Constructive Memory And Conscious Experience, Daniel L. Schacter, Preston P. Thakral Aug 2024

Constructive Memory And Conscious Experience, Daniel L. Schacter, Preston P. Thakral

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Episodic memory relies on constructive processes that support simulating novel future events by flexibly recombining elements of past experiences, and that can also give rise to memory errors. In recent studies, we have developed methods to characterize the cognitive and neural processes that support conscious experiences linked to this process of episodic recombination, both when people simulate novel future events and commit recombination-related memory errors. In this Per-spective, we summarize recent studies that illustrate these phe-nomena, and discuss broader implications for characterizing the basis of conscious experiences associated with constructive memory from a cognitive neuroscience perspective.

Carceral Degrees: Successful Postsecondary Educational Pathways For Students Impacted By The Criminal Justice System In Maine, Mara Sanchez Phd Aug 2024

Carceral Degrees: Successful Postsecondary Educational Pathways For Students Impacted By The Criminal Justice System In Maine, Mara Sanchez Phd

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

The benefits of postsecondary degrees are striking for populations who have experienced incarceration, yet little is understood about how this population succeeds with educational attainment upon release from incarceration. This qualitative collective case study examined to what extent and how six formerly incarcerated individuals who started educational programming while incarcerated successfully persisted with postsecondary degrees after being released back into Maine communities. This study found that participants related education to self-care or treatment, described their own education journeys as different, or taking a different path, and felt motivated to persist with education despite external expectations, which one participant labeled “transformational …

An Examination Of Inclusion Of Secondary Students With Disabilities In One Local School District, Brandon Brown

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

This survey was designed to examine the role of inclusion in a secondary school setting in one school district. The survey attempted to measure the attitudes, and opinions of general education school teachers, special education school teachers, administrators, and the parents of a student with a disability. The survey determined that most opinions agreed that students with disabilities deserved to be included in classes and extracurricular activities but what that would look like was different in all groups. Opinions even varied when looking at what the exact definition of inclusion was. Results from the survey showed opinions that teachers and …

Environmental Physiology Of Medical Cannabis, F. Mitchell Westmoreland Aug 2024

Environmental Physiology Of Medical Cannabis, F. Mitchell Westmoreland

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) is increasingly being cultivated for industrial and medical uses. Medical cannabis is grown for cannabinoids and terpenes, compounds that continue to show promising therapeutic potential. Cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-9- tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) are the two most common cannabinoids, but more than 150 have been identified in cannabis. The 2018 Farm Bill federally legalized cannabis containing less than 0.3% THC and high-THC medical cannabis is legal in 38 states. There is a need to understand environmental effects on yield and quality to ensure safety and quality for medical use.

The cultivation of medical cannabis is centered around …

Using Wasp Specimens In Taxonomic, Biogeographic, Evolution, And Informal Education Studies, Brenna Lynn Decker Aug 2024

Using Wasp Specimens In Taxonomic, Biogeographic, Evolution, And Informal Education Studies, Brenna Lynn Decker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Entomology collections hold an untapped wealth of information, from insect morphology, genetics, locality and association data, and potential for use in education. Especially with insects that generate initial fears, such as wasps, seeing insect specimens provides a safe environment to learn about their behaviors. Wasps are insects in the order Hymenoptera, along with ants and bees. The public may hold fears against wasps, due to their negative portrayal in various media, but they serve as integral components of a functional ecosystem. Even with their importance, many groups of wasps are still highly understudies. This dissertation aims to tackle this fear …

Evidence For Partitioning? A Comparison Of Thermal Niche In Three Species Of Sympatric Lizards In Northeastern Utah, Kristopher B. Pedersen Aug 2024

Evidence For Partitioning? A Comparison Of Thermal Niche In Three Species Of Sympatric Lizards In Northeastern Utah, Kristopher B. Pedersen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Lizards actively maintain a narrow range of body temperatures through behavioral thermoregulation and microhabitat selection. Body temperature plays a critical role in many physiological processes. As a result, there is a range of body temperatures at which a lizard’s reproductive success (fitness) is maximized, known as the lizard’s thermal niche. There is strong evidence linking the available temperatures, or thermal properties of a microhabitat, to success in maintaining body temperatures within a preferred set range. Microhabitats have differing thermal properties, and so have different relative quality. Because thermal properties are limited in space and time, competition for high quality microhabitat …

The results suggest that the PDC-HS non-indicated intervention was effective in improving RBT® performance in completing session note documentation and further research should be conducted to study the impact of …

Herbivore Effects On Litter Quality And Quantity And Influences On Carbon Cycling, Taylor Saunders Aug 2024

Herbivore Effects On Litter Quality And Quantity And Influences On Carbon Cycling, Taylor Saunders

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Plants are responsible for a large amount of the movement of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) through terrestrial systems. One way that plants affect the movement of C and N is through plant litter inputs to soils. Plant litter highly influences processes such as soil microbial respiration and decomposition. Herbivores, such as geese in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, affect these processes by changing litter quality and quantity. These changes cause differences in soil respiration, microbial communities, and nutrient turnover. However, because geese influence litter quality, quantity, and habitat characteristics simultaneously, it is not yet clear which of these …

Evaluating Social Interactions As A Byproduct Of The Good Behavior Game Within An Elementary Small Group Classroom, Emma Walton Aug 2024

Evaluating Social Interactions As A Byproduct Of The Good Behavior Game Within An Elementary Small Group Classroom, Emma Walton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Children with Autism exhibit significantly fewer social interaction behaviors than their neurotypical peers. Much of the research around this deficit focuses on early intervention, and specialty services such as ABA intervention. The Good Behavior Game is an interdependent group contingency that has been shown to improve academic, social and appropriate behaviors in a variety of settings. This study explored the effects of the GBG on the social interactions of elementary students within special education without specifically targeting social interactions with peers through the game's rules. This study found negative (null) results, indicating that the GBG did not affect the social …

In recent years, there are trends toward cleaner port environments through enforcement by imposed legislation. Transit optimisation of fuel-based port service boats like harbour tugs has emerged as a critical task to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emission. In this paper, an innovative learning-based method, comprising a Reinforcement Learning (RL) model together with a fuel consumption prediction model, was proposed to formulate fuel-saving transit routes. Firstly, an ensemble model is established by combining a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model with a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) model, predicting fuel use based on tugboat movement and environment factors. Subsequently, an innovative RL based …

Dentigerous Cyst With A Diagnostic Dilemma: A Case Report, Suwarna Dangore- Khasbage Aug 2024

Dentigerous Cyst With A Diagnostic Dilemma: A Case Report, Suwarna Dangore- Khasbage

Journal of Dentomaxillofacial Science

Dentigerous cysts (DC) rank the second most common odontogenic cysts and affect teenagers.  These are always associated with an impacted or unerupted tooth, the commonest tooth being the mandibular 3rd molar. After that maxillary canine and maxillary third molar are the teeth related to DC. The pathogenesis is such that the cyst is attached to the cementoenamel junction of an impacted tooth. Thus, the radiographic presentation is a radiolucency encircling the crown of an unerupted tooth. This characteristic appearance is diagnostic and assists in differentiating DC from other similar lesions like odontogenic cysts as well as odontogenic tumors with …

The Cloister And The Square: Gender Dynamics In Renaissance Florence, Soph Garrison Aug 2024

The Cloister And The Square: Gender Dynamics In Renaissance Florence, Soph Garrison

Epochs Art History Journal

The cyclical perpetuation of patriarchal ideals within Renaissance Florence reveals the consistent suppression of femininity throughout history. Through the displacement of feminine imagery coupled with the increase of hypermasculinization and phallic imagery, the intricacies of gender dynamics expose their trivial nature and execution. Although the primary perpetrators remain up for debate, religious culture sought to not only silence feminine individuals but to control them indefinitely. As such, the art produced during the rise of the Florentine Republic displays the rejection of femininity and the endorsement of masculine depictions of values. Mary Garrard’s assessment of gender dynamics in Renaissance Florence aligns …

Faculty Perceptions About Instructional Accommodations For Students With Social Anxiety Disorder, Jessie Frances Edith Tudor-Tangeman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem examined was that post-secondary faculty experience challenges related to providing responsive accommodations to post-secondary students who self-identify with a diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (SAD). The purpose of this study was to investigate post-secondary faculty’s perceptions of their ability to make responsive instructional modifications beyond the preliminary accommodations mandated by university disability services for post-secondary students who self-identify as experiencing SAD. The conceptual framework that grounds this study was Clark and Wells’ (1995) cognitive model of social phobia. The research questions focused on the perceptions of post-secondary faculty in relation to their ability to make responsive instructional modifications …

Informativeness Of Key Audit Matters: Evidence From China, Beng Wee Goh, Kiat Bee Jimmy Lee, Dan Li, Muzhi Wang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study examines whether the key audit matters (KAMs) disclosed in expanded audit reports as a part of recent regulatory reforms are informative for investors in an emerging economy setting. Using the recent adoption of expanded audit reports for firms listed exclusively in Mainland China, we find robust evidence that the abnormal trading volume and earnings response coefficients (ERCs) are higher and that stock price synchronicity is lower during the postadoption than preadoption period. In additional tests, we find evidence that KAMs are more informative for non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs), smaller firms, and firms with a smaller analyst following. Finally, we …
