In Silico Analysis Of Cd40 Mutations And Their Implications For Quinoline-Benzoic Acid Derivatives Based Therapy In Graves' Disease, Luluk Yunaini, Diyah Kristanty, Puji Sari, Surya Dwira, Dwi Anita Suryandari, Arleni Bustami
Indonesian Journal of Medical Chemistry and Bioinformatics
Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the CD40-CD154 interaction plays a critical role in T-cell activation. In this study, in silico methods were employed to analyze the binding interactions of quinoline-benzoic acid derivatives (NSB, FSB, and NQB) with the CD40 receptor and to investigate the implications of specific CD40 mutations for drug efficacy. In this reseach conducted by molecular simulation approach with molecular docking Results Mutation analysis of CD40 identified alterations in key residues, such as R203C, which may impact ligand-independent activation and downstream TRAF binding, crucial for signal transduction. These findings highlight the therapeutic potential of quinoline-benzoic …

We study behavior in a trust game where first-movers initially have a higher endowment than second-movers but the occurrence of a positive random shock can eliminate this inequality by increasing the endowment of the second-mover before the decision of the first-mover. We find that second-movers return less (i.e., they are less trustworthy) when they have a lower endowment than first-movers, compared with the case in which first and second-movers have the same endowment. In addition, second-movers who experience the positive shock return more than second-movers who have the same endowment as the first-mover from the outset. First-movers do not seem …

Environmental drivers such as salinity can impact the timing and duration of developmental events in aquatic early life stages of crustaceans, including terrestrial crabs of the family Gecarcinidae. Low salinity delays larval development in land crabs, but nothing is known about its influence on the crucial late-stage encapsulated embryonic or immediate post-hatch development. Therefore, we exposed fertilised late-stage embryos of the Christmas Island red crab (Gecarcoidea natalis) to differing salinities (100%, 75%, 50% or 25% sea water) for 24 h during their spawning period and measured some key developmental and physiological traits. We found no effect of salinity on time …

When dielectrics are hit with intense infrared (IR) laser pulses, transient metalization can occur. The initial attosecond dynamics behind this metallization are not entirely understood. Therefore, simulations are needed to understand this process and to help interpret experimental observations of it, such as with attosecond transient absorption (ATA). In this paper, we present first-principles simulations of ATA based on bulk-mimicking clusters and real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT), with Koopmans-tuned range-separated hybrid functionals and Gaussian basis sets. Our method gives good agreement with the experiment for the breakdown threshold in silica and diamond. This breakdown voltage corresponds to a Keldysh …

In 1968, Congress passed the Anti-Drug Abuse Act (“ADAA”) in response to the drug overdose of Len Bias, a basketball star at the University of Maryland. The Act imposed harsh sentences for crack cocaine offenses; a person charged with possession of crack cocaine faced the same mandatory minimum prison sentence as someone charged with possession of one hundred times more powered cocaine. For example, a person charged with carrying five grams of crack cocaine would receive the same sentence as someone carrying five hundred grams of powdered cocaine. Historically, the enforcement of drug-related crimes disproportionately targeted Black Americans, and this …

The Biological Intersection Between Chemotherapy-Related Cognitive Impairment And Alzheimer Disease, Matthew Torre, Camila A Zanella, Mel B Feany
Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications
Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia and one of the leading causes of death in elderly patients. The number of patients with AD in the United States is projected to double by 2060. Thus, understanding modifiable risk factors for AD is an urgent public health priority. In parallel with the number of patients with AD, the number of cancer survivors is estimated to increase significantly, and up to 80% of cancer patients treated with chemotherapy will develop cognitive deficits, termed chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment. This review discusses biologically plausible pathways underlying both disorders, with the goal of …

Biological nitrogen fixation is the conversion of dinitrogen (N2) gas into bioavailable nitrogen by microorganisms with consequences for primary production, ecosystem function, and global climate. Here we present a compiled dataset of 4793 nitrogen fixation (N2-fixation) rates measured in the water column and benthos of inland and coastal systems via the acetylene reduction assay, 15N2 labeling, or N2/Ar technique. While the data are distributed across seven continents, most observations (88%) are from the northern hemisphere. 15N2 labeling accounted for 67% of water column measurements, while the acetylene reduction assay accounted for 81% of benthic N2-fixation observations. Dataset median area-, volume-, …

Queer East African writers like Diriye Osman and Afdhere Jama instantiate Christopher Ian Foster’s 2019 assertion that ‘neoliberal globalization and the management of movement— immigration—cannot be disentangled from heteronationalist discourses’. The criticism that one read years ago, and still reads, that the gay and lesbian “lifestyle” is a Western imposition on African identities, and that those Africans who espouse such identities for themselves are inherently un-African or even anti-African, is now ensconced in the laws of many African nations, making it dangerous to remain in one’s native land if one expresses—publicly—a sexuality that is non-normative or non-binary. The former is …

The conservation of freshwater turtle species depends on precise and effective monitoring techniques. Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis is a potential method for identifying cryptic and elusive turtle species in aquatic ecosystems. eDNA analysis can help to identify key regions for conservation efforts and monitor changes in population levels over time. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a rapid eDNA detection method for the yellow mud turtle (Kinosternon flavescens, an indicator species that is endangered in some states in the USA), which inhabits local oxbow lakes (e.g., resacas) in Cameron County, South Texas. A species-specific nested PCR …

This report begins with a literature review of computing education in Africa. We found a substantial body of work, scattered over more than 80 venues, which we have brought together here for the first time. Several important themes emerge in this dataset, including the need to contextualise computing education. In the second part of this report we investigate contextualisation further. We present a pilot study, grounded in the literature review, of the development of course materials, sample code, and programming assignments for introductory programming, contextualised for six African countries: Botswana, Egypt, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zambia. We include the …

Long–Term Performance And Stability Of Implanted Neural Interfaces In Individuals With Lower Limb Loss, Eileen Petros, Michael Miller, Jeremy Dunning, Gilles Pinault, Dustin Tyler, Ronald Triolo, Hamid Charkhkar
Student Scholarship
Objective. High-density nerve cuffs have been successfully utilized to restore somatosensation in individuals with lower-limb loss by interfacing directly with the peripheral nervous system. Elicited sensations via these devices have improved various functional outcomes, including standing balance, walking symmetry, and navigating complex terrains. Deploying neural interfaces in the lower limbs of individuals with limb loss presents unique challenges, particularly due to repetitive muscle contractions and the natural range of motion in the knee and hip joints for transtibial and transfemoral amputees, respectively. This study characterizes the long-term performance of these peripheral nerve interfaces, which is crucial for informing design modifications …

CD73 is ubiquitously expressed and regulates critical functions across multiple organ systems. The sequential actions of CD39 and CD73 accomplish the conversion of adenosine triphosphate to adenosine and shift the adenosine triphosphate-driven proinflammatory immune cell milieu toward an anti-inflammatory state. This immunological switch is a major mechanism by which regulatory T (Treg) cells control inflammation. Foxp3 engages in Treg development and function. Foxp3 mutations result in the scurfy (SF) mouse phenotype and a rapidly lethal lymphoproliferative syndrome. We generated double knockout (KO) mouse (CD73KOSF) by breeding heterozygous Foxp3sf/J females to CD73KO male mice to remove host CD73. We initially aimed …

Safeguarding Submarine Cables And Pipelines In Times Of Peace And War, Raul (Pete) Pedrozo
International Law Studies
Incidents involving damage to undersea infrastructure illustrate the vulnerability of submarine cables and pipelines. While damage can occur accidentally in peacetime, recent incidents suggest cables and pipelines are being systematically targeted and that the resulting damage is not accidental or the result of poor seamanship. Most undersea infrastructure can also be attacked as a military objective in wartime. Peacetime adversaries or opposing belligerents during an armed conflict can easily damage undersea infrastructure to further their political, strategic, or wartime objectives. These incidents also highlight the inadequacy of coastal State authority under international law to take measures against foreign-flagged vessels intentionally …

A new proliferation of optical instruments that can be attached to towers over or within ecosystems, or ‘proximal’ remote sensing, enables a comprehensive characterization of terrestrial ecosystem structure, function, and fluxes of energy, water, and carbon. Proximal remote sensing can bridge the gap between individual plants, site-level eddy-covariance fluxes, and airborne and spaceborne remote sensing by providing continuous data at a high-spatiotemporal resolution. Here, we review recent advances in proximal remote sensing for improving our mechanistic understanding of plant and ecosystem processes, model development, and validation of current and upcoming satellite missions. We provide current best practices for data availability …

The transportation industry has been criticized for its hefty environmental footprint, questionable social practices, and lack of transparency regarding governance. Thus, more companies have begun including Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues in their strategies. Research has shown that effectively integrating ESG into business models can improve financial performance by tackling environmental, social, and governance challenges. This sustainable progress can be quantified by considering the extent to which the products or services produced by the firm’s harm or benefit social welfare. The current research paper examines ESG and financial performance over time in the Transportation Industry by comparing data from …

This study examines optimal distinctiveness strategies in the Young Adult (YA) literature market, analyzing bestseller data across visual representation, author concentration, content diversification, and linguistic evolution.
