The Baby And The Bathwater: Reproductive Abuse As Domestic Violence And Empowering Bodily Autonomy Through The Law, Kadhapriya Lindo
The Baby And The Bathwater: Reproductive Abuse As Domestic Violence And Empowering Bodily Autonomy Through The Law, Kadhapriya Lindo
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
Reproductive abuse—ranging from contraceptive sabotage and coerced pregnancy to coerced abortion and sexual violations such as stealthing—operates as a distinct and under-recognized form of domestic violence. By assessing medical, sociological, and legal research, it is clear how reproductive abuse holds a victim’s body and reproductive ability hostage, producing long-term physical, psychological, and familial harms. Existing criminal statutes, which focus on force-based sexual offenses, do not capture non-physical reproductive violations such as medication tampering or nonconsensual condom removal. Further, civil remedies, including tort claims and custody determinations, inadequately account for the harms of coerced conception and the long-term legal ties it …
Textualism Canons Applied To Equal Pay Act "Factor Other Than Sex" Exception Suggests No Brightline Rule, Daniel Rub
Textualism Canons Applied To Equal Pay Act "Factor Other Than Sex" Exception Suggests No Brightline Rule, Daniel Rub
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
There is a circuit split regarding whether an employer can rely on an employee’s prior salary without violating the Equal Pay Act (EPA). The Seventh Circuit always allows an employer to consider prior salary, while the Ninth Circuit bans the use of prior salary considerations. The Federal Circuit joined the Eleventh and Eighth Circuit in a middle ground approach.
As Title VII incorporates the same exceptions as the EPA, the Supreme Court’s Title VII analysis will likely be probative to its eventual decision regarding the EPA. The Court will also likely employ textualist judicial canons to determine the desired lower …
Under The Influence: Why The Federal Government Should Implement A Tier System For Drunk Drivers, Maycie Bloom
Under The Influence: Why The Federal Government Should Implement A Tier System For Drunk Drivers, Maycie Bloom
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
Drunk driving persists as a serious problem in the United States, claiming thousands of lives every year. Although the drunk driving fatality rate decreased following advancements in federal drunk driving legislation during the 1990s, after decades of remaining unchanged, the drunk driving fatality rate has increased in recent years. The increase in drunk driving fatalities has been associated, in part, with an increase in drunk driving recidivism, a phenomenon that is closely linked to alcoholism and poses a serious problem for the community. Individuals who suffer from alcoholism often develop higher tolerances, which can lead to overconsumption and a diminished …
Undue Hardship In Student Loan Bankruptcy: A Circuit-By-Circuit Analysis Of Brunner, Rahaf Alrehaili
Undue Hardship In Student Loan Bankruptcy: A Circuit-By-Circuit Analysis Of Brunner, Rahaf Alrehaili
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
The judicial landscape of student loan discharge under the Brunner test reflects both commonalities and significant divergences across circuits. While courts generally adhere to a shared framework for assessing undue hardship, they remain divided on key issues, including whether retirement savings qualify as necessary expenses, the extent to which religious tithing is protected under the Religious Liberty and Charitable Donation Protection Act (RLCDPA), and whether a debtor’s refusal to enroll in an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan constitutes bad faith under Brunner’s third prong. Courts also disagree on whether IDR eligibility should be considered under the first or second prong …
Political Weapons Or Judicial Officers: How The United States Supreme Court's Increased Political Polarisation Highlights An Immediate Need For Reform, Marcello Jones
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
The “politicization of justice” has become a most unwelcome stereotype for our nation’s highest court. While it is understandable that Justices must still judge, and so in a practical matter, leaving their political views at the door is not always possible. When society can accurately and consistently predict the Justices’ votes solely based on their political ideology, it is difficult to see past the view that the Justices are consistently manipulating the Constitution and the facts of the cases before them to serve their own political agenda. And when an Executive can be elected into office primarily based on the …
Religious Law Schools, Rankings, And Bias: Measuring The Rankings Penalty At Religious Law Schools, Michael Conklin
Religious Law Schools, Rankings, And Bias: Measuring The Rankings Penalty At Religious Law Schools, Michael Conklin
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
Law school rankings play a pivotal role in shaping legal education. However, these rankings have faced substantial criticism for their methodology, susceptibility to manipulation, and bias related to political ideology and race. This Article measures bias by applying a novel, quantitative analysis to disparities between the objective overall rankings and the subjective peer rankings among religiously affiliated law schools. The findings reveal that religiously affiliated law schools experience a 17.65 peer rankings penalty. Further analysis strengthens the evidence of bias by showing a heightened penalty among more devoutly religious law schools. A longitudinal analysis finds that this trend is rapidly …

Is Hipaa Still Protecting Your Medical Data? An Analysis Of Deidentification As A Security Measure In The Age Of Ai., Jessica Novak
Is Hipaa Still Protecting Your Medical Data? An Analysis Of Deidentification As A Security Measure In The Age Of Ai., Jessica Novak
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly altering the landscape of many industries, and for some, faster than the law can necessarily keep up, leaving those industries unprotected from AI-related concerns. For the healthcare industry in particular, the integration of AI presents large-scale data privacy concerns. The current law protecting patient data privacy, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (“HIPAA”), is potentially already outdated and inadequate; concerns about HIPAA’s efficacy have long-existed and AI’s integration has only solidified this concern. It is potentially inadequate because of a provision within the law itself-deidentification. HIPAA allows healthcare providers to remove identifying information from a …
"Smart" Cities And Due Care With Emerging Technologies, Anthony J. Luppino
"Smart" Cities And Due Care With Emerging Technologies, Anthony J. Luppino
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
The rapid development of increasingly powerful technologies presents new opportunities to produce public benefits, as exemplified by the “Smart Cities” movement. Conversely, emerging technologies pose significant threats to public safety and individual rights, as evidenced by high-profile cyberattacks and other technology-related incidents, and in warnings issued by some Artificial Intelligence experts. This article examines the responsibilities of local governments in the United States as users of technology and as regulators of uses by other actors—arguing that they have a duty of care, traceable to the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution, to act diligently in that dual role whether or not …
Exploration Of Expressive Prosody During Dyadic Conversation In Adults With Dementia, Kara Marie Sabanski
Exploration Of Expressive Prosody During Dyadic Conversation In Adults With Dementia, Kara Marie Sabanski
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Dementia is associated with progressive cognitive and communicative impairments that can contribute to social withdrawal and reduced quality of life. Although prior research has explored musical interventions and the use of prosodic features for early diagnosis, little is known about how expressive prosody is linked to engagement and communicative state during dyadic conversation in individuals with dementia. The present study examines different speech characteristics present in expressive prosody during conversation and explores whether these characteristics are associated with differences in conversational and behavioral engagement. Acoustic measures of pitch and speaking rate were analyzed during conversational interactions. Results indicated that prosodic …
Affective Perception Of Color In Classroom Design, Emmalyn Burns
Affective Perception Of Color In Classroom Design, Emmalyn Burns
Interior Design Undergraduate Honors Theses
The physical environment of a classroom plays a crucial role in shaping how students learn, engage, and interact with their education. This study focuses on color’s influence on well-being, focus, and overall academic experience. Many higher education classrooms still rely on a standard that implements neutral colors, which does not always align with student preferences. While prior research has shown that color can have measurable cognitive and emotional effects, its thoughtful application in university settings remains limited. Current architectural design processes often overlook ongoing user-based feedback past the pre-design phase, leaving students without input on the decisions for their learning …

Semi structured-in-depth interviews with 17 participants explored interactions with instructors, peers, course content, and technology. Analysis followed phenomenological reduction procedures to identify the essence of participants lived experiences. Key findings revealed that instructor presence and responsiveness strengthened bonding and linking capital; peer collaboration fostered belonging and bridging capital; and technology mediated tools reduced transactional distance when paired with clear course design and timely feedback. These relational and technological …
“Sometimes I Feel That Going To College Was A Waste Of Time”: Latinas’ Lived Experiences Navigating Culture, Gender, And Marriage Post-College Degree, Nancy Peña
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative critical narrative study explores how Latinas navigate and make meaning of gender roles within their heterosexual marriages post-college graduation. Data are collected via semi-structured interviews with 10 Latina participants: an initial plática focus group, followed by individual interviews, and a final plática focus group for member checking. Key findings reveal that despite Latinas acquiring autonomy, stability, negotiated power, personal growth, and social development as a result of attaining a degree in higher education, overall development is limited due to heightened responsibilities, persistent gender hierarchies, continuous religious norms, and constant gender role guilt. The evidence suggests that although attaining …
Data Driven Monitoring And Control Of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Process, Jose De Jesus Galarza
Data Driven Monitoring And Control Of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Process, Jose De Jesus Galarza
Theses and Dissertations
The Laser Powder Bed Fusion Process (LPBF) has been one of the main processes of additive manufacturing, enabling the manufacturing of complex geometries, customization, and lightweight parts. Modern LPBF processes have integrated monitoring systems that capture the light emissions per layer for quality assurance. However, standard defect detection algorithms have not yet achieved the high precision required due to the inherently variable nature of the signal, insufficient data for model training, and the confounding effects of the print.
The processes still have some challenges, such as characterizing the roughness from the build parameters alone, improving the pore detection using the …

Effects Of Vitamin E Deficiency On Anxiety-Like Behavior In Zebrafish With Distinct Stress Coping Styles, Areem Zahid
Effects Of Vitamin E Deficiency On Anxiety-Like Behavior In Zebrafish With Distinct Stress Coping Styles, Areem Zahid
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Stress and anxiety disorders affect millions worldwide and represent a significant public health burden. Individual differences in stress coping style and antioxidant regulation contribute to variability in stress responsiveness and anxiety-related behaviors. Oxidative imbalance has been implicated in the neurobiology of anxiety, but its interaction with inherent stress coping phenotypes remains unclear. This study examined whether long-term dietary vitamin E deficiency alters anxiety-like behaviors in zebrafish selectively bred for proactive and reactive stress coping styles. Adult zebrafish were maintained on either a vitamin E–sufficient or vitamin E–deficient diet for five months, followed by behavioral assessment using the novel tank diving …

These reflections in this thesis are an analysis of narratives based on my lived experiences as an immigrant, migrant student who is now a certified Bilingual & Special Education teacher servicing students, many of whom are bilingual, in public school classrooms. My goal is to connect my life experiences to teaching practices and thus embrace and celebrate my linguistic identity. Bilingual educators have a language learning journey that drives their classroom practices. When bilingual teachers reflect on their bilingual trajectory and connect their life experiences to research, they may provide spaces for stronger positive impacts on bilingual students, and their …
F.L.A.I.R. -- A Flow-Level Autoencoder For Intrusion Recognition, Joseph P. Dumond
F.L.A.I.R. -- A Flow-Level Autoencoder For Intrusion Recognition, Joseph P. Dumond
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks underpin critical infrastructure worldwide, yet securing them remains an open challenge. Traditional intrusion detection systems require labeled attack data for training, a resource that is rarely available in real industrial deployments. They also fail against novel threats, a model trained on known attacks has no basis for detecting anything outside its training set. This thesis presents a Flow-Level Autoencoder for Intrusion Recognition, or FLAIR, a fully unsupervised deep learning system for network intrusion detection in IIoT environments. FLAIR is built on a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) autoencoder trained exclusively on normal network traffic. Rather …

A Case Study On Using Large Language Models To Drive Convergence-Oriented Literature Discovery In Critical Infrastructure Security, Caden J. Williamson
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
In the world of cybersecurity, the rapid development of artificial intelligence proposes a constant challenge for researchers to defend critical infrastructure. Attacks on critical infrastructure can be catastrophic, and emerging strategies of cyber-adversaries that implement leading AI models can expose vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure much faster than previous tools. To defend against this emerging threat, the Cybersecurity Research Working Group at the University of Arkansas is aiming to develop a cross-domain and cross-discipline center of excellence. To support this effort, the group is writing a literature review on the topics of AI and critical systems security. Literature review is an …
The Impact Of Palm Cooling On The Physiological And Cognitive Function Of Aerobically Trained Individuals, Katherine L. Tibbs
The Impact Of Palm Cooling On The Physiological And Cognitive Function Of Aerobically Trained Individuals, Katherine L. Tibbs

Background: Cooling strategies have been shown to combat the harmful effects that an increase in body temperature can potentially cause, and palm cooling in particular has been adopted due to its effectiveness in mitigating muscle fatigue during exercise. While there is clear support that this improves muscular strength and endurance, there is a lack of research on the impact palm cooling has on the mental aspect of physical activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the cognitive and physiological effects of palm cooling on aerobic exercise performance. Methods: Ten aerobically trained participants between the ages of 18-35 were …
Neither Academy Nor Convent: Reconciling Religious And Feminist Readings Of Mary Astell, Hannah E. Brown
Neither Academy Nor Convent: Reconciling Religious And Feminist Readings Of Mary Astell, Hannah E. Brown
Honors Theses
Mary Astell is frequently interpreting through competing frameworks: as either a feminist advocate of women’s rational autonomy or a religious conservative committed to Anglican orthodoxy. This division reflects a broader tendency in Astell scholarship to separate her intellectual, moral, and theological commitments into distinct and often conflicting domains. This paper argues that such fragmentation is not grounded in Astell’s own philosophy but is instead the result of interpretive assumptions—particularly the view that intellectual autonomy and religious obedience are incompatible. By examining Astell’s account of reason, education for women, and spiritual development, this paper demonstrates that these elements form an integrated …

The Functions Of Role- Playing Games: How Participants Create Community, Solve Problems And Explore Identity, De Sarah Lynne Bowman (2010) [Reseña De Libro], Cristo Leon
Journal of Roleplaying Studies and STEAM
The Functions of Role-Playing Games: How Participants Create Community, Solve Problems and Explore Identity, by Sarah Lynne Bowman, is an ambitious, wide-ranging, and still necessary work for role-playing game studies. Published in 2010, the book proposes that role-playing and roleplaying games fulfill three main social and psychological functions: creating community, facilitating problem solving, and enabling the exploration of identity. Bowman develops this thesis through a combination of theoretical review, cultural reflection, and participant-observer ethnography, based on interviews with players of tabletop role-playing games, live-action roleplaying games, and virtual environments. Organized into seven chapters, the book moves clearly from the …
