UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Advisors are Ambassadors
We can improve UM’s graduation rates by increasing our students’ levels of hope. (Snyder et al, 1999) found a significant positive correlation between student Hope Scale scores and graduation rates. In this study, about 56% of students with high hope graduated on time, compared to only about 40% of those with low hope (Snyder et al, 1999, p. 824). They further found that through consistent interaction with others, hope could be either increased or decreased. Snyder’s (2002) Hope Theory attributes hope to a combination of agency- a person’s willpower and confidence in their ability to accomplish …

The research investigates how the curriculum, combined with targeted professional development (PD), supports teachers in delivering high-quality engineering instruction. Through a mixed methods approach, including surveys, interviews, focus groups, and classroom observations, data revealed significant improvements in teacher self-efficacy, particularly in areas such as scaffolding, differentiation, and accessibility. Teachers reported increased confidence in their ability to implement engineering lessons and foster engineering mindsets in their …
Influence Of Digital Out-Of-Home Advertising On Intention To Purchase Green Products, Michael Humbani
Influence Of Digital Out-Of-Home Advertising On Intention To Purchase Green Products, Michael Humbani
The African Journal of Information Systems
This study investigates the impact of digital outdoor (out-of-home) advertising on environmental product knowledge and environmental concerns, aiming to promote green purchase intentions. The investigation is grounded in the Stimulus-Organism-Response model. Data were collected through a self-administered online questionnaire completed by 274 adult consumers. Using structural equation modelling, the findings indicate that informativeness, credibility and incentives have a positive effect on environmental product knowledge. Of these, only informativeness and credibility were significant predictors of environmental concern. Furthermore, environmental product knowledge was found to significantly influence green purchase intention, but environmental concern had no significant influence. From a theoretical perspective, this …

Legacies Worth Considering: (Re)Examining The Assumptions Behind Denial Strategies, Samuel Zilincik
Legacies Worth Considering: (Re)Examining The Assumptions Behind Denial Strategies, Samuel Zilincik
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
Contemporary analyses of denial strategies risk conceptual confusion because they neglect the legacies of two distinct traditions: coercion versus control. This article explores the two traditions’ legacies from a broader perspective. It shows how neglecting those legacies contributes to conceptual confusion concerning operational conduct and strategic affairs in the South China Sea. The article facilitates smoother communication between and among civilians and military members involved in operational planning, which is essential if the United States and its allies want to combine military and nonmilitary instruments in future operations.

Understanding Red Nichols' Career Through Biographical Study Of His Early Life From 1905-1927, Carter Glass
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines Utah-born hot jazz cornetist Ernest “Red” Nichols’ early life through a biographical lens. Using resources that include the University of Utah Historical Newspaper Database, the thesis provides details about Nichols’ childhood as a performer, and as the son of Utah music professor and clarinetist Ernest W. Nichols. These details include information on tours and performances Red and his siblings performed across the state of Utah. Additionally, the thesis argues that the music Nichols played throughout his childhood, including on his tours, was highly influential on the style of solo playing Nichols used in his early recording career. …

Approaching The Military As A Profession Through The Clausewitzian Trinity, Adam T. Biggs
Approaching The Military As A Profession Through The Clausewitzian Trinity, Adam T. Biggs
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
The Clausewitzian trinity (people, government, and military—or passion, reason, and chance) can enhance existing scholarship and discussions about military professionalism by emphasizing the fundamental purpose of military forces. Specifically, managing chance incorporates elements of reducing uncertainty and applying creativity as individuals develop coup d’oeil. Junior personnel manage chance by reducing cognitive load while enhancing cognitive skills needed to quickly assess battlefield conditions as they progress to becoming senior leaders. This article contrasts these ideas against the various roles assigned to civil-military forces in the Clausewitzian trinity to emphasize professionalism in developing military leaders.

Critical Thinking And Academic Writing In The Age Of Generative Ai: A Call To Lis Educators And Librarians, Sandra Hirsh
Critical Thinking And Academic Writing In The Age Of Generative Ai: A Call To Lis Educators And Librarians, Sandra Hirsh
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is reshaping academic writing, sparking both enthusiasm and anxiety across higher education. Using GenAI tools to summarize literature, suggest outlines, and draft text is becoming more commonplace, but it also raises important questions in today’s academic writing: Who is the author when GenAI is involved? What counts as original work? What does learning look like when writing is generated and modified by machines? These questions are closely tied to long-standing concerns in library and information science (LIS), such as information literacy, transparency, authenticity, authorship, and ethics. These further prompt us to ask a larger question: What …

Introduction: Uterine rupture at previable gestational ages is almost always treated with evacuation of the pregnancy, followed by uterine repair or hysterectomy. Case Presentation: A 40-year-old woman with one prior cesarean section presented at 22 weeks of gestation with an acute abdomen. Imaging noted hemoperitoneum with areas of bulging in the anterior uterine wall. Laparoscopy converted to a laparotomy through a midline incision, noted an actively bleeding 2 cm area of uterine rupture with protruding placental tissue. The uterine rupture was surgically closed with sutures. The patient was kept in the hospital for the remainder of her pregnancy. At 32 …
Strategic Theory And Clausewitz’S Trinitarian Test, Lukas Milevski
Strategic Theory And Clausewitz’S Trinitarian Test, Lukas Milevski
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
Carl von Clausewitz’s trinity represents a qualitative test for strategy in both theory and practice. With the trinity, Clausewitz transforms competing influences into a mark of theoretical quality. Synthesizing several translations of Clausewitz’s On War and interpretations by experts such as Hew Strachan, Antulio J. Echevarria II, and Frank G. Hoffman, this article suggests that Clausewitz believed that good theory encompasses and accounts for all fundamental forces of war, whereas bad theory emphasizes the extremes of one force. The trinity compels mandatory considerations for students of theory, war planners, and practitioners.
Successful Large-Scale Combat Operations Require Artificially Intelligent Breaching Munitions, Michael P. Carvelli
Successful Large-Scale Combat Operations Require Artificially Intelligent Breaching Munitions, Michael P. Carvelli
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
The US Army must invest in artificial intelligence–enabled breaching munitions to succeed in large-scale combat operations. This article combines existing technologies to propose a new capability the Army does not currently possess. It lays out the current state of breaching materiel, identifies additional technology available, and proposes combining multiple pieces of existing technology to create improved breaching munitions for the Army’s use. This new capability will require practitioners and policymakers to enable the creation of artificial intelligence systems through acquisition and tactical experimentation.
Risk Decision Making And Intertemporal Choice: Lessons From The Taiwan Strait, Rachel Downing
Risk Decision Making And Intertemporal Choice: Lessons From The Taiwan Strait, Rachel Downing
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This article argues that domestic and political factors may incentivize US presidents to use risky military options to resolve crises quickly, though high costs or threats to long-term vital interests can overcome leaders’ natural tendencies to focus on the present. Recently declassified documents from President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s administration allow a detailed examination of how US leaders balanced risks over time during the First and Second Taiwan Strait Crises. The findings inform policy recommendations to enhance military planning and enable military advisers to communicate long-term risks more effectively to political leaders.

Spezialpropaganda: The East German Military’S Covert Information-Warfare Program, Joe Cheravitch
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This article details the East German military’s extensive, innovative covert-propaganda program, which was designed to influence West German attitudes for almost two decades during the Cold War. Unlike existing scholarship that primarily addresses intelligence-led disinformation, this study exclusively analyzes military-led information warfare. The article uses previously classified East German military records to examine capabilities and tactics ranging from fake conscription notices to radio broadcasts. The findings offer contemporary US military planners and practitioners insight into the complexities of integrating information-warfare capabilities, measuring the effectiveness of propaganda, and understanding adversarial influence campaigns, with direct implications for current Joint Force planning and …
Imitating Us Doctrine Cost Europe Its Heavy Combat Power, Bence Nemeth
Imitating Us Doctrine Cost Europe Its Heavy Combat Power, Bence Nemeth
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This article argues that Europe’s loss of heavy combat power is primarily the result of doctrinal shifts influenced by the United States, rather than underfunding alone. Unlike existing research that focuses on defense budgets or burden-sharing, this study isolates the opportunity costs of adopting US-based expeditionary and counterinsurgency doctrines. Using force structure data for Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom (1990–2022), it conducts a counterfactual analysis of lost tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and heavy artillery pieces. The article shows that Europe’s shortfalls are doctrinal as much as fiscal and highlights the relevance of maintaining balance in future doctrinal choices.

Building A Better Landscape For Research Dissemination, Scott Horowitz
Chemistry and Biochemistry: Faculty Scholarship
Let’s take a moment to think about where we’ve come to in scientific publishing. Once upon a time, journals and their publishers played an absolutely critical role in science’s growth and successes. Many journal publishers are for-profit enterprises, and they still want to make profits even if they no longer serve an important purpose. By controlling the information, they can still force people to pay for services that are obsolete and manipulate the system in ways that stymie progress to maintain their market. Open access did not have the power to change this. Altogether, things are in bad shape. I …

How can SCELC librarians make user-centered decisions around emerging technologies like GenAI, when user research is commonly dismissed as too resource intensive to be useful to libraries? We are researchers at two SCELC affiliate institutions whose commitment to equity and justice-oriented technology librarianship has led us to confront this question. We pursue Slow, collaborative research including user studies because we believe that grounding library technology in the needs and lived experience of students and university employees strengthens the connections with colleagues and library users that we need to advocate for technology that realizes our libraries' values. Exploring The Perceptions Of Religious Trauma Among Former Members Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Who Identify As A Sexual Minority, Samuel Clemens
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative study explored the perceived experiences of religious trauma among formerly active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) who identify as sexual minorities. Religious trauma, characterized by psychological, emotional, and social harm, arises from interactions with religious institutions and teachings. For sexual minorities within the LDS Church, strict adherence to heteronormative principles and rigid gender roles often results in identity suppression, emotional distress, and social isolation. Utilizing a generic qualitative inquiry approach, this study investigated how participants interpret their experiences of religious trauma and its perceived effects on their lives. Twelve participants aged 20–74 …

Generative Ai In Digital Engagement: A Quasi-Experimental Study Of Tourist Sentiment, Waqas Ali, Dulekha Kasturiratne, Irfan Ameer, Shikhar Bhaskar
Plymouth Business School
This study examines whether generative AI can enhance tourist sentiment in online reviews by acting as a consistent and scalable form of digital engagement. Using a quasi-experimental Difference-in-Differences design, we analysed 11,393 reviews collected for six months from five Indian restaurants in a UK tourist city, where one restaurant adopted ChatGPT-generated responses and four served as controls. Results show that AI mediated responses produced a significant improvement in tourist sentiment, with similar effects across both social (Google, Facebook) and delivery-oriented platforms (Deliveroo, Just Eat, Uber Eats). Response features such as tone, personalisation, and length had limited additional influence, indicating that …
