Assessing Teacher Candidates: A Multi-Dimensional Approach, Jill Branyon Mar 2026

Assessing Teacher Candidates: A Multi-Dimensional Approach, Jill Branyon

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

Assessing teacher candidates is complex and difficult. A multi-dimensional approach allows faculty the opportunity to use multiply assessments to determine the candidate's proficiencies of knowledge, skills, and dispositions. Utilizing a prolonged and intense approach to field experience, North Greenville University's College of Education faculty are able to produce multiply assessments that clearly define a teacher candidate's ability to affect k-12 learning. Among the strongest assessments used are the Assessment of Dispositions, the Field Experience Evaluation, The Teacher Work Sample, the Licensure Exams, and the ADEPT (Assisting, developing, and evaluating professional teaching criteria used in South Carolina to evaluate teachers) Portfolio …

Investigation Of Screening Instruments In K-5 Programs, Mary Steppling, Mihaela Sabo Sweeney

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

This study compared two speech and language screening instruments (The SpeechEase and the South Carolina Curriculum Screener) to determine which screening protocol was more accurate in identifying preschoolers at risk for academic delays in elementary school. Ninety-six children were administered both of the screenings and received either a Pass or Fail score. The screening results were compared with the students' academic performance as recorded on subsequent report cards. Statistics were performed to evaluate correlations between the students' screening results and their academic performance. Statistical measures showed that both screening instruments have moderate ability to predict academic outcomes in kindergarten children. …

The thirty LPI statements were divided among five behavioral areas: 1) Model the Way, 2) Inspire a Shared Vision, 3) Challenge the Process, 4) Enable Others to Act, and 5) Encourage the Heart. Principals rated their leadership behaviors slightly more positively than their …

Teacher Demographics And Student Achievement In High Poverty Schools: What Makes A Difference?, James Zachary Williams, Debra Smith Lee Mar 2026

Teacher Demographics And Student Achievement In High Poverty Schools: What Makes A Difference?, James Zachary Williams, Debra Smith Lee

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

With the implementation of the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act, teachers are expected to achieve "Highly Qualified" status. This designation requires full certification, a bachelor's degree, and subject competence. It is designed to identify teachers who have the knowledge and skills to positively impact student learning outcomes. However, national studies indicate a lack of "highly qualified" teachers in high poverty schools. Yet there are high poverty schools where students exhibit high academic achievement. This research looks at that issue and focuses on selected teacher demographics and student achievement in a sampling of high-achieving, high poverty and low-achieving, high poverty …

Adding Citizenship Preparation To A Classroom Organization Plan, Rebecca Stevens Mar 2026

Adding Citizenship Preparation To A Classroom Organization Plan, Rebecca Stevens

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

There are two areas of content in schools, academic and social. The academic content is driven by standards, the social content by public education's mission to prepare young people for citizenship. A dilemma for teachers is how to teach all that needs to be covered in class. "How can education for citizenship and democracy be added to an already overburdened school curriculum?" Education for democracy includes the acquisition of a body of knowledge, intellectual and participatory skills (National Assessment Governing Board, n.d.) and civic dispositions (Carnegie Corporation of New York & CIRCLE, 2003). This paper describes why and how this …

Perceptions Of Required Elementary Education Courses For Special Education Majors, Sharon Sanders, Paula Schubert Mar 2026

Perceptions Of Required Elementary Education Courses For Special Education Majors, Sharon Sanders, Paula Schubert

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

Approximately half of the students receiving special education services currently spend 80% of their time in the regular classroom, often with the special education teacher acting as a co-teacher. The use of inclusion to provide access to the general curriculum for these students challenges institutions of higher education to revisit the preparation of future teachers. In this article, results are presented from a survey administered to special education majors by two university instructors. The results of the survey indicated an apparent lack of understanding of the collaboration required between special education and general education teachers and the role of content …

Diverse Pathways In Teacher Preparation: South Carolina Technical To 4-Year College Teacher Certification Initiative, Stephen Thompson, Jane Zenger

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

Developing technical to 4-year college teacher certification pathways has the potential to help alleviate South Carolina teacher shortages, especially in rural and high poverty settings. This article describes one such partnership, Diverse Pathways in Teacher Preparation, and provides rationale for expanding similar partnerships across South Carolina. Recommendations for implementation are included, beginning with creation of course articulation agreements for education majors between institutions. In addition, this article describes other support systems needed such as specialized advisements, on-site mentoring, support for course development, and expansion of clinical field experiences for technical college students. To this point twenty-eight South Carolina institutions responded …

The Pedagogical Implications Of School Choice Initiatives In South Carolina, A. Scott Henderson Mar 2026

The Pedagogical Implications Of School Choice Initiatives In South Carolina, A. Scott Henderson

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

School choice theory (SCT) is an important component of contemporary discussions about educational reform. For the past several years, South Carolina lawmakers have attempted to enact legislation based on SCT principles. These attempts, albeit unsuccessful, illustrate recurring concerns and suggest a need for teacher preparation programs to address more fully the pedagogical implications of school choice initiatives.

Defying The Conventional: Musical Performance, Embodied Cognition, And The Reconfiguration Of Institutional Discourse, Dillon Parmer Mar 2026

Defying The Conventional: Musical Performance, Embodied Cognition, And The Reconfiguration Of Institutional Discourse, Dillon Parmer

Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal

This essay confronts the dialectic between theory and practice through a comparison of an idea basic to how we understand music (the notion that pitch moves up and down in vertical space) with how pitch is thought of in actual music-making. The comparison leads to both a new conceptual model for thinking about pitch, what might be called Pitch Horizontality, as well as a proposal for how to bring institutional discourse about music into sync, not with how scholars in other disciplines think about their subject matter, but with the thinking that goes on in contexts of real-world artistic production.

Ten Portraits In Sound Of Beethoven’S Leonore, Stephen Hastings Mar 2026

Ten Portraits In Sound Of Beethoven’S Leonore, Stephen Hastings

Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal

The most technically difficult opera arias are not always the most profound in meaning, but in Leonore’s solo from the first act of Fidelio the vocal hurdles closely mirror the moral and psychological challenges of Beethoven’s heroine. This essay offers unprecedented in-depth analysis of six audio recordings and four video recordings of this scene, covering a ninety-nine-year timespan. These ten portraits in sound reveal how some of the most talented singers of their respective eras measured up to the challenges of one of the greatest of all operatic scores, achieving a highly individual expressive merging of words, music, and—in some …

A “Free Artist Of Color” In Late-Eighteenth-Century Saint-Domingue: The Life And Times Of Minette, Bernard Camier Mar 2026

A “Free Artist Of Color” In Late-Eighteenth-Century Saint-Domingue: The Life And Times Of Minette, Bernard Camier

Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal

This article sets forth, for the first time in detail, the life and career of Minette, who was the main female opera singer in Port-au-Prince at the end of the eighteenth century. The city was the capital of the thriving and wealthy French colony of Saint-Domingue (which, upon gaining independence in 1804, took the name Haïti). Theatrical activity in Port-au-Prince was comparable to what one could find in any large provincial city, and the success that Minette gained was all the more remarkable for her being categorized as colored (mestive). The details of Minette’s origins, life, and career …

Kinky Friedman And His Influence On Jewish American Music, Mara W. Cohen Ioannides Mar 2026

Kinky Friedman And His Influence On Jewish American Music, Mara W. Cohen Ioannides

Music & Musical Performance: An International Journal

Kinky Friedman changed American pop music and Country and Western music’s presentation of Jews. Because of his satirical and counter culture lyrics, the idea that Jews could be Jewish on stage without having to point out they were Jewish was a part of the stage persona that Friedman adopted. His biting lyrics pointed to the derogatory ways that Americans view the other and what he saw as hypocritical Christian values. Additionally, he is set the stage to address painful issues in music, writing and performing the first popular song about the Holocaust. Dubbed the founder of “Redneck Rock” or a …

Through Peaks And Troughs: Visualising The Rhythmic Sentiment Of The Lord Of The Rings, Dimitra Vogatza Mar 2026

Through Peaks And Troughs: Visualising The Rhythmic Sentiment Of The Lord Of The Rings, Dimitra Vogatza

Journal of Tolkien Research

This study offers a fresh look at the widely discussed binaries in The Lord of the Rings and examines whether their structure can be visualised. Building on previous research that identifies Tolkien’s prose as structured by emotional and moral shifts, this study makes visible how these changes happen throughout the trilogy, through quantitative means. A transformer-based language model was employed and fine-tuned on a Tolkien-specific corpus to align with Tolkien's semantics and symbolism. The primary methodology for highlighting these binaries is a Tolkien-specific sentiment analysis. A semi-guided approach, selecting positive and negative sentences from the work as contextual reference points, …

Understanding The Coach Learning Environment In Formal, Field-Based Settings: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Jody L. Langdon, Shayla Snow Mar 2026

Understanding The Coach Learning Environment In Formal, Field-Based Settings: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Jody L. Langdon, Shayla Snow

Journal of Coach Development

Grounded in self-determination theory (SDT), the purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to evaluate the psychometric properties of SDT-related measures in a sample of coach learners, and 2) to examine the relationships between need satisfaction and frustration, coach motivation, and engagement in training sessions.. A total of 796 coaches participated in the study, completing surveys measuring basic psychological need satisfaction and frustration, coaching motivation, and engagement. Aside from confirming the validity and reliability of measures for use among coach learners, findings indicate that satisfaction of basic psychological needs positively correlated with intrinsic motivation and engagement, while frustration of these …

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress Conference Proceedings

Despite the implementation of national programs like the National Safe Motherhood Program (NSMP) that aim to improve maternal health outcomes, many women in the Philippines continue to face barriers in accessing quality maternal healthcare (MHC) due to systemic, societal, and psychological factors. Ongoing issues such as poor service delivery, limited health education, and the lack of autonomy in decision-making—particularly in underserved communities—discourage women from seeking care. This study investigates these barriers and how they shape the overall well-being of mothers in Miriam College’s partnered community, Kaingin 1, using the Integrated People-Centered Health Services Framework (IPCHSF) as a lens. Through an …

Uncovering Political Agendas: A Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis Of Philippine Government Agencies’ Websites, Charlaine G. Alodaga, Julia Cailean G. Dueñas, Giulia Renee Singson, Justine Gabrielle Lee Yu, Janeson Miranda

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress Conference Proceedings

The role of websites in communicating government services and updates to constituents is paramount since they can serve as dependable hubs of critical information. However, since these are government websites, there may be political considerations behind their visual and textual content that need to be uncovered. Yet, there has been a dearth of studies, especially in the Philippine context, that scrutinized the sociopolitical forces that are at play in the production of these website contents. Hence, in this study, we attempted to continue seamlessly meshing the critical discourse analysis framework of Fairclough with a multimodal analytical model in dissecting the …
