Dodenhoff, Neha Gupta, Lauren Craig, Marjorie L. Pate, Sarah D. Petrusnek, Nianlan Yang, Kimberly Smith, Allison Wooley, Yesie Yoon, Tapan Mehta, Leslie W. Hayes
Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care
Introduction: Delirium screening and identification in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) can be a diagnostic challenge. Primarily, the burden of screening falls on the bedside nurses, who are juggling countless tasks throughout their shift. The nursing staff was concerned that the existing screen, Cornell Assessment for Pediatric Delirium (CAPD), detracted from workflow. The Pediatric Delirium Scale (PEDS) was developed to accurately identify delirium in children of all developmental abilities and improve nursing workflow. This is a single-center, double-blinded, preliminary exploratory validation study that assesses the feasibility and accessibility of PEDS. This study was performed in a busy 24-bed quaternary …

Barriers To Adherence Of Early Mobilization Protocols In The Picu, Katherine M. Rodriguez, Taemyn Hollis, Valerie Kalinowski, Marylouise Wilkerson
Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care
Objective: Children who survive critical illness suffer many sequelae of prolonged hospitalization. National guidelines recommend pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) employ ICU care bundles to combat acquired delirium, pain, and weakness. While use of early mobility (EM) protocols has increased in PICUs, there remain challenges with adherence. Here we describe the results of a cross-sectional survey conducted at a single center tertiary PICU. The aim of this study is to better understand perceived barriers to EM in the PICU. We hypothesized that providers would be most concerned about safety of EM. Methods: A total of 94 PICU providers were included …

Iatrogenic Withdrawal Syndrome In Critically Ill Neonates: A Review Of Mechanisms, Assessment, Management, And Prevention, Isaque Nilton Dos Santos, Carolina Teixeira Goulart Peano, Ericks Sousa Soares, Helena Iturvides Cimarosti
Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care
Considering that neonatal pain is a relevant matter given its implications and consequences, many neonates, particularly those undergoing critical care, are subjected to analgo-sedation therapies, which commonly include treatment with opioids and benzodiazepines. These drugs, however, can induce tolerance and dependency, leading to the development of the so-called iatrogenic withdrawal syndrome (IWS) which is observed following discontinuation of these therapeutic agents particularly when utilized for a prolonged period of time (>= 5 days). IWS consists of signs and symptoms manifested especially in young children, such as term and premature newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), who are …

Regenerative Tourism And Transformative Destination Management: Developing A Framework Through The Case Of County Offaly, Yi (Alex) Yu, Mary Loonam Dr, Tony Johnston
Irish Journal of Tourism, Hospitality, Leisure and Event Research
The increasing urgency of climate change, biodiversity loss, and socio-economic transition has generated growing interest in tourism approaches that move beyond sustainability towards more transformative forms of development. While sustainable tourism has become the dominant paradigm within tourism planning and policy, it has been criticised for its emphasis on impact mitigation and its limited capacity to address systemic challenges. In response, regenerative tourism has emerged as an alternative framework that seeks to restore and enhance ecological, social, cultural, and economic systems through tourism activity.
This paper explores the potential of regenerative tourism as a framework for transformative destination management. Drawing …

When The Protocol Decides - Replay-Ready Infrastructure For Programmable Financial Institutions, Deepak Aggarwal
Defensive Publications Series
The rails are becoming intelligent. The governance frameworks developed to manage them remain as before. In the ASEAN+3 group, the financial infrastructure stack is undergoing redesign, starting from the message layer upward. Project Nexus connects national payment systems at near-real-time speeds. ISO 20022 incorporates compliance controls within the financial messages themselves. Project Agorá brings programmable settlement to a distributed ledger. AI is parsing liquidity, fraud, identity, and credit information even before humans can see the information.
This paper presents a simple yet powerful illustration of its main thesis: One decision, three jurisdictions, seven seconds. Decision chains start unfolding themselves at …

The Irrecoverable Institution - Why Replayability - Not Explainability - Is The Governance Standard For Agentic Banking, Deepak Aggarwal
Defensive Publications Series
Financial institutions have accelerated the deployment of Agentic AI systems. These systems have the capabilities to make decisions and are operating faster than any governance mechanism can respond. However, when such decisions go wrong, the biggest cost incurred is not due to their very first mistake, but because the financial institution lacks the capability of replaying and governing the decision path until other costs increase significantly.
The objective of this paper is to propose Decision Replay as the base governance framework for agentic financial institutions, which would be the capability to replay and govern decisions at any moment, via any …

The Impact Of Art-Integrated Instruction On Handwriting Development Among Primary School Students, Maryam Ahmed Alomair
Scientific Journal of King Faisal University: Humanities and Management Sciences
This study explores the impact of art-integrated instruction on handwriting development among primary school students compared to the traditional approach. The study perceives handwriting as a form of visual and creative expression with the capacity to foster greater motivation and motor control, positioning it as more than simply a handwriting skill. A quantitative quasi-experimental pretest–post-test design was used for the study, comprising 39 primary school students divided into two main groups, namely, the experimental group (n = 20) and the control group (n = 19). For a period of four weeks, the control group continued to receive the traditional introduction …

Domain-Specific And Sex-Dependent Behavioral Alterations In The Btbr Mouse Model Of Autism, Jacob Jackson, Conlan Houston, Miles Cornils, Ethan Plummer, Chunxiu Yu
Michigan Tech Publications
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication deficits and restricted, repetitive behaviors, often accompanied by motor, cognitive, and anxiety-related alterations. Although ASD is diagnosed more frequently in males than females, females remain underrepresented in preclinical studies, limiting understanding of sex-dependent phenotypes. The BTBR T+ Itpr3tf/J (BTBR) mouse strain is a widely used animal model of ASD, yet its sex-specific behavioral profiles across functional domains remain incompletely characterized. Here, we conducted a systematic, multi-domain behavioral assessment in male and female BTBR mice and wild-type (WT) controls, examining action control, motor learning, social behavior, …

The Influence Of Entrepreneurial Marketing On Sustainable Competitive Advantage In Tanzanian Smes: A Lower-Order Dimensional Analysis, Omari Khalifa Mbura
The Influence Of Entrepreneurial Marketing On Sustainable Competitive Advantage In Tanzanian Smes: A Lower-Order Dimensional Analysis, Omari Khalifa Mbura
Business Management Review
Although entrepreneurial marketing is increasingly recognised as multidimensional, limited understanding remains of whether its individual behaviours exhibit equivalent relationships with competitive advantage, particularly when behaviours associated with the same broad dynamic-capability process are considered separately. This study examines the associations between five lower-order dimensions of entrepreneurial marketing (EM)—proactiveness, innovativeness, resource leveraging, customer intensity and value creation—and sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) among food-processing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Guided by Dynamic Capability Theory (DCT), cross-sectional survey data from 255 SMEs were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) in the SEMinR package in R. …
A Study On Police Budgets And Impact On Public Safety, Vera Thompson
A Study On Police Budgets And Impact On Public Safety, Vera Thompson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Law enforcement agencies face ongoing organizational and resource challenges, yet there is limited research on how changes in police funding relate to crime rates and violent crime. There has been increased public awareness concerning police related encounters with civilians, and this has intensified debates about reducing law enforcement budgets. Current literature indicates that although police funding, staffing, and community trust are closely associated with public safety outcomes, empirical evidence on the relationship between police budget reductions and changes in violent crime and overall crime rates remains limited and insufficient to support definitive policy conclusions. The purpose of this quantitative study …

Nurses' Perceptions On Emotional Exhaustion, Hannah Espera
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem that was addressed through this study is that U.S. nurses experience high levels of emotional exhaustion (EE) in their role as professional caregivers, adult learners, and educators. Grounded in Maslach's burnout theory, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore U.S. nurses’ perceptions of EE as professional caregivers, adult learners, and educators. For this basic qualitative design, semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 nurses licensed in the United States who were working in direct patient care roles, across multiple specialties, and with various levels of experience and licensure. Through in vivo and pattern coding, the following findings …
My Love Story With Hifs In The Disc: A Journey To The Humboldt Research Award, Makarand V. Risbud
My Love Story With Hifs In The Disc: A Journey To The Humboldt Research Award, Makarand V. Risbud
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers
The intervertebral disc is a prime example of tissue adaptation to metabolic and mechanical extremes. As the largest avascular organ in the human body, the disc and the central nucleus pulposus (NP) endure constant compressive loading while sustaining a hypoxic, relatively acidic, and hyperosmotic microenvironment that would be inhospitable to most cell types. Over the past two decades, work from my laboratory has revealed extraordinary details of this type of adaptation, that hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), particularly HIF-1α, serve as master regulators of NP cell survival, metabolism, and matrix homeostasis. This review chronicles the scientific and personal journey that began with …

Motivating Second-Order Differential Equation Models Beyond The Spring–Mass System, Katherine E. Rutherford, John C. Borger
Motivating Second-Order Differential Equation Models Beyond The Spring–Mass System, Katherine E. Rutherford, John C. Borger
CODEE Journal
Students in introductory differential equations courses often learn to associate specific equation types with familiar physical systems. While this approach supports procedural fluency, it can inhibit transfer learning: students recognize familiar forms rather than construct models from first principles. This paper presents a modeling-first instructional approach designed to help students recognize the shared structure of second-order differential equations across diverse contexts. Students derive governing equations from fundamental physical laws for multiple systems, including an Inductor, Resistor, and Capacitor (LRC) electrical circuit, a simple pendulum, and viscous pipe flow. Through guided comparison, students identify common components such as inertia, damping, restoring …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty publications
We report the first observations of a long-duration very-high-energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) flare from BL Lacertae (VER J2202+422), taken with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS). On 2022 October 15, the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) detected elevated GeV activity originating from this blazar. This triggered a multiwavelength campaign, which includes observations from VERITAS, Swift, NuSTAR, and select optical and radio observatories. VERITAS observed the source for a total of ∼9.8 hr between 2022 September 1 and 2022 December 1. An analysis of these data yields a ∼28σ detection of the source. While previously observed VHE …

Level Of Stroke Center Designation And The Association With Hcahps Nurse Communication Scores And Hcahps Discharge Instruction Scores In North Carolina Hospitals In 2023, Donna Lee Frederick
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Strokes are costly and the leading cause of disability and a leading cause of death in the United States. Stroke management has improved through a partnership between The Joint Commission and The American Heart Association, which established stroke care center certifications for hospitals nationwide. Despite this progress, North Carolina (NC) remains within the Stroke Belt due to the high prevalence of stroke there. In some areas of NC, the stroke mortality rate is 40% higher than the national average. Guided by the Donabedian model, this quantitative correlational study investigated the association between stroke center designation levels and the Hospital Consumer …
