Hand Gesture Control For A Di2erential Drive Robot, Seyoung Kan, Laray Lopez, Zachary Hinnen, Alfredo Weitzenfeld

Bellini College REU Symposium (BCREUS)

As technology becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, seamless and multimodal human-robot interaction has become essential. This project presents a lightweight, real-time human-following system implemented on a differential-drive robot (Ham-Bot) using a Raspberry Pi, motivated by the growing need for robotic companionship among elderly and mobility-impaired individuals. The system integrates HSV-based color segmentation, MediaPipe hand gesture recognition, LiDAR-based distance regulation, and a six-state finite state machine to achieve robust human-robot interaction without relying on heavy machine learning models for body detection. A socket-based communication architecture streams camera frames from the robot to a MacOS client, where perception is performed and …

Last-Mile Autonomous Delivery Robot, Lucas Araujo Bianco, Clement Joseph, Chance Hamilton, Alfredo Weitzenfeld

Bellini College REU Symposium (BCREUS)

Autonomous delivery robots require robust, real-time navigation systems to safely traverse dynamic outdoor environments like college campuses. This project presents an edge-optimized vision pipeline deployed on a resource-constrained Jetson Nano-based robot to accurately identify drivable surfaces and detect path intersections. We employ a lightweight semantic segmentation Convolutional Neural Network (LRASPP MobileNetV3-Large), initially pretrained on the Cityscapes dataset. By applying transfer learning to a manually refined, locally labeled dataset of our campus, we significantly improved feature extraction for urban textures and adapted the model to our specific use case. To ensure efficient edge deployment, the network is optimized using TensorRT [1], …

Microarchitectural Vulnerabilities And Performance Tradeoffs In Shared Scientific Computing, Zyad Abd-Elrahman, Santosh Pandey May 2026

Microarchitectural Vulnerabilities And Performance Tradeoffs In Shared Scientific Computing, Zyad Abd-Elrahman, Santosh Pandey

Bellini College REU Symposium (BCREUS)

Introduction & Problem Statement

Shared scientific computing platforms are built for speed and utilization, but they create a security problem that isolation alone can't fully solve. Even with TEEs, containers, or a privilege separation in place, the hardware underneath remains a shared resource. Speculative execution, cache contention, interconnect timing, and similar microarchitectural effects can leak information or create integrity risks across protection boundaries without any malicious code involved. For CI operators running graph workloads, HPC kernels, or ML pipelines in co-tenanted systems, the threat is inherent in normal execution. The real question isn't whether these vulnerabilities exist, but it's what …

Ses And Cognitive Interdependence In Romantic Relationships, Emily Young, Alexis Coniku, Ledina Imami May 2026

Ses And Cognitive Interdependence In Romantic Relationships, Emily Young, Alexis Coniku, Ledina Imami

Research Symposium

Lower socioeconomic status (SES) couples face many relationship challenges, from conflict to high rates of divorce. Recent work shows that, in response to these challenges, lower-SES people engage in self-protection, which may lower relationship satisfaction. These findings suggest that SES may influence the extent to which couple members perceive each other as one unit, which may contribute to important relationship outcomes. Here we test this idea by exploring if SES predicts people’s cognitive representations of their partner. Two studies (total N = 468) tested if: 1) SES was associated with cognitive interdependence (CI), as seen in spontaneous plural pronoun use …

Paired Fossil Burrows From Los Cabos Group Of Spain, Cambrian-Ordovician: A New Ichnotaxon Or Rosselia Prolifera?, Paige Grossenbacher, Maximiliano Paz

Research Symposium

The Middle Cambrian to Lower Ordovician Los Cabos Group from Spain constitutes a >6000 m-thick succession deposited in the margin of Northern Gondwana. The succession is represented by sandstone and mudstone associated with deltaic systems affected by tides, waves, and storms. An unusual occurrence of a fossil burrow known as Rosselia was studied, in order to understand its morphology, potential producers, and ethology. Rosselia is usually represented by a single vertical tube that has a concentric infill, whereas the studied specimens are found in a paired form. The specimens occur in ripple cross-laminated and cross-bedded flaser sandstone interpreted to be …

Corporate Neocolonialism, The Liability Of Foreignness, And Cultural Extractivism: The Rise And Fall Of The Stanford Cricket Empire In Antigua And The West Indies, Martin Barrett

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

Convicted Texas financier, Allen Stanford, reportedly fell in love with cricket during his many years living in Antigua. This love of cricket culminated with the infamous “20/20 for $20 million” match where the Stanford Superstars defeated the England cricket team at the Stanford Cricket Ground by 10 wickets in November 2008. A little over three months after the Super Series, Stanford’s cricket ventures dissipated when his companies were placed into receivership. The series was not, however, Stanford’s first foray into cricket. The purpose of this paper is to critically analyze the totality of Stanford’s involvement in cricket in the West …
