Who’S To Blame? The Politics Of Recognition In Ayta Land Claims Under Ipra, John Albert R. Dela Rosa Jul 2026

Who’S To Blame? The Politics Of Recognition In Ayta Land Claims Under Ipra, John Albert R. Dela Rosa

Social Sciences and Development Review

With the enactment of the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act (IPRA) in 1997, the Philippines became one of the first Asian countries to legally recognize and protect the rights of Indigenous Peoples. Yet many Indigenous communities continue to struggle to realize the very promises that the law was intended to fulfill. This paper therefore examines how IPRA has shaped—and continues to shape—the Ayta’s efforts to assert ownership and control over their ancestral domain. Drawing on multi-sited ethnography conducted in selected Ayta communities, the study reveals that IPRA remains a paradox. While it has heightened the Ayta’s awareness of their rights and …

Pagtataguyod Sa Búhay, Dangal, At Ginhawa: Ang Pilosopiya Ng Kasaysayan Ng Pilipinas, Jon E. Royeca

Social Sciences and Development Review

Among the studies on our nation’s history, the schools of historical thought that have long inspired and guided us while we delve into the past stand out. There are the Filipino lens by Rizal, the “nationalist history” by Agoncillo and Constantino, the “history from below” by Ileto, the pantayong pananaw (from-ours-to-ours perspective) by Salazar, and the kaloobang bayan (nation’s virtues) by Villan. Laudable are these contributions by our esteemed historians, since they help us in digging deeper into what has our race experienced. However, by and large, the studies have not yet fully grasped what our nation’s history is really …

Paghu-Bad Sa Kainayahan Sa Piling Kuwentong Pambata: Pagpopook Sa Lumad Ng Mindanao, Alyssa M. Teodoro, Federico B. Rivera Jr., Jamil Q. Carvajal

Social Sciences and Development Review

This study examines intersemiotic translation (from text to image) in three selected radical children’s stories from the Batang Katutubo Series published by Adarna House that depict the conditions of the Lumad communities in Mindanao: Sula Wants to Go to School, Laleng and the Mobile School, and Defenders of the Ancestral Land. The primary theoretical framework employed is Pereira’s (2008) methodology for translating words into images, which consists of three approaches: the literal translation of textual elements, the emphasis of specific narrative elements, and the adaptation of images to convey a particular ideology or artistic perspective. Roman Jakobson’s (1959) theory of …

The Student Performer's Guide To Creating A Consortium, Jaycee Swan Jul 2026

The Student Performer's Guide To Creating A Consortium, Jaycee Swan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Among advanced musicians who advocate for increasing diversity in classically oriented repertoire, music commissioning is a common practice. Funding a composer to write original music, however, seems out of reach for student musicians or those without the financial means and know-how. A more affordable and therefore accessible alternative to the stand-alone commission is the consortium-based commission for new music. In this lecture portion of a “lecture-recital with written document,” I (a) document my experience in spearheading a new music consortium and, from that experience, (b) present a guide for facilitating a new music consortium.

The project was the impetus for …

School of Medicine Publications

Advanced HIV infection is associated with profound immunosuppression, predisposing patients to opportunistic infections such as Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC). PJP can cause severe respiratory disease, including acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), while disseminated MAC may contribute to systemic illness and pulmonary complications. Concurrent infection with both pathogens is uncommon but may precipitate severe pulmonary failure. A man in his 40s presented with unintentional weight loss, fatigue, oral thrush, and progressive dyspnea. On arrival, oxygen saturation was 86% on room air, requiring high-flow nasal cannula. Laboratory evaluation revealed profound immunosuppression (CD4 7 cells/mm3, HIV RNA 123,000 …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Numerical modelling is important in many fluid dynamics applications, yet robust benchmarking is required to quantify uncertainty. This study presents results from a blind comparative benchmark of isothermal sloshing in a circular tank. Sloshing is relevant to many engineering applications, including offshore shipping, where vessel motions can excite internal fluid motion, generating impact loads and affecting stability. A series of horizontal and vertical excitation cases of increasing complexity are considered. Participant solutions for free surface displacements are compared against physical model data that was withheld until after submission. Across all cases, the numerical models generally capture the dominant frequency. Typical …

Coastal cities in Southeast Asia face dual challenges of rapid urbanization and increasing climate pressures, demanding robust integration of risk assessment into spatial planning. This study assesses the vulnerability of Bandar Lampung City's coastal area to extreme waves and abrasion, analyzing implications for its spatial plan. Using a standard hazard index and a spatial overlay against the city's Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW), the research identifies a 'Medium' hazard classification across all four studied sub-districts. Crucially, this classification is not driven by significant hydrodynamic forces but is substantially amplified by anthropogenic vulnerabilities. A development-centric spatial policy has led to the dominance …

Through The Arena: A Marxist Strategic-Relational Perspective On East Asian Regional Trade Architecture, John H. Limaldi Jul 2026

Through The Arena: A Marxist Strategic-Relational Perspective On East Asian Regional Trade Architecture, John H. Limaldi

Journal of Critical Global Issues

This paper critically assesses the dominant regional trade architecture that impacts East Asia, focusing on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and its U.S.-bastardized version, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Using a strategic-relational approach grounded in Marxist theory, the paper examines how these agreements impact the relationship between the Capitalist State and Capital. It argues that international economic architecture in the neoliberal era produces state effects that weaken national sovereignty to the benefit of capital and the detriment of labor. The paper concludes with recommendations for a new regional trade architecture that prioritizes labor rights, democratic accountability, and …

Modeling Of Air-Water Filled Rubber Dam Under Hydrostatic Conditions, Qusay Khaleel, Thair Khayyun, Khudhayer Abdullah

Engineering and Technology Journal

Inflatable dams, also called rubber dams, are flexible cylindrical inflatable and deflatable structures attached to a rigid base; these dams are basically cylindrical tubes made of rubberized material and inflated by air, water, or a combination of the two. In this paper, the air/water inflatable dam was studied and analyzed numerically using ANSYS software. The 3-parameter Mooney-Rivlin Model was used to model the rubber material of the dam. At first, a physical model from literature was used to calibrate the results of the ANSYS software, and then a new model was analyzed with different dimensions and conditions. Thirty-six simulations were …

Size Effect On The Shear Strength Of Reinforced Concrete Beams, Hind Jaber, Kaiss Sarsam, Bassman Muhammad Jul 2026

Size Effect On The Shear Strength Of Reinforced Concrete Beams, Hind Jaber, Kaiss Sarsam, Bassman Muhammad

Engineering and Technology Journal

According to research, as the depth of a beam increases, the section's shear strength can be expected to decrease. The size effect is a phrase that has been used to describe this tendency. Testing of unreinforced specimens under shear has also shown that the shear strength might be lower than what is typically anticipated in the design. As a result, it is critical to comprehend the behavior of these structures, as they may be influenced by a size impact. Sixteen reinforced concrete beams of different rectangular cross-sections without stirrups were tested. The tested beams were simply supported made of high-strength …
