their variety of critical functions. Catastrophic faults, such as short- and open-circuit faults, can stop the circuit from functioning. Meanwhile, parametric faults such as drift due to temperature fluctuations, noise in components, and power supply issues cause the circuit to operate beyond its range. Such faults can harm the circuit and its constituent parts. Therefore, it is crucial to identify and address the issues brought on by these faults. Common traditional fault diagnosis methods that rely on manual testing and visual assessment are lacking in complex electronic systems and faults. Such …

Woman, Motherhood, And Home: Grappling With Gendered Dwelling, Pamela Joy M. Capistrano Oct 2025

Woman, Motherhood, And Home: Grappling With Gendered Dwelling, Pamela Joy M. Capistrano

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

Though ostensibly gender neutral, the word “home” carries with it the baggage of gender, particularly womanhood and motherhood. In English, for instance, “homemaking” is synonymous with “housewifery;” in Filipino, the mother is described as ilaw ng tahanan (“light of the home”). Housing, as well, has a similar neutral connotation; yet, when we consider the impact of urban housing crises, women are disproportionately affected. In this paper, I want to grapple with the broader implications of the gendered baggage of the idea of “home,” its impact on individuals, on how we conceive of houses, homes, and dwellings, and ultimately its impact …
