The Effects Of Abstinence Status And Sleep Quality On Resting State Alpha Power In Cocaine Use Disorder, Heather E Webber, Danielle A Kessler, Joy M Schmitz, Scott D Lane, Robert Suchting
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Rationale
Substance use disorders are associated with notable sleep disturbances. Electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha power occurs during wakeful rest, is associated with sleepiness, and indicates neural deactivation.
Objectives
The goal of the current study was to assess the effects of abstinence on the relationship between alpha power and subjective sleep quality in participants with cocaine use disorder (CUD).
Methods
Participants with CUD (n = 32) who were recently or non-abstinent completed a resting-state EEG paradigm (90 s eyes open/closed). Absolute alpha power was calculated using the fast Fourier transform and by averaging within the power spectra of the alpha band (8–13 …

OhioHealth Research Institute Articles
BACKGROUND: Sport-related concussion (SRC) increases the risk of subsequent musculoskeletal injury, yet the mechanisms underlying this vulnerability remain unclear. Fear of movement (kinesiophobia) may contribute to impaired motor control.
PURPOSE: This study examined kinesiophobia and postural stability in adolescent athletes at return-to-play (RTP) after SRC and evaluated changes six months later.
DESIGN: Observational analytical study with cross-sectional (case-control) and prospective cohort components.
METHODS: Thirty-seven concussed athletes (15.7 ± 1.3 years, 45.9% female) and 17 matched controls (16.4 ± 2.1 years, 52.9% female) completed static single-leg stance and dynamic single-leg landing tasks under single- and dual-task (Stroop) conditions. Fear of movement …

Analysis Of Inhibitor Supply Control Systems To Prevent Hydrate Formation In A Low-Temperature Gas Separation Unit And A Method For Solving The Problem, Shakhzod Nurmuhammadovich Amirov Mr, Erkin Xxx Uljayev
Technical science and innovation
The article examines and analyzs patents, published scientific works, and currently used scientific and practical methods and devices for regulating the parameters of the low-temperature separation process in production. However, the conducted analysis showed that one of the main causes of hydrate formation in the device is the lack of continuous comprehensive control over parameters such as the pressure of the inhibitors supplied to the injectors at each stage and the moisture content of the total gas, i.e., the moisture content of the total gas at the system inlet, the gas temperature at the device outlet, and the pressure and …

Physical Inactivity In Preclinical Alzheimer's Disease: Risk Factor, Early Symptom, Or Both, Jiawei Zhao, Xin Li, Mengxuan Wu, Zhanjun Zhang
Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications
Physical inactivity is a key modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, emerging evidence suggests a bidirectional relationship where inactivity also serves as an early manifestation of AD pathology. This perspective synthesizes recent findings from long-term epidemiological cohorts, brainstem neuropathology, and digital phenotyping to reconceptualize the role of inactivity in preclinical AD. Early tau accumulation in catecholaminergic nuclei (locus coeruleus and ventral tegmental area) disrupts circuits essential for reward valuation and effort calculation. We hypothesize that this neurobiological failure may manifest as prodromal apathy and declining physical activity years before cognitive impairment. Standard metrics like step counts fail to …
Interim Measures In International Commercial Arbitration: Revisiting Enforceability, Sophia Kubo
Interim Measures In International Commercial Arbitration: Revisiting Enforceability, Sophia Kubo
Michigan Journal of International Law
Interim measures may offer a solution to obstructive tactics in international commercial disputes. While arbitral tribunals’ authority to grant provisional relief is now widely recognized, enforcement remains legally uncertain and fragmented, undermining the promise of this solution. Acknowledging that proposals for a supranational treaty on enforcement of interim measures or an amendment to existing treaties are unrealistic, this article offers a critical analysis of existing enforcement models– court assistance, exequatur, and mixed approaches–and evaluates them through the lens of legal certainty and efficiency. The article argues that the exequatur model, supported by a dynamic interpretation of the New York Convention, …
Insurgent Until Proven Innocent: Land, Power, And The Right To Defend Rights, Kelsey Jost-Creegan
Insurgent Until Proven Innocent: Land, Power, And The Right To Defend Rights, Kelsey Jost-Creegan
Michigan Journal of International Law
As the climate crisis intensifies, advocates worldwide have stood up to defend their communities, territories, and environment. In response, they have faced violent retaliation. This repression persists despite evolving international, regional, and national-level legal frameworks around the “right to defend rights” and the “right to protection.” This article begins by providing a comprehensive overview of this evolving legal landscape. Against this backdrop, the article examines the tactics and architectures of violence used to repress land and environmental defenders through the lens of counterinsurgency theory.
The article proposes a typology of counterinsurgent violence including: surveillance; stigmatization; criminalization; arbitrary detention; infiltration; cooptation; …

Background/Objectives: Internet gaming has become a widespread global activity, raising concerns about the prevalence of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). However, existing meta-analyses report highly variable prevalence estimates. This umbrella review aims to clarify the prevalence and variability of IGD by synthesizing evidence from meta-analyses to provide a comprehensive overview of IGD prevalence across populations, age groups, and regions. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, systematic searches were carried out across five published literature databases and two supplementary search sources. Title and abstract screening, followed by full-text eligibility assessment, were conducted independently by three authors. The same three authors then performed data extraction …
Dragging The Self: Manifesting Genderqueer Identity As A Drag King Performer And Teacher, Jasmine Mcmasters
Dragging The Self: Manifesting Genderqueer Identity As A Drag King Performer And Teacher, Jasmine Mcmasters
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates drag performance as a site of gender identity formation, pedagogical practice, and arts-based inquiry through a critical autoethnographic methodology. Drawing on my lived experience as the drag king, Jas Mania, I investigate how drag functions as a dialogical relationship between performance and self, facilitating an ongoing exploration of my identity as a queer, non-binary artist and educator. Situated within theories of gender performativity, queer phenomenology, queer temporality, and performative pedagogy, this research considers how embodied performance generates knowledge that extends beyond the stage and into everyday life. Using improvisatory arts-based methods of reflective journaling and performance production, …
Using Recommender Systems To Help Revitalize Local News, Payam Pourashraf
Using Recommender Systems To Help Revitalize Local News, Payam Pourashraf
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Local news outlets have experienced steep declines in readership as national and global online news sources have expanded and consolidated audience attention. Because many local media companies rely primarily on subscription-based business models, they must increase user engagement and provide clearer value to local subscribers. Personalization and recommender systems offer one promising path toward this goal. However, many recommender systems assume that a user’s past behavior can be summarized in a single unified profile. In practice, preferences are often context-dependent: the same person may prefer different content depending on geography, time, task, or situation. Local news offers a socially important …

Background: A knowledge gap remains in how the rate of body weight reduction impacts efficacy and safety of obesity management medications. This SURMOUNT-5 post hoc analysis aimed to define rapid responders and evaluated efficacy and safety of tirzepatide versus. semaglutide in rapid responders versus non-rapid responders.
Methods: Rapid responders and non-rapid responders were defined as participants that obtained ≥ 15% and < 15% body weight reduction by Week 24, respectively. Baseline characteristics, and proportion of participants achieving body weight reduction thresholds by Week 72 were assessed. End-of-study safety and gastrointestinal adverse events measures were summarized.
Results: Overall, 32.3% were rapid responders (tirzepatide: 44%, semaglutide: 21%). The proportions of participants achieving body weight reduction thresholds by Week 72 were higher for rapid responders versus non-rapid responders. Safety trends for tirzepatide and semaglutide were similar between …
A Language Model’S Capability To Make Reasoned Decisions In Administrative Law, Robert Diab
A Language Model’S Capability To Make Reasoned Decisions In Administrative Law, Robert Diab
Dalhousie Law Journal
This paper calls into question a common set of assumptions about the use of artificial intelligence in administrative law in Canada. While some assume that AI (AI) may be useful for assisting a decision-maker where core rights are affected, the prevailing view is that it cannot be relied upon to make final decisions, due mainly to functional limitations: AI cannot give reasons and its outcomes are fraught with bias and opacity that cannot be overcome. The prevailing view, however, took shape in response to earlier, more limited forms of AI. Large language models can be used in a way that …
Privacy, Paternalism, And Standing In Health Professions Regulation, Anthony Sangiuliano
Privacy, Paternalism, And Standing In Health Professions Regulation, Anthony Sangiuliano
Dalhousie Law Journal
When investigating whether a doctor has behaved unethically while treating a patient, professional regulatory colleges may search patients’ confidential medical records without patients’ consent. I argue that this practice is not paternalistic, nor does it usurp patients’ standing to decide for themselves whether to sacrifice their privacy to hold the doctor to account for professional wrongdoing. College investigations that non-consensually invade patient privacy do not express disrespect for patients’ agency because they aim to mitigate harm to the broader public. Unlike criminal prosecutions of doctors which uphold moral values pervading the public at large, college investigations enforce ethical standards within …
A Qualitative Study Of Key “Regulatory” Factors Influencing Patient Access To Medical Assistance In Dying In Canada, Ruthie Jeanneret, Eliana Close, Jocelyn Downie, Ben P. White
A Qualitative Study Of Key “Regulatory” Factors Influencing Patient Access To Medical Assistance In Dying In Canada, Ruthie Jeanneret, Eliana Close, Jocelyn Downie, Ben P. White
Dalhousie Law Journal
Medical assistance in dying (“MAiD”) was legalized federally in Canada after the landmark case, Carter v Canada (AG), 2015 SCC 5. Bill C-14 introduced a federal legislative framework for MAiD in 2016, which was amended by Bill C-7 in 2021. Some Bill C-7 amendments directly responded to the decision in Truchon c Canada (PG), 2019 QCCS 3792. Other amendments responded to several factors identified as barriers to patient access, including the requirement for two independent witnesses, the 10-day reflection period, and the requirement to provide final consent at the time of administration of MAiD medication. However, emerging literature identifies that …
Aboriginal Title In Former French Colonies: Reaching Back Before The Assertion Of French Sovereignty, Ghislain Otis
Aboriginal Title In Former French Colonies: Reaching Back Before The Assertion Of French Sovereignty, Ghislain Otis
Dalhousie Law Journal
A substantial part of Canada was colonized by France well before the British arrival in the mid-eighteenth century. This article examines the effect of the assertion of French sovereignty on the Aboriginal title regime recognized under British-Canadian law.
In Part I, the author identifies a trend in the jurisprudence whereby courts assess the Indigenous territorial situation existing at the time of the British assertion of sovereignty, rather than at the time of French sovereignty, for the purpose of applying the exclusive control criterion underlying the recognition of Aboriginal title. The author then demonstrates that this approach creates significant difficulties for …

Environmental And Socioeconomic Effects Of Roundtable On Sustainable Palm Oil Certification: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Kibrom T. Sibhatu, Matin Qaim
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Palm oil is the most widely produced and consumed vegetable oil worldwide, but its production is associated with deforestation and other environmental and social problems. Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is the only internationally-recognized voluntary certification standard aimed at mitigating such problems. Many studies examine RSPO’s effects on particular outcomes in specific contexts, but a consolidated global assessment is lacking. Here, we systematically review the literature and identify 53 original studies covering RSPO effects in various countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Where data availability permits, we also conduct meta-analysis. Results reveal that RSPO can lead to environmental …

Typicality Of Inferences Resulting From Limited Psychometric Models And Statistical Techniques Used: A Review Of Education Studies Published In Arab Journals (2016–2024), Mohammed A. A. Abulela, Mustafa Ali Khalaf
Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies
The study assessed the typicality of inferences in educational research published in Arab journals between 2016 and 2024 by determining the prevalence of psychometric models, the statistical techniques utilized, and the extent to which their assumptions were checked. Reviewed studies included 410 articles from eleven journals. The findings indicated that most studies relied on Cronbach’s alpha for estimating score reliability (60%) without checking its assumptions, while the use of confirmatory factor analysis and item response theory was limited. Additionally, researchers predominantly relied on face validity (expert judgment) at a rate of 55.3%, reflecting limited validation efforts for achieving the quality …

In light of the evidence that nonhuman primates naturally develop Alzheimer's disease neuropathologies, there is a renewed interest in research on the comparative biology of aging, including neurological changes across the age groups in species with diverse lifespans. In this paper, we examined age‐related differences in two measures of cortical folding, mean depth and fold opening, in a sample of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and olive baboons (Papio anubis). We found significant species differences in the slope and pattern of age‐related changes in cortical folding. As predicted, chimpanzees showed negative linear associations between age and mean depth and …

Social markers of acceptance are the attributes seen as important for immigrants to achieve or display in order to be accepted similarly to a local-born citizen. In research on constructions of national identity, factor analysis reveals a culture-specific, two-factor structure akin to the ethnic–civic distinction observed. In this paper, we extend this work by examining the relationship between social markers of acceptance and immigrants’ well-being in three national contexts: Australia, Japan, and the U.S. Specifically, in study 1 we examined the factor structure of social markers in non-immigrant samples in each context (Australia, n = 1357; Japan, n = 2000; …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
With escalating environmental concerns, solar energy is a feasible approach to support a sustainable environment, considering the pressing need to move away from fossil fuels. Optimizing solar collector’s efficiency improves energy capture and lowers carbon emissions. One innovative technique is to the surface of solar collectors. The heat transfer is greatly increased by adding such tiny indentations, encouraging turbulence in the incoming working fluid. The article reviews the effect of dimples on the efficiency of various collector applications, including flat plate collector, solar water heaters, solar air collectors, parabolic trough solar collectors, photovoltaic thermal systems, desalination, and many others. The …

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals that are highly resistant to biodegradation. Due to their bioaccumulation, long-term persistence, and adverse human health effects, they have been classified as organic pollutants. The leaching of PFAS into water sources has resulted in their detection in global drinking water supplies. To mitigate adverse health effects and minimise environmental damage, regulations regarding maximum allowable PFAS concentrations in water have been imposed. Traditional PFAS in water quantification methods, such as liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), have intrinsic limitations that pose challenges in such PFAS analysis. …

Saw-Tooth Slot Antenna Sensor For Dielectric Characterization Of Alcohols, Saline Solutions, And Glucose, Hilary Scott Nkimbeng Cho, Jin W. Choi
Michigan Tech Publications
In this study, a low-profile and saw-tooth-shaped slot antenna sensor is proposed for liquid characterization, demonstrating sensitivity to dielectric variations in glucose, saline, and alcohol-based solutions. The antenna consists of a single-layer Rogers 4003C substrate with a rectangular slot integrated with multiple saw-tooth perturbations on the top side and a modified microstrip feedline with a quarter-wavelength transformer on the bottom side. The saw-tooth geometry enhances electric field concentration within the slot region, thereby improving sensitivity to variations in dielectric properties. When liquids with different dielectric constants are deposited on the saw-tooth region of the antenna, measurable resonance frequency shifts occur, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This PRISMA-guided scoping review examines the use of waste materials in civil engineering as a sustainable approach to reducing environmental impacts, conserving natural resources, and supporting circular economy principles. The rapid growth of urbanization, industrialization, mining, and agricultural activities generates large amounts of waste materials, including fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag, bauxite residue, mining tailings, waste rock, acid-mine drainage sludge, waste plastics, post-consumer vulcanized rubber, recycled construction materials, and agricultural ashes. The disposal of these materials often creates serious environmental and land-use problems, making their reuse increasingly important. In this context, civil engineering is one of the most promising …

A Leadership Trait Analysis Of U.S. Vice President Jd Vance, Aubrey Immelman, Sophie J. Heck
Psychology Faculty Publications
This paper presents the results of an indirect leadership trait analysis of U.S. vice president JD Vance, conducted for the purpose of anticipating Vance’s likely leadership style in a high-level executive role in politics, from the conceptual perspective of Margaret Hermann’s leadership trait analysis (LTA) model, employing an empirically based “psychodiagnostic meta-analytic” methodology.
Psychodiagnostically relevant data relating to Vance were collected from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Hermann Leadership Trait Inventory (HLTI) — constructed expressly for the present study — which taps seven leadership trait dimensions: belief in one’s ability to control …

Operational Agency: A Permeable Legal Fiction For Tracing Culpability In Ai Systems, Anirban Mukherjee, Hannah H. Chang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems act with a high degree of independence yet lack legal personhood—a paradox that fractures doctrines grounded in human-centric notions of mens rea and actus reus. This Article introduces Operational Agency (OA)—a permeable legal fiction structured as an ex post evidentiary framework—and Operational Agency Graph (OAG)—a tool for mapping causal interactions among human actors, organizations, and AI systems. OA evaluates an AI’s observable operational characteristics: its goal-directedness (as a proxy for intent), predictive processing (as a proxy for foresight), and safety architecture (as a proxy for standard of care). OAG operationalizes that analysis by embedding these …

Premenstrual dysphoric disorders [PMDD] often emerge during adolescence and cause significant impairment to female adolescents. While studies have examined the relationship between child maltreatment [CM] and PMDD symptoms among women, studies with adolescents are scarce, particularly in Nigeria. Objectives
The association between CM profiles and PMDD symptoms, depression and anxiety symptoms, suicidal ideation and social support was examined.Participants and Settings
A school-based sample of 296 female adolescents [aged 10–22 years old] was enrolled in 11 local government areas within the Ibadan metropolis, Oyo State, Nigeria. Methods
Self-report data from the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire [CTQ], Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Scale …Ai-Powered Synthetic Biology: Current Situation, Challenges, And Future Perspectives, Izem Olcay Sahin, Nuriye Gokce, Duygu T. Synthetic biology has evolved from a set of engineering aspirations to an operationally sophisticated discipline, and artificial intelligence (AI) is its fastest-growing accelerant. This review traces that convergence across six interlocking domains: systems-level biological modeling, de novo protein engineering, metabolic and microbial programming, multi-omics data integration, regulatory element design, and clinical translation. For each domain, we survey established results, integrate findings from 2010–2026 literature, and articulate the trajectories that will define the next decade. Emerging themes include physics-informed neural networks for mechanistically constrained biological modeling, drug design, and federated learning architectures that allow global omics collaboration without centralizing sensitive data, …
