Graphic Communication
The GrC Student Advisory Board developed a DEI Committee consisting of student members and faculty advisors to amplify resources and equal opportunities for the department in the Spring of 2023. For the Graphic Communication major at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, having a DEI Committee is valuable for several reasons, particularly given the context of Cal Poly lacking diversity. In fact, Cal Poly is considered the only predominantly white institution of the 23 CSU campuses, and also the whitest public university in California. A DEI Committee in GrC significantly contributes to creating a more inclusive, productive, and innovative environment in …

Background: Pulmonary artery embolus is a rare complication following gunshot wounds that creates a unique and serious challenge for trauma surgeons. While the majority of bullets that embolize through the vascular system end in the peripheral circulation, approximately one-third enter the central venous circulation. Case Report: We present the case of a bullet embolus to the left pulmonary artery following gunshot wounds to the right chest and the abdomen, with the abdominal ballistic traversing the liver before entering the vena cava and embolizing. The patient’s course was complicated by the development of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome that was successfully …

Invisible Inequalities: Barriers, Challenges, And Opportunities, Hari Bapuji, Gokhan Ertug, Vivek Soundarajan, Jason D. Shaw
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Inequality is a grand challenge of our times, and management researchers have responded by examining the relationship between business and societal economic inequalities. This research has enhanced our understanding of the nature, sources, and consequences of inequalities, as well as identified actions to address them. However, this effort has predominantly revolved around visible inequalities. We seek to direct greater scholarly attention to invisible inequalities – uneven possession of and access to resources and opportunities to engage in value creation, appropriation, and distribution based on attributes and characteristics that are not readily apparent or noticeable. Expanding the scope of investigations to …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In Spain, approximately 75% of toy sales are concentrated at Christmas (Asociación Española de Fabricantes de Juguetes, 2022). Taking into account this data, it is inevitable to talk about the importance of the Three Wise Men. Every year, boys and girls write their letters with the illusion of waking up on January 6 with gifts in their living rooms. In this context, it is opportune to analyze these letters in order to know the nature of the children's requests in their letters to the Three Wise Men. For this reason, the present work offers a content analysis of 417 letters, …

Clinical Characteristics Of People With Intellectual Disability Admitted To Hospital With Constipation: Identifying Possible Specific High‐Risk Factors, R Laugharne, M Wilcock, J Rees, D Wainwright, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
Background People with intellectual disabilities (ID) die on an average 20 years earlier to the general population. They have higher rates of multimorbidity and polypharmacy. Around 25% of people with ID report chronic constipation. The England Learning Disabilities Mortality Review found that nearly 25% of deaths identified constipation as a long-term health problem. However, the likely risk factors for constipation related harm are poorly enumerated. We sought to identify possible specific high-risk factors by examining the clinical characteristics of people with ID admitted to hospital with constipation. Methods Data of people with ID admitted with constipation in two general hospitals …

Background. Most interventions to prevent foot ulcers in people with diabetes do not seek to reverse the foot abnormalities that led to the ulcer. Foot‐ankle exercise programs target these clinical and biomechanical factors, such as protective sensation and mechanical stress. Multiple RCTs exist investigating the effectiveness of such programs, but these have never been summarised in a systematic review and meta‐analysis. Methods. We searched the available scientific literature in PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane databases and trial registries for original research studies on foot‐ankle exercise programs for people with diabetes at risk of foot ulceration. Both controlled and non‐controlled studies were …

Applications Of Information Literacy To Teaching Independent Music Analysis, Katrina Roush
Applications Of Information Literacy To Teaching Independent Music Analysis, Katrina Roush
School of Music Faculty Publications
Undergraduate and graduate music students learn many tools beneficial for music analysis, and they practice applying these tools to music in their music theory classes. However, they often struggle to perform useful analysis on their own without the guidance of an instructor. They can have trouble understanding that analysis should communicate their personal interpretation of a work, and they may not realize that independent analysis usually requires some preparatory work (analytical research),such as discovering if others have analyzed the work and learning new analytical methods. This article shows that there is a strong connection between various steps in the music-analytical …
False Conscience: Sustainability And Smart Evolution—Between Law And Power, Ugo Mattei
False Conscience: Sustainability And Smart Evolution—Between Law And Power, Ugo Mattei
Faculty Scholarship
The contribution describes the legal phenomenon as a playing field characterized by a progressive regression of the law, understood as a sovereign will from top to bottom, both in the vision of formalist legal positivisms in continental Europe and in realist terms, in the United States. Soft law represents the main strategy to subordinate the law to the interests of the economy, elasticizing environmental law, making it favorable to the market, reducing ecology to the simplistic metric of CO2 emissions. The consequence is a retreat of the statist vertical normativity of law which is not replaced by a de facto …

Bringing The Firepower: Examining Muzzle Energy And Caliber Of Ammunition In The Context Of Mass Shootings, Cody Jorgensen, Benjamin P. Comer
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations
Prior research focusing on mass shootings in the US has established the significant role of weapons in these events. Despite the extensive literature on the topic, minimal consideration has been given to the specific muzzle energy and caliber of ammunition used in these events and whether these factors influence the outcome of these shooting incidents. The current study examined the effect of muzzle energy and caliber of ammunition on the number of victims killed and injured in mass shootings. Analysis of The Violence Project (Version 6) mass shooting dataset indicated that the muzzle energy of the ammunition used in a …

Dirty Secret: The Laundering Of Foreign Arbitral Awards, Charles H. Brower Ii
UC Law Journal
This Article addresses an undertheorized but important topic: the laundering of foreign arbitral awards. Prevailing parties in foreign arbitrations often obtain judgments confirming their awards at the place of arbitration. Fifty years ago, the Second Circuit established the so-called “parallel entitlements” doctrine, pursuant to which prevailing parties can seek enforcement of the foreign award under federal law, or enforcement of the foreign confirmation judgment under state law, or both.
If an award faces obstacles to enforcement under the New York Convention or the Federal Arbitration Act, the prevailing party can still obtain enforcement of the confirmation judgment under the legal …
The Case For Downsizing The Corporate Attorney-Client Privilege, Elise Bernlohr Maizel
The Case For Downsizing The Corporate Attorney-Client Privilege, Elise Bernlohr Maizel
UC Law Journal
Privilege is a choice. In crafting evidentiary privileges, courts and policymakers have fashioned a rule that concedes that some things are more important than getting to the truth. Indeed, our entire law of privilege stems from the fact that society deems certain relationships important enough to protect their communications even from the truth-seeking process of litigation. The attorney-client relationship is a paradigmatic example. But something has gone seriously wrong with the law’s attempts to transplant protections for an intimate, confessional space for communications between an individual and their attorney onto “artificial creatures of the law”: the modern corporation.
Today’s corporate …
Born To Equality: Minor Children, Equal Protection, And State Laws Targeting Lgbtq+ Youth, Nicholas Serafin
Born To Equality: Minor Children, Equal Protection, And State Laws Targeting Lgbtq+ Youth, Nicholas Serafin
UC Law Journal
States throughout the country are targeting LGBTQ+ youth, singling out transgender youth in particular. Part I of this Article provides an overview of laws targeting LGBTQ+ youth, and argues that many of these laws express animus towards and impose a stigma upon LGBTQ+ minor children. Though they are distinct doctrines, the Court has interwoven animus and stigma- based arguments throughout its gay rights jurisprudence to protect LGBTQ+ individuals from state action that imposes dignitary harm. Laws targeting LGBTQ+ youth often evince the same irrational hostility and stigmatizing purpose that the Court rejected decades ago.
Historically the Court’s LGBTQ+ jurisprudence has …

Liquid biopsies have emerged as a promising and minimally invasive alternative to traditional tissue biopsies for detecting and monitoring cancer. Liquid biopsies offer a comprehensive analysis of cancer genetics and tumor burden by examining circulating cells and cell-derived analytes using a variety of assays, including conventional PCR methods and cutting-edge tools like long-read sequencing and nanotechnology. However, there are still some limitations and challenges that need to be overcome for their implementation in clinical routine, including the need for further research on their sensitivity and specificity, cost-effectiveness, standardization, and regulatory approval. Despite these challenges, liquid biopsies have the potential to …
