Hexagonal crash boxes offer superior crashworthiness compared to other cross-sectional geometries, and their performance can be further enhanced by integrating additively manufactured lattice fillers. This study investigates the quasi-static crushing behavior of hexagonal crash boxes filled with hexagonal close-packed (HCP) lattice structures fabricated via stereolithography (SLA). Finite element models developed in ABAQUS/Explicit, validated against quasi-static compression experiments, show discrepancies below 5%, indicating that polymeric lattice fillers provide modest performance gains, achieving a crushing force efficiency (CFE) of 20%–25%. Replacing polymeric lattices with metallic fillers, namely 316L stainless steel and Ti–6Al–4V titanium alloy, substantially increases energy absorption, with Ti–6Al–4V delivering the …

The study of diet and nutrition is often filled with numerous myths and misconceptions. A Google Scholar search of “diets health” yields over 4 million results. This review examines frequently asked questions about diets and dietary habits. These questions include the following: 1) Is a caloric surplus necessary for building skeletal muscle? 2) Is it possible to lose body mass or fat mass without caloric restriction? 3) Is intermittent fasting better than chronic caloric restriction for weight loss? 4) Are there sex differences in the response to fasting? 5) Can diet alone fulfill the macro and micronutrient needs of exercise-trained …

Carrying The Midwife’S Bag Across The Atlantic: German Midwives And Paraprofessional Midwifery In The Us, 1850s-1920s, Melanie Simone Lorenz
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation compares the occupational development of midwifery in the United States and Germany between the 1850s and the 1920s. It examines how midwifery in nineteenth-century Germany developed into an early paraprofession through its inclusion in the paramedical division of labor and the creation of professional associations and a trade journal. In the United States, by contrast, such a development did not occur. Instead, physicians excluded midwives from the emerging paramedical division of labor. Even though a dedicated group of German American physicians and midwives attempted to replicate the German model of midwifery in St. Louis, Missouri, this paraprofessional form …

Coping With Uncertainty In Everyday Situations (Cues©): The U.S. Pilot Study, Sarah Lehman
Dissertations (1934 -)
Autistic youth experience anxiety at an increased rate compared to their neurotypical counterparts. The presence of anxiety often amplifies the social and functional difficulties faced by autistic youth, which can exacerbate poor outcomes. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU), defined as negative beliefs and reactions to unpredictable or ambiguous situations, has been identified as a key factor to the manifestation of anxiety in autistic populations. The current study aimed to replicate the protocol and results from Rodgers et al. (2023) by conducting the first U.S. pilot study examining the feasibility and efficacy of Coping with Uncertainty in Everyday Situations (CUES©); an 8-week …

Objective: Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i), glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA), and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are widely used for type 2 diabetes, yet their comparative immunologic safety is uncertain. To address this gap, we evaluated autoimmune disease incidence among patients treated with these agents.
Methods: We conducted emulated target trials using electronic health record data from 152 health care organizations in the TriNetX network (2016-2023). Adults with type 2 diabetes initiating DPP-4i, GLP-1RA, or SGLT2i monotherapy and no prior autoimmune disease were included. Propensity score matching balanced demographics, comorbidities, laboratory data, and medications. Cohorts comprised 118,419 matched DPP-4i versus GLP-1RA …

Background & aims: Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is characterised by multiorgan failure and high short-term mortality in hospitalised patients with acute decompensation of cirrhosis. Although the EASL-CLIF criteria are widely used for diagnosis and prognostication, evolving definitions of organ dysfunction and emerging therapies require updated, tailored criteria to improve diagnostic accuracy, treatment assessment, and applicability in clinical trials. We aimed to develop and validate the A-TANGO organ failure (OF) score to refine ACLF diagnosis and enhance its utility for treatment response evaluation and risk stratification.
Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of prospective observational cohorts. The derivation cohort comprised three …

Background and aims: The terminology for hepatic steatosis and NAFLD was revised under the umbrella of steatotic liver disease, with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) as the primary subtype. MASLD is defined by hepatic steatosis plus at least 1 cardiometabolic risk factor. A new category, Met-ALD, describes MASLD with alcohol consumption below the defined thresholds for alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). While adult studies have demonstrated strong concordance between NAFLD and MASLD, the applicability of this framework in children remains unclear.
Approach and results: We assessed children clinically diagnosed with NAFLD and enrolled in the NASH CRN who had available …

This article presents the redesign of an undergraduate History of Mathematics course for preservice teachers at a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Grounded in Community- and Family-Centered Pedagogy (CFCP) and Marshall’s framework for culturally sustaining mathematics teaching, the course intentionally moved beyond Eurocentric narratives to center students’ linguistic, familial, and cultural resources as integral to mathematical meaning-making. Two core assignments anchored the redesign: (1) evolving Padlet reflections that connected global mathematical histories to students’ family and community practices, and (2) bilingual Cuentos Matemáticos that wove mathematical concepts with personal and cultural narratives in English and Spanish. Selected student reflections illustrate how these experiences …

Introduction: Latina caregivers face significant physical and mental health risks due to the demands of caregiving. The decision to become a caregiver is often influenced by various factors including cultural values such as familismo and marianismo. It is essential that caregivers recognize the importance of self-care to prevent burnout. Without self-care, caregivers face an increased risk of stress, which can negatively affect physical and emotional health.
Methods: A qualitative approach using focus groups to explore Latina caregivers’ understanding and engagement in self-care.
Results: Findings suggested that participants understand the need for self-care; however, family and cultural needs were prioritized. When …

Early literacy instruction in the U.S. often centers monolingual, English-dominant practices that marginalize multilingual learners and their families. This qualitative design-based research study examines a family literacy initiative that engaged caregivers and teachers as co-designers of a multilingual, multimodal literacy resource bag. Using the MultiSemiotic Architecture Framework, we analyzed qualitative data to explore how collaborative text selection can advance linguistic justice in early childhood education. Findings highlight five themes that shaped intentional text selection and supported multilingual home literacy practices: content, language, cultural relevance, curricular alignment, and collaborative modifications. By centering families' cultural and linguistic resources, the project disrupted monolingual …

Despite growing evidence on the impact of intra-tumoral heterogeneity (ITH) in breast cancer (BC), its biological drivers and clinically relevant mitigation strategies remain poorly characterized, particularly in low-resource settings where spatial profiling is rarely applied. To address this gap, we conducted a comprehensive, multiplatform spatial profiling study of BC in a Kenyan population. Using the NanoString GeoMx™ Digital Spatial Profiler, we quantified 44 protein markers across 707 spatially defined, PanCK-segmented Areas of Illumination (AOIs) from 31 tumors. All tumors exhibited measurable ITH, with one-third showing marked heterogeneity. Sixteen patients exhibited two or more intrinsic subtypes within their tumors, three of …

The transition to new environments often induces stress, but relatively few studies have explored the acculturative stress among college students relocating within the same country. This study adapted and validated the Riverside Acculturation Stress Inventory to assess cross-regional acculturative stress (CAS) among college students in China. We first used confirmatory factor analysis to examine the factor structure of the CAS scale. We then determined the reliability (internal consistency) and the validity of the CAS scale by examining CAS’s relationship with sociodemographic factors and mental well-being. Finally, we tested the moderating role of self-esteem as well as the mediation pathways through …

Editor-in-Chief Romesh Nalliah uses the historical example of King Hammurabi's loan agreements to illustrate the foundational concept of risk management and insurance. He celebrates the 40th anniversary of the MDA Insurance & Financial Group, highlighting its growth into a full-service agency that addresses the specific needs of dentists. Nalliah emphasizes the "multiplicative effect" of supporting these member-governed services: they offer individual cost savings and generate non-dues revenue that funds broader MDA benefits and reduces dues. He credits the association's volunteer leadership for establishing this successful model of value-driven professional support.
