Expanding Access To Undergraduate Higher Education For China's Ethnic Minority Populations, Yuqian Zhang, D. Eric Archer
Expanding Access To Undergraduate Higher Education For China's Ethnic Minority Populations, Yuqian Zhang, D. Eric Archer
Journal of Critical Global Issues
China has one of the world’s oldest and largest sets of minority affirmative action policies, which provide 125 million individuals from recognized ethnic minority groups with preferences in family planning, school admissions, employment, business financing and taxation, and financial subsidies. This paper aims to examine how China implements preferential policies for ethnic minority undergraduate applicants to its higher education institutions. Policies of preferential admissions in China are designed to compensate for inequalities in educational opportunity among different ethnic groups. This compensatory approach is based on the concept that equal treatment of differently situated groups may itself create inequality. Yet preferential …

Enhancing energy optimization is crucial for sustainable and smart environments such as smart cities, connected and urban buildings, and cognitive cities. Advanced communication systems and Internet of Things (IoT) sensor systems play a key role in enhancing energy efficiency by monitoring and controlling such ecosystems. In this article, we propose a reinforcement learning (RL) approach for optimizing the energy consumption of multipurpose buildings using the EnergyPlus simulation environment. Our RL algorithm uses the proximal policy optimization with clipping (PPO-Clip) for online training and also includes an offline pretraining model to improve the stability of the proposed algorithm. The observed states …

Design Of Protograph Ldpc-Coded Mimo-Vlc Systems With Generalized Spatial Modulation, Dai Lin, Fang Yi, Guan Yongliang, Mohsen Guizani
Machine Learning Faculty Publications
This paper investigates the bit-interleaved coded generalized spatial modulation (BICGSM) with iterative decoding (BICGSM-ID) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) visible light communications (VLC). In the BICGSM-ID scheme, the information bits conveyed by the signal-domain (SiD) symbols and the spatial-domain (SpD) light emitting diode (LED)index patterns are coded by a protograph low-density parity-check (P-LDPC) code. Specifically, we propose a signal-domain symbol expanding and re-allocating (SSER) method for constructing a type of novel generalized spatial modulation (GSM) constellations, referred to as SSERGSM constellations, so as to boost the performance of the BICGSM-ID MIMO-VLC systems. Moreover, by applying a modified PEXIT (MPEXIT) algorithm, we …

Librarians and archivists are often early adopters and experimenters with new technologies. Our field is also interested in critically engaging with technology, and we are well-positioned to be leaders in the slow and careful consideration of new technologies. Therefore, as librarians and archivists have begun using artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance library services, we also aim to interrogate the ethical issues that arise while using AI to enhance collection description and discovery and streamline reference services and teaching. The IMLS-funded Responsible AI in Libraries and Archives project aims to create resources that will help practitioners make ethical decisions when implementing …

Smart Cities And Aging Well: Exploring The Links Between Technological Models And Social Models For Promoting Daily Social Interaction For Geriatric Care, Jocelyne Kiss, Lindenwood University
Faculty Scholarship
The aging global population requires a new social model to meet the growing social, economic, and physical needs of seniors. Western social models need to be reconsidered in light of examples that support communal ways of living, which are sustainable through smart city design for more supportive geriatric care systems. To address the complex problems of geriatric care in this growing aging population with specific needs related to increased lifespan and limited financial resources, the use of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), should be considered. As retirement ages rise and funds for …

The Linnett Double Quartet (LDQ) (1) and Bohr Orbit Bonding (BOB) (2) methods were used to accurately represent the spin density distribution for superoxide (O2 -) and hydroperoxyl radical (HO2). These structural pictures were superimposed on the spin density plot produced by DFT. The Valency Interaction Formula (VIF) method (3) was also applied to these molecules and it matched the NBOs from NBO analysis of DFT results. The interaction between O2 - and H2O were analyzed and the stronger basicity of the beta-spin electrons of superoxide was identified by looking at the LDQ structure and confirmed with NBO analysis. The …

Investing In Climate: A Role For 'Sovereign Climate Funds', Marianna Kozintseva, Thierry Wizman
Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics
Efforts to address climate change have generally been focused on deploying mitigation technologies. However, it is adaptation technologies (and climate risk transfer) that will have to gain an increasing share of an investment pool dedicated to climate if human systems are to stay resilient to climate forces. Just like mitigation projects, adaptation projects have a strong public goods aspect, wherein public returns exceed private returns, and thus call for the state’s involvement. We argue that sovereign climate funds (SCFs) - new types of sovereign wealth funds with a climate investment mandate - can be critical purpose-built conduits especially for undertaking …

Machine Learning Application Of Generalized Gaussian Radial Basis Function And Its Reproducing Kernel Theory, Himanshu Singh
Math Faculty Publications and Presentations
Gaussian Radial Basis Function Kernels are the most-often-employed kernel function in artificial intelligence for providing the optimal results in contrast to their respective counterparts. However, our understanding surrounding the utilization of the Generalized Gaussian Radial Basis Function across different machine learning algorithms, such as kernel regression, support vector machines, and pattern recognition via neural networks is incomplete. The results delivered by the Generalized Gaussian Radial Basis Function Kernel in the previously mentioned applications remarkably outperforms those of the Gaussian Radial Basis Function Kernel, the Sigmoid function, and the ReLU function in terms of accuracy and misclassification. This article provides a …

Unfortunately, the biggest threat to software quality is developers’ disregard for code-writing standards, which leads to code smells. Despite their importance, code smells are not always identified during code review, creating a need for an empirical study to uncover vulnerabilities in code reviews. This study aimed to explore vulnerabilities in code reviews by examining the OpenStack project, Nova. After analyzing 4873 review comments, we identified 187 comments related to possible vulnerabilities, and a pilot study …
Blockchain Technology Trends In Different Sectors: A Review, Afaf M. Bugawa
Blockchain Technology Trends In Different Sectors: A Review, Afaf M. Bugawa
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Purpose: Currency transactions between companies or people are often controlled and characterized by third- party organizations. To make any such transaction or set up any digital payment transaction, a credit card company or bank acts as a middleman who helps to complete the transaction. The service provider charges a fee for this. Such transaction systems tend to be centralized, as the information involved in the process is managed and controlled by a third party, not the transacting parties. Blockchain technology innovates upon the transaction mechanism because it helps decentralize the environment by eliminating the third party in the transaction process. …

A Successful And Ideal Randomized Orthogonal Additive Response Model, Manzoor A. Khanday, Tanveer A. Tarray, S. Alkhazaleh, A. Ibrahim, Pratyay Das, Akansha Rawat
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
An innovative additive randomized response technique (RRT) has been put forth in this study. The proposed models characteristics have been researched. Theoretically, it has been demonstrated that under highly realistic circumstances, the recommended additive model is superior to the existing one. RRTs are used to lessen response biases in sensitive research question self-report surveys (e.g., on socially undesirable characteristics). Evidence suggests that they cannot entirely eradicate self-protective response mechanisms. There are RRTs made especially to assess the effectiveness of such tactics in order to solve this issue. Also provided in support of the current study are numerical examples.
