Defying The Conventional: Musical Performance, Embodied Cognition, And The Reconfiguration Of Institutional Discourse, Dillon Parmer
Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal
This essay confronts the dialectic between theory and practice through a comparison of an idea basic to how we understand music (the notion that pitch moves up and down in vertical space) with how pitch is thought of in actual music-making. The comparison leads to both a new conceptual model for thinking about pitch, what might be called Pitch Horizontality, as well as a proposal for how to bring institutional discourse about music into sync, not with how scholars in other disciplines think about their subject matter, but with the thinking that goes on in contexts of real-world artistic production.

Ten Portraits In Sound Of Beethoven’S Leonore, Stephen Hastings
Ten Portraits In Sound Of Beethoven’S Leonore, Stephen Hastings
Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal
The most technically difficult opera arias are not always the most profound in meaning, but in Leonore’s solo from the first act of Fidelio the vocal hurdles closely mirror the moral and psychological challenges of Beethoven’s heroine. This essay offers unprecedented in-depth analysis of six audio recordings and four video recordings of this scene, covering a ninety-nine-year timespan. These ten portraits in sound reveal how some of the most talented singers of their respective eras measured up to the challenges of one of the greatest of all operatic scores, achieving a highly individual expressive merging of words, music, and—in some …

A “Free Artist Of Color” In Late-Eighteenth-Century Saint-Domingue: The Life And Times Of Minette, Bernard Camier
A “Free Artist Of Color” In Late-Eighteenth-Century Saint-Domingue: The Life And Times Of Minette, Bernard Camier
Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal
This article sets forth, for the first time in detail, the life and career of Minette, who was the main female opera singer in Port-au-Prince at the end of the eighteenth century. The city was the capital of the thriving and wealthy French colony of Saint-Domingue (which, upon gaining independence in 1804, took the name Haïti). Theatrical activity in Port-au-Prince was comparable to what one could find in any large provincial city, and the success that Minette gained was all the more remarkable for her being categorized as colored (mestive). The details of Minette’s origins, life, and career …

Kinky Friedman And His Influence On Jewish American Music, Mara W. Cohen Ioannides
Kinky Friedman And His Influence On Jewish American Music, Mara W. Cohen Ioannides
Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal
Kinky Friedman changed American pop music and Country and Western music’s presentation of Jews. Because of his satirical and counter culture lyrics, the idea that Jews could be Jewish on stage without having to point out they were Jewish was a part of the stage persona that Friedman adopted. His biting lyrics pointed to the derogatory ways that Americans view the other and what he saw as hypocritical Christian values. Additionally, he is set the stage to address painful issues in music, writing and performing the first popular song about the Holocaust. Dubbed the founder of “Redneck Rock” or a …
Through Peaks And Troughs: Visualising The Rhythmic Sentiment Of The Lord Of The Rings, Dimitra Vogatza
Through Peaks And Troughs: Visualising The Rhythmic Sentiment Of The Lord Of The Rings, Dimitra Vogatza
Journal of Tolkien Research
This study offers a fresh look at the widely discussed binaries in The Lord of the Rings and examines whether their structure can be visualised. Building on previous research that identifies Tolkien’s prose as structured by emotional and moral shifts, this study makes visible how these changes happen throughout the trilogy, through quantitative means. A transformer-based language model was employed and fine-tuned on a Tolkien-specific corpus to align with Tolkien's semantics and symbolism. The primary methodology for highlighting these binaries is a Tolkien-specific sentiment analysis. A semi-guided approach, selecting positive and negative sentences from the work as contextual reference points, …

Understanding The Coach Learning Environment In Formal, Field-Based Settings: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Jody L. Langdon, Shayla Snow
Journal of Coach Development
Grounded in self-determination theory (SDT), the purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to evaluate the psychometric properties of SDT-related measures in a sample of coach learners, and 2) to examine the relationships between need satisfaction and frustration, coach motivation, and engagement in training sessions.. A total of 796 coaches participated in the study, completing surveys measuring basic psychological need satisfaction and frustration, coaching motivation, and engagement. Aside from confirming the validity and reliability of measures for use among coach learners, findings indicate that satisfaction of basic psychological needs positively correlated with intrinsic motivation and engagement, while frustration of these …

Despite the implementation of national programs like the National Safe Motherhood Program (NSMP) that aim to improve maternal health outcomes, many women in the Philippines continue to face barriers in accessing quality maternal healthcare (MHC) due to systemic, societal, and psychological factors. Ongoing issues such as poor service delivery, limited health education, and the lack of autonomy in decision-making—particularly in underserved communities—discourage women from seeking care. This study investigates these barriers and how they shape the overall well-being of mothers in Miriam College’s partnered community, Kaingin 1, using the Integrated People-Centered Health Services Framework (IPCHSF) as a lens. The role of websites in communicating government services and updates to constituents is paramount since they can serve as dependable hubs of critical information. However, since these are government websites, there may be political considerations behind their visual and textual content that need to be uncovered. Yet, there has been a dearth of studies, especially in the Philippine context, that scrutinized the sociopolitical forces that are at play in the production of these website contents. Hence, in this study, we attempted to continue seamlessly meshing the critical discourse analysis framework of Fairclough with a multimodal analytical model in dissecting the …

With the massive rise in popularity that social media has gained in recent years, platforms like TikTok have experienced exponential growth. The search interest for TikTok has increased by a staggering 227% in the past five years (Howarth, 2024). As TikTok’s short-form content dominates the digital space, product and restaurant reviews have become a staple on users’ “For You” pages. Despite this trend, there is limited research on how food influencers shape public perception through persuasive speech. This study addresses that gap by using thematic analysis to examine the rhetorical strategies employed by influencers in TikTok restaurant reviews. The research …

This study addresses environmental concerns related to improper waste disposal and seeks alternative sources of raw material additives for ceramics. The methods involved extracting HAp from Nile tilapia scales and mixing them into the porcelain tile mixture, including a negative control setup of 0% HAp, and experimental setups of 5% and 10% HAp. Tiles with 5% and 10% HAp demonstrated increased flexural strength (11.441 MPa and 11.446 …
