A Systematic Review Of Alkali-Treated Polylactic Acid Biocomposites Relevant To Pineapple Leaf And Water Hyacinth Hybrid Design, Muhammad Rizky Adrianto Subandi, Tri Hartutuk Ningsih, Hanna Zakiyya
Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)
The increasing demand for sustainable materials has accelerated the development of biodegradable polymer composites. Polylactic acid (PLA)-based natural fiber composites have attracted significant attention due to their renewable characteristics; however, their performance remains limited by weak fiber–matrix compatibility, moisture sensitivity, and inconsistent interfacial behavior. Alkali treatment has been widely applied to modify lignocellulosic fibers by removing non-cellulosic components and improving surface characteristics, although its effectiveness remains dependent on treatment conditions and fiber properties. This systematic review evaluates the influence of alkali treatment on PLA-based natural fiber composites and assesses the available evidence supporting future pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) and water …

Caribou Migration And Non-Local Hunting In Northwest Alaska: A Gis Analysis Of Hunting Activity And Its Relationship With Caribou Migration Corridors, Brittney L. Jiménezszabo
Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
Indigenous Alaskans rely on subsistence hunting for food, with Barren-ground caribou making up approximately 27% of their diet. It is believed by subsistence hunters that non-local hunting is forcing a change in caribou migration behavior. This study examined non-local harvesting records from 2013 – 2025 in the northwest and interior Game Management Units (GMU) and Alaksa’s Western Arctic Caribou Herd (WACH) migration range data to answer the question, is there a spatial relationship between non-local harvests and WACH migration behavior. Mixed methods included spatial autocorrelation and local statistics. Findings led to the rejection of the null hypothesis which will help …

Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera are often credited as having played a crucial role in establishing a Mexican avant-garde. According to the Denver Art Museum’s statement for the exhibition Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism, their body of work often incorporated portrayals of mexicanidad, an identity born of Mexico’s ancient cultures and its colonial past that projected a visionary future. The use of mexicanidad imagery started with the efforts to create a new national art, following the Mexican revolution, when the country used public and socially effective art to communicate new ideals of identity. Through the analysis of …

Gas-fed electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) to multicarbon products is fundamentally constrained by mass-transport limitations that suppress selectivity and stability at industrially relevant current densities. Here, we demonstrate that these bottlenecks can be overcome by engineering a porous aerophilic polymer microenvironment around a simple CuxO electrocatalyst without altering the intrinsic catalyst. By systematically replacing conventional PFSA ionomers with mixed aerophilic binders and applying a mild thermal treatment, we construct mechanically stabilized, gas-accessible overlayers that regulate the local gas-liquid microenvironment balance at the three-phase boundary (TPB). This approach drives a dramatic enhancement in ethylene production, increasing the partial current density from 135 …

Peakon Solutions And Analytical Properties For The Camassa–Holm-Type Equations With Quadratic Nonlinearities, Yonghong Chen, Zhijun Qiao, Mingxuan Zhu
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper, we derive the multi-peakon dynamical system of a class of Camassa-Holm-type equations with quadratic nonlinearities. We also consider the analytical properties for the Cauchy problem. Firstly, we establish local well-posedness of solutions in Besov spaces and then provide the blow-up criteria. Subsequently, we impose appropriate sufficient conditions on the initial data to guarantee that the corresponding solution either exists globally or blows up in a finite time. Finally, we prove the ill-posedness in the Besov space B2,∞3/2 by utilizing the non-traveling wave solutions.

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Reverse electrodialysis (RED) offers a promising route to harvest osmotic energy from salinity gradients, yet practical implementation is hindered by the lack of scalable, high-performance ion-selective membranes that combine efficient ion transport with mechanical robustness and environmental sustainability. Here, we report a mixed matrix membrane composed of polyethersulfone (PES), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and lithium titanium oxide (Li₂TiO₃, LTO) that addresses these challenges through biomimetic ion transport channels. The strategic integration of LTO nanoparticles introduces ion-exchange sites and oxygen-rich PES ether linkages to create preferential cation transport pathways that mimic biological ion channels. This mixed matrix design delivers over three-fold cation conduction, …

Membrane chromatography offers a compelling alternative to packed-bed resins for viral vector purification, as its open porosity and convective mass transport eliminate diffusive mass transfer limitations, enabling processing at substantially shorter residence times. Yet, the translation of affinity ligands from resins to membranes is challenged by the low density of reactive groups, which constrains functional ligand loading and limits binding capacity. Seeking to overcome this limitation, this study presents a method for functionalizing cellulose membranes with peptide affinity ligands and demonstrates its application to the purification of adenovirus serotype 5 (AdV5), VSV-G and Cocal pseudotyped lentiviral vectors (LVVs), and adeno-associated …

Thermal Performance Analysis And Heat Transfer Characteristics Of A Solar Powered Paddy Dryer Using A Flat Plate Solar Collector, Peter Sahupala, Daniel Parenden
Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)
Freshly harvested paddy holds much water (23.00% wet basis in this study) and spoils quickly without prompt drying. Open sun drying depends on the weather and heats the grain unevenly. This study tested an indirect solar paddy dryer with a 0.60 m² flat plate collector, a 10 kg capacity, and natural convection airflow in Merauke, South Papua. Six thermocouples (collector, drying chamber, and chimney), a pyranometer, and a moisture meter recorded data every 15 minutes at drying temperatures of 40°C, 50°C, and 60°C. The data gave useful heat energy, collector thermal efficiency, and drying rate. Useful heat energy ranged from …

Beyond The Room Arrangement: Using The Environment As A Responsive Teaching Tool, Lydia J. Bingam, Carrie L. Ota
Spark! Innovations in Early Childhood Education: A Research-to-Practice Journal for Educators
This article explores the classroom environment as a "third teacher," arguing that intentional design should extend beyond simple furniture organization to actively support children's relationships, curiosity, and learning. It emphasizes a responsive approach in which teachers move away from a one-and-done, adult-centered layout toward environments that evolve based on observations of children's emerging interests and needs. This piece offers actionable insights for low-barrier environmental adaptation, emphasizing that the most effective learning spaces are never truly "finished" but are subject to ongoing, intentional revision to better meet the needs of the children they serve.

The Material Life Of Visual-Textual Pairs, Marzieh Mosavarzadeh, Ken Morimoto, Rita L. Irwin
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This visual essay follows the material lives of visual-textual pairs within a collaborative a/r/tographic inquiry, attending to how their changing forms invite relations we could not anticipate. Beginning as a digital exchange of photographs and texts between two collaborators, the inquiry expanded to include a third collaborator and later took the form of hinged, foldable cards shared at a conference round-table. Through gestures of lifting, revealing, passing, and (re)arranging, the pairs became participants in a collective inquiry, opening possibilities beyond their creators’ intentions. We wonder what becomes of inquiry when the gestures through which we share the work begin to …

This visual essay examines how an unused classroom whiteboard evolved into a student-driven site of relational art and community building. Initially left blank, the whiteboard became a shared drawing space as students began to doodle informally, returning regularly to contribute and interact. Over time, these collective drawing practices fostered friendships, cross-grade connections, and a sense of belonging grounded in shared pop culture interests and creative play. Drawing on theories of relational aesthetics (Bourriaud, 2002), creative ecosystems (Harris, 2021), and connected learning (Ito et al., 2019), the whiteboard functioned as a dynamic social space shaped by student agency rather than teacher …
Metaphoring Visual Metaphors For Visual Art Research, Jeff Horwat
Metaphoring Visual Metaphors For Visual Art Research, Jeff Horwat
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
In Art Practice as Research, Graeme Sullivan (2005) advances a seminal argument for art making as a rigorous mode of inquiry capable of generating knowledge comparable to that produced within positivist traditions. He conceptualizes visual art research through a complex framework. To render this model usable, Sullivan introduces a braided metaphor that operationalizes the framework while implicitly demonstrating the generative capacity of visual metaphors to reshape theoretical constructs themselves. Building on this premise, this visual essay approaches Sullivan’s framework not as a fixed schema but as an open invitation for methodological experimentation.
Through a process of metaphoring—the conceptual melding …
The Humidity Of Living: Walking, Permeability, And Care As Embodied Research Practice, Lyndsay Mckay
The Humidity Of Living: Walking, Permeability, And Care As Embodied Research Practice, Lyndsay Mckay
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This visual-textual essay traces walking as an embodied research methodology situated at the intersection of autoethnography, material feminist theory, and practices of care. Drawing on nursing-informed sensorial attunement and site-responsive observation, the work follows a pedestrian route through urban and coastal landscapes to examine how bodies, infrastructures, atmospheres, and more-than-human matter co-produce perception.
