Mary, Undoer Of Knots: Unraveling Best Practices For Unwanted Donations And Deaccessioned Collection Items In A Catholic Library, Sarah Burke Cahalan, Kayla Harris

When humorist Tommy Tighe tweeted that he is “so Catholic I bury old parish bulletins instead of throwing them out whenever I clean out the van, just in case,”1 many on #CatholicTwitter felt a twinge of recognition. In addition to the human tendency to accumulate material things, there is also legitimate concern in a Catholic context about discarding materials associated with the practice of faith. The parish bulletin is an extreme example; we can safely relegate that to the recycle bin once we have read about the ladies’ breakfast and the Christmas wreath fundraiser. In the routine practice of the …

While religion has typically been found to foster assimilation among immigrant newcomers, Islamophobia is rampant and threatens to challenge this process. This dissertation project intervenes in this empirical puzzle by asking the following research questions: How do we explain the conscious attempt by second generation Muslim parents to foster a distinctly Muslim and American identity among their third-generation children? More specifically, how have the parenting decisions of upper-middle class, second-generation Muslim Americans …

The Performance And Patronage Of Baloch Culture Through Music (And Related Arts) In The Eastern Arabian Peninsula, George Murer

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is a study of Baloch musical—and ritual—idioms as cultivated (and variously innovated, embellished, patronized, and reconstructed) in the relatively prosperous and cosmopolitan urban environments of the coastal Eastern Arabian Peninsula—the third major concentration of Baloch population after Balochistan and Karachi. Due to historical and geographic particulars, the origins of Peninsular Baloch communities lie primarily in the Makran region that extends along the Arabian Sea coast and across the political boundary separating Iran and Pakistan. If musical activities play a significant role in orienting Baloch communities socially and politically, what are the presentational strategies implied in the foregrounding of …

By analysing the Qur'an and hadiths, as well as a series of interviews, this article shows that arguments promoting gender inequality are founded on the deliberate selection of specific Qur'anic …

In Bangladesh, sharia law goes hand in hand with the statutory laws of the land. These laws are both conjointly used to regulate and monitor the issues of divorce among Muslims of the country. Women’s power to exercise the tawfiz, however, depends solely on the will of their husbands. Although Muslim women are capable of repudiating their marriages by the process of khula or mubarat, these …

Books As Objects Of Exchange: A Study Of Cross-Cultural Interaction And Connected Systems Between The Mughals And Ottomans, Ankita Choudhary

Madison Historical Review

The cross-cultural relations between the Ottomans and their contemporaneous Islamic states of the Mughals, Uzbeks, and Khans of Crimea have mainly remained a desideratum, obscured by the modern boundaries of a nation-state. An examination of existing communication networks and cultural linkages renders a global dimension to the medieval Islamic empires united by a prevalent literary culture and shared connective systems. The availability of Persian manuscripts of South Asian origin in the Turkish museum, existing diplomatic ties with the Mughals alluded by Naimur Rahman Farooqi (Mughal-Ottoman Relations), and the confrontation with the Safavids indicate that conduits of interactions existed at both …
