Disability Rates Among South Asian Immigrants In The U.S. Vary By Country Of Origin, Sobia Mushtaq, Marc A. Garcia

Population Health Research Brief Series

South Asian immigrants are often grouped together in U.S. health data, masking significant differences in health outcomes across subgroups. This brief uses data from the American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Public Use Microdata Sample (N = 6,643,738; 2020–2024) to describe disability rates among foreign-born adults from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh residing in the U.S. The authors find that while South Asian immigrants as a group have lower disability rates than U.S.-born adults, this average is driven largely by Indian immigrants, who make up about 79% of South Asians in the U.S. Among adults aged 65 and older, Bangladeshi immigrants have …

Distance And Trade Elasticity: The Red Sea Crisis As A Natural Experiment, Felix C. Feldman Jun 2026

Distance And Trade Elasticity: The Red Sea Crisis As A Natural Experiment, Felix C. Feldman

Economics Undergraduate Senior Theses

This paper exploits the 2023 Houthi attacks on shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the entrance to the Red Sea and the subsequent mass rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope to estimate modern-day elasticities with respect to effective trade cost. This event is unique among chokepoint disruptions as it did not lead to a complete blockage. Instead, many ships voluntarily rerouted away the area, but not all. This paper uses a structural approach to infer unobservable costs incurred by inframarginal Red Sea shippers. This paper combines a reduced-form gravity specification with a discrete route-choice model where ships select …

Testing The Moderating Effect Of Self-Compassion On The Relationship Between Perfectionism-Related Discrepancy And Perceived Social Support From Family, Marinne Hammond

Theses and Dissertations

Perfectionism involves an insistence on outstanding performance on tasks to an extreme level. More specifically, perfectionism-related discrepancy is when one subjectively sees a gap between their performance and their expectations for how they should perform. Perfectionism may be linked to mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and social disconnection. The perfectionism social disconnection model asserts that perfectionism can also lead to social withdrawal. Self-compassion involves the acceptance of imperfection; it has been associated with higher perceived social support and has also been shown to attenuate the relationship between perfectionism and psychological distress. This study aimed to further …

Positive Partner Support And Veteran Well-Being: How Capitalization Support Strengthens Military Veterans And Partnerships, Maryann Dona Samson

Dissertations and Theses

Among military veterans, the transition to civilian life is often marked by elevated distress and burnout, low job satisfaction, and a lack of perceived psychological safety. Social support, especially from intimate partners, can serve as a critical protective factor. While most support literature focuses on stress-buffering in adverse contexts, positive social support, such as responsiveness to shared positive experiences (i.e., capitalization support), is a powerful though understudied process. This dissertation investigates the role of partner capitalization support, which is the responsiveness shown by a romantic partner when one shares good news, as a source of stress reduction, resilience, and relational …

Why Am I Here? Individual, Organizational, & Societal Influences Of Employee Motives To Attend Voluntary Diversity Training And Their Effects On Training Outcomes, Henri T. Maindidze

Dissertations and Theses

Diversity training is a key part of diversity management efforts, but its effectiveness has repeatedly been called into question in both academic and applied spaces, leading many to question its utility. In the case of voluntary diversity training (VDT), where employees can opt in or out of participation, those motivated to attend might not be the ones who would most benefit from participating, thereby limiting the effectiveness of VDT for the organization. As a result, understanding the predictors and outcomes of employee motives to attend VDT can guide improved implementation and evaluation of VDT. Informed by self-determination theory and training …

Gnsi Decision Brief: Ours To Keep? Diego Garcia, Mauritius, The Uk, The Us And Security In The Indian Ocean, Guido Rossi

GNSI Decision Briefs

Defining Diego Garcia

Since the Pentagon does not disclose information about every US military installation, it is difficult to quantify exactly how many bases the United States has abroad. Among the currently estimated 750 “base sites” in over 80 countries, the Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia occupies a strategic location. This installation stands on the largest island of the Chagos archipelago, after which it is named. Located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Diego Garcia is not just the only US base in the region but is positioned to support US operations in the Indo-Pacific theater, the Middle East, …

In Vivo Orf Overexpression Screening Identifies Ccn4 As A Regulator Of Glioblastoma Growth Validated Across Multiple Models, Pushan Dasgupta

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Despite current multimodal therapies for glioblastoma (GBM), its prognosis remains grim. Thus, a tremendous need exists to identify new genetic drivers that may serve as potential therapeutic targets in glioblastoma (GBM). We describe an in vivo overexpression screening strategy to identify drivers of glioblastoma where we have leveraged TCGA datasets to conduct a functional genomics screen of prioritized open reading frames (ORFs) that are overexpressed and/or amplified in GBM. To interrogate these potential drivers within a more relevant physiological context, the screening was accomplished in vivo in an orthotopic patient-derived glioma stem-like cell (GSC) model. Among 5 positive "hits" from …

The Influence Of Gustav Holst's The Planets On The Music Of John Williams, Kara Lewis

Senior Honors Theses

Throughout his six-decade career in film music, John Williams has achieved incredible success. Yet, one of the most prominent criticisms of Williams’ work is that it borrows heavily from classical repertoire. It is common to read that Williams stole from composers such as Gustav Holst. This paper examines in what aspects and to what extent the music of Williams takes inspiration specifically from Holst’s The Planets. Overall style and specific excerpts will be compared to demonstrate that, while the two share some characteristics, there is not an overall sameness of style. It shall also be demonstrated that certain excerpts …

Stages Of Belonging: The Yiddish Art Theatre’S Search For Its Home In New York City, 1918-1934, Octavia Chudnow

Lawrence University Honors Projects

In the first decades of the twentieth century, the main form of entertainment for the Jewish immigrant community was shund (trash) theater: popular and commercial theater. Although many immigrants enjoyed this kind of entertainment, playwrights, artists, and intellectuals critiqued its place in immigrants’ lives, especially since shund revealed the process of assimilation and was considered low-brow art. In 1918, Maurice Schwartz opened the Yiddish Art Theatre to create high-brow art for Jewish audiences. In my essay, I focus on the company’s history between 1918 and 1934, on the theater’s move from downtown to Midtown and back to the Lower East …

The 2026 Sc Administrator Working Conditions Survey, Angela Starrett, Brian Cartiff, Svetlana Dmitrieva

Reports

The SC Administrator Working Conditions Survey (SCAWCS) was developed to systematically examine the work environments of school leaders. Grounded in the job demands-resources (JD-R) model, the survey conceptualizes administrator working conditions as a balance between the demands of the role and the resources available to support it. The JD-R framework emphasizes that high job demands, such as workload and accountability pressures, can contribute to stress and burnout when not sufficiently offset by job resources. In contrast, robust resources can buffer these demands and promote engagement, resilience, and long-term commitment to the profession. Designed by SC TEACHER, the SCAWCS measures 13 …

Bridging The Romantic Repertoire Gap: Transcribing Nineteenth- Century Opera Arie For Oboe And String Quintet, Joshua Tyler Matthews Jun 2026

Bridging The Romantic Repertoire Gap: Transcribing Nineteenth- Century Opera Arie For Oboe And String Quintet, Joshua Tyler Matthews

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation presents transcriptions of three nineteenth-century opera arie for oboe and string quintet as a means of engaging and adding to the instrument’s relatively limited Romantic-era repertoire. While the eighteenth and twentieth centuries produced substantial bodies of work for the oboe, the nineteenth-century reflects a noticeable reduction in solo and chamber compositions, influenced by factors including slower mechanical development, and aesthetic-related acoustic constraints. The study includes transcriptions of Léo Delibes’s “Air des clochettes” from Lakmé, Jacques Offenbach’s “Les oiseaux dans la charmille” from Les contes d’Hoffmann, and Vincenzo Bellini’s “Casta Diva” from Norma, selected to represent vocal styles from …

Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship

Background and Objectives: Vamorolone is a dissociative corticosteroid (CS) approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2023 for treating Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). This study evaluated the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics (PK) of vamorolone in young boys with DMD; exploratory objectives included efficacy and patient-reported outcomes. Methods: A 12-week, phase II, open-label, multiple-dose study (VBP15-006) enrolled CS-naive boys with DMD aged 2–< 4 years in Canada. Participants received 2 or 6 mg/kg/d oral vamorolone. An ongoing expanded access protocol (EAP) provided longer-term data. Primary end points were the occurrence of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) and changes from baseline to week 12 in height, weight, and body mass index (BMI); other end points included PK and effects of vamorolone on muscle function. Results: Twenty boys (mean age [SD] 3.4 [0.39] years) with similar baseline characteristics were enrolled; all completed VBP15-006 and 19 continued to receive vamorolone through EAP Canada. TEAEs were mostly mild, with no deaths, serious TEAEs, or TEAEs leading to drug discontinuation during VBP15-006. TEAEs were more frequent with 6 mg/kg/d vamorolone than with 2 mg/kg/d, with gastrointestinal disorders and infections/infestations, respectively, most reported. Vamorolone use was associated with morning serum cortisol reductions in all patients, more pronounced with 6 mg/kg/d. Stable growth trajectories were observed at both doses throughout VBP15-006 and the EAP Canada follow-up period, with a total median (Q1; Q3) exposure to vamorolone of 2 years (1.7; 2.3). By EAP Canada last visit, 8/19 patients had weight and BMI z-scores changes >0.5, suggestive of excessive weight gain over time. Vamorolone displayed a dose-dependent PK profile with rapid absorption and no accumulation. Dose-dependent improvements in motor function (measured by Bayley-III gross motor scaled score) were observed. Glucose metabolism …
