Food As Freedom In The 1798 Rebellion, Lorna Carney May 2026

Food As Freedom In The 1798 Rebellion, Lorna Carney

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper draws out the tension between the well-fed leadership of the 1798 rebellion versus reports of hungry reality for poorer rebels. Readers of the unabridged diaries of Theobald Wolfe Tone must be struck by how often the man talks about what he ate, when he ate it and who he ate it with. Emerging from the coffee houses and dining clubs of Dublin and Belfast, the prosperous members of the professional classes and minor gentry who made up the leadership of the United Irishmen spent a good deal of their time around the table discussing the application of the …

Hands To Work, Hearts To Hope: Mutual Aid And The Re- Embodiment Of Care In An Age Of Crisis, April Mcgreger

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Mutual aid and charity groups often pay attention to the tangible results of their work for the groups serviced but too often ignore the benefits of the work to the workers themselves. Using the experience of the People’s Kitchen in Philadelphia, the author details the diversity of experiences of kitchen workers and some of the benefits of volunteering. Methodology uses surveys and self- ethnology and contributes to new areas of research.

Feeding A Colony: Crisis, Adaptation, And The Making Of A Wartime Food Economy In Cyprus (1939-1945), Evangelia Matthopoulou, Petroula Hadjittofi May 2026

Feeding A Colony: Crisis, Adaptation, And The Making Of A Wartime Food Economy In Cyprus (1939-1945), Evangelia Matthopoulou, Petroula Hadjittofi

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

The outbreak of the WWII severely disrupted Mediterranean maritime transport, curtailing the inflow of foodstuffs and processed commodities to small import- dependent economies. This paper examines British Cyprus as a case study, arguing that wartime supply chain crisis prompted both policy and entrepreneurial shifts that not only safeguarded subsistence, but also laid foundations for postwar development. Colonial emergency measures (rationing, price controls, and food campaigns) sought to manage trade bottlenecks, while British policy actively redirected demand toward locally processed food products. This turn to import substitution was reinforced by Cyprus’s incorporation into the Middle East Supply Center in Cairo, which …

Superman And Coca-Cola, Karen Pepper May 2026

Superman And Coca-Cola, Karen Pepper

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

One crisis we currently face is the rising incidence of diabetes worldwide, arguably due to the inclusion of sugar, in one form or another, in nearly all processed foods. Superman and Coca Cola, two symbols prominent in the American cultural landscape, suggest an association of sugar consumption and power. Indeed, sweetness appeals to us both as a taste and as a concept, and sugar, accordingly, is often marketed not as nourishing but as empowering. Superman may seem far removed from discussions of food. However, the possibility of acquiring greater-than-human strength was apparently uppermost in the minds of mid-twentieth century Americans, …

Toddy, Tea, And Tapioca: Food, Famine, And The Moral Reordering Of Public Space In Malabar (Kerala), 1900- 1965, Mallory Rose Cerkleski May 2026

Toddy, Tea, And Tapioca: Food, Famine, And The Moral Reordering Of Public Space In Malabar (Kerala), 1900- 1965, Mallory Rose Cerkleski

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper examines how public food and drink spaces in early twentieth-century Malabar functioned as critical infrastructures of everyday subsistence as well as sociability. It argues that toddy shops, beyond sites of intoxication, might have provided low-cost nutrition, informal credit, and cross-caste interaction for segments of the labouring poor. Colonial excise policies and temperance movements progressively narrowed these spaces, contributing to the rise of tea shops aligned with reformist ideals of respectable public consumption. While tea shops fostered political discussion and vernacular modernity, they could have been less reliable as nutritional buffers, especially during the food crises of the 1940s. …

The Taste Of Resilience In Bread, Beer And Ashes At Tell Bazi (Syria), Marie Hopwood May 2026

The Taste Of Resilience In Bread, Beer And Ashes At Tell Bazi (Syria), Marie Hopwood

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Nuances of ancient life choices do not leave traces that can be excavated and quantified. Even with written language, not all thoughts made it to tablet, and not all tablets survive. What archaeologists can see from millennia past are points of intense change, sometimes resulting from crisis. People cope with crisis through traditions and rituals designed to help them transition through the upheaval and loss into a new future when happiness can be found. Around 1350BCE the people of Tell Bazi (Syria) faced annihilation likely from the Hittites who left a swath of ravaged towns and displaced populations in their …

“You Are Needed In The Fields!”: Representing The “Land Girls” In Second World War Britain, Tricia Cusack May 2026

“You Are Needed In The Fields!”: Representing The “Land Girls” In Second World War Britain, Tricia Cusack

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

As German submarines targeted merchant ships bringing food to Britain in the Second World War, home production had to be increased. During this period, the government maintained a condition of “total war,” that is, everyone was required to contribute to keeping the country going and to achieving victory. According to the historian Guy de la Bédoyère, “the British people experienced unprecedented Government intervention. Every aspect of daily life was regulated.” In theory, this push for national solidarity involved a levelling of class and gender differences. Certainly, it brought women into new prominence. When male labourers on farms, in orchards and …

The Pub “Crisis” And The Future Of Alcohol-Related “Third Spaces”: A Cross-National Survey, Perry Share May 2026

The Pub “Crisis” And The Future Of Alcohol-Related “Third Spaces”: A Cross-National Survey, Perry Share

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Across a range of countries, pubs and cognate drinking venues are shrinking in number and being reimagined in function. This paper examines the contemporary “pub crisis” in Ireland, Britain, Hungary, Japan, South Korea, the Netherlands and Australia, drawing on academic, policy, media and industry materials gathered during late 2025 and early 2026. It argues that, despite different national histories and drinking cultures, similar pressures recur: rising costs, labour shortages, changing alcohol consumption, weakened after-work drinking norms, and redevelopment pressures, with rural and peripheral areas often most exposed. The paper treats pubs not simply as licensed businesses, but as contested forms …

The Eradication Of Manual Hop Picking As A Rural Tradition Due To The Brewing And Economic Crisis In Post-War Britain, Judith Boyle May 2026

The Eradication Of Manual Hop Picking As A Rural Tradition Due To The Brewing And Economic Crisis In Post-War Britain, Judith Boyle

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Manual hop-picking during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries represented far more than a form of agricultural labour; it constituted a significant seasonal activity that connected urban working-class communities with rural economies. In the hop-growing regions of Kent, in particular, hop-picking developed into an important cultural tradition that served simultaneously as seasonal employment, a temporary escape from urban life, a working holiday, and a source of supplementary income for working-class families. However, the rationalisation and mechanisation of agriculture, combined with the brewing industry’s increasing emphasis on efficiency and cost reduction within a changing British economic and consumer environment, contributed …

Tables Of Power: Ritualised Feasting And Political Negotiation In Irish History, Elizabeth Waters, Elaine Mahon May 2026

Tables Of Power: Ritualised Feasting And Political Negotiation In Irish History, Elizabeth Waters, Elaine Mahon

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper examines feasting in two specific contexts: the sagas of the early Irish medieval period, and the diplomatic history of the Irish state. Far from being decorative or incidental, feasting is shown to be a system of commensal politics that converts uncertainty into opportunity as well as symbolic capital. In the examples explored, the shared meal is shown to be not just a convivial gathering but a means through which authority is demonstrated, crises negotiated or averted, and relationships renewed.

“Read This - And Keep It Carefully”: Emergency Recipes In Ireland (1939–1945), Gary Thompson May 2026

“Read This - And Keep It Carefully”: Emergency Recipes In Ireland (1939–1945), Gary Thompson

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Cookbooks published at a time of armed conflict contain practical advice on managing food shortages paired with patriotic nationalistic zeal. This paper examines the advice given to Irish households on cookery and household management in the pages of cookbooks and pamphlets published between 1939 and 1945, a period of political, economic and food supply upheaval colloquially referred to as The Emergency in Ireland. The recipes, advertisements and household advice reflect a growing crisis when the outcome of war was unknown to authors, while, in the domestic sphere, food and fuel shortages were increasingly impacting the home cook. Official food supply …

The Model Constitutional Convention: A Simulated Exercise In Constitutional Reform, Stefanie A. Lindquist, Neta Borshansky May 2026

The Model Constitutional Convention: A Simulated Exercise In Constitutional Reform, Stefanie A. Lindquist, Neta Borshansky

Florida Law Review

This Essay explains how the Model Constitutional Convention (MCC) was structured and the amendments it produced. It reflects on the impact the event had on the participants and on how a national movement to host MCCs across the country might unfold. It concludes with thoughts about how the MCC might be improved in future years to simulate more closely the reality of legal, social, and political conditions in the United States—conditions that have the potential to shape constitutional reform efforts.

Wealth Taxes Under The Constitution: An Originalist Analysis, David M. Schizer, Steven Gow Calabresi May 2026

Wealth Taxes Under The Constitution: An Originalist Analysis, David M. Schizer, Steven Gow Calabresi

Florida Law Review

A federal wealth tax is high on the wish list of progressives, but is it constitutional? This Article shows that under the original public meaning of the Constitution, a wealth tax is a “direct tax” that must be apportioned. This means that the percentage of revenue collected in each state must match its percentage of the population. For instance, if two states both have three percent of the population, each must provide three percent of the revenue. This leads to an unappealing outcome: if one state is less wealthy, it needs a higher tax rate to supply its share.

This Comment was on the importance of state constitutional conventions, and the author took advantage of the topic to explain why it so important to imagine a new national constitutional convention because of the patent problems of the United States Constitution.

Predicting The Outcome Of Ischemic Hepatitis With Real-Patient Data Using Machine Learning Tools, Christiana Beard, Madison Utterback, Olcay Akman, Priya Kohli, William M. Lee, Aditi Ghosh May 2026

Predicting The Outcome Of Ischemic Hepatitis With Real-Patient Data Using Machine Learning Tools, Christiana Beard, Madison Utterback, Olcay Akman, Priya Kohli, William M. Lee, Aditi Ghosh

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Ischemic hepatitis (IH) results from shock-related conditions that impair oxygenated blood flow to the liver, causing hepatocyte death. Diagnosis relies largely on clinical history due to the absence of specific diagnostic tests and limited ability to predict outcomes. This study applies machine learning methods to real-world IH patient data to improve outcome prediction. Biomedical indicators analyzed include creatinine, international normalized ratio (INR), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), and bilirubin. Data were collected from multiple U.S. centers through the Acute Liver Failure Study Group (ALFSG), a multicenter network focused on this rare condition. We implemented logistic regression, regression tree methods …

Distance Calculations Of Faint Dwarf Galaxies Through Surface Brightness Fluctuations, Blake A. Richesin, Guinevere Herron, Burçin Mutlu-Pakdil

Wetterhahn Science Symposium Posters

This study aims to test the effectiveness of the surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) technique in determining the distance to three distinct galaxy targets. The targets were dwarf galaxies Tucana B, Kamino, and Hedgehog. The technique used image masking, Sérsic profiles, and convolving with point spread functions (PSF). The study showed that redder, quenched galaxies are prime candidates for the SBF technique, while bluer, star-forming galaxies are more difficult to constrain the distance of.

Pixel-Level Fiber Stratification: Quantitative Imaging Analysis Of Pigmented Lesion Morphology, Alexia R. Gerogiannis, Caroline R. Saint James

Wetterhahn Science Symposium Posters

Using a combined two-photon excitation fluorescence (TPEF) and second-harmonic generation (SHG) approach, our research seeks to further the quantification of skin components in a quest toward diagnostic tools with higher accuracy and reduced invasiveness for patients. Images are taken both ex vivo and in vivo, of healthy and malignant tissues, with a 600 × 600 micron field of view. We demonstrate how computational analysis can effectively exploit signals emitted by skin to provide diagnostic insight.

Intersectionality And Insurgent Citizenship: Women Of Color Feminism In 1970s New York City, Genevieve Bonner Davis May 2026

Intersectionality And Insurgent Citizenship: Women Of Color Feminism In 1970s New York City, Genevieve Bonner Davis

Dissertations and Theses

Not since the phrase "Ain't I a Woman" has African American women's intellectual leadership and insight been as visible and influential as the contemporary concept of intersectionality. Like Sojourner Truth's iconic intellectual intervention in the anti-slavery movement, intersectionality has experienced a similar trajectory of dissolution, distortion, appropriation, and popularization. Since its articulation by Black legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, intersectionality theory has had a bumpy road to its buzzy, if controversial, status in the firmament of twenty-first-century political thought.

This thesis traces the origins of intersectionality theory through three distinct but intertwined phases. Phase one is the genealogy of …

Measuring Modulation Envelope Of A Pound Drever Hall Feedback Loop, Josh S. Lee May 2026

Measuring Modulation Envelope Of A Pound Drever Hall Feedback Loop, Josh S. Lee

Physics and Astronomy Undergraduate Senior Theses

From improving qubit readout to real world medical technology, fast and ultrasensitive electrometry has many real world applications. The primary goal of the overarching project is to improve ultrasensitive charge detection using methods involving cavity-embedded Cooper pair transistor (cCPT) devices. This project hopes to accomplish this by using the gate-tunability of the cCPT to reduce the 1/f-noise, a type of low-frequency noise that can interfere with the cCPT’s measurement operability. By using a Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) feedback loop-inspired scheme that can adjust the cCPT gate, this project hopes to improve the stability of the cCPT’s resonant frequency against the 1/f-noise, in …

The Effect Of The Chemical And Microbiological Structure Of Biofilms On The Growth Of Oyster Spats In The Hudson River, June L. Rahman May 2026

The Effect Of The Chemical And Microbiological Structure Of Biofilms On The Growth Of Oyster Spats In The Hudson River, June L. Rahman

Student Theses and Dissertations

Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are sessile suspension feeding bivalves that improve water quality through filtration and reef formation, making them crucial to the health oftheir native ecosystems. Establishing oyster habitats is a priority in Hudson River restoration efforts following significant population declines due to over harvesting, habitat loss, and pollution. Oyster spat production and attachment are influenced by biofilms; however, it is not well known how biofilm properties, such as bacterial taxonomic composition and EPS content, affect oyster larval attachment in the Hudson River. We hypothesized that intertidal surfaces, which are more exposed sunlight, would develop photosynthetic biofilms that enhance oyster …

Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scoring Implementation In A Critical Access Hospital, Jasmine A. Hobbs May 2026

Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scoring Implementation In A Critical Access Hospital, Jasmine A. Hobbs

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Mechanically ventilated patients who are boarding in rural emergency departments face an increased risk of inconsistent sedation management due to the lack of standardized protocols and the extended transfer times to higher levels of care. The variability in sedation practices can lead to both under- and over-sedation, which negatively affects patient comfort, safety, and clinical outcomes. Research suggests that sedation protocols incorporating the Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale (RASS) can shorten mechanical ventilation duration and improve clinical outcomes. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a targeted educational intervention on improving nursing knowledge and comfort with the RASS …

Promoting Foot Care Health In Individuals Recovering From Addiction: A Collaborative And Community-Based Nursing Intervention, Erika Frahm, Kayla Goodrow, Zoe Hofmaister, Jaycie Inouye, Shuma Katori, Caleb James Maza, Fauzia Tomno

Nursing Leadership in Community Engagement Projects

As housing instability and homelessness increase in King County, many basic needs, including foot care, are often unmet. According to a study on foot health among vulnerable populations, individuals may be unable to perform proper foot care due to prioritization of basic daily needs over preventative care (Razmus, 2023). Research indicates that foot-related complications are highly prevalent among vulnerable populations and may worsen without timely intervention (Haughton et al., 2026). Barriers such as fear of stigmatization and untreated mental health conditions can also limit access to healthcare services (Kimball et al., 2023). These statistics inspired the purpose of this community …
