Soil Microbial Recovery From A Pulse Disturbance Following A Press Disturbance, Gretchen Bahmueller Sep 2026

Soil Microbial Recovery From A Pulse Disturbance Following A Press Disturbance, Gretchen Bahmueller

Master's Theses and Capstones

Though a natural phenomenon, disturbance events like drought and freeze-thaw cycles are increasing in frequency and severity due to climate change. At the forefront of these disturbances are soil microorganisms, which provide essential ecosystem services like carbon and nitrogen cycling. Previous work has reported responses of microbial communities to either a long-term press disturbance or a short-term pulse disturbance, with few studies examining how these disturbance types interact to influence microbial activity. This work sought to understand how soil microorganisms recover from a one month-long simulated moisture or freezing disturbance after experiencing 30+ years of soil warming. Heated and control …

Using The Plasma Dose-Response Technique To Determine The Bioavailability Of Commercial Rumen-Protected Amino Acids, Tessa Mae Baillargeon

Master's Theses and Capstones

There continues to be gaps in comparing the bioavailability of different rumen-protected methionine and lysine products. Many techniques have been developed to analyze these products with in vivo techniques considered the gold standard. The following three studies were proposed to determine the relative bioavailability value of products containing lysine and various forms of methionine using the plasma dose-response method as described by Whitehouse et al., 2017. Trial one compared two levels (18 g/d and 36 g/d) of L-Met infusion and fed LipoActiv L-Met 60. Trial two compared infusions of, and products containing, DL-Met and HMTBa (2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanoic acid). Trial three used …

Understanding The Functionality Of Tuberculate Ectomycorrhiza Of Quercus Species Within The Context Of Soil Warming, Andre David Chiang Sep 2026

Understanding The Functionality Of Tuberculate Ectomycorrhiza Of Quercus Species Within The Context Of Soil Warming, Andre David Chiang

Master's Theses and Capstones

Tuberculate ectomycorrhizae (TECM) of oak are understudied, morphologically unique ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal structures whose initial observation at the Harvard Forest long-term ecological research site (Petersham, MA) were confined strictly to warmed plots. This study provided the first quantification of oak-associated TECM under experimental warming, characterizing their lifecycle and ecological role. We quantified and characterized TECM over three sampling periods during the growing season (May, June, August) of 2025 at two soil warming experiments at Harvard Forest: Barre Woods and Prospect Hill. We also identified the fungi associated with TECM structures, along with sclerotia found in the same samples. We quantified …

High Spatiotemporal Snow Cover Mapping With Multiscale Observations In A Transitional Montane Forest, Rashik Raj Koirala

Master's Theses and Capstones

Accurate estimation of fractional snow-covered area (fSCA) in forested areas is critical for understanding snowmelt dynamics and meltwater inputs to streams, yet snow cover mapping in forested areas is still challenging using ground-based and satellite-based snow observations. This thesis develops and evaluates multi-scale approaches for monitoring fSCA using field cameras, upscales it to watershed scale using unoccupied aerial systems (UAS), and develops a framework to extract snow cover in forests using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery in mixed deciduous and coniferous forests of New Hampshire, USA.

In the first study, machine learning classifiers’ ability to extract fSCA from field camera RGB imagery …

Linking Vegetation Phenology To Dissolved Organic Matter Wet Deposition, Paola Miramontes Gonzalez Sep 2026

Linking Vegetation Phenology To Dissolved Organic Matter Wet Deposition, Paola Miramontes Gonzalez

Master's Theses and Capstones

Atmospheric wet deposition delivers important inputs of organic and inorganic compounds to ecosystems, yet the drivers of dissolved organic matter variability in wet deposition remain poorly understood. Dissolved organic matter (DOM), composed of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), can make up a substantial fraction of total carbon and nitrogen delivered through wet deposition and may play a role in shaping ecosystem nutrient inputs. Although vegetation emissions have been hypothesized as drivers of DOM wet deposition due to increased concentrations of DOC and DON during the growing season, no study has directly evaluated whether metrics of vegetative …

(Wp 2026-04) The Concept Of Position And Its Ontological Meaning In The History Of Economics, John B. Davis Sep 2026

(Wp 2026-04) The Concept Of Position And Its Ontological Meaning In The History Of Economics, John B. Davis

Economics Working Papers

This paper examines the concept of relative position in the history of economics understood as ‘being in a position’ in a structure of positions. This is first discussed in macro-distributional terms in connection with Ricardo and Marx and in micro-behavioral terms in connection with Du Bois and Veblen. The paper then discusses two recent approaches in economics that employ the concept of relative position in a combined macro-micro analysis: the capability approach and stratification economics. For explicitly ontological analysis of the concept, the paper compares three different interpretative strategies from outside economics: Cambridge social positioning theory, embodied and distributed cognition …

The Revival Of Honor Killing In Iranian Kurdistan: A Sociological Analysis Of Gender, Land, And Identity, Parviz Sobhani Sep 2026

The Revival Of Honor Killing In Iranian Kurdistan: A Sociological Analysis Of Gender, Land, And Identity, Parviz Sobhani

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

Honor is a foundational yet restrictive sociocultural construct in Kurdish society of western Iran. Transgressions of its boundaries, particularly by women, are historically met with violent sanction. Despite processes of modernization, honor killings have re-emerged as a conspicuous phenomenon in Iranian Kurdistan, suggesting an active revival rather than a passive residue of tradition. This study employed a qualitative, interpretive phenomenological approach. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 21 social scientists and researchers from January 2022 to February 2024 in Iranian Kurdistan.  A grounded theory framework guided the thematic analysis. Findings reveal a dual symbolic encoding of honor: it …

Pornography And Men's Violence Against Women And Children: From Production To Consumption, Gail Dines Phd., Mandy Sanchez Phd Sep 2026

Pornography And Men's Violence Against Women And Children: From Production To Consumption, Gail Dines Phd., Mandy Sanchez Phd

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The average age of first viewing mainstream pornography for boys is around ten to twelve years old. The pornography they encounter is largely from “tube sites,” named after YouTube, which are popular because they require no registration, no payment, and no subscription. For the most part, an adolescent only needs access to a digital device to view hundreds of thousands of free videos. As we discuss in this article, the weight of the scientific evidence shows that viewing pornography is associated with multiple social, emotional, sexual, and cognitive harms. However, none of these studies provide a detailed analysis of …

International Law And Power Politics: On Koskenniemi's Perceptions Of Justice, Monica Hakimi Sep 2026

International Law And Power Politics: On Koskenniemi's Perceptions Of Justice, Monica Hakimi

Faculty Scholarship

Martti Koskenniemi wrote ‘Perceptions of Justice’ against the backdrop of the 2003 Iraq War. The piece draws a stark distinction between American and European conceptions of justice – and approaches to international law. Over twenty years later, his distinction might still (or again) resonate. This retrospective analyses it in light of his other work and more contemporary events, arguing that it is a mix of misguided and confused. The United States and Europe have for decades, if not centuries, been profoundly entwined; each has significantly shaped and been shaped by its relationship with the other. The urgent question now is …

Agentic Ai For Autonomous Marketing: Taxonomy, Benchmark, And An Open-Source Agent, Prashidda Thapa, Shraddha Khadka, Pragyan Sharma, Ana Rai

Student Publications

Marketing automation is moving beyond rule-based systems and prompt-driven generative tools toward agentic AI: large language model (LLM) based agents that plan, act, and adapt under high-level objectives. Existing analyses are largely conceptual and commercial platforms are proprietary, leaving the community without reproducible baselines. We contribute three artifacts. First, a compact taxonomy organized around an augmentation–automation-autonomization continuum and a Perceive–Reason–Act(PRA)cycle that distinguishes autonomous agents from rule-based automation. Second, MarketingAgent, an open-source ReAct agent with six tools spanning SQL access, RFM segmentation, XGBoost churn prediction, campaign and email generation, and budget allocation. Third, the Marketing Agent Benchmark (MAB), a 15-task suite …

Equal-weighted ensembling is often treated as a default upgrade over individual machine learning models. We test this assumption on one-day-ahead stock-price prediction across five sector diversified U.S. assets (2015–2024) by comparing Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Regression (SVR), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and their equal-weighted average under identical features, preprocessing, and chronological splits. Pooled across assets, LSTM attains the lowest test-set RMSE (17.70), SVR is statistically tied with LSTM under the Diebold and Mariano test (𝑝 = 0.494), the equal-weighted ensemble is third (18.13), and RF is last (20.33); SVR beats the ensemble at 𝑝 = 0.001 (Bonferroni-significant) while LSTMbeats …

Litigating Birthright Citizenship In The Shadow Of World War Ii: The Continuing Relevance Of A Forgotten Case, Rachel E. Rosenbloom

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

With the question of birthright citizenship before the Supreme Court this term in Trump v. Barbara, this Article explores the last time that federal courts confronted an attempt to restrict birthright citizenship. It tells the story of two lawsuits, Regan v. King and Fisk v. Wade, filed in 1942 by organizations seeking to overturn United States v. Wong Kim Ark, the 1898 Supreme Court decision that affirmed the broad scope of birthright citizenship under the Fourteenth Amendment. While the cases left little mark doctrinally, their history sheds light on a dimension of birthright citizenship litigation that has …

Police Surveillance And The Perils Of Techno-Solutionism, Prithika Balakrishnan Sep 2026

Police Surveillance And The Perils Of Techno-Solutionism, Prithika Balakrishnan

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

This Article charts domestic law enforcement’s use of video surveillance, beginning in the backlash to the Civil Rights movement in the late 1960s, continuing through the War on Terror and, more recently, in the context of the post-George Floyd public critiques of policing. The undergirding philosophy of policing’s embrace of surveillance technology is techno-solutionism, the view that all complex social situations can be simplified to measurable data primed for quick-fix, unbiased, algorithmic answers. While technology may have initially been adopted by police to respond to specific problems, it has changed the problems themselves, altered the array of potential solutions, and …

The Vanishing Voice: Juror Disenfranchisement In Capital Cases And The Erosion Of Constitutional Protections, Yacenda Hudson Sep 2026

The Vanishing Voice: Juror Disenfranchisement In Capital Cases And The Erosion Of Constitutional Protections, Yacenda Hudson

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

After years of battling to have an uninfringed right to vote and participate on a jury panel, the removal of the unanimity requirement for a death penalty recommendation threatens to disenfranchise minority jurors, thereby implicating the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments. The death penalty is one of the most controversial issues in our society, and it has evolved over time. Due to a paradigm shift in beliefs, the death penalty’s constitutionality was challenged under the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments. Pivotal legal decisions, such as Furman v. Georgia and Hurst v. Florida, required states to institute changes to the death penalty. …

R&D Consortia In Competitive Supply Chains, Pascale Crama, Gaoyan Lu, Yi Xu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

R&D consortia, which coordinate R&D activities of their member firms, have been successful in many industries. We study a model with two competing supply chains each consisting of a manufacturer and a supplier. The manufacturers compete in the final product market, and can conduct R&D to reduce unit product costs of their final products. The R&D can be done in three different ways: by the two manufacturers independently, by them jointly in a horizontal R&D consortium, or by the supplier and the manufacturer jointly in each supply chain in two vertical R&D consortia. We find that as compared to independent …

Despite effective antiretroviral therapy (ART), people living with HIV (PLWH) remain at a higher risk of developing AIDS-related cancers. The factors attributed to this increased risk are multifactorial, including long-term ART use, prolonged exposure to soluble HIV proteins, and drugs of abuse. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a common driver of many malignancies, such as Burkitt’s lymphoma and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. While ART effectively suppresses HIV replication, it is not curative and prolonged use imposes health risks, including an accelerated course of cancers. Herein, we investigated the effects of various factors that can impact EBV latency in PLWH in cooperation with cellular …
