Pseudo-Traveling Waves And Bumps In Quantum And Classical Hierarchical Cellular Neural Networks, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo, B. A. Zambrano-Luna, Chayapuntika Indoung
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
We study the existence of pseudo-traveling waves and bump solutions for two classes of hierarchical cellular neural networks (CNNs) defined over the ring of p-adic integers Zp. The first type is a p-adic CNN described by a reaction-diffusion equation, while the second type is its quantum analog obtained via Wick rotation. The p-adic CNNs are hierarchical versions of the classical Chua-Yang CNNs; these networks have a tree-like hierarchical architecture with infinitely many cells and hidden layers. The states are governed by integro-differential equations on Zp. The p-adic traveling waves behave fundamentally differently from their Archimedean counterparts. A traveling wave restricted …

This study examines how pre-service teachers use character strengths language to understand and support their wellbeing during professional experience. The project responds to the persistent challenge of teacher stress and early burnout by reframing placement as a context for developing wellbeing capability rather than merely demonstrating competency. Guided by strengths-based pedagogy, the study investigates how strengths are combined, moderated, and occasionally brought into tension as pre-service teachers navigate the demands of learning to teach. A qualitative design was employed, drawing on reflective narratives from 1,066 pre-service teachers across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Thematic analysis explored how participants articulated strengths synergies, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been extensively deployed in logistics support, surveillance, and disaster relief. However, their open communication networks and inherently vulnerable navigation systems render them susceptible to false map information injection attacks (FMIIA). To effectively mitigate the impact of FMIIA, this paper presents a UAV local flight trajectory optimization framework that integrates a robust attack detection method based on initial excitation (IE) and an efficient local path reconstruction approach utilizing the Marden theorem. First, an IE-based adaptive robust observer is formulated, where IE enhances the observability of the system's input-output responses, enabling joint estimation of the UAV's …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Underground hydrogen storage (UHS) in salt caverns is a promising solution for large-scale renewable energy storage, but its long-term stability may be compromised by hydrogenotrophic microorganisms such as sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB). This study integrates global salt basin analysis, numerical modelling, and laboratory experiments to assess microbial risks associated with the hydrogen storage. We evaluated salt deposits across six continents, reviewed microbial communities in seawater sources commonly used for the leaching, and simulated SRB behaviour under varying hydrogen concentrations. Experiments using both commercial SRB strains and indigenous consortia from Western Australia revealed minimal microbial activity under hypersaline, low-carbon conditions. These findings …

What Makes An Analogy Effective For Students’ Learning Of Mathematics? Conceptualising Analogy Effectiveness For Teaching Mathematics, Vesife Hatisaru, Steven Richardson
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Analogies are commonly used in mathematics teaching as a means to promote understanding of new potentially abstract concepts, by linking them to well-understood contexts. Despite strong intuition that analogies are helpful in supporting students’ learning of mathematics, there is a lack of agreement on how to objectively judge the utility or conceptual affordances of these analogies. In this paper, we aim to conceptualise how to assess the effectiveness of an analogy by employing Gentner’s structure-mapping theory to analogies and explore two teacher-made analogies (the ‘child-mother’ and the ‘machine’) for learning the formal definition of a function as illustrative examples. By …

School of Psychology
Background: Vicarious trauma (VT), the psychological distress that occurs from exposure to the trauma of others, is prevalent among therapists, but has not previously been explored in those working specifically with survivors of sexual trauma. This qualitative study explores counsellors‘ and psychotherapists‘ experiences of VT when working with survivors of sexual abuse. Method: Semi-structured interviews uncovered complex emotional and psychological impacts, highlighting how exposure to traumatic sexual abuse narratives can affect counsellors‘ and psychotherapists‘ wellbeing, and professional and personal identity. A reflexive thematic analysis was conducted. Results: Four key themes were identified. (1) The Impact of VT reveals the emotional …

We propose an exact linear programming (LP)-based solution approach to the Guaranteed Service Model (GSM), one of the most widely applied models for optimizing safety stock placement in supply chain networks. Our approach handles any directed acyclic network and any cost function that depends on a stage’s incoming and outgoing service times. It scales polynomially in the number of nodes n in the network, pseudo-polynomially with respect to the bit size of the maximum replenishment time M, and (for fixed M) exponentially in its treewidth, which quantifies how “tree-like” a network is and can be much smaller …

Muthanna Medical Journal
Objective: Renal failure is related to metabolic and endocrine disorders, in particular chronic kidney disease-Mineral and Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD). In this study, the clinical utility of serum Proenkephalin A (PENK) as a novel renal biomarker was evaluated, and its changes and correlation matrix with established renal, mineral, bone and hematological parameters in patients with renal failure were studied. Materials and Methods: A case control study was performed including patients diagnosed clinically with renal failure and age and gender matched healthy controls. Venous blood samples were collected to analyze serum PENK, including urea, creatinine, parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium, phosphate, Vitamin D, …

The performed HbA1c tests were compared with baseline results to identify differences, …
Investigating The Impact Of Outreach Programmes On Second Level Students In Formal And Informal Computer Science Education In Ireland, Karen Nolan
Doctoral
Computer Science (CS) education at second-level in Ireland has undergone significant development, including the introduction of the Leaving Certificate Computer Science (LCCS). However, the existing literature examined demonstrated that access to and participation in CS education is uneven, resulting in many students having limited exposure CS at second-level before making educational choices. At the same time, students who elect to study LCCS require appropriate support as they engage with programming and other aspects of a relatively new formal curriculum. This thesis investigates the function of school-based CS outreach in helping students at these various phases of their second-level CS education …

Modern Youth Or Moral Decadence: Discourses On South Korea’S “Youth Culture” In Magazines Of The Late 1960s And Early 1970s, Thibaut Diverchy
Asia Pacific Perspectives
The cultural phenomenon known as “youth culture” (ch’ŏngnyŏn munhwa) emerged in South Korean society at the turn of the 1970s. It encompasses Western fashion trends, music genres, leisure and nightlife. Labeled as a foreign and decadent trend by the authorities, this so-called counterculture was the target of repeated crackdowns. It is sometimes perceived as a force of protest or resistance, but it had more ambiguous relations to the regime. Popular entertainment magazines such as the Sunday Seoul or the Chugan Kyŏnghyang helped propagate youth culture and provided resources about new trends to young people, but also kept a certain distance …

The thalamus is a critical subcortical hub that relays sensorimotor information and regulates higher-order cognitive processes. Accurate delineation of thalamic nuclei is essential for elucidating disease mechanisms and tracking clinical progression. In this study, we compared two segmentation approaches implemented in FreeSurfer: the conventional structural method and a joint framework that integrates diffusion tensor imaging. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from 24 healthy controls (HC), 27 patients with cognitively normal Parkinson’s disease (PD-CN), and 33 Parkinson's disease patients with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) were analyzed. Segmentation methods were compared in HC to assess their effect on volume estimates. Group comparisons …
