Impact Of Structure And Connectivity Of Thiophene-Based Bicycles Stacking With Fluoroarenes In Conjugated Materials, Elisa Guzman, Gabrielle Buell, Sashen Ruhunage, Peter Müller, Chad Risko, Samuel W. Thomas

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Noncovalent interactions between aromatic rings can dictate the crystal structures of organic optoelectronic materials. While cofacial interactions of fluorinated and non-fluorinated arenes are useful supramolecular synthons, the impacts of the structural details on these interactions remain unpredictable, particularly with the types of heterocycles common in materials derived from π-conjugated molecules. In this work, a combination of optical spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography demonstrates that both the degree of fluorination of a benzyl ester side chain and the regiochemical connectivity of a benzothiophene (BT) to an arylene-ethynylene backbone impact whether intramolecular cofacial stacking occurs or not. Surprisingly, the thienothiophene (TT) analog, which …

Examining The Relationship Between Past Involvement In Sexual Violence, Gender, And Rape Myth Acceptance In College Student-Athletes, Sarah Baker

Theses and Dissertations

Sexual violence (SV) is a persistent concern on U.S. college campuses, with student-athletes at higher risk for both perpetration and victimization. Rape myth acceptance (RMA) reflects beliefs that excuse or downplay SV, but it is unclear how these beliefs relate to student-athletes’ personal experiences with SV. This study examined RMA based on past SV involvement and gender, with attention to individuals reporting both perpetration and victimization. Participants were 350 NCAA Division III student-athletes who completed measures of SV perpetration and victimization, RMA, and sexism. Analyses evaluated differences in RMA by past involvement in sexual violence and gender while controlling for …

Political Science Faculty Publications

Public health crises demand timely surveillance of disease and interventions. This was a substantial challenge during COVID-19 in the United States due to the federalized response. States varied widely in infection and vaccination rates. Continuous state-level probability samples for tracking were unavailable and would have been logistically and financially onerous. Administrative data eventually became inaccurate. Thus, the authors evaluate the accuracy of large-scale opt-in non-probability state and national samples (from the Covid States Project) that estimated infection and vaccination rates on a near-continuous basis. The estimates aligned closely with a high-quality national probability sample and state-level administrative data (when such …

Double-Scoring: Reliable Extraction Of Strong Lottery Tickets, Bryce Christopherson, Jack Baretz, Darian Colgrove, Salah Dandan Jul 2026

Double-Scoring: Reliable Extraction Of Strong Lottery Tickets, Bryce Christopherson, Jack Baretz, Darian Colgrove, Salah Dandan

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The lottery ticket hypothesis proposes that large random neural networks contain sparse subnetworks that can match the performance of dense models after compara- ble training. A stronger version asserts that sufficiently overparameterized random networks contain subnetworks that are already accurate before any weight training. Existing theory establishes that such strong lottery tickets exist, but reliable ex- traction remains difficult. We revisit edge-popup, a frozen-weight score-training method for extracting strong tickets, and identify layerwise sparsity selection as a central bottleneck. We introduce double-scoring, an augmented score-space parameterization that replaces a layerwise sparsity search with optimization over enlarged score tensors. We prove …

Identifying Failure Behaviors In Stereolithography From Varied Print Orientations, Kevin Veltre Jul 2026

Identifying Failure Behaviors In Stereolithography From Varied Print Orientations, Kevin Veltre

Theses and Dissertations

Stereolithography (SLA) is an additive manufacturing (AM) technique that utilizes photopolymerization to create three-dimensional shapes by strategically printing layers of material. Printing parameters such as layer orientation, print resolution and post cure can affect a specimen’s homogeneity, longevity and mechanical characteristics. Because of this variability, print parameters must be carefully considered when designing products and print processes for desired components, as manufacturers often fail to include all relevant print settings when advertising mechanical properties. For this study, 130 SLA-printed specimens were created with 100-micron print layer thickness and print orientations varying between 0 and 90, including intermediate orientations, to observe …
