Schull, Rebecca, Negin Nader Bazrafkan

Bronx Jewish History Project

Rebecca Schull, born in 1929, recalls her early life in the Sholem Aleichem Houses in the Bronx where her family lived in the predominantly Jewish community. Her father was a lawyer who later worked for the American Technion Society, and her mother was a dietician raised in Tel Aviv, who studied quantity cooking at Columbia. Many members of her family were Zionists, her uncle was the artist Nachum Gutman and her grandfather the writer Simcha Ben Zion. She remembers the pleasant communal atmosphere of the Sholem Aleichem Houses, where socialism, communism and Yiddishism was commonplace. Her childhood was marked by …

Salt Water Exposure Exacerbates The Negative Response Of Phragmites Australis Haplotypes To Sea-Level Rise, Austin Lynn, Tracy Elsey-Quirk Mar 2024

Salt Water Exposure Exacerbates The Negative Response Of Phragmites Australis Haplotypes To Sea-Level Rise, Austin Lynn, Tracy Elsey-Quirk

Faculty Publications

The response of coastal wetlands to sea-level rise (SLR) largely depends on the tolerance of individual plant species to inundation stress and, in brackish and freshwater wetlands, exposure to higher salinities. Phragmites australis is a cosmopolitan wetland reed that grows in saline to freshwater marshes. P. australis has many genetically distinct haplotypes, some of which are invasive and the focus of considerable research and management. However, the relative response of P. australis haplotypes to SLR is not well known, despite the importance of predicting future distribution changes and understanding its role in marsh response and resilience to SLR. Here, we …

Advocating For Adolescent Sexual Minorities, Madeline Hawkins

South Carolina Association for Middle Level Education Journal

Sexual minority (gay, lesbian, and bisexual) adolescents experience bullying and mental health issues at higher rates than their heterosexual counterparts. It is important that teachers find ways to protect, support, and advocate for these students to prevent them from struggling academically and socially. Through the use of inclusive curricula, gay-straight alliances, and informal mentoring, educators can foster an environment of inclusion and respect for sexual minority students.

We provide novel evidence on how COVID-19 affected overall life satisfaction using a monthly longitudinal survey of middle-aged and older Singaporeans. We study how the subjective well-being of individuals evolves over the course of 18 months including the outbreak of the pandemic, the implementation of the lockdown and the spike of cases due to the delta variant in a country where COVID-19 is controlled in a sustained manner. Using an event-study design framework, we find large declines in overall life satisfaction in the lead-up to and following the lockdown. Fifteen months after the outbreak of the pandemic, and 13 months …

Interim Regret Minimization, Wei He, Jiangtao Li, Kexin Wang Mar 2024

Interim Regret Minimization, Wei He, Jiangtao Li, Kexin Wang

Research Collection School Of Economics

We consider a robust version of monopoly pricing when the seller only knows the bound on valuations and the mean of the distribution of the buyer’s value. The seller seeks to minimize interim regret, the forgone expected revenue due to not knowing the distribution of the buyer’s value. The optimal pricing policy randomizes over a range of prices; the support of the pricing policy is bounded away from zero.

Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) mitochondrial respiration was measured ex vivo from participants without a history of COVID (n = 19), with a history of COVID and full recovery (n = 20), and with PASC (n = 20). Mean mitochondrial basal respiration, ATP-linked respiration, maximal respiration, spare respiration capacity, ATP-linked respiration, and non-mitochondrial respiration were highest in COVID + PASC+ (p ≤ 0.04). Every unit increase in non-mitochondrial respiration, ATP-linked respiration, basal respiration, spare respiration capacity, and maximal respiration increased the predicted odds of PASC between 1 % and 6 %. Mitochondrial dysfunction in PBMCs may be contributing to the …

Prolonged ultraviolet exposure results in the formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) in RNA. Consequently, prebiotic photolesion repair mechanisms should have played an important role in the maintenance of the structural integrity of primitive nucleic acids. 2,6-Diaminopurine is a prebiotic nucleobase that repairs CPDs with high efficiency when incorporated into polymers. We investigate the electronic deactivation pathways of 2,6-diaminopurine-2′-deoxyribose and 9-methyl-2,6-diaminopurine in acetonitrile and aqueous solution to shed light on the photophysical and excited state properties of the 2,6-diaminopurine chromophore. Evidence is presented that both are photostable compounds exhibiting similar deactivation mechanisms upon the population of the S1(ππ* La) state …

Introduction

  • Communication relies heavily on both verbal and nonverbal cues, such as tone and pitch (LaPlante & Ambady, 2002).
  • In computer-mediated communication (CMC), users are forced to rely on textual paralingual cues (TPCs) to convey tone (Harris & Paradice, 2007).
  • TPCs such as the use of periods, emojis, or letter repetitions (Rodríguez-Hidalgo et al., 2017) have been shown to be associated with a change in perceived sincerity (Houghton et al., 2018), positive emotions (Riordan, 2017), or pitch changes (Kalman & Gergle, 2014), respectively.
  • The use of capital letters has been perceived as yelling or speaking at a louder volume (Heath, …

Customer attrition in the banking industry occurs when consumers quit using the goods and services offered by the bank for some time and, after that, end their connection with the bank. Therefore, customer retention is essential in today’s extremely competitive banking market. Additionally, having a solid customer base helps attract new consumers by fostering confidence and a referral from a current clientele. These factors make reducing client attrition a crucial step that banks must pursue. In our research, we aim to examine bank data and forecast which users will most likely discontinue using the bank’s services and become paying customers. …

Examining Reported Versus Actual Attendance In College Basketball Non-Conference Games: Do Scheduling Elements Make A Difference?, Nels Popp, Stephen Shapiro, Jason Simmons, Ryan Dastrup

Journal of Applied Sport Management

This study examines factors impacting sport attendance at non-conference NCAA Division I men’s college basketball games. Non-conference college basketball games are relatively unique because athletic department personnel control many of the scheduling variables related to event popularity, including opponent, game day, and start time. As such, it is valuable for administrators to know which elements might maximize event revenue. The current study is also unique because it examines both reported attendance (tickets disseminated) and actual attendance (tickets scanned at the venue). A total of 48 schools provided ticket scan rate data for their non-conference home basketball games over three seasons …

Cybersecurity education has grown exponentially to support the need for a skilled cybersecurity workforce. Further, capture-the-flag competitions have popularized cybersecurity by engaging and recruiting students while exposing them to cybersecurity workforce competencies. However, the heavy reliance on competition-based educational approaches may contribute to the lack of diversity in cybersecurity programs. Cybersecurity competitions are the primary catalyst to expose and recruit students from both high school and collegiate cybersecurity education programs. In response, we propose a collaborative, experiential learning approach that leverages hackable Internet of Things (IoT) toys as a pedagogical tool for cybersecurity education. We share our detailed design, activities, …

Baku Mathematical Journal

We prove upper bounds for Berezin symbols and Berezin numbers of operators, with a special emphasis on the quadratic weighted operator geometric mean. In particular, we prove some upper bounds for Berezin symbols and Berezin numbers of some self-adjoint operators on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over some suitable sets. Moreover, we estimate the best possible constant in some generalized Hardy-Hilbert inequality for the series.
