Fault Tolerance Of Accelerated Asynchronous Fixed-Point Iterations On Flexible Computing Infrastructure, Evan Coleman, Masha Sosonkina Jan 2026

Fault Tolerance Of Accelerated Asynchronous Fixed-Point Iterations On Flexible Computing Infrastructure, Evan Coleman, Masha Sosonkina

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Asynchronous iterative methods tolerate straggling processors by allowing workers to proceed with stale data, but at a cost: the iterates become inconsistent, potentially degrading convergence. We investigate whether convergence accelerators such as Anderson acceleration compensate for this degradation. We experimentally study three fixed-point iterations: the Jacobi method for sparse linear systems, value iteration for the Bellman equation, and the Hartree–Fock self-consistent field (SCF) iteration. The experiments are conducted using a high-performance execution framework, Ray, which abstracts the complexity of distributed systems and enables code parallelization and fault injection with minimal changes.

We establish two main results. First, straggler tolerance is …

Physics-Informed Temperature Prediction Of Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Decomposition-Enhanced Lstm And Bilstm Models, Seyed Saeed Madani, Yasmin Shabeer, Michael Fowler, Satyam Panchal, Carlos Ziebert, Hicham Chaoui, François Allard

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Accurately forecasting the operating temperature of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is essential for preventing thermal runaway, extending service life, and ensuring the safe operation of electric vehicles and stationary energy-storage systems. This work introduces a unified, physics-informed, and data-driven temperature-prediction framework that integrates mathematically governed preprocessing, electrothermal decomposition, and sequential deep learning architectures. The methodology systematically applies the governing relations to convert raw temperature measurements into trend, seasonal, and residual components, thereby isolating long-term thermal accumulation, reversible entropy-driven oscillations, and irreversible resistive heating. These physically interpretable signatures serve as structured inputs to machine learning and deep learning models trained on temporally …

Phonics And Friends: A Critical Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of Popular Teacher Influencers' Content, Zachary T. Milford

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This critical multimodal discourse analysis examined how five teacher-influencers aligned with the Science of Reading (SoR) movement performed authority, constructed discourses, and used affective and semiotic resources in viral TikTok videos about reading instruction. Drawing on Kress and van Leeuwen's (2001) multimodal social semiotics, Fairclough's (1992) critical discourse analysis, Foucault's (1977, 1982) theorizations of power, Papacharissi's (2014) theory of affective publics, Ong's (1982) secondary orality, and Taussig's (1993) mimesis and alterity, this interpretive, qualitative, multiple-case study analyzed fifty viral TikTok videos and four semi-structured interviews with teacher-influencers. Data were analyzed through within-case and within-mode coding, cross-modal analysis, and cross-case analysis …

An Ethical Analysis Of International Graduate Student Workers' (Igsws) Employment Vulnerability, Adeola F. Oladeji Jan 2026

An Ethical Analysis Of International Graduate Student Workers' (Igsws) Employment Vulnerability, Adeola F. Oladeji

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

International graduate student workers (IGSWs) occupy a distinctive position within U.S. higher education as students, employees, and temporary visa holders. Their academic progress, financial support, and legal authorization to remain in the United States are often closely intertwined, creating dependencies that heighten their vulnerability to exploitation, unequal treatment, and institutional power imbalances. Although previous scholarship has documented these challenges from empirical, legal, and policy perspectives, comparatively little attention has been given to universities' ethical responsibilities toward IGSWs.

This dissertation examines how U.S. higher education institutions should fulfill their ethical responsibilities to international graduate student workers. Grounded in Dewey's pattern of …

A Combined Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry And Numerical Simulation Approach For Supersonic Wind Tunnel Calibration, Joshua Gary, Josiah Mcdermott, Kyle Worden, Serhat Hosder, Davide Viganò Jan 2026

A Combined Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry And Numerical Simulation Approach For Supersonic Wind Tunnel Calibration, Joshua Gary, Josiah Mcdermott, Kyle Worden, Serhat Hosder, Davide Viganò

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Supersonic wind tunnels remain essential tools for high-speed aerodynamics research, yet the characterization of their free-stream conditions remains technically challenging and lacks standardized criteria for defining "good" flow quality. While traditional calibration methods rely on intrusive probes, recent advances in optical diagnostics offer new opportunities for non-intrusive characterization. In this work, we demonstrate a novel use of Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (Tomo-PIV), combined with numerical simulations, as a methodology for supersonic wind tunnel calibration. The approach is applied to the recently upgraded Missouri S&T Supersonic Wind Tunnel, where Tomo-PIV measurements reveal uniform flow with low angularity and low turbulent noise …

Tomo-Piv Study Of Baseline Flow Structures Behind A Strut Injector, Josiah Mcdermott, Connor Bell, Davide Viganò Jan 2026

Tomo-Piv Study Of Baseline Flow Structures Behind A Strut Injector, Josiah Mcdermott, Connor Bell, Davide Viganò

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stabilizing combustion in scramjet engines is a formidable challenge due to the small-time scales afforded for air-fuel mixing. Numerous studies in this area have demonstrated the potential of strut-style platforms for fuel injection and mixing enhancement, which remains an active area of research. In the Aerodynamics Research Laboratory at Missouri S&T, a strut-style injector system has recently been installed. In this study, we characterize the baseline flow structures behind this platform absent fuel injection. The wake generated by a strut itself has an appreciable impact on the resulting air-fuel mixing, which motivates its characterization. In future studies, this characterization will …

Modeling Rank Distribution And The Relative Importance Factor Index In Discrete Power-Law Models: Application To Social Resilience Using The Scopus Database, Brian Llinas, Jose Padilla, Humberto Llinas, Erika Frydenlund, Katherine Palacio Jan 2026

Modeling Rank Distribution And The Relative Importance Factor Index In Discrete Power-Law Models: Application To Social Resilience Using The Scopus Database, Brian Llinas, Jose Padilla, Humberto Llinas, Erika Frydenlund, Katherine Palacio

VMASC Publications

Prior research on power-law distributions has primarily focused on modeling frequency patterns, with less attention given to rank distributions and how ranked positions reflect relative importance among elements. In discrete power-law distributions, frequency-based metrics often provide limited discrimination in the tail, where elements may exhibit similar counts but differ in relative dominance. These patterns are especially evident, for instance, in academic publishing, where keywords, affiliations, and citations commonly exhibit power-law behavior. To address this limitation, we introduce the Relative Importance Factor (RIF) Index, a statistical measure derived from the estimated discrete power-law rank distribution rather than an additional independent parameter. …

Colombia has become the principal host of Venezuelan migrants in Latin America, prompting a complex mix of solidarity, anxiety, and discrimination. This study offers a multidimensional analysis of Twitter (now X) discourse on Venezuelan migration in Colombia between 2014 and 2022, using natural language processing, geolocation inference, sentiment analysis, and manual annotation of derogatory terms. Drawing from 7.4 million posts, we examine how online discourse evolves across time, space, and language. While negative sentiment is pronounced in original tweets during periods of political and social unrest, our findings highlight that users tend to amplify neutral and positive messages—over 67% of …

[Abstract For] Bond Pricing Mechanics Beyond Yield-To-Maturity Based Calculations, Maura Alexander, Tom Arnold, Xiu (Summer) Liu Jan 2026

[Abstract For] Bond Pricing Mechanics Beyond Yield-To-Maturity Based Calculations, Maura Alexander, Tom Arnold, Xiu (Summer) Liu

Finance Faculty Publications

Three methods for pricing bonds are presented: using a constant yield to maturity, using the yield curve with discount factors, and using implied forward rates from the yield curve with backward induction.  By moving beyond the first method, more dynamic duration and convexity analyses emerge.  Further, logical connections and extensions are made in regard to pricing bonds with embedded options, the calculation of a swap rate, and the “bond bootstrapping” process for building a yield curve.

Toward Neurosymbolic Reinforcement Learning Via Editable Specifications, Vedant Khandelwal, Hong Yung Yip, Amit Sheth Jan 2026

Toward Neurosymbolic Reinforcement Learning Via Editable Specifications, Vedant Khandelwal, Hong Yung Yip, Amit Sheth

Publications

Reinforcement learning systems are commonly adapted to new settings by retraining or fine-tuning policies. This default is costly, difficult to audit, and poorly aligned with structured requirement changes such as revised safety rules, new operational constraints, or updated user preferences. We argue for an alternative abstraction: adaptation via edits to an external, human-readable specification that the agent consults at execution time. We propose conditioning decision-making on an editable knowledge graph encoding (i) rules capturing action applicability and high-level effects, (ii) hard constraints defining feasibility, and (iii) soft preferences shaping tradeoffs among feasible behaviors. Requirement changes become graph edits, not policy …

Nanoscale Analysis Of Ssb-Reco Interplay In Ssb Interaction With The Target, Shivkumar Sharma Irukuvajjula, Shaun Filliaux, Yuri L. Lyubchenko Jan 2026

Nanoscale Analysis Of Ssb-Reco Interplay In Ssb Interaction With The Target, Shivkumar Sharma Irukuvajjula, Shaun Filliaux, Yuri L. Lyubchenko

Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences

Single-stranded DNA-binding protein (SSB) coats single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) and recruits downstream factors, yet this same coating must be cleared for SSB-interacting proteins to bind. RecA is a central protein in homologous recombination, which requires SSB-free ssDNA to load during the process. RecO, a recombination mediator protein, is thought to regulate this handoff, but it has not been shown directly that RecO drives the release of full-length, ssDNA-bound SSB. Using atomic force microscopy, we show that RecO actively displaces full-length wild-type SSB from a defined ssDNA substrate, reducing occupancy from 67% to 29%. Displacement efficiency decreases after deleting the C-terminal tip …

Leveraging Cross-Reactivity For Dual Serological Detection Of Closely Related Schistosoma Species, Oyetunde T. Oyeyemi, Lisa M. Shollenberger

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Schistosomiasis is a disease of poverty that is highly prevalent in Sub-Saharan African countries. Cross-reacting proteins in Schistosoma mansoni (Sm) and S. haematobium (Sh) have been reported to pose diagnostic challenges. Proteins from these two parasites may help overcome diagnostic limitations caused by cross-reactivity and poor species discrimination in serological assays. The study aims to identify cross-reacting protein markers from S. mansoni and S. haematobium for possible concurrent diagnosis of the two parasites. High-quality protein extracts were prepared from the eggs (soluble egg antigen, SEA) and adult worms (Schistosoma worm antigens preparation, SWAP) of S. haematobium and S. mansoni …

Evaluating The Relationship Between Motor Symptoms And Levodopa Dosage In Parkinson’S Disease, Frank Ferrari Jan 2026

Evaluating The Relationship Between Motor Symptoms And Levodopa Dosage In Parkinson’S Disease, Frank Ferrari

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Parkinson’s disease (PD) has a clear lack of dosing guidelines or standard treatment protocols, leaving physicians to develop individualized treatment plans to handle the needs of PD patients. The long-term progressive nature of Parkinson’s requires consistent care and updates to medication regimens. This puts significant strain on the healthcare systems tasked with treating them. With an increasing number of Parkinson’s patients and a plateau of professionals to care for them, patients may soon experience decreased physician availability, longer wait times, and worse quality of life outcomes. This study evaluated the relationship between PD motor symptoms, measured through the MDS-UPDRS Part …
