A Generative Ai Method For Minority Class Handling In Anomaly Detection With Drift And Explainability Analysis, Kelvin J. Mwiga, Mussa A. Dida, Ahmad Mohsin, Iqbal H. Sarker

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Artificial Intelligence, particularly machine learning (ML) algorithms, plays a crucial role in detecting cyberattacks, including anomalies and intrusions. However, machine learning models trained on imbalanced cybersecurity datasets often struggle to accurately detect minority data instances and potential threats, thereby weakening overall system security. Despite extensive research, a persistent challenge is the inadequate explanation for model predictions concerning minority data classes. This study aims to address these limitations by developing a generative AI-based approach to manage minority classes in anomaly detection, incorporating concept drift handling and explainability analysis. We introduce an over-sampling technique, CGGReaT, designed to enhance the presence of minority …

Cities And Climate Change, Matthias Roth, Enric Aguilar, Winston T. L. Chow May 2026

Cities And Climate Change, Matthias Roth, Enric Aguilar, Winston T. L. Chow

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

We are pleased to present this special virtual collection of articles, highlighting the multifaceted interactions between cities, local climates, and global anthropogenic climate change. Climate change and urbanisation are the two global megatrends that transform human life and, at the same time, directly impact each other. Urban areas have the highest density of human populations and experience altered atmospheric conditions due to anthropogenic modification of natural physical settings and extra emissions of air pollutants and trace gases. One of the most obvious examples of climate modification due to humans is the urban heat island (UHI). This phenomenon describes urban regions, …

Miserly Thinking: Understanding The Factors Shaping Public Support Towards Project Wolbachia In Singapore, Shirley S. Ho, Agnes S. F. Chuah, Fiona J. W. Goh, Nova Mengxia Huang, Mengxue Qu, Hye Kyung Kim, Sonny Rosenthal

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Project Wolbachia is a vector control method that releases male Wolbachia-infected Aedes mosquitoes to curb dengue transmission in Singapore. While research has primarily focused on its efficacy, few studies have examined public opinion. This study draws upon the cognitive miser model and scientific literacy model to examine the factors shaping public support for Project Wolbachia. A nationally representative door-to-door survey was conducted in Singapore (N = 1,000) using multi-stage stratified random sampling. Our findings revealed that while knowledge about Project Wolbachia explains public support, laypeople may often rely on cognitive shortcuts, such as value predispositions, media attention, and pre-existing perceptions, …

Public Pool Usage As Adaptation Against Urban Heat, Stefan Borsky, Eric Fesselmeyer May 2026

Public Pool Usage As Adaptation Against Urban Heat, Stefan Borsky, Eric Fesselmeyer

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This paper examines the relationship between urban heat and outdoor public pool usage. Using attendance data from all 53 outdoor public pools in New York City, we analyze nonlinear effects of heat on pool usage across socioeconomic contexts. Pool attendance rises sharply with heat, especially in low-income neighborhoods where alternative coping options are likely limited. We also find that public pools reduce heat-related emergency medical service calls. Our findings highlight the need for equitable investment in blue infrastructure to enhance urban climate resilience and demonstrate how this type of adaptive infrastructure can play a critical role in managing urban heat.

Walking The Thermal Landscape: Modeling Ecophysiological Responses Of Ecotherms To Marine Heatwaves, Andrew Robert Villeneuve May 2026

Walking The Thermal Landscape: Modeling Ecophysiological Responses Of Ecotherms To Marine Heatwaves, Andrew Robert Villeneuve

Doctoral Dissertations

Climate change is accelerating the frequency of extreme heat events in the world’s oceans. These heatwaves can pose critical challenges for marine organisms, especially ectotherm foundation species who have experienced increasingly frequent and severe mass mortality events (MMEs). Predicting when, where, and to what extent populations experience heat-induced mortality is a critical knowledge gap in our ability to anticipate, mitigate, and recover from catastrophic MMEs. Here, I test the application of physiological nonlinear thermal tolerance landscapes (TTLs) and dynamic tolerance algorithms to translate dynamic heatwave events into ectotherm mortality predictions. In chapter 2, I conducted a simulation exploration of how …

Dignity And The Free Press, Erin C. Carroll May 2026

Dignity And The Free Press, Erin C. Carroll

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

As American institutions wither and die, those who believe in their importance must reflect and rebuild. One institution worthy of sustained attention is the free press. Divorced from government by design, the press can benefit from efforts to reinvigorate and reinvent it in ways that institutions more directly under the federal government’s thumb cannot. To best undertake these efforts, we need a richer understanding of why a free press is vital. Articulating the values that underlie the need for this institution is necessary not only to build the most robust free press, but also to best exercise our freedoms as …

Functional Heterogeneity In Trophoblast Stem Cells Derived From Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Products Of Conception., Qi Fu, Keisuke Kozai, Xingrao Ke, Joe Varberg, Sheng Xia, Ashley S. Howard, Michael Lydic, Kristin Holoch, Courtney Marsh, Elin Grundberg, Kaela Varberg

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), defined as two or more consecutive miscarriages, affects 1-5% of couples attempting to conceive and most frequently occurs between 6 and 8 weeks of gestation, coinciding with critical stages of placental development. Despite this temporal association, placental contributions to RPL pathogenesis remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that trophoblast lineage development, including extravillous trophoblast (EVT) and syncytiotrophoblast (STB) differentiation, are disrupted in RPL. To test this hypothesis, we established and functionally characterized human trophoblast stem (TS) cell lines derived from products of conception (POC) obtained from consenting idiopathic RPL cases. Four TS cell lines were successfully derived …

OBJECTIVE: To determine if newborns receiving morphine or methadone as the primary pharmacologic treatment for neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) tolerate and receive fewer days of opioid using an accelerated wean protocol (15% decrements) compared with using a slower wean protocol (10% decrements).

STUDY DESIGN: Newborns ≥36 weeks of gestation receiving morphine or methadone for NOWS were enrolled in a pragmatic blinded, randomized multicenter trial. Newborns underwent protocol-driven weaning with decreasing opioid doses of either 15% or 10% decrements. Weaning was encouraged every 24 hours, and if signs of NOWS worsened, the preceding dose was resumed. To maintain blinding, the …

No Color Line In The Coal Mine: The Role Of Black Coal Miners In The Umwa Strikes Of 1893 And 1899 In Southeast Kansas, Brent Mcdowell May 2026

No Color Line In The Coal Mine: The Role Of Black Coal Miners In The Umwa Strikes Of 1893 And 1899 In Southeast Kansas, Brent Mcdowell

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

In 1890 the United Mine Workers of America was established as a national union for coal miners in the United States. One of the prominent founding principles of the UMWA was to not discriminate against coal miners wanting to join and participate in the union regardless of their race, or ethnicity. Throughout the first decade of its existence, the UMWA was tested several times by the actions of coal mine operators using Black coal miners as strikebreakers, and in some scenarios, the UMWA failed to uphold their own declarations of nondiscrimination. Twice, in 1893 and 1899 the coal miners of …

Increasing Accuracy Of Mapping Local Climatic Zones Using Building Height And Spectral Unmixing, Ian Douglas Stauffer May 2026

Increasing Accuracy Of Mapping Local Climatic Zones Using Building Height And Spectral Unmixing, Ian Douglas Stauffer

Masters Theses

Local climatic zone (LCZ) classifications are traditionally done using reflectance, population data, and often climatic data. The goal of this research is to utilize Google’s new “Open Buildings Temporal v1” building data set as well as “spectral unmixing”. With the objective of testing, assessing, and implementing this data set into the workflow of LCZ mapping. After testing the quality of the data against a validated LiDAR data set from the same year as a given “Open Buildings Temporal v1” band, I implemented it into the Random Forest machine learning process. Secondly, I justified the use of spectral unmixing as a …

Farming The Future: Urbanizing The Naturhus For Small Scale Food Cultivation, Madysen Brooke Rath May 2026

Farming The Future: Urbanizing The Naturhus For Small Scale Food Cultivation, Madysen Brooke Rath

Architecture Theses

Modern urban centers face the pressures of rapidly rising populations and food insecurity, leaving a landscape of “urban voids”-underutilized lots that remain dormant and unproductive. While the Naturhus typology offers a potential solution for symbiotic, glass-encased green living and food production in rural settings, it has yet to be adapted as a viable infill solution for the American urban grid. This thesis investigates the potential for urbanizing the Naturhus concept by reinterpreting a row-house typology as an infill strategy to create “greenhouse villages,” where residents actively participate in their own food production. It focuses on the cold-climate urban fabric of …

Patterns In Awareness And Uptake Of The Lpa Among Older Adults In Singapore, Paulin Tay Straughan, Emi Loh, Cassandra Ng, Yi Wen (Chen Yiwen) Tan, Wensi Lim

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Findings from a survey with 7910 Singapore Life Panel members reveal that awareness of the Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) was relatively high, but actual uptake remained low, with only one in three having made an LPA and pronounced gaps among lower socioeconomic groups. Despite this, attitudes towards LPA were generally positive, with perceived benefits centered on peace of mind and reducing burdens on family members. A major barrier to adoption is the misconception that children automatically have the legal authority to make decisions if parents lose mental capacity. Structural and psychological barriers, including cost, complexity, and limited guidance, further …

Optimisation Of Photosensitive Recording Materials For Broadband Holographic Optical Elements, Michael Murray May 2026

Optimisation Of Photosensitive Recording Materials For Broadband Holographic Optical Elements, Michael Murray

Doctoral

The introduction of broadband (white) LED outdoor lighting has led to significant energy savings. However, this has come at the cost of increased light pollution which has negative impacts both on ecological systems and human health. This light pollution is largely the result of the lack of control measures for the directionality of the light emitted by outdoor LED lighting. The lack of directionality also results in higher energy consumption in order to compensate for the light scattered to the atmosphere and sufficiently illuminate the target area. In this thesis holographic optical elements (HOEs) are proposed as a complementary technology …

Seagrass meadows are one of the many habitats worldwide under threat from human disturbance and worsening climate conditions. This habitat provides many critical ecosystem services to coastal environments, which is why conserving and restoring seagrass meadows is critical. This study investigates the long-term success and failures from several eelgrass restoration sites in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey. Aerial imagery from multiple years were digitized in ArcGIS to assess restoration trajectories over time. Three of the sites were assessed over a period of twelve years (2012-2023), and one site was assessed twice (2021 and 2023). Results from these time series analyses showed …

Adult Age And The Evaluation Of Moral Judgment, Gianna Derosa-Norena May 2026

Adult Age And The Evaluation Of Moral Judgment, Gianna Derosa-Norena

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Moral judgments play an important role in social interactions, intergroup conflicts, and the evaluation of behaviors. Moral Foundations Theory proposes that moral reasoning is grounded in five psychological foundations: authority, loyalty, purity, harm, and fairness. Prior research has shown that individuals form stereotypes about different groups and the moral foundations they prioritize, as well as greatly exaggerate the perceived moral differences between groups. The present study examines adult age differences and the stereotyping of moral foundations by investigating whether individuals accurately perceive moral differences between younger and older adults. Participants (N = 300; 100 participants per perspective condition) completed a …

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The purpose of this study was to better understand how an organization's prosocial behaviors, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), shape an individual member's private, prosocial behavior. This study examined whether an individual’s locus of control (LOC) works as a moderator to shape the CSR-behavior relationship. Participants were recruited through Montclair State University’s SONA pool and assigned into a High CSR, Neutral, or Corporate Social Irresponsibility (CSiR) condition. Each participant completed self-report measures to assess internal LOC before the experimental manipulation. Each participant reviewed a news article to match their CSR condition and then had an opportunity to donate their compensation, which …

Interview Format And Job Pursuit Intention, Pallavi Nimbappa Honkanadavar May 2026

Interview Format And Job Pursuit Intention, Pallavi Nimbappa Honkanadavar

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This study examined how interview format influences job pursuit intentions (JPI) in the context of increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in hiring. Specifically, it compared human-led, AI-led, and AI-assisted scenario interview formats, and tested whether perceived procedural fairness and anticipated interview success mediated these relationships, as well as whether AI familiarity moderated the effects. Preliminary results from a sample of 72 participants indicated that, although the overall effect of interview format on JPI was not statistically significant, the pattern of means suggested highest JPI in human-led interview formats, followed by AI-assisted interviews, and finally completely AI-led interviews. Mediation analyses …

Shape Variation In The Mandible Of The Borophagine Canids And Implications For Predatory Behavior, Benjamin Neavear May 2026

Shape Variation In The Mandible Of The Borophagine Canids And Implications For Predatory Behavior, Benjamin Neavear

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The borophagines are an extinct lineage of canids that inhabited North America for more than 20 million years. This group included genera such as Aelurodon, Borophagus, and Epicyon. Borophagines are commonly referred to as “bone-crushing dogs” because their skull morphology converged with that of extant hyenas, predators capable of consuming bone. The purpose of this study was to determine whether convergence was present in the mandible, an anatomical structure strongly correlated with feeding behavior, particularly in the genera Aelurodon and Borophagus. It was hypothesized that most borophagine taxa possessed mandibular shapes similar to those of hyenas. Numerous mandibular characters were …

The Challenge Of Responsible Sovereignty And The Dilemma Of Responsibility To Protect: A Case Study In The Middle East, Mona Shujaieh May 2026

The Challenge Of Responsible Sovereignty And The Dilemma Of Responsibility To Protect: A Case Study In The Middle East, Mona Shujaieh

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis applies the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) framework to examine the evolving relationship between state sovereignty and humanitarian intervention in the modern international system. It develops the concept of “responsible sovereignty” to show how sovereignty has shifted from an absolute principle of non-interference toward a socially constructed and conditional norm increasingly linked to a state’s responsibility to protect its population. By tracing the transition from Westphalian sovereignty to contemporary understandings of sovereignty as responsibility, the study highlights how international norms reshape expectations of state behavior while also generating persistent tensions in practice. Focusing on the Middle East, the thesis …

Creating A "Good Person": Netiquette And Instagram, Melissa S. Danai-Nolder May 2026

Creating A "Good Person": Netiquette And Instagram, Melissa S. Danai-Nolder

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This project aimed to ask the question, “How does digital etiquette, or netiquette, lead to socialization of self-presentation on Instagram?” I interviewed 15 students classified as "Generation Z" who attend a northeastern university and have an Instagram account. This was done using a convenience sample of participants who were asked to participate in the interview. Done by the convenience of the individuals who were at the location at the time. The results indicate a disconnect between wanting to be seen as a “good person” and the means used to paint this image. Netiquette plays a role in crafting self-presentation, as …

Relationships And Recovery: Social Factors In Alcoholics Recovery, Elizabeth Moe May 2026

Relationships And Recovery: Social Factors In Alcoholics Recovery, Elizabeth Moe

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Introduction. Recovery is a process of change through which individuals improve their overall wellbeing, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential. In recovering from alcohol and substance use, there are many paths one may take to reach recovery, but engagement with new social circles and communities has been shown to be the most effective. This leads to the research question: what is the role of relationships during alcohol recovery? Methods. This mixed-methods study uses both qualitative and quantitative data. Quantitative data from the National Alcohol Survey was used to compare the effects and perceptions of drinking on …

An Invasion Of The Intimate Sphere: The Manipulation Of Libido Under Totalitarian Regimes, Elyssa Lucero May 2026

An Invasion Of The Intimate Sphere: The Manipulation Of Libido Under Totalitarian Regimes, Elyssa Lucero

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This paper examines the temporal nature of libidinal control in the totalitarian systems represented in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. Arguing that the most enduring forms of domination operate through the reorganization of desire, the essay explores how regimes intervene in familial, romantic, and social attachments to redirect affective energy towards the state. Orwell depicts a primitive, reactive phase of control in which attachments are violently ruptured, whereas Huxley imagines an advanced system that operates through preemption, never allowing attachments to form. Drawing on Freud’s theory of redirected libido, Berlant’s theory of Cruel Optimism, Marxist …

Analysis Of Collective Behavior In Living And Nonliving Systems, Kaitlyn Cohan May 2026

Analysis Of Collective Behavior In Living And Nonliving Systems, Kaitlyn Cohan

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis aims at understanding the phenomenon of of self-organization in complex dissipative systems, living and nonliving. Dissipative systems are characterized by their search for energy, interactions with their surroundings and the production of entropy, all of which result in the creation of stable structures or patterns, which persist as long as the initial environmental conditions are maintained. The two specific models that we chose to study here are (a) Futbol (or Soccer) and (b) a chemical system involving free-floating menthol crystals floating on a fluid surface to represent nonliving systems. Using experiments and mathematical models, we will try to …

Navigating Faith And Sexuality: Christian Pastors' Experiences In Providing Pastoral Care For Lgbtq+ Youth, Keith I. Raymond May 2026

Navigating Faith And Sexuality: Christian Pastors' Experiences In Providing Pastoral Care For Lgbtq+ Youth, Keith I. Raymond

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Within the Christian context, religion and sexuality are often cultural factors that shape the identity development of LGBTQ+ youth, with congregational stance (affirming, tolerant, non–affirming) and individual religiosity/spirituality serving as protective or risk factors (Crockett et al., 2018; Raedel et al., 2020; Yarhouse & Sadusky, 2021). Christian pastors’ theology, relational ministry approach, and pastoral skills influence how they engage with and care for queer youth, yet the professional ties between pastors and LGBTQ+ youth remain underrepresented in counseling literature. Guided by queer theory, this qualitative case study examined how Christian pastors understand and navigate pastoral care for LGBTQ+ youth within …
