“I Desire The Road. . . [But] [R]Oads Were Made For Young Men, Not Middle-Aged Women”: Ista’S Journey From Dowager To Paladin, Robin Anne Reid
Mythcon
Scholarship on Ista, Dowager Royina of Chalion, was minimal until the most recent anthology on Bujold’s work was published with four essays (out of 14, 28%) that focus on Ista, either as the primary focus of the essay (Yung Lee, Herington,), or as one of two characters analyzed (Palmer-Patel, MacDonald). These essay focus on queer and/or feminist readings of Ista (Yung Lee, MacDonald, Herington), and on analyzing the paradox of free will and fate in the Chalion duology (Palmer-Patel). In “I desire the road,” (Bujold’s emphasis), I build on these essays, all of which I consider convincing and strongly argued) …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor Moench) and corn are the most popular summer forages in south-west Japan. In this experiment, the digestibilities of sorghum silage were determined by adult sheep and by heifers. The digestibilities of all proximate components by heifers were higher than by sheep, Non-structural carbohydrates were almost completely digested by sheep, in contrast to heifers which excreted a portion of the grain undigested. Neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre, hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin digestibilities for heifers were higher than those for sheep. Heifers digested each hemicellulose monosaccharide better than sheep, Sheep and heifers differed by the largest extent …

Hypogene Speleogenesis In Carbonates By Cooling Hydrothermal Flow: The Case Of Mt. Berenike Caves, Israel, Roi Roded, Boaz Langford, Einat Aharonov, Piotr Szymczak, Micka Ullman, Shemesh Yaaran, Boaz Lazar, Amos Frumkin
International Journal of Speleology
The Berenike hypogenic cave system near Lake Kinneret, Israel, provides a valuable case study for investigating the recently proposed Confined-Cooling-Flow (CCF) speleogenesis model. Field and speleological surveys, along with existing research, are used to provide a thorough analysis. The CCF model relies on a simple thermo-hydro-chemical scenario, involving the rise of CO2-rich hydrothermal fluids discharging into a confined layer. The cooling of these CO2-rich fluids turns them into aggressive solutions due to the inverse relation between temperature and solubility of carbonates (retrograde solubility). Previous geochemical and numerical analyses of the CCF model predict localized and persistent dissolution and speleogenesis on …

Online technical bootcamps serve as robust tools for imparting in-de\-mand skills, with their efficacy dependent on successful completion and participant confidence. However, to optimize these programs, a one-size-fits-all approach is insufficient. Tailoring programs to the specific needs of participants is essential, particularly when reaching out to marginalized communities characterized by low confidence levels and confronting digital challenges like limited internet access, power instability, and security concerns.

Writing In The Zones For The Reading Of Proofs In The Mathematics Classroom: A How-To Guide, Miha E. Habič, Kaethe Minden
Early College Folio
We present a guide on how to use Writing in the Zones, a particular kind of Writing and Thinking activity, to support active student engagement with mathematical texts, and the reading of mathematical proofs specifically. \\ Proofs in textbooks can often be opaque, and students commonly rely on direct teacher intervention in the classroom (i.e. lecturing) rather than engaging in a fruitful struggle with the text itself. We also include some specific examples of this approach and student outcomes that we observed.

Service Dogs: A Catalyst For Post-Traumatic Growth Among Military Veterans With Ptsd, Matthew P. Knight
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
The conclusion of the war in Afghanistan in 2021 has left a significant portion of veterans grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with estimates suggesting 23% of post-9/ 11 veterans are affected. Traditional psychotherapies, while effective, often see high attrition rates due to stigma-related barriers, underscoring the need for complementary approaches that resonate with the unique psychosocial needs embedded in military veteran culture.
Historically, research on psychiatric service dogs has focused predominantly on PTSD symptom alleviation. This conceptual article introduces a novel focus on their role in promoting positive psychological change known as post-traumatic growth (PTG), a topic that has …

Spatio-Temporal Changes In The Gravity And Post-Mining Seismic Activity In Abandoned Deep Coal Mine Kazimierz-Juliusz During Flooding, Andrzej Kotyrba, Łukasz Kortas, Sławomir Siwek
Journal of Sustainable Mining
The flooding of an underground hard coal mine, resulting in the filling of post-mining voids (workings and goafs) and the repeated saturation of pore and interstitial spaces of the adjacent rock with water, change the mass and its distribution in the near-surface part of the earth’s crust. This process is slow and lasts many years. As a result, the local gravity field undergoes dynamic changes. It depends on the surface morphology and the density of geological strata, which is related to their water content. Changes in the local gravity field can be monitored by periodic gravity surveys performed in the …

Vibration Analysis And Condition Monitoring For Cement Mill (Case Of Hamma Bouziane-Constantine Cement Plant), Linda Bouyaya
Emirates Journal for Engineering Research
Monitoring and diagnosing damage in dynamic machinery is a growing area of interest in the cement industry. Indeed, industrial equipment is disrupted throughout its operation by malfunctions; especially in old age; which reduces their operating costs and availability. Therefore, the detection and identification of faults in industrial systems - diagnosis - is of capital importance for their operation and a major challenge for modern industry. Among the most used diagnostic techniques, we find spectral analysis, a condition-based maintenance tool, which is used to study the vibration signals of dynamic machines.
In this context, the objective of this work is the …
