Empowering Junior High School Students’ Collaboration Skills Through Science Learning Using The Secret Mission Game, Rahma Fika Kurnia, Imraatul Mufidah, Dyne Rizki Puspitasari

Journal of Innovation and Teacher Professionalism

This study aimed to empower the collaboration skills of Class VII B students at SMP Laboratorium UM through the implementation of the Game-Based Learning model using the Secret Mission game in science learning on the topic of Physical and Chemical Changes. The study was motivated by the low level of students’ collaboration skills, as indicated by previous classroom assignments that were mostly completed individually rather than collaboratively in groups. The study employed the Lesson Study approach, which consisted of three stages: Plan, Do, and See. During the planning stage, the Lesson Study team collaboratively designed learning modules, game scenarios, instructional …

Political Villains: America’S Perception Of Corrupt Politicians, Robin Nakamura May 2026

Political Villains: America’S Perception Of Corrupt Politicians, Robin Nakamura

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Online and social media sources have made political news more accessible and digestible than ever before. While beneficial, it raises questions regarding the truth and quality of political news being spread and the effects it may be having on the public. In this paper, I seek to expand on existing research regarding political corruption and online media sources. Previous research has highlighted the rise of disinformation in online news sources, noting that social media reporting does not necessarily hold government officials accountable. Using the Chapman University Survey of American Fears Wave 10 (2024), the relationship between fears of political corruption …

How Integration Of Hollywood Techniques Benefits Filmmakers And Improves Viewership: Application Of Bong Joon Ho’S Work, Lucy Cronin May 2026

How Integration Of Hollywood Techniques Benefits Filmmakers And Improves Viewership: Application Of Bong Joon Ho’S Work, Lucy Cronin

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Bong Joon Ho utilizes techniques derived from Hollywood cinema to transcend borders globally, informing viewers about the socio-politics in South Korea while engaging them as well. Based on Film Scholar Andrew Higson’s theory that Hollywood is everywhere, I argue that by analyzing three of Bong Joon Ho’s films, Memories of Murder (2003), Mother (2009), and Parasite (2019), it is understood that through the language of imagery, South Korean socio-politics can be understood. Comprehensive literature reviews of the film's commentary on socio-political circumstances that reflect South Korea’s past or current struggles, and comparisons of the cinematography of critical scenes in the …

Through A Partisan Lens: How Political Identity Shapes Economic Evaluations, Daniel Shin May 2026

Through A Partisan Lens: How Political Identity Shapes Economic Evaluations, Daniel Shin

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

People often disagree about the state of the economy, even when faced with the same facts. These differences are especially highlighted during times of inflation, changing employment trends, and public debate over the economy.  Relying on data from the American National Election Studies (ANES), a representative survey of U.S. adults, I examined how general partisan alignment, along with other factors, shapes perceptions of the national economy and influences citizens’ judgements about economic conditions. The results show that partisanship strongly biases economic evaluations, demonstrating that people who align with the incumbent party express greater optimism, with the opposition partisans showing greater …

Blue, Red, And Bordered, Estefania Morales Vilchis May 2026

Blue, Red, And Bordered, Estefania Morales Vilchis

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The paper will explore the various social and individual variables that will impact how people perceive immigration as either beneficial to society or a societal threat. Some of the primary variables that will be examined in detail are one’s political affiliation, age, and geographical location; this will address the profound "why" behind our current beliefs on newcomers. The study will particularly address the "Contact Hypothesis" versus "Group Threat Theory" through the lens of how one's personal experiences with immigrants, or lack of, will shape public opinion. The study will focus on the rising psychological issue of "demographic anxiety", specifically, fears …

Listening To The Landscape: Designing A Conversational Agent For Native Botanical Literacy, Lucy Periale May 2026

Listening To The Landscape: Designing A Conversational Agent For Native Botanical Literacy, Lucy Periale

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This project investigates how physical devices integrated with conversational AI can support botanical literacy and encourage engagement with the natural world, with a particular focus on increasing awareness of California native plants. It asks: how can tangible, voice-interactive devices facilitate place-based learning without disrupting direct outdoor experience? Existing plant identification tools rely on screen-based interaction, which can distance users from their natural surroundings. This research contributes to interaction design and human-computer interaction discourse by exploring embodied learning through devices that prioritize environmental immersion. This project developed multiple design concepts and developed three prototypes namely Buddy Bot, Radio Agent and Plant …

Ai Is Taking Over!: A New Generation Of Unemployment Fears, Amaya V. Hepburn May 2026

Ai Is Taking Over!: A New Generation Of Unemployment Fears, Amaya V. Hepburn

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The growing panic surrounding AI taking over the workforce is strong in a distinct group of demographics, in contrast to the fear of computers taking over the workforce that was seen in previous generations. This suggests that AI developments have sparked a wave of fear that is unlike the fear of tech developments in the past. I have discovered that this fear is prevalent across several demographics: age, employment, and income. By cross-analyzing through the 2017 and 2025 fear surveys, I discovered that fear of AI is more prevalent in younger generations and is more threatening to students entering the …

Raised To Hold Firm: Authoritarian Child-Rearing Values And Opposition To Political Compromise, Morgan Romine May 2026

Raised To Hold Firm: Authoritarian Child-Rearing Values And Opposition To Political Compromise, Morgan Romine

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This research project examines how at-home values might explain an individual's view on political compromise. Using the 2024 American National Election Studies (ANES) survey data, I study the relationship between authoritarian child-rearing preferences and support for political compromise. While existing research has linked authoritarian values to attitudes such as prejudice and support for strong leaders, less attention has been paid to how those same values shape attitudes toward political negotiation. My hypothesis is that people who prioritize obedience, respect, and good manners over independence and curiosity in children reflect broader goals toward order and stability, and that those preferences translate …

Evaluating Team Formation Strategies With Algorithms, Ethan E. Lopez, Andy Vo May 2026

Evaluating Team Formation Strategies With Algorithms, Ethan E. Lopez, Andy Vo

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Effective teamwork is essential for collaborative learning, yet forming compatible student groups remains a persistent challenge. This study explores how algorithmic team-building methods influence students’ social and academic compatibility overtime. To support this investigation, we designed a visual survey system called “The Disco Ball." Evaluating work ethics, lifestyles, behaviors, and communication styles, students were initially assigned to project teams using one of three conditions: (1) random assignment (control), (2) a “most matches” condition maximizing similarity between students, and (3) a “diverse communication styles” condition designed to balance differing interaction preferences. After an initial collaboration period, students were given the opportunity …

Democratic Legitimacy And Data Governance: Data Privacy Philosophy And Regulatory Preferences In The U.S. Vs Eu, Mia H. Truong May 2026

Democratic Legitimacy And Data Governance: Data Privacy Philosophy And Regulatory Preferences In The U.S. Vs Eu, Mia H. Truong

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence and large-scale data collection has intensified tensions between commercial innovation and consumer privacy, raising a fundamental democratic question: do Americans understand their data protections–and does this shape their demand for regulation? The EU and U.S. represent two fundamentally opposed approaches to data privacy regulation: the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) treats personal data as a fundamental human right, rooted in post-WWII constitutional protections against state surveillance and authoritarianism, while the U.S. operates through fragmented, sector-specific state laws that treat personal data as a market commodity. This study is the first to empirically investigate …

Fear Of The Other: Explaining Immigration Anxiety In The United States, Ramon Arguelles May 2026

Fear Of The Other: Explaining Immigration Anxiety In The United States, Ramon Arguelles

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Illegal immigration has become one of the most politically divisive issues in the United States, with many Americans fearing its social, political, and economic effects. This paper examines possible causes of the fear of illegal immigration, specifically focusing on media consumption, employment status, and education level. Using Wave 11 of the Chapman Survey of American Fears, a nationally representative survey of U.S. adults, this paper analyzes whether these variables can serve as indicators of fear of illegal immigration. Drawing on media framing theory, labor-market competition theory, and theories of education and cognitive sophistication, three hypotheses were tested using Pearson correlation …

Case Report: Pott’S Puffy Tumor, A Rare Complication Of Sinusitis, Je Seong Lee, Esai A. Hernandez, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

We report the case of an 11-year-old female who presented with lethargy and new left upper extremity weakness after a recent Emergency Department visit for fever, rhinorrhea, and head fullness, and was subsequently diagnosed with Pott’s Puffy Tumor(PPT). Pott’s Puffy Tumor is a frontal bone osteomyelitis with an frontal  subperiosteal abscess and represents a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of sinusitis. Prompt imaging and timely clinical intervention are critical, though variable presentations can make diagnosis challenging. This case highlights the importance of early recognition, appropriate imaging, and prompt surgical and antibiotic management given the PPT’s  strong association with intracranial complications. …

A Neck Too Tight: Emergent Cricothyrotomy For Airway Collapse From Expanding Post Anterior Cervical Discectomy And Fusion (Acdf) Hematoma, Nicole R. Eregha, Kishan Patel, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna May 2026

A Neck Too Tight: Emergent Cricothyrotomy For Airway Collapse From Expanding Post Anterior Cervical Discectomy And Fusion (Acdf) Hematoma, Nicole R. Eregha, Kishan Patel, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a commonly performed surgical procedure used to treat cervical spine pathology including radiculopathy and spinal cord compression. Although generally safe, postoperative complications can occur. One of the most feared complications is expanding neck hematoma, which may lead to rapid airway obstruction due to tracheal compression and soft tissue swelling. The reported incidence of postoperative hematoma after ACDF ranges from 0.2–1.9%, with a subset of patients requiring emergent airway intervention or surgical evacuation [1]. Patients with postoperative hematoma typically present with neck swelling, dysphagia, hoarseness, dyspnea, and inability to tolerate secretions, symptoms that may …

A Pain In The Neck: Lemierre Syndrome Presenting With Retropharyngeal Abscess, Clara Keum, Leo Midure May 2026

A Pain In The Neck: Lemierre Syndrome Presenting With Retropharyngeal Abscess, Clara Keum, Leo Midure

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Lemierre syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein following an oropharyngeal infection. It is most commonly associated with Fusobacterium necrophorum,  and typically begins with pharyngitis or deep neck space infections, which can extend into adjacent vascular structures. Retropharyngeal abscesses are among the deep neck infections that may predispose patients to this complication due to their proximity to the internal jugular vein and surrounding fascial planes.

Although Lemierre syndrome classically occurs in otherwise healthy adolescents and young adults, it can also develop in immunocompromised individuals or patients with complex medical conditions. …

The Tensile Gallbladder Sign: A Case Report Of Acute Gangrenous Cholecystitis Diagnosed By A Rare Computed Tomography Finding, Lan D. Ngo, Trent R. Malcolm May 2026

The Tensile Gallbladder Sign: A Case Report Of Acute Gangrenous Cholecystitis Diagnosed By A Rare Computed Tomography Finding, Lan D. Ngo, Trent R. Malcolm

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Acute cholecystitis is one of the most common causes of acute abdominal pain in the emergency department, accounting for approximately 200,000 hospitalizations annually in the United States (Gallagher & Charles, 2022) Ultrasound is the established first-line imaging modality for suspected cholecystitis. However, compute tomography (CT) is increasingly obtained for undifferentiated abdominal pain and offers complementary, operator-independent evaluation.  The tensile gallbladder fundus sign is defined on CT as the absence of fundal flattening by the anterior abdominal wall due to elevated intraluminal pressure.

Ketamine With Opioids Vs. Ketamine With Non-Opioid Analgesics For Vaso-Occlusive Crisis In Sickle Cell Disease: A Prisma-Style Scoping Review, Akhil Tumpudi May 2026

Ketamine With Opioids Vs. Ketamine With Non-Opioid Analgesics For Vaso-Occlusive Crisis In Sickle Cell Disease: A Prisma-Style Scoping Review, Akhil Tumpudi

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs) are the hallmark of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and a leading cause of hospitalization. Pain management relies heavily on opioids, but repeated exposure carries risks including tolerance, hyperalgesia, and adverse effects. Ketamine, an NMDA receptor antagonist, has emerged as an adjunctive agent with potential opioid-sparing effects (1–3,7). Systematic reviews suggest ketamine may reduce pain scores and possibly opioid requirements, though pooled results remain inconsistent (5,6,8). While ketamine + opioid regimens have been studied, the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of ketamine combined with non-opioid analgesics for VOC remain largely unknown. Understanding the comparative effectiveness of these approaches is …

Comparative Efficacy Of Intravenous Ketamine And Lidocaine Infusions For Pain Management In Sickle Cell Vaso-Occlusive Crisis (Voc), Akhil Tumpudi Md May 2026

Comparative Efficacy Of Intravenous Ketamine And Lidocaine Infusions For Pain Management In Sickle Cell Vaso-Occlusive Crisis (Voc), Akhil Tumpudi Md

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary hemoglobin disorder characterized by vaso-occlusion and recurrent acute painful crises, which are the leading cause of hospitalization in affected individuals (1,2). Opioids remain the primary treatment for vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) pain but are associated with adverse effects, tolerance, and risk of dependence, prompting investigation into opioid-sparing adjuncts (1,2). Intravenous ketamine, an NMDA receptor antagonist, has shown modest opioid reduction in randomized and observational studies, though pain score improvements are inconsistent (3–6). Intravenous lidocaine, a sodium channel blocker, has also demonstrated potential opioid-sparing effects in retrospective cohorts with limited evidence of analgesic superiority (7–9). …

Learning From Our Dental Colleagues: A Brief Review Of Counter-Stimulation To Reduce Procedural Pain In Emergency Medicine Mechanisms, Existing Evidence, And A Pragmatic Research Agenda, James Espinosa, Neal Appelstein, Alan Lucerna May 2026

Learning From Our Dental Colleagues: A Brief Review Of Counter-Stimulation To Reduce Procedural Pain In Emergency Medicine Mechanisms, Existing Evidence, And A Pragmatic Research Agenda, James Espinosa, Neal Appelstein, Alan Lucerna

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Counter-stimulation techniques such as tapping, pressure, vibration, and tissue shaking are commonly observed in dental practice during administration of local anesthetic nerve blocks. Although not systematically described in the Emergency Medicine literature, individual clinicians may employ tactile counter-stimulation techniques during needle-based procedures. The practice remains under-theorized and under-studied within the Emergency Medicine literature. This brief review synthesizes mechanistic neurobiology—including segmental gate control theory (Melzack & Wall, 1965), descending inhibitory modulation, and attentional salience models—with evidence from dental and needle-procedure research. We propose a practical taxonomy of counter-stimulation techniques applicable to Emergency Medicine and identify gaps in the current literature. Finally, …
