Psychosocial stressors are known to promote cocaine craving and relapse in humans but are infrequently employed in preclinical relapse models. Consequently, the underlying neural circuitry by which these stressors drive cocaine seeking has not been thoroughly explored. Using Fos expression analyses, we sought to examine whether the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) or periaqueductal gray (PAG), two critical components of the brain's hypothalamic defense system, are activated during psychosocial stress-induced cocaine seeking. Adult male and female rats self-administered cocaine (0.5 mg/kg/inf IV, fixed-ratio 1 schedule, 2 h/session) over 20 sessions. On sessions 11, 14, 17, and 20, a tactile cue was present …

Neuromuscular Response To High-Velocity, Low-Amplitude Spinal Manipulation—An Overview, Murdi Alanazi, Brian Degenhardt Do, Gwyn Kelley-Franklin, James Cox Do, Laura Lipke, William Reed Do
Library Scholarship
The clinical use of spinal manipulation to treat musculoskeletal conditions has nearly tripled in the United States since 1980, and it is currently recommended by most global clinical guidelines as a conservative treatment for musculoskeletal pain, despite a lack of knowledge concerning its mechanisms of action. This overview highlights evidence of direct neuromuscular responses to high-velocity, low-amplitude spinal manipulation (HVLA-SM) as delivered by chiropractic, osteopathic, and physical therapy clinicians, with an intent to foster greater interprofessional dialogue and collaborative research to better address current gaps in mechanistic knowledge of the neuromuscular response to HVLA-SM. Three databases (PubMed, CINAHL Ultimate (EBSCO), …

Optimal Reconstruction Of The Hellings And Downs Correlation, Bruce Allen, Joseph D. Romano
Optimal Reconstruction Of The Hellings And Downs Correlation, Bruce Allen, Joseph D. Romano
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) detect gravitational waves (GWs) via the correlations they create in the arrival times of pulses from different pulsars. The mean correlation, a function of the angle between the directions to two pulsars, was predicted in 1983 by Hellings and Downs (HD). Observation of this angular pattern is crucial evidence that GWs are present, so PTAs “reconstruct the HD curve” by estimating the correlation using pulsar pairs separated by similar angles. Several studies have examined the amount by which this curve is expected to differ from the HD mean. The variance arises because (a) a finite set …

Introduction: Managing clinical trials is a complex process requiring careful integration of human, technology, compliance, and operations for success. We collaborated with experts to develop a multi-axial Clinical Trials Management Ecosystem (CTME) maturity model (MM) to help institutions identify best practices for CTME capabilities. Methods: A working group of research informaticists was established. An online session on maturity models was hosted, followed by a review of the candidate domain axes and finalization of the axes. Next, maturity level attributes were defined for min/max levels (level 1 and level 5) for each axis of the CTME MM, followed by the intermediate …

Evaluating Efficiency In Laboratory Methods For Testing Sexual Assault Kits, Renee Mercer
D.U.Quark
Sexual assault kits (SAKs) are a collection of physical evidence from a sexual assault victim. SAK testing provides victims justice and helps prevent repeated crime through the addition of perpetrator DNA into criminal databases. With large numbers of SAKs being collected yearly, the limitations of common laboratory procedures and resources create a backlog of SAKs. For that reason, there is a need for more efficient testing. This review evaluates three different methods of testing throughout this process. Reverse Transcription Recombinase Polymerase Amplification and Proximity Ligation Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction confirms body fluid identification. The Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification Assay reaction amplifies …

The discovery of novel superconducting materials is a long-standing challenge in materials science, with a wealth of potential for applications in energy, transportation and computing. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled expediting the search for new materials by efficiently utilizing vast materials databases. In this study, we developed an approach based on deep learning (DL) to predict new superconducting materials. We have synthesized a compound derived from our DL network and confirmed its superconducting properties in agreement with our prediction. Our approach is also compared to previous work based on random forests (RFs). In particular, RFs require knowledge …

"During the Second World War, Nazi authorities appointed 'Jewish Councils' (Judenräte) to help with the administration of the non- ghettoized and ghettoized Jewish communities in regions occupied by Germany or in the German sphere of influence. Ghettoization was envisaged as an intermediary (and convenient) stage before the implementation of a 'final solution' to the so-called Jewish Question. During and especially after the war, many Jews criticized members of the Judenräte, the ghetto police, and prisoner functionaries as Nazi collaborators and traitors. After the defeat of Nazism, some of the surviving “Jewish Council” members were attacked, marginalized, or …

Background/Objectives: Immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP) is a rare, chronically relapsing disorder that causes life-threatening thrombotic microangiopathy. Many survivors in clinical remission show evidence of ongoing silent cerebral infarction and neurocognitive deficits. Prospective longitudinal studies of this population are needed to acquire a complete understanding of the mechanism behind this ongoing neurologic injury. We aimed to assess the feasibility of a multicenter prospective study of neuropsychological and cognitive function in iTTP survivors in remission and examine novel biomarkers.
Methods: We aimed to enroll 50 iTTP patients across three USTMA consortium sites between 2019 and 2022 in a 24-month …

Background: Endogenous retrovirus (ERV) elements are genomic footprints of ancestral retroviral infections within the human genome. While the dysregulation of ERV transcription has been linked to immune cell infiltration in various cancers, its relationship with immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) response in solid tumors, particularly metastatic clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), remains inadequately explored.
Methods: This study analyzed patients with metastatic ccRCC from two prospective clinical trials, encompassing 181 patients receiving nivolumab in the CheckMate trials (-009 to -010 and -025) and 48 patients treated with the ipilimumab-nivolumab combination in the BIONIKK trial. ERV expression was quantified using the ERVmap algorithm …

The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) is a widely used self-report measure of subjective well-being, but studies of its measurement invariance across a large number of nations remain limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset–with data collected between 2020 and 2022 –to assess measurement invariance of the SWLS across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). All participants completed the SWLS under largely uniform conditions. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that configural and metric invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional …

Sohal's book explores early to mid-twentieth century Muslim thinkers who rejected communal separatism in favour of a secular nationalism that upheld a unified vision of India. But what was the ideological enemy of the Muslim secular in the high noon of anti-colonial nationalism? Crucially, secularism itself lacks a stable conceptual ‘other’. Often, this space is occupied by ‘communalism’, a unique and ambiguous Indian nomenclature that is pejoratively and variously ascribed to minority positions, exclusive majoritarianism, and anti-nationalism. As a result, despite Sohal’s careful identification of intellectual differences between the thinkers, the master noun he uses to organise them conceals more …

Integrative Approaches To Climate Resilience Planning: Application Of A Plan Evaluation Framework, Maulsri Jha
Dissertations and Theses
In the last two decades, urban governments have streamlined and prioritized the creation and implementation of climate resilience plans to cater to the communities' vulnerabilities. Existing research illustrates that there is a gap in understanding how, or if, empirical (evidence-based) data are incorporated into the design and implementation of such plans and the extent to which their inclusion impacts outcomes in terms of vulnerability reduction. There is also a gap in the systematic study of their outcomes in terms of community resilience, and whether equity and environmental justice are promoted as priorities.
The purpose of the research is to understand …
Bringing Matter, To Matter: ‘Wild Ideas’ About ‘Readiness’ In The Transition From The Early Years Foundation Stage To The Key Stage 1 National Curriculum In England, Katherine Evans
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
‘Readiness’ and transition are topics of ongoing debate in relation to early childhood education. Critiques of schoolification and the impact of a ‘school-readiness’ agenda on policy and practice point to a tendency for increased formalisation of learning as children progress through their early years of schooling. In England, these first years of school-based education involve a transition between different and distinct educational frameworks, from the Early Years Foundation Stage to the National Curriculum in Key Stage 1. This transition can be problematic as tensions emerge between different pedagogical traditions, thus creating a potentially challenging experience for children as they progress …

The high level of psychological issues faced by young adults in Indonesia is a pressing problem that needs immediate attention, as it can impact an individual's life satisfaction. The strategy employed in this PKM (Student Creativity Program) is mindfulness practice using a keychain. The keychain, designed for a week-long mindfulness practice, is named "Mindkey." The implementation of this PKM involved four stages: preparation, execution, realization, and evaluation. The execution stage involved 213 young adult participants to select the final design of the Mindkey product from three available designs: one created by the PKM Team, one by a freelance design service, …
