Forest and Society

This article explores the socio-political and ecological dimensions of land acquisition in the context of Indonesia's Trans Sulawesi Railway Project, focusing on Salenrang Village in Maros Regency, South Sulawesi. Grounded in a critical ethnographic method, the research examines how affected agrarian communities respond to dispossession through differentiated strategies, ranging from passive acceptance and conditional negotiation to symbolic and moral resistance. These responses are shaped by unequal access to land tenure recognition, fragmented compensation mechanisms, and exclusion from participatory decision-making processes. Drawing on political ecology, critical agrarian studies, and the theory of everyday resistance, the study situates infrastructure development as a …

Comparison Of Alos-2 Palsar-2 L-Band Images For Fuel Moisture Discrimination In Forests In Mountainous Areas, Marin Loncar, Brigitte Leblon, Ashlin Richardson, Laura L. Bourgeau-Chavez, Dzhamal Amishev

This study compares terrain-corrected polarimetric variables derived from L-band ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 acquired over a forested and mountainous region of southeast British Columbia (BC) during a drier and a wetter date. Backscatter, polarimetric decomposition parameters, and polarimetric discriminators were compared across 5 broad fuel types (forest, sparse, unforested, incomplete burn, complete burn) to examine if values differ between fuel moisture conditions as characterized by the value of the Drought Code (DC). Polarimetric variables suitable for use in fuel moisture modeling were identified using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test of significance applied to the normalized differences of these variables between …

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a rare disorder causing bone fragility, pain, and functional impairment that causes substantial psychosocial burden. This study examined how self-perceived burden (SPB), or distress from feelings of dependence on caregivers, relates to depression, anxiety, and suicidality in adults with OI. A total of 208 adults (M age = 42.9, predominately White and female) with OI were recruited to complete a cross-sectional survey assessing SPB, psychological symptoms, health, and sociodemographics. Results indicated that SPB was significantly higher among younger individuals, those not living with a partner, those living with adult family members, lower-income groups, and individuals …

Different Dimensions Of Social Support On Social Media And Leisure-Time Physical Activity Intentions Among Chinese College Students Applying The Theory Of Planned Behavior: A Cross-Sectional Study, Ni Zhang, Carolyn Madison Chang, Yu Zhang, Lu Guo, Qizhi Xu Jun 2026

Different Dimensions Of Social Support On Social Media And Leisure-Time Physical Activity Intentions Among Chinese College Students Applying The Theory Of Planned Behavior: A Cross-Sectional Study, Ni Zhang, Carolyn Madison Chang, Yu Zhang, Lu Guo, Qizhi Xu

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Background:

Leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) participation among Chinese college students remains insufficient despite growing public health concerns regarding sedentary lifestyles and obesity. Social media platforms have increasingly become important channels for delivering social support related to physical activity (PA); however, different dimensions of social support on social media may exert distinct psychological influences on exercise intentions.

Objective:

Guided by the theory of planned behavior, this study aimed to examine the direct and indirect relationships between different dimensions of social support on social media and Chinese college students’ intentions to engage in LTPA.

Methods:

A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among …

English Language Arts Teachers’ Perceptions Of Artificial Intelligence, Andrew J. Hookie, James P. Concannon Jun 2026

English Language Arts Teachers’ Perceptions Of Artificial Intelligence, Andrew J. Hookie, James P. Concannon

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

We explored secondary English Language Arts teachers’ perceptions of Artificial Intelligence in the classroom. Using a mixed methods research design process, one hundred and forty-one secondary teachers were surveyed from several urban and suburban school districts in the state of Missouri. Respondents were comprised of forty-three English Language Arts teachers and ninety-seven non-English Language Arts teachers. Data were collected using a Qualtrics survey, focusing on three variables: Experience, Knowledge, and Awareness of AI (EKA); Perceived Outcomes of Using AI (PO); and Perceived Ability and Self-Efficacy with AI (PA). Independent t-tests were conducted and revealed a statistically significant difference in AI …

Investigating Teacher Well-Being With Non-Invasive Biomarkers: Lessons From A Participatory Mixed-Method Exploratory Approach, Amanda S. Frasier, Jewel B. Thomas, Trystan Innes, Noah E. Daniels, S. Grayson Blount, Chad R. Frasier

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This paper reports on a mixed-method exploratory study gauging the feasibility of utilizing an untethered harness-based device to collect biomarker data from teachers at a single school in Tennessee. Collection occurred across the course of a year at three different timepoints: a typical workday, a high stress workday, and a break day. Overall, our participants had positive experiences with the data collection process, and their feedback iteratively influenced the protocol. Further, the preliminary data suggests the biomarkers indicate a sympathetic nervous response is seen when teachers report emotional or psychological stress. While the small scale of this pilot does not …

Legal Scholarship In An Age Of Social Media, Miriam Cherry Jun 2026

Legal Scholarship In An Age Of Social Media, Miriam Cherry

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

This symposium essay will offer insights into how legal scholarship—and the law—are changing in a time of social media. Platforms or their names may change, but the immediacy and connection that they offer, for better or worse, here to stay. The argument amounts to two sides of the same coin. Social media can raise the salience of an issue, story, or event, and in doing so, may provide information that helps to inform our work as legal scholars. The converse is also true: legal scholarship also needs to study social media. This essay takes each point in turn.

Freshwater Harmful Algal Blooms (Habs) Public Health Message Efficacy Evaluation, Alexandra Benitez Gonzalez, Heather A. Triezenberg, Diane Doberneck, Abigail Bennett, Mark Rey Jun 2026

Freshwater Harmful Algal Blooms (Habs) Public Health Message Efficacy Evaluation, Alexandra Benitez Gonzalez, Heather A. Triezenberg, Diane Doberneck, Abigail Bennett, Mark Rey

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) can present health risks to humans, animals, or ecosystems. Communicating with the public about HABs risks can be challenging because symptoms vary in type and severity across different individuals. However, people with underlying health conditions are often particularly vulnerable to exposure, and they may experience negative health outcomes if they lack awareness of the risks that HABs pose. Literature on risk communication suggests that the way messages are framed influences the impact on risk perception and behavioral intentions. To provide insight into how agencies and practitioners can more effectively communicate health risks from HABs, we designed …
