Influence Of Build Plate Location On Tensile Properties And Residual Stresses In Lpbf-Fabricated Stainless Steel 316 Components, Yareli Zelaya Pavón
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Additive manufacturing (AM), particularly Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), enables rapid production of complex metal components with minimal waste. Stainless Steel 316 (SS316) is widely used in engineering applications due to its corrosion resistance and mechanical reliability. This study investigates the influence of build plate location on tensile properties and residual stresses in LPBF-fabricated SS316. Twelve tensile specimens and nine unsupported bridge structures were fabricated at different build plate positions using a “machine model.” Tensile testing provided stress-strain data to evaluate peak stress, elastic modulus, and strain at break, while bridge curvature measurements quantified residual stress through warping. Results indicate …
Tonight’S Top Story: Analyzing English And Spanish-Language National And Local Newscasts For Content Differences, Esteban N. Serrano
Tonight’S Top Story: Analyzing English And Spanish-Language National And Local Newscasts For Content Differences, Esteban N. Serrano
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Spanish-language media alongside its equivalent English-language counterpart, assumingly operate with reporting facts truthfully. However, no studies have compared the accuracy of equitable reporting between English and Spanish-language news, particularly television newscasts. Limited existing research claims that differences, such as the structure of news stories and their placement in a broadcast, may skew a narrative for those who prefer to absorb Spanish-language news in comparison to those who absorb English-language news. In this study, through use of mixed methods, U.S. market’s English and Spanish broadcast news-affiliated stations are examined to draw conclusions on whether or not there are differences in news …

The Analysis And Design Of A Circular Waveguide Coated With A Magnetized Ferrite, Hassan Ali Ragheb, Mariam Hossam
The Analysis And Design Of A Circular Waveguide Coated With A Magnetized Ferrite, Hassan Ali Ragheb, Mariam Hossam
Electrical Engineering
Abstract: This paper investigates the cut-off frequency of a perfectly conducting circular waveguide coated with an externally magnetized ferrite shell. Wave equations in both the ferrite shell and the core inside the cylinder are solved resulting in a Fourier series expansions involving Bessel and trigonometric functions with unknown coefficients. The influence of the magnetization current on the permeability tensor is considered in the analysis. By applying boundary conditions, four characteristic equations are derived, and their vanishing determinants define the cut-off frequencies of the structure. A MATLAB program is developed to numerically solve the derived equations. Results are presented for various …

Experimental And Theoretical Characterization Of Molten Salt Thermal Conductivity, Jacob C. Numbers
Experimental And Theoretical Characterization Of Molten Salt Thermal Conductivity, Jacob C. Numbers
Theses and Dissertations
Molten salts form an ideal heat transfer fluid for advanced energy generation systems, including molten salt reactors (MSR). Accurate characterization of molten salt thermal conductivity is needed to confidently predict transient thermal behavior and optimize salt properties. Measurements are hindered by salts' challenging material properties, which---in the case of the needle probe device---induced unaccounted physical changes that limited its accuracy and repeatability. Sparse thermal conductivity data in general is exacerbated by a limited fundamental understanding of molecular energy transfer in liquids. This work extends the experimental capacity for compositional studies using the needle probe and proposes a theoretical model for …
Axing The Colony: A Feminist Heroine In North Woods, Haley Osier
Axing The Colony: A Feminist Heroine In North Woods, Haley Osier
SPARK Symposium Presentations
This critical analysis applies British feminist theory to Daniel Mason’s North Woods. North Woods is a literary fiction novel that follows the multi-generational story of a house in the north woods of Massachusetts from the 17th century into the present day. Drawing from Marxist theory, British feminist theory examines a literary text in search of a feminist heroine who rebels against patriarchal power structures. This application of feminist theory to North Woods identifies the Colony as the central oppressive power and finds two possible feminist heroines to rise up in rebellion. The woman in the woods is set up …
Actionable Insights From The Liahona 1, Yoshihiko Ariizumi
Actionable Insights From The Liahona 1, Yoshihiko Ariizumi
Spiritual Proficiency
This article is based on data extracted from Liahona articles, with approximately ten pages of that data processed in two distinct ways. First, the principles were synthesized into five key concepts along with their explanations. Second, specific action plans were created to make these explanations more practical.
The original data exceeded 350 pages of Japanese text, resulting in a total of 37 different summarized sets (or themes). What is fascinating is that, while a certain amount of conceptual overlap is expected, intriguing new perspectives constantly emerge. Therefore, I highly recommend reviewing all 37 sets repeatedly (only a portion of which …
Enhancing Teamwork, Communication, And Collaboration Through Multidisciplinary Simulation Training, Jana Tenbrink
Enhancing Teamwork, Communication, And Collaboration Through Multidisciplinary Simulation Training, Jana Tenbrink
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Effective communication, teamwork, and collaboration between nurses and physicians are critical components of safe and efficient patient care, particularly in high-acuity settings, where quick decision-making and coordinated actions are essential, breakdowns in teamwork can lead to errors, adverse patient outcomes, and increased stress among healthcare providers (Newman et al., 2022). Multidisciplinary simulation training is emerging as a promising intervention to enhance team dynamics, particularly between nurses and providers, in high-pressure environments (Kiessling et al., 2022). This quasi-experimental pilot study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of multidisciplinary simulation training in acute care settings and its impact on teamwork, communication, and collaboration …
How “Cooling Off” Periods Endanger The Vulnerable: A 50-State Study Of Mandatory Separation Periods In No-Fault Divorce, Melody Mostow
How “Cooling Off” Periods Endanger The Vulnerable: A 50-State Study Of Mandatory Separation Periods In No-Fault Divorce, Melody Mostow
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
Mandatory separation periods in no-fault divorce neither advance their stated policy goals nor comport with contemporary understandings of marital dynamics, domestic abuse, or child welfare. Although mandatory separation periods are held out as tools to promote reconciliation and deter impulsive divorces, such rationales lack empirical support. Because family law in the United States is determined at the state level, this Article examines state laws that require couples to live apart in varying restrictive capacities before obtaining a no-fault divorce. To that end, this Article presents the first comprehensive 50-state study of such requirements. Research demonstrates that these laws do not …

Sanando La Herida Abierta: The Open-Borders Debate, Latinx Feminist Voices, And Spiritual Activism, Amely Logan
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
This thesis addresses the current discourse in philosophy—specifically, immigration ethics—that harms migrants, would-be migrants, and Latinx people in general. It proposes that these harms can be healed by taking seriously the contributions of Latinx feminists and paying special attention to spiritual activism. The thesis first introduces the open-borders debate in the philosophical literature and the harmful language and framing that affects migrant autonomy within the debate, specifically by looking at the work of Christopher Heath Wellman as a representative example. It reveals how, while border enforcement often results in literal mass casualties among immigrants, the language and framing around immigration …

“Sport-Extortion:” Causes, Consequences, And Solutions, Jack Berger
“Sport-Extortion:” Causes, Consequences, And Solutions, Jack Berger
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
The modern U.S. stadium-development model enables “sport-extortion,” a phenomenon in which franchise owners leverage artificial scarcity, antitrust carve-outs, and credible relocation threats to extract public subsidies that deliver negligible public benefits. Owners use the league’s monopoly power and superior negotiating leverage to pit cities against one another and extract public money for new stadiums or upgrades to their existing stadiums. The owners and community leaders who support using public money to finance these projects promise huge economic returns and development for their communities. However, a survey of the empirical literature and examination of recently approved stadium projects reveal that these …
Who Gets Remembered? Structural Barriers In The National Register Of Historic Places, Yuha Jung, Lauren Smith Madden
Who Gets Remembered? Structural Barriers In The National Register Of Historic Places, Yuha Jung, Lauren Smith Madden
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
This article examines the systemic barriers within the National Register of Historic Places, established under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, that have contributed to the underrepresentation of marginalized communities in historic preservation. Despite the United States’ diverse cultural heritage, only an estimated 3% to 10% of sites listed on the National Register reflect histories associated with racial and ethnic minority groups. Through a qualitative analysis of legislative history, federal regulations, nomination processes, and governance structures, this study identifies how key criteria such as “significance” and “integrity” have reinforced exclusionary practices. These criteria consistently prioritize architectural and tangible heritage …
Bridging The Rural Justice Gap: A Scalable Solution Rooted In Clinical Legal Education, Michelle Paxton
Bridging The Rural Justice Gap: A Scalable Solution Rooted In Clinical Legal Education, Michelle Paxton
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
The rural justice gap significantly impacts child welfare legal representation, exacerbating the challenges families face when navigating juvenile courts in rural America. Attorneys in these communities frequently encounter geographic isolation, limited access to specialized training, professional burnout, and inadequate resources, all of which hinder effective advocacy for vulnerable children and families.
This article argues that clinical legal education, when paired with structured post-graduate training and multidisciplinary consultation, offers a replicable model for addressing the rural attorney shortages in juvenile court advocacy. The Nebraska Children’s Justice and Legal Advocacy Center (NCJC) illustrates how this model can be designed and scaled to …

Development Of Microcrystalline Tests For Fentanyl, Clonazepam, And Diazepam Identification, Karis French
Honors Projects
Microcrystalline tests are chemical tests that involve the mixing of a substance with a specific reagent resulting in the formation of a crystal structure. Currently, microcrystalline tests are used as presumptive tests in forensic drug chemistry laboratories to provide the suspected identity of unknown substances. There is, however, a limited amount of research on this use of microcrystalline structures. Additionally, this existing research is outdated and does not include some of the newer commonly encountered controlled substances including fentanyl, clonazepam, and diazepam. This literature-based review attempts to identify reagents that could be used in microcrystalline tests for the identification of …

Nonlinear Excitation Control Of Multimachine Systems Via The Invariant-Set Design, Ehab Bayoumi
Mechanical Engineering
Power grids are inherently vulnerable to many uncertainties. All power networks are prone to instability because of the uncertainties inherent in the operation of power systems. Rotor-angle instability is a challenging issue, and if not properly managed, could give rise to cascading failures and even blackouts. This paper addresses the generator excitation system’s state feedback sliding mode control (SMC). The global system is divided into multiple subsystems to achieve decentralized control. A disturbance is defined as the influence of the system as a whole on a specific subsystem. The state-feedback controller is to be designed taking into account the disturbance …
