Reducing Emergency Department Boarding Using Pull-Based Throughput Intervention: Quality Improvement Project, Eunice Dundu
Reducing Emergency Department Boarding Using Pull-Based Throughput Intervention: Quality Improvement Project, Eunice Dundu
All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
Problem: Emergency department (ED) boarding increases overcrowding and delays care. A 200-bed acute care hospital in the southeastern United States has a median time from inpatient bed readiness to ED departure that exceeds its hospital benchmarks, resulting in prolonged boarding and delays. Hospital data showed a median bed-ready-to-departure time of 76 minutes, exceeding the target of less than 45 minutes. Workflow analysis identified delays in transport activation, communication, and accountability as major contributors to inefficiency.
Aim of the Project: ED throughput quality improvement project aimed to reduce the median time from when an inpatient bed is marked ready to …

Pressure Injury Prevention Bundle Implementation In An Acute Care Unit, Hannah K. Pobi
All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
Problem: Pressure Injuries are quality indicators that reflect the quality of care delivered to patients. With a hospital-acquired pressure injury rate above 12%, the project site exceeded the national benchmark average of 5-8% for acute inpatient settings. The cost of managing hospital acquired pressure injury ranges from $20,900 to $151,700 per patient, compounded by complications in a patient’s treatment plan.
Aim of the Project: To reduce the prevalence of HAPIs in a step-down unit to below 8% by implementing the Pressure Injury Prevention bundle. The PIP bundle, an evidence-based intervention, primarily aimed to educate the nursing team on its …
Identifying Palliative Care Needs In The Emergency Department, James Sullivan
Identifying Palliative Care Needs In The Emergency Department, James Sullivan
All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
This quality improvement project evaluated the implementation of the Palliative Care and Rapid Emergency Screening (P‑CaRES) tool to improve early identification of unmet palliative care (PC) needs among adults with advanced, life‑limiting illnesses presenting to a community emergency department (ED). The problem addressed was the absence of a standardized PC screening process, resulting in delayed recognition, missed referral opportunities, fragmented care, and repeated ED utilization. Guided by Plan‑Do‑Study‑Act cycles and the OhioHealth Change Management Model, the project integrated P‑CaRES into ED workflows, provided staff education, and established structured referral pathways. Over 12 weeks, clinicians completed 65 screenings; 57 patients met …

Improving Medication Reconciliation Compliance In Home Health Admissions, Paula A. Petrie-Rivas
All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
Background: Clinician compliance with medication reconciliation at a home health agency was below regulatory expectations, with agency performance significantly lower than state and national averages. Workflow inefficiencies, inconsistent clinician practices, and limited training contributed to noncompliance, increasing the risk of medication discrepancies, preventable rehospitalizations, and Medicare reimbursement penalties.
Aim: This quality improvement project implemented a standardized medication reconciliation workflow using the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s MATCH toolkit to improve clinician compliance during admission to home health.
Evidence: Literature supports structured medication reconciliation as an effective strategy to improve safety during transitions of care. The MATCH toolkit provides a …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study investigates the sociopolitical processes underlying the development and approval of marketing budgets in large multinational corporations. While prior research has focused extensively on optimizing the level and allocation of marketing budgets, little attention has been paid to the internal organizational dynamics that shape the marketing budgeting process. Drawing on the theories-in-use of both CMOs and CEOs, this study examines how these executives codevelop a calibrated marketing budget (CMKB)—a budget that aligns expected performance with allocated resources through an iterative, participative process. Field data show that CMOs deploy a set of signals to assuage CEO concerns related to goal …

Effect Of Anisotropic Hydraulic Conductivity On Groundwater Seepage Into A Rectangular Tunnel In Submerged Sand, Deki Yangzom Ghaley, Sanjay Kumar Shukla
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Managing groundwater seepage around tunnels is critical to tunnel design, particularly when the tunnel is constructed below the water table. Accurate seepage flow patterns and water inflow prediction under ordinary and critical conditions are imperative to mitigate potential tunnel construction and service disasters. In the past, an in-depth study on the anisotropic hydraulic conductivity of the soil mass that may affect the seepage condition has not been carried out. In this work, this aspect has been investigated numerically for a rectangular tunnel submerged within a homogeneous sand mass, considering the anisotropic hydraulic conductivity ratio (kz / kx, kz = vertical …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Sliding mode control (SMC) has emerged as a robust and adaptive strategy for grid-tied inverters. It has unique attributes which make it an appropriate control choice under increasingly complex power systems. However, there are a limited number of review articles which comprehensively explore the true potential of SMC for grid-tied inverter applications. This systematic review has been structured to explore SMC techniques with respect to certain challenges, i.e., stability challenges, unbalanced conditions, low inertia scenarios, and harmonics distortion. The classification of various SMC techniques is presented with respect to their control law and sliding surfaces design. The comparative analysis indicates …

Exercise-induced myokines, such as IL-6, irisin, and myostatin, play crucial roles in mediating systemic adaptations and modulating tumor progression. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on how regular moderate-intensity exercise affects the myokine network within the tumor microenvironment (TME) of solid tumors. Results from the 86 included studies indicate that structured training (aerobic: 45–65% VO2 max; resistance: 45–70% 1RM) enhances the expression of beneficial myokines that support immune surveillance, reduce inflammation, and improve muscle–tumor cross-talk. IL-6 demonstrates a dual modulatory effect on inflammation and immunity; irisin contributes to tumor apoptosis, while myostatin downregulation supports muscle integrity and metabolic balance. Evidence suggests …

Objective: Cancer survivors, defined as those living with or beyond a cancer diagnosis, experience more than double the prevalence of psychopathology when compared to the general population. Categorical diagnostic systems, such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), remain dominant in psycho-oncology despite concerns about reliability, validity, and clinical utility for this population. Dimensional frameworks, such as the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP), offer a more precise alternative; however, they have not yet been widely applied in cancer survivors. Accordingly, the objective of this research was to examine the applicability of HiTOP to cancer survivors. Methods: Data …

Formal recycling of used lead acid batteries (ULAB) is a multibillion-dollar industry, valued at US$12.12 billion in 2024, and expected to grow to more than $26 billion within eight years. Demand for recycled lead (Pb) for new batteries grows in developing countries where costs limit the uptake of lithium-ion batteries. ULAB recycling in these regions poses significant danger to human health and the environment. Stringent regulatory approaches for ULAB recycling in developing countries, intended to reduce pollution, have thus far been ineffective as they typically do not adequately cover small-scale informal recycling in rural and remote communities. We examine what …
From Hermeneutic Theory To Pedagogical Practice: Dialogue, Fusion Of Horizons, And Tradition In The Philosophy For Children Classroom, Leon Benade
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This article brings Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics into critical conversation with the pedagogical practice of philosophy in schools, focusing particularly on Philosophy for Children (P4C). While P4C offers a rich pedagogical model for developing reasonableness through the Community of Inquiry (CoI), its account of the conditions under which understanding occurs remains somewhat underdeveloped. Although some scholars have situated P4C in relation to hermeneutics, this engagement is limited. Addressing this gap, the key Gadamerian ideas of tradition, prejudice, and the fusion of horizons and dialogue are explored here to deepen and extend the theoretical considerations of inquiry in P4C. The discussion …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The efficiency of CO2 geo-sequestration relies heavily on the storage capacity and sealing integrity of the heterogeneous strata. Tight formations offer substantial advantages for long-term CO2 geological storage, however, the stratigraphic variability and lithological heterogeneity introduce substantial uncertainty in real-world engineering applications. Particularly, for tight formations with pronounced heterogeneous lithologies, traditional methods oversimplify their impact on CO2 geo-sequestration. To address this challenge and identify the most effective intervals for CO2 geo-sequestration, we investigated the middle Permian Lucaogou Formation (P2l) in the Jimusar Sag, Junggar Basin, Northwest China, a region known for its strong lithological heterogeneity. By integrating multi-scale analytical techniques, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
A fundamental limitation of modern conversational AI is its limited capacity to demonstrate sustained empathy in long-form interactions. We propose SCIRAG (Semantic Context Improvisational Retrieval-Augmented Generation), a feedback-driven retrieval framework for adaptive empathic dialogue. It employs a dual-loop retrieval framework, iteratively optimizing a static counseling dataset through user metadata and feedback memory refinement. To enhance contextual alignment, we deploy retrieval adaptation, enabling the model to retain and leverage past conversational cues based on user preferences. When integrated with Mixtral-8x7B, SCIRAG improves human-rated empathic understanding by +1.26 points and empathic response by +1.00 point on the RoPE scale, while increasing acceptability …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The northern quoll, Dasyurus hallucatus, is part of a suite of threatened native northern Australian mammals that have inappropriate fire regimes listed as a threatening process. However, fire responses reported for D. hallucatus are inconsistent among different studies. Based on the theory that the fire response of D. hallucatus will depend partially on habitat quality, we postulate that home range in high quality savannas of the north Kimberley will be small, post-breeding male mortality low and prey resources little affected by fire. Based on previous research we hypothesised that male D. hallucatus would respond to fire more than females. By …

Identification of the genomic regions that contribute to reproductive isolation and how they interact is a major goal of evolutionary genetics. Much effort has focused on locating candidate genes and potential barrier loci by scanning genomes for regions of excess differentiation (FST). An alternative, and perhaps more robust approach, is to scan for genomic regions exhibiting steep clines in allele frequency across a hybrid zone. We develop a computationally efficient method for approximating cline parameters for large number of loci, and apply it to genomic data from across a hybrid zone between flower colour varieties of Antirrhinum majus (A. m. …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose: Breast cancer has been recognised as a chronic condition, with survivors experiencing long-term physical and psychosocial effects following treatment. Supporting breast cancer survivors to self-manage their health can optimise health-related quality of life and reduce symptom burden. Self-management education (SME) has been advocated at the policy and programme level in Australian primary care, but its uptake is often limited. This study explores healthcare professionals’ (HCPs) experiences and perceptions of SME in primary care, aiming to identify factors influencing its implementation and to support survivorship care for breast cancer survivors in Australia.
Methods: A qualitative descriptive approach was adopted involving …

Transcutaneous spinal stimulation aims to target dorsal spinal roots, which deliver sensory information to the spinal cord. However, the stimulation waveform that most effectively recruits sensory fibers at the lowest intensity has not been identified. The purpose of this study was to compare conventional and high-frequency burst-modulated stimulation waveforms in their ability to recruit sensory fibers, as assessed by H-reflex threshold, recruitment characteristics, and motor fiber activation. In participants with intact neurological function (n ¼ 12), soleus H-reflex recruitment curves were recorded for 10 stimulation waveforms: a conventional waveform (400 μs), serving as the reference condition, high-frequency burst-modulated waveforms (2, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The paper features a textual analysis of the UN speeches made by the US President Donald Trump and by France’s President Macron. President Trump’s speech was made in the absence of a teleprompter and lasted almost an hour. President Macron’s speech was representative of a more standard diplomatic speech. Both speeches are analyzed using a variety of models and techniques. The analysis incorporates an exploration of Manin’s link of Zipf’s law to concepts from information theory and algorithmic complexity, Tao’s concepts applied to power laws, ‘E pluribus unum’, out of many, one, plus a completely new application of Villermaux’s universal …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Extreme weather events caused by human created climate change not only cause catastrophic impact on human and the more-than-human populations but can also trigger permanent changes to place. With these changes, stories shift, in turn influencing knowledge and cultural systems. This article is a dialogue between Natalie Davey and Renée Newman, about the role of art, story, mapping and “jarriny” (translating to totem) as a tool for education on extreme weather events and climate crisis. We also consider the vital role custodianship plays in response to and recovery from an extreme weather event, as was the case for Natalie Davey …

Background/Objectives: Effective disease-modifying therapies targeting pathogenic proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) remain limited. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of the neuroprotective, cationic arginine-rich peptide R18D to mitigate the pathogenic effects of amyloid-beta (Aβ) and tau associated with AD.
Methods: R18D was examined for its ability to inhibit Aβ aggregation in a cell-free assay, attenuate Aβ-induced cytotoxicity in MC65 cells, and suppress intracellular tau aggregation in two neural cell models. Intracellular tau aggregation was quantified using a homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence assay. Additionally, a pilot pharmacokinetic study of R18D was conducted in mice following oral gavage administration.
Results: In the …
