The Simulation Of Hyperspectral Observations By The Upcoming Spacecraft "Arab Satellite 813", With The Radiative Transfer Model Sciatran, Sara Maher Alhasan

Theses

The Arab Satellite 813, which is scheduled to be launched in 2025/2026 by the UAE Space Agency, is set to increase earth observation and monitor the climate across the middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This study uses the SCIATRAN radiative transfer model which was originally developed for the Envisat mission to simulate the hyperspectral observation specifically tailored for the satellite's payload. Using calibrations that were used by the previous research in their SCIATRAN V4.6 study and adjusting parameters like the Leaf Area Index (LAI), a simulation which agreed robustly with the benchmarks set by the previous research was …

Microstrip Antenna Design Based On Ai And Machine Learning, Waleed Mohamed Sha Moulavi Nov 2025

Microstrip Antenna Design Based On Ai And Machine Learning, Waleed Mohamed Sha Moulavi

Theses

Microstrip patch antennas (MPAs) rely on precise impedance matching for efficient power transfer between the antenna and feed line. This is often achieved using a number of different techniques, one of which is the quarter-wavelength transformer (QWT). While commercial electromagnetic (EM) solvers offer robust optimization capabilities, they often operate as "black boxes" without providing physical insights into parameter interdependencies. Furthermore, this thesis focuses on the specific scenario where the antenna input impedance is purely real. To address the lack of explicit design relationships for these specific conditions, this thesis develops and comparatively evaluates artificial intelligence (AI) models for QWT width …

It’S A Balancing Act: Analyzing The First Fair Use Factor, Taylor Gluckman Nov 2025

It’S A Balancing Act: Analyzing The First Fair Use Factor, Taylor Gluckman

Fordham Law Review

Fair use has always been an important element of copyright law. The first fair use factor, “the purpose and character of the use,” has become especially important after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. v. Goldsmith. The “purpose and character” is typically analyzed by determining if a secondary work is “transformative,” but lower courts do not agree on what it means to be transformative. There is also disagreement on how to balance a secondary work’s transformative nature with its commercial nature when deciding whether the first factor favors fair use.

Aims Calcific aortic stenosis (CAS) is the most common heart valvulopathy in high-income countries. There is no known treatment for CAS other than replacement of the valve in severe, symptomatic disease. Observational studies and a small openlabel randomized trial have reported that vitamin K1 supplementation may reduce the progression rate of calcification and obstruction in CAS. Methods and results 3PASSPORT(ACTRN12622000447752) will be a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial investigating if nutritional supplementation with 10 mg of vitamin K1 can reduce the rate of valvular calcification and haemodynamic progression in CAS. Patients identified to have mild or moderate CAS based …

More Alike Than Not: The Open Access Preferences Of Humanities Scholars, Rachel E. Scott, Ana Dubnjakovic Nov 2025

More Alike Than Not: The Open Access Preferences Of Humanities Scholars, Rachel E. Scott, Ana Dubnjakovic

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Several studies have noted that humanists have not been as quick or enthusiastic in their adoption of Open Access (OA) as their colleagues in other disciplines. This article leverages the Ithaka S+R US 2021 Faculty Survey to provide contextualized analysis of the OA and Open Education Resources (OER) preferences of humanities scholars, as well as some practices related to OA and OER, relative to their colleagues in other disciplines. Findings suggest that although humanists do stand apart in many OA preferences, the small effect sizes render these differences less important than previously suspected. The implications of these findings are considered …

Research Review: "Structure In Transition: The Role Of Structure In Facilitating Workplace Efficacy And Belonging For Military Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

Employment transitions necessitate a degree of uncertainty and lack of control, which may present a challenge to succeeding and belonging at a new organization. The present research tests ideas derived from compensatory control theory which posits that people may seek external structure to help exert control over their lives when they experience a lack of control in an important life domain – and that this can aid in their goal pursuit. Across three studies, we explore whether the perception of a higher degree of organizational structure can help employees compensate for uncertainty and lack of control and facilitate transitioning employees’ …

Scaling Up Cooperative Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, Minghong Geng Nov 2025

Scaling Up Cooperative Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, Minghong Geng

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Multi-agent systems (MAS) involve multiple autonomous agents that coordinate their actions to achieve shared or competing objectives in dynamic environments. Over the past decade, multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) has emerged as a powerful paradigm for enabling collaborative behaviors among autonomous agents within MAS to solve complex tasks. This dissertation discusses a critical scalability gap that exists between current MARL capabilities and real-world deployment requirements. Most existing MARL research focuses on small-scale laboratory problems, often struggling to coordinate large agent populations and facing challenges with extended decision-making horizons. In contrast, many real-world applications demand coordination among hundreds or thousands of agents …

Inventory Assortment Model For Retailers With Multi-Level Substitution Of Products, Gian Paolo G. Guiao, Gabriel John L. De Leon, John Kenneth P. Punongbayan, Kathleen L. Baldoz, Ven-Rem Bill A. Pasion, Angelo C. Ani

Journal Article

Ensuring a sufficient inventory level at the retail stage of the supply chain is essential to meet customer demand. However, determining the ideal quantity of products to be ordered by a retailer is challenging when there is a substitution of products. This study addresses the occurrence of customers substituting products in the store in case of product unavailability by developing a two- phase stochastic optimization model. The first phase created a discretized demand profile, one of the novelties of this study, that allows customers to substitute up to two attempts. The second phase developed a mixed-integer program (MIP) model that …

Balancing Act: Addressing Child Quantity-Quality Trade-Off In The Philippine Households With Educational And Health Social Programs, John Andrew A. Alsol, Marie Carroline Magante Nov 2025

Balancing Act: Addressing Child Quantity-Quality Trade-Off In The Philippine Households With Educational And Health Social Programs, John Andrew A. Alsol, Marie Carroline Magante

Economics Department Faculty Publications

The child quantity-quality (CQQ) trade-off has been extensively studied in economic research since it was first introduced by Becker and Lewis in 1973. Studies have argued that the current economic circumstances and the presence of government aid in education and health determine the existence and extent of the CQQ trade-off. However, there is a dearth of empirically tested research on the possible decreasing effects of social programs on the CQQ trade-off. Using the 2019 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey, this paper seeks to determine the effect of education and health social programs on the CQQ trade-off in the Philippines. Probit models …

Harnessing Coherent-Wave Control For Sensing Applications, Pablo Jara, Arthur Goetschy, Hui Cao, Alexey Yamilov Nov 2025

Harnessing Coherent-Wave Control For Sensing Applications, Pablo Jara, Arthur Goetschy, Hui Cao, Alexey Yamilov

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Imaging techniques such as functional near-infrared spectroscopy and diffuse optical tomography (DOT) achieve deep, noninvasive sensing in turbid media; however, they are constrained by the photon budget, as most of the injected light is lost to scattering before reaching the detector. Wavefront shaping (WFS) can enhance signal strength via interference at specific locations within scattering media, enhancing light-matter interactions and potentially extending the penetration depth of these techniques. Interpretation of the resulting measurements relies on knowing the optical sensitivity - the relationship between changes in the detected signals and perturbations at a specific location inside the medium; however, conventional diffusion-based …
