Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Hypertension is a leading contributor to global morbidity and mortality, arising from the interplay of genetic and environmental risk factors together with the dysregulation of multiple physiological systems involved in blood pressure control. Recent advances have established the gut as a central regulator, implicating the intestinal microbiota and barrier integrity in the modulation of blood pressure. Alterations in the gut microbial consortium, along with changes in levels of metabolites produced by the microbiota, have been associated with blood pressure regulation in animal models and human studies. Key microbial metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids, trimethylamine-N-oxide, and bile acids influence endothelial function, …

Half-Armenian, Fully Diasporic: Navigating Memory, Trauma, And Identity In Marcella Polain’S The Edge Of The World, Sebnem Nazli Karali

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This work of creative nonfiction employs a hybrid creative-critical methodology that combines autobiographical narrative and interview-based research within the framework of memory studies. Drawing on Marianne Hirsch’s concept of postmemory, the article examines how knowledge of the Armenian Catastrophe is transmitted, refracted, and contested across generations in the Armenian diaspora in Australia. It situates The Edge of the World, Marcella Polain’s semi-autobiographical novel, within broader traditions of diasporic and postmemory writing, arguing for its significance as a literary meditation on historical rupture and inherited trauma. Interweaving Karali’s personal diasporic narrative with a close reading of Polain’s novel and her in-depth …

Horrible, Fantastic, Traumatic: Victim-Survivors’ Experiences Of Police Interviews In Sexual Offence Cases And Suggestions Moving Forward, Gemma Hamilton, Giselle Woodley

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study explored adult victim-survivors’ experiences of reporting sexual violence to police in Australia, focusing on their suggestions for supporting future victim-survivors. By drawing on feminist standpoint theory, qualitative interviews with 26 victim-survivors indicated a range of experiences, yet strikingly similar concerns and suggestions for improvement. Using reflexive thematic analysis, key themes included the importance of interview room settings; the interviewer's interpersonal care; the presence of support people; and further investigative support when victims felt like investigators. The study offers both short-term and longer-term suggestions for supporting victim-survivors in sexual offence investigations, with a focus on minimising secondary victimisation.

Migration Literacy And Commercial Intermediaries: The Debt Financed Labour Migrations Of Chinese Working-Class Tradesmen In Boomtime Australia, Catriona Turnbull Jan 2026

Migration Literacy And Commercial Intermediaries: The Debt Financed Labour Migrations Of Chinese Working-Class Tradesmen In Boomtime Australia, Catriona Turnbull

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This paper explores how constrained informational capital makes migrants dependent upon commercial intermediaries to facilitate their migration. It proposes migration literacy as a critical dimension of mobility capital and as a way to articulate the dependencies engendered through low information capital in relation to the regulatory regimes of the immigration state. These ideas are illustrated with reference to a cohort of working-class labour migrants to Australia whose experiences are shaped by their low migration literacy. Trade skilled migrants from China paid high fees to chains of brokers to secure sponsored employment in Australian workshops. Their low migration literacy, the result …

Missing Planktivore Functions Drive Global Variation In Reef Fish Productivity, James Gahan, Helen F. Yan, David R. Bellwood, Graham J. Edgar, Leo T. Nankervis, Alexandre C. Siqueira, Rick D. Stuart-Smith, Sterling B. Tebbett

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The functioning of high-diversity ecosystems, such as coral reefs, is intrinsically tied to the integrity and efficiency of the trophic pathways within these systems. Coral reef productivity depends, in part, on the input of external nutrients, primarily zooplankton, that is assimilated by extraordinarily diverse fish communities. The plankton–planktivore trophic pathway is thus crucial for sustaining the productivity that exemplifies coral reef ecosystems; however, it remains poorly understood at large spatial scales. Here we explore global patterns in reef fish community structure, revealing a major discrepancy between the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean in the productivity and fisheries potential of planktivorous reef fishes. …

Music As A Distraction During Reading: Music Listening Habits Of University Students, Lindsey Cooke, Craig Speelman, Ross Hollett Jan 2026

Music As A Distraction During Reading: Music Listening Habits Of University Students, Lindsey Cooke, Craig Speelman, Ross Hollett

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Recent research indicates high proportions of individuals report they have music playing while they read. This behaviour has implications for effective comprehension, as some scholars suggest the presence of music depletes cognitive resources, resulting in a greater chance of becoming distracted. By contrast, some have claimed that listening to music can improve cognitive performance by increasing physiological arousal and improving mood. This study captured self-reported behaviours of university students regarding whether they chose to listen to music while reading for study purposes. Reasons for listening varied, with reports of increased motivation, enhanced focus, or masking external noise. The most listened …

No Screens Before Two: How First-Time Australian Parents Negotiate Enduring Digital Media Guidelines, Stephanie C. Milford, Emma Jayakumar, Harrison W. See, Lelia Green Jan 2026

No Screens Before Two: How First-Time Australian Parents Negotiate Enduring Digital Media Guidelines, Stephanie C. Milford, Emma Jayakumar, Harrison W. See, Lelia Green

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Digital parenting guidance often fails to reflect early caregiving realities, particularly for first-time parents navigating screentime. Although professional guidelines have shifted from rigid time limits toward co-engagement and content quality, these shifts are inconsistently communicated and poorly absorbed into public discourse. Meanwhile, technopanic narratives fuel confusion, guilt, and social judgement. While some studies link extended screen use with adverse outcomes, we examine how correlational findings become blanket prescriptions in early caregiving. Drawing on two interview rounds and three focus groups with 23 Australian first-time parents of children aged birth-to-four, and informed by a socio-ecological approach, we explore how parents interpret …

One Of These Things Is Not Like The Others: Disentangling The Concepts Of Range Of Motion Versus Flexibility, And Flexibility Training Versus Stretching, José Afonso, Anthony J. Blazevich, David George Behm, Markus Tilp, Konstantin Warneke

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In this Current Opinion, we revisit key terminological distinctions in sports sciences, emphasizing the implications of conflating related but distinct concepts, particularly range of motion (ROM) versus flexibility and flexibility training versus stretching. While often used interchangeably, these terms represent nuanced constructs with distinct physiological and practical implications. ROM encompasses both modifiable (e.g., soft tissue extensibility, neural control) and non-modifiable factors (e.g., bone structure), whereas flexibility is only one of several trainable components of ROM, largely referring to the extensibility of periarticular soft tissues. Misunderstanding these distinctions risks erroneous assessments and inappropriate exercise prescriptions. We also challenge the common practice …

Providing Help In Europe: Are In-Household Care And Outside-Household Support Associated With Grandparental Child Care?, Roosa Maria Savela, David A. Coall, Mirkka Danielsbacka, Antti O. Tanskanen

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Grandparental child care is a vital form of social support that can enhance family well-being. Prior studies have found that older adults who provide support to one individual are more likely to offer help to others within their families and social networks. However, little research has examined whether helping others is associated with grandparental child care. Using data from the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe, covering 27 countries, and using multinomial regression models, we show that (a) support provided to individuals outside the household is associated with increased grandparental child care, whereas (b) family care provided within …

Small-Molecule Therapies Targeting Tumor-Associated Macrophages In Glioma: Mechanisms And Potential, Hua Wang, Heng Luo, Haijian Zhong, Amy Ockleton, Feng Jiang, Renhui Yi, Shaochun Yang, Ming Li Jan 2026

Small-Molecule Therapies Targeting Tumor-Associated Macrophages In Glioma: Mechanisms And Potential, Hua Wang, Heng Luo, Haijian Zhong, Amy Ockleton, Feng Jiang, Renhui Yi, Shaochun Yang, Ming Li

Peninsula Medical School

Glioblastoma, a highly prevalent and aggressive primary brain tumor, is marked by poor prognosis due to the blood-brain barrier and chemoresistance, which limit conventional pharmacotherapy. Recent research has pivoted toward targeting the tumor microenvironment, where tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) drive gliomagenesis and malignant progression through immunosuppressive signaling. Small-molecule agents targeting TAMs have emerged as promising therapeutics, capable of reprogramming macrophage polarization, modulating immune cell dynamics, and suppressing glioma growth. This review explores the mechanistic roles of TAMs in glioma and evaluates how small-molecule compounds exert antitumor effects via TAM modulation. These insights lay a foundation for developing next-generation TAM-targeted therapies, offering …

The Utility Of Fret/Flim-Based Bioassays For Monitoring Nrf2 Activation In Single Live Cells, Dina Dikovskaya, Albena T Dinkova-Kostova Jan 2026

The Utility Of Fret/Flim-Based Bioassays For Monitoring Nrf2 Activation In Single Live Cells, Dina Dikovskaya, Albena T Dinkova-Kostova

Peninsula Medical School

The Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 - Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Keap1-Nrf2) partnership is vital for protection against oxidative stress, and its dysregulation has been linked to the pathogenesis of numerous chronic diseases. Under homeostatic conditions, Keap1 targets Nrf2 for ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. When Keap1 is inactivated by electrophiles or Keap1-Nrf2 protein-protein interaction (PPI) inhibitors (termed inducers), Nrf2 accumulates and, in association with a small musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma (sMaf) protein, induces the transcription of networks of genes encoding cytoprotective proteins. To understand the PPIs between Nrf2 and Keap1 and the effect of inducers in the cellular context, we expressed …

#Shoutyourabortion And Being Heard: The Affordances Of Hashtags For Feminist Counterpublics In Hostile Digital Atmospheres, Claire Fitzpatrick

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This article critically explores counterpublic responses to the overturning of Roe v Wade and the intense contestation on Twitter (now X) between pro-abortion and anti-abortion advocates. Focusing on networked acts of deliberation, this study shows how #ShoutYourAbortion and #RoevWade facilitated the formation of defensive publics and Counterpublics. Hashtag feminism can enable affected groups to share experiences that are often marginalised by traditional media outlets, while witnessing and affirming similar experiences shared by others within their community. In this article, I examine the extent to which the collectivising hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion facilitates deliberation and listening in the context of polarising abortion debates …

Super-Resolution Learning Inspired Spectral-Spatial Correlation Network For Hyperspectral Target Detection, Jiaping Zhong, Yunsong Li, Jianxin Li, Yanzi Shi, Weiying Xie, Paolo Gamba Jan 2026

Super-Resolution Learning Inspired Spectral-Spatial Correlation Network For Hyperspectral Target Detection, Jiaping Zhong, Yunsong Li, Jianxin Li, Yanzi Shi, Weiying Xie, Paolo Gamba

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Hyperspectral target detection (HTD) aims at extracting targets from complex backgrounds while overcoming noise interference. Existing deep learning models for HTD usually suffer from low spatial resolution and unitary representation, especially in space-borne platforms. Super-resolution, as a critical technology to enhance the spatial details, could effectively address the aforementioned issue. To make super-resolution absolutely pose positive effects on target detection, this paper proposes an end-to-end novel super-resolution learning inspired spectral-spatial correlation network for hyperspectral target detection (SR-HTD) from the perspective of spatial and spectral regularization to achieve high-precision detection. Specifically, we designed a Spatial Correlation Aggregation (SCA) module inspired by …

Transnational Youth And Social Mobility: The Role Of Family Financial Support In Unsettled Lives, Alexandra Lee, Anita Harris, Loretta Baldassar Jan 2026

Transnational Youth And Social Mobility: The Role Of Family Financial Support In Unsettled Lives, Alexandra Lee, Anita Harris, Loretta Baldassar

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Transnational mobility is typically seen as an opportunity to break out of fixed class positions and facilitate social mobility. However, the availability of parental support remains a persistent if complex determinant of the social mobility opportunities available to young adults who move abroad. The influence of family support and class background on youth social mobility has been clearly recognised in class scholarship in Australia. Yet, this relationship has remained under-examined in transnational mobility contexts, where social mobility has tended to be examined more in relation to young people’s employment opportunities and visa pathways. Seeking to fill this gap, our paper …
