Early-Term Abortion Bans And Sex Selection After Dobbs V Jackson, William Jergins, Xin Liang Brown May 2026

Early-Term Abortion Bans And Sex Selection After Dobbs V Jackson, William Jergins, Xin Liang Brown

Faculty Scholarship

Following the 2022 US Supreme Court decision Dobbs v Jackson, many states adopted early-term abortion (ETA) bans that prohibit abortions before the age of viability and often before sex determination is technologically feasible. We analyze the effect of ETA bans on the sex ratio at birth among first-generation Chinese, Korean, and Indian (CKI) immigrants using difference-in-differences and triple differences methodolo- gies. While our estimates across higher parity children sometimes indicate a decrease in the sex ratio at birth, they are also generally small and statistically insignificant, which is consistent with continued access to sex selection under ETA bans. In contrast, …

Liquid Fire Accelerants' Effect On Blood Detectability, Genniltza Ramirez May 2026

Liquid Fire Accelerants' Effect On Blood Detectability, Genniltza Ramirez

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Five liquid fire accelerants were studied in their effects on blood detection in attempts to yield presumptive accelerant indicators to benefit fire scene investigators. The experiment involved burning different accelerant types via a 1:1 pig blood and accelerant ratio on cloth squares in trials of three, and then presumptively testing for blood using luminol. Luminol was selected for its sensitivity, subjectivity, and previous use in arson fire and thermal studies. For this study, accelerants were determined to have positive presumptive blood detection if detectable by camera for documentation. Presumptive blood detection of the accelerants resulted in: paint thinner with detection …

Understanding Behavioral And Representational Divergences Of Humans And Machines, Thomas Lasman Botch May 2026

Understanding Behavioral And Representational Divergences Of Humans And Machines, Thomas Lasman Botch

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Human behavior and cognition are strikingly variable: people differ from one another in their preferences and abilities, and even from themselves across situations. Yet this diversity arises from common neural machinery shaped by the complex environments humans inhabit. A central objective of cognitive neuroscience is to understand how this varied experience emerges from interactions between brains, agents, and environments. In this dissertation, I argue that comparing behavior and neural computation across humans, artificial systems, and contexts is essential for understanding the flexibility of human cognition. Across three chapters, I use this comparative approach to examine how the rich, multimodal contexts …

Toward Autonomous Wireless Networks: Spatio-Temporal Prediction Via Physics-Aware Generative Ai Models, Rahul Gulia May 2026

Toward Autonomous Wireless Networks: Spatio-Temporal Prediction Via Physics-Aware Generative Ai Models, Rahul Gulia

Theses

The realization of fully autonomous Industry 4.0 environments depends on wireless networks that are not merely connected, but predictively aware—capable of anticipating channel degradation before it disrupts mission-critical operations. In dynamic industrial environments such as automated warehouses, radio frequency propagation is governed by dense metallic infrastructure, continuously moving obstacles, and frequent line-of-sight to non-line-of-sight transitions that render the channel non-stationary and spatiotemporally complex. Conventional approaches face a fundamental dichotomy: deterministic simulators such as ray-tracing and NS-3 achieve high physical fidelity but require up to 38 hours to generate a single high-resolution SINR heatmap, making real-time adaptation computationally infeasible; empirical and …

Research Progress On Detection Technologies For Florfenicol Residues In Animal-Derived Foods, Hu Xiaofei, Ge Mengjun, Wang Yao, Cai Wenjin, Xing Guangxui May 2026

Research Progress On Detection Technologies For Florfenicol Residues In Animal-Derived Foods, Hu Xiaofei, Ge Mengjun, Wang Yao, Cai Wenjin, Xing Guangxui

Food and Machinery

As a broad-spectrum antibiotic, florfenicol is widely used in livestock, poultry and aquaculture. Due to the unregulated use by some enterprises, a large amount of florfenicol residue exists in animal-derived foods. When florfenicol enters the human body through the food chain, it can cause gastrointestinal discomfort, intoxication, and even aplastic anemia. To minimize the effects of florfenicol residues and derivatives in food on human beings, many countries have set strict limits for maximum florfenicol residues in food. Therefore, this paper summarizes the detection methods for florfenicol established in recent years and gives an outlook on their development trends.

Food and Machinery

Considerable progress has been made in the research and construction of regional public brands for agricultural products. After experiencing several models such as the three-tier structure of "city, county, and enterprise", a brand structure based on the four tiers of "city, county, town, and enterprise" has emerged, and it has further evolved into a holistic regional public brand model that encompasses multiple industrial elements such as agriculture, light industry, cultural tourism, health care, and cultural creativity. However, during the development process, there are still problems such as inter-level and intra-level resource incoordination among brands at all levels, as well as …

Einstein Health Papers

PURPOSE: Median nerve (MN) block under local anesthesia at the wrist is commonly performed but can be limited by anatomic variation, particularly absence of the palmaris longus tendon. This study investigates a novel trans-flexor carpi radialis (trans-FCR) technique for MN anesthesia that uses the flexor carpi radialis (FCR) tendon as a consistent surface landmark.

METHODS: Fourteen fresh frozen upper extremity cadaver specimens were used. A 25-gauge needle was inserted through the FCR sheath approximately 4 cm proximal to the wrist crease in a transverse fashion, angled approximately 0° to the vertical and parallel to the wrist crease. The trans-FCR technique …

Between Tents And Concrete: Rethinking Displacement Space In Haiti, Korine Dorval May 2026

Between Tents And Concrete: Rethinking Displacement Space In Haiti, Korine Dorval

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Haiti is not an anomaly; it is a case study. Since the 2010 earthquake, displacement has not resolved but compounded, layered beneath successive crises of political instability, gang violence, and natural disaster. As of 2025, 1.4 million people remain without homes, many of them inheriting a life between tents and concrete that was never meant to last this long. Yet responses remain trapped in the logic of emergency. To live between tents and concrete is to exist in suspended uncertainty where children grow up without an address and community forms despite the design, not because of it. These camps were …

Effects Of Recurving Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclones On Downstream Ridges Over Pacific-Western North America, Xiaoyu Bai, Dmitri A. Kalashnikov, Paul Loikith, Siiri Bigalke, Alex Mitchell, Mingfang Ting, Lance F. Bosart, Deepti Singh

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recurving tropical cyclones (TC) in the Western North Pacific can affect the atmospheric circulation over Pacific‐Western North America (PWNA) via interactions with the midlatitude circulation. Using reanalysis and tropical cyclone best‐track data, we examine how recurving TCs that make extratropical transition modulate 500‐hPa ridge characteristics over PWNA during the peak (June‐September) and late (October–December) seasons. TCs recurving at lower latitudes are associated with more intense and poleward‐centered ridges relative to TCs recurving at higher latitudes, and TCs that recurve farther west are associated with relatively westward‐centered ridges. Characteristics of the prevailing midlatitude flow such as its amplitude and positioning relative …
