Concepts In Animal Parasitology, Chapter 63: Siphonaptera Latreille, 1825 (Order): Fleas [Arthropoda], Marcela Lareschi
Concepts in Animal Parasitology
An overview of fleas, order Siphonaptera Latreille, 1825, the adults of which are highly specialized holometabolous arthropods adapted to parasitic life and are morphologically very different from other insects. Fleas are parasites of birds and mammals, but their greatest specific richness is associated with rodents. There are nearly 3,000 species and subspecies placed in 19 families that are currently known worldwide. Includes discussion of the general morphology of the imago, larva, pupa, and eggs, their morphological adaptation to parasitism, phylogeny, systematics, taxonomy, geographic distribution, host associations, biology, reproduction, and medical and veterinary importance.

The Influence Of Transfer Distance And Pace Of Work On Foot Positioning Strategies And Low Back Loading In A Manual Material Handling Task, Jasmin Vallée Marcotte, Xavier Robert-Lachaine, Antoine Muller, Denys Denis, Hakim Mecheri, André Plamondon, Philippe Corbeil
Études primaires
Foot positioning strategies are a key parameter in manual materials handling. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of transfer distance, pace and foot positioning on low back loading. Sixteen handlers performed a free handling task with conditions of pace (self-selected and 25% faster), distance (1.5 m, 1.0 m and 0.5 m), height (near-ground and above-waist levels), and mass (10 kg and 20 kg). A linear mixed model was used to evaluate the effects of mass, distance, pace and height on foot positioning occurrences. A non-parametric test (nparLD) was used to evaluate the effects of Pace × …

Études primaires
Developing advanced materials with antibacterial and antifouling activities offers an adequate protection solution against surface bacterial contamination—a common cause of infection threatening human health. The current work reports the preparation of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) microfiber membranes decorated with photoactive Ag-TiO2 nanoparticles using electrospinning coupled with dip-coating methods. The decoration of Ag-TiO2 nanoparticles strongly enhances the antibacterial properties of prepared membranes, particularly under light illumination, thanks to their photocatalytic activity. The best-performing sample exhibits potent antibacterial efficiency exceeding 99% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis after 3 and 1 h of exposure to low-power commercial LED light, respectively. The prepared samples also …

An Analysis Based On Québec Administrative Data], Jaunathan Bilodeau, Martin Lebeau, Marc-Antoine Busque, Daniel Côté
Études primaires
The integration of immigrants into the Quebec labour market raises significant issues regarding workplace safety. The aim of this article is to (l) compare the risk of all accepted work accidents and serious accepted accidents between immigrants and non-immigrants in Quebec, and (2) examine differences in accident risk by occupational category and sex. An unprecedented matching of 3 administrative databases identified 9,783 immigrants among the 82,704 accepted accident cases in 2016. Negative binomial regressions reveal that immigrants admitted for less than five years face a higher risk of accidents compared to non-immigrants. Analyses of serious accidents and models stratified by …

Factors Influencing Metal Concentrations In Hair And Nails During Longitudinal Follow-Up Of Apprentice Welders, Jairo Buitrago-Cortes, Philippe Sarazin, Denis Dieme, Naïma El Majidi, Michèle Bouchard
Études primaires
The aim of this study was to determine factors influencing observed increased metal biomarkers of exposure levels in a group of 116 Quebec apprentice welders during a longitudinal follow-up of exposure. Analysis of 14 metals was carried out in hair, fingernail, and toenail samples taken from participants over the course of their welding curriculum at 6 different times. Personal and socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyle habits, and other potential confounding factors were documented by questionnaire. Multivariate linear mixed-effect models were used to assess main predictors of metal concentrations in each biological matrix including increasing time of exposure throughout the curriculum (defined as …

Concepts in Animal Parasitology
Chapter 69 in Concepts in Animal Parasitology, S. L. Gardner and S. A. Gardner, editors. 2024. Zea Books, Lincoln, Nebraska, United States
Introduction
Parasitism, in this chapter, is defined as “a close association of two organisms, in which one—the parasite—depends on the other—the host—deriving some benefit from it. The benefit is often food” (Rohde, 2005b). Many bacteria, viruses, and fungi are parasitic but usually not studied by parasitologists sensu stricto; they are the domain of microbiologists. Parasites as defined here do not always harm their host; the border between so-called genuine parasites and other symbionts such as commensals is often …

Concepts In Animal Parasitology, Chapter 13: Myxozoa (Subphylum), Terrence L. Miller
Concepts in Animal Parasitology
Recent phylogenetic and protein expression analyses have revealed the diverse group of obligate endoparasites of the subphylum Myxozoa are morphologically simplified, although highly specialized, cnidarians. Covered here are the classification and host associations of these animals, life cycle stages, infection dynamics, diagnostics, and the effect on aquatic host animal health, including whirling disease.
