Bridging The Expectations Gaap In Financial Reporting, Neal F. Newman Nov 2025

Bridging The Expectations Gaap In Financial Reporting, Neal F. Newman

Faculty Scholarship

The true nature of auditing publicly traded companies’ financial statements has been somewhat of an enigma to the general public. Due to this mystery, an “expectations gap” has formed between the public expectations of auditors’ roles and what the auditor actually does in their analysis of financial statements. Auditors are an extremely important piece of the financial reporting puzzle because they determine whether or not a company’s financial statements are a fair and accurate reflection of the company’s financial position, a determination that can be a major influence on how the financial strength of a company is perceived. Newman’s Article …

Use Of Prophylaxis For Deep Venous Thrombosis And Pulmonary Embolism In Isolated Foot And Ankle Trauma, Regina Hansen, Alexander P. Rader, Naohiro Shibuya, Daniel C. Jupiter

School of Podiatric Medicine Publications

Background: Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are relatively rare after foot and ankle surgery, especially after trauma. Diagnosing DVT is difficult, and even when it is discovered it does not necessarily clinically manifest on, for example, duplex ultrasound. Thus, it is often recommended that prophylaxis use be assessed on a case-by-case basis based on risk profile rather than being uniformly given or not prescribed.

Methods: We searched the National Trauma Data Bank Trauma Quality Programs Participant Use File for patients experiencing foot and ankle trauma from 2013 to 2017. Patients were identified using the International Classification of …

Ded Printing Process Modeling Using Metal Matrix Composites: In-Situ Feedstock Mixing With Variable Compositions And Empirical Validation, Muhammad Arif Mahmood, Sabin Mihai, Diana Chioibasu, Andrei C. Popescu, Frank Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Directed Energy Deposition (DED) is a promising technology for producing metal matrix composites (MMXCs), but precise control over deposited layer dimensions, particularly in multi-material systems, remains difficult to achieve due to the complex interdependence of operating parameters such as laser parameters, feedstock flow rate, and beam energy attenuation. To address these problems, this work proposes an analytical model that predicts the width, height, and depth of the deposited layers using mixed feedstock compositions in-situ, with a focus on Inconel-718 and TiC MMXCs. The model takes into account variables such as laser power, feedstock density, and mixing ratios to improve layer …

Bending Fatigue In Additively Manufactured Metals: A Review Of Current Research And Future Directions, Md Bahar Uddin, Sriram Praneeth Isanaka, Frank Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Metal additive manufacturing (MAM), also referred to as 3D printing, has proven remarkable in the fabrication of complex metal components in multiple sectors. However, the assessment of this revolutionary process through bending fatigue is frequently impeded due to concerns about mechanical and physical conditions of the printed components. The unique layer-by-layer production process results in varied microstructures, anisotropy, and intrinsic defects that considerably differ from traditionally manufactured wrought metals. This review article aims to integrate and evaluate historical and contemporary research on the bending fatigue of additively manufactured materials. More specifically, the impact of process parameters, build orientation, surface conditions, …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Metal powders with uniformly dispersed nanoparticles, suitable shape, and size for additive manufacturing (AM) processes are highly demanded. However, it is difficult to manufacture metal matrix nanocomposite powders (MMNCs) with uniform dispersion of nanoparticles, optimized shape, and size. This study used high-energy ball milling to disperse NbC nanoparticles with an average length of 400 nm (ex-situ reinforcement) in a Stainless Steel (SS) 304 L matrix. In detail, SS304L-5wt% NbC powders were ball-milled from 4 to 10 h. The results showed that the milled powder particles experienced significant cold-welding during the milling time of 4–6 h, with a wide size distribution. …

Childhood, Memory And Cinephilia In The Work Of Víctor Erice: The Case Of «Cerrar Los Ojos, Carlos Fernández-Rodríguez, Sofía López-Hernández

Artículos científicos

This exploratory and descriptive study analyses Víctor Erice’s film Cerrar los ojos with regard to three key concepts of the author’s work: childhood, memory and cinephilia. The method chosen is audiovisual text analysis framed within qualitative research, and interpretative content analysis. The results confirm Cerrar los ojos as an autofiction that creates a dialogue between the life and work of its author through lost identity, nostalgia for childhood and cinema as redemption.

Cop30: A Climate Overview, Padraig O'Malley

New England Journal of Public Policy

This overview situates the accelerating climate crisis at a pivotal historical moment, as global emissions and political inaction converge ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil. Increasing heat is driving planetary instability, with cascading impacts such as sea level rise, droughts, wildfires, disease emergence, and permafrost thaw.

Despite pledges under the Paris Agreement and subsequent Glasgow Pact, most nations are far off track: 2024 marked the hottest year in recorded history, CO₂ reached 429 ppm by mid-2025, and fossil fuel combustion continues to rise. Under the Trump administration, the United States withdrew again from the Paris Agreement, dismantled environmental agencies, and …

From Margins To Mandates: The Ocean’S Emerging Role In Climate Law And Policy, Kilaparti Ramakrishna

New England Journal of Public Policy

For much of modern history, the ocean was treated as a boundless resource rather than as a living system central to planetary climate stability. Scientific advances over the past two decades have revealed the ocean’s indispensable role in regulating climate by absorbing more than 90 percent of excess heat and nearly a third of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. Yet this buffering capacity is eroding as unchecked greenhouse gas emissions drive warming, acidification, and sea level rise. Protecting ocean health has therefore become inseparable from stabilizing the climate, making ocean stewardship and climate action an indivisible imperative.

This article traces the evolution …

Policy Aspects Of Mitigation And Adaptation To Glacier Melt, José Romero Nov 2025

Policy Aspects Of Mitigation And Adaptation To Glacier Melt, José Romero

New England Journal of Public Policy

Global warming is causing irreversible glacier retreat. This phenomenon will have major consequences for the environment and human systems, particularly in terms of water availability, increased natural hazards, slope and valley stability, hydroelectric power generation, tourism, culture, and local lifestyles. Only a drastic and rapid reduction in greenhouse gas emissions could slow this phenomenon, but this reduction is slow in coming. Countries are experimenting with different approaches to mitigate ice melt, including integrated management of glacial and periglacial ecosystems and the local application of technologies. These technologies raise scientific questions about their effectiveness in a warming climate, and policy questions, …

Farming The 2030s: A Policy Playbook For Climate‑Resilient, Tech‑Enabled Agriculture In Arid And Semi‑Arid Regions, David M. Kargbo, Rawya Mezaal Mhmood, Neam Nabeel Alqaseer

New England Journal of Public Policy

The 2030s will be decisive for adapting agriculture to hotter, drier, and more volatile climates, especially across arid and semi-arid regions from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to parts of the United States. We advance a pragmatic blueprint: pair water-smart infrastructure and nature-based systems with digital, genetic, and robotic innovations, and align them through policy that de-risks investment while protecting people and ecosystems. We position Australia as a global test bed, where enforceable basin rules, digital agronomy, targeted inputs/robotics, safe wastewater reuse, managed aquifer recharge (MAR), and emerging agrivoltaics (AV) have been validated as bundles rather than isolated …

Say Neigh To Handshake Deals: An Economic And Ethical Argument For Written Warranties In The Sales Of Thoroughbred Racehorses, Kate Coulter

William & Mary Business Law Review

Horse racing is one of the largest, most lucrative industries in the United States, but state laws regulating the exchange of billions of dollars through the sales of Thoroughbred racehorses remain inconsistent. Moreover, ethical issues such as poor breeding practices tarnish the reputation of the sport, detracting viewers and consequently endangering the future livelihood of the racing industry. Litigation over birth defects in Thoroughbreds is common, prone to appeal, and expensive. But, this litigation could be mitigated through the use of written warranties in the sale of these highly valuable horses, pursuant to and supplementing the statute of frauds and …

Neighborhood Impacts Of Gentrification On Urban Communities, J Coley Nov 2025

Neighborhood Impacts Of Gentrification On Urban Communities, J Coley

The Lender Center for Social Justice

In many mid-sized U.S. cities, university and hospital expansion has spurred new development while displacing long-established Black communities. This study examines how Black homeowners and tenants in Buffalo’s Fruit Belt neighborhood navigate institutional gentrification driven by the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Using interviews and story circles with 50 residents, the research reveals that most residents support neighborhood improvement but demand development without displacement. Participants report rising property taxes, rent hikes, and exclusion from planning processes that threaten community stability and wealth. Despite these challenges, residents organize through efforts like the Fruit Belt Community Land Trust to resist displacement and promote …

Brenda Mpashi V Attorney General And Anor (2024/Ccz/005) [2025] Zmcc 4 (20 February 2025): The Constitutionality Of Ouster Clauses In A Democratic And Constitutional Dispensation, Mwami Kabwabwa, Madrine Mukabili

SAIPAR Case Review

Transformative constitutionalism requires Courts to adjudicate in a manner that advances substantive justice, protects rights, and ensures that all exercises of public power are justified in constitutional terms. In Brenda Mpashi, the Constitutional Court adopted a formalistic interpretive approach that prioritised administrative finality over constitutional accountability. By accepting Regulation 10A as an effective ouster clause, the Court insulated presidential action from judicial scrutiny and weakened the culture of justification, which is a fundamental principle in a constitutional democracy.

A more transformative approach would have scrutinised the constitutionality of the ouster clause, assessed its compatibility with Article 18(9) and the principle …

Is There Any Interactive Effect Between Competition And Risk Networks? Evidence From The Indian Banking System, Abhishek Poddar, Arun Misra

American Business Review

The study investigates the dynamics of interaction between bank competition and risk networks of the Indian banking system between 2010 to 2020. It has estimated bank competition using the Lerner Index through the translog cost function and bank risk using Z-Score. The study found that bank competition and risk networks are concentrated during the economic upcycle and dispersed during the downcycle. The article also found that big and profitable banks are the least competitive but riskier. The concentrated risk network structures reveal that systemic risk spillover is quite eminent in the Indian banking system. The distance-to-default model, panel vector autoregression …

In Companies We Trust: Cheap Talk Or Genuine Virtue?, Bishal Bc, Thuy Simpson

American Business Review

This paper examines how corporate narratives support either the impression management hypothesis or the incremental information hypothesis by analyzing the frequency of trust words used in the Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) section of 10-K filings. By directly linking trust language to actual fines and violations enforced by more than 400 federal, state, and local regulatory agencies in the U.S. from 2010 through 2023, we find that firms using more trust words in their MD&A tend to incur higher monetary penalties. We also document a significant link between increased use of trust words and poorer firm performance. Additional analyses reveal …

Does Higher Minimum Wage Discourage College Enrollment? A Cross-State Empirical Study Of The United States, Arindam Mandal, Sumant Rai, Elias K. Shukralla

American Business Review

The paper investigates the impact of minimum wage increase on college enrollment in the U.S. using a panel of 50 U.S. states during the period 2009-2018. By examining the impact of minimum wage on college enrollment, particularly within different types of post-secondary institutions, our study adds to the existing literature. This is a departure from previous research, which predominantly concentrated on two-year college enrollment. We find evidence that raising minimum wages adversely affects overall college enrollment. However, the results vary depending on the type of colleges. The increase in minimum wage has a negative impact on the enrollment of two-year …
