The Trend Of Dagestan’S Young Moslem Generation Towards Digital Platforms And The Responsibility Of Local Ulama Through Social Media, Yasmin Mumtazah, Ahmad Fahrurodji

International Review of Humanities Studies

This study discussed the tendency of the young moslem generation of Dagestan in using social media such as YouTube, Instagram, and VKontakte. The goal of this research was to answer the responsibility of related ulama on the digital platform used by Dagestan's young generation. The netnographic method was employed as a tool to assist researchers in communicating via digital platforms. According to the findings of the netnographic research, social media is not a solution to the problems of Dagestan Muslims. Although social media was a gathering place for the younger generation to learn about Islam, this did not guarantee that …

A Universe Of Mirrors: The Mirror Metaphor In Ibn ʿArabī’S Thought In Relation To Ontology, Knowledge, And Perfection, Basma Eletreby Jan 2023

A Universe Of Mirrors: The Mirror Metaphor In Ibn ʿArabī’S Thought In Relation To Ontology, Knowledge, And Perfection, Basma Eletreby

Theses and Dissertations

The mirror metaphor is ubiquitous in sufi texts. It operates uniquely in Ibn ʿArabī’s thought and writings as a representation of his conception of the cosmos. Being, knowledge, and perfection are among the seminal themes of al-Shaykh al-Akbar’s thought, and the mirror metaphor is employed in revealing their reality in his writings. As opposed to Unity of Being, a term that Ibn ʿArabī does not employ, the mirror embodies the pillars of Ibn ʿArabī’s conception of Being through representing the quintessential huwa lā huwa, the configuration of oneness and manyness, and most importantly, the definition of the relation between God …

An Analysis Of The Ash’Ari-Mu’Tazilite Conflict In The Ḥāshiya Of Ibn Al- Munayyir In Al-Kashshāf By Al-Zamakhsharī, Nabil Haskanbancha Jan 2023

An Analysis Of The Ash’Ari-Mu’Tazilite Conflict In The Ḥāshiya Of Ibn Al- Munayyir In Al-Kashshāf By Al-Zamakhsharī, Nabil Haskanbancha

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I analyze the Sunni Ash’ari response to the Mu’tazilite Qurʾan commentary al- Kashshāf written by al-Zamakhsharī (d.538/1144), and the significant role of the gloss commentary (hashiyā) in highlighting the theological debates between Ash’ari and Mu’tazilite scholars. Alongside the main commentary, this thesis demonstrates the pivotal role of the hashiyā in Islamic studies through its intersection with theology and philology, uncovering active debates on the critical interpretations of the text by exegetes. Al-Kashshāf is the most commented text in the tafsir genre despite its Mu’tazilite influence, mostly receiving criticisms from conservative Sunni scholars. The first Ash’ari scholar to …

The Phenomenon Of Stigmatization: The Case Oh Delinquency And Repeated Deeds In Tunisian Society, Ramzi Tej Jan 2023

The Phenomenon Of Stigmatization: The Case Oh Delinquency And Repeated Deeds In Tunisian Society, Ramzi Tej

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

The violations of regulatory rules, martial and religious laws, and social mores were among the reasons that led to the spread of various social phenomena. The latter contributed to social communication disorder and created immense abysses within societies such as immorality, violence and delinquency. Based on the explanatory theories of criminology or criminal sociology, the stigma of deviance was classified as a psychosocial disorder that the stigmatized suffers from, which had been confirmed by various researches starting from 1930s till 1950s. However, sociologists and experts in historical anthropology surpassed the concepts of linguistic terms, which were chiefly investigated by psychologists, …

Nephi’S Later Reflections On The Tree Of Life Vision, Michael B. Parker Jan 2023

Nephi’S Later Reflections On The Tree Of Life Vision, Michael B. Parker

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

An interesting phenomenon concerning 1 and 2 Nephi is that parts of the latter book draw on the tree of life vision that Nephi and his father shared, as recorded in 1 Nephi 8, 11–15. In an earlier FARMS Update, John A. Tvedtnes demonstrated that Nephi drew on this vision when composing the psalm in 2 Nephi 4. Further study suggests the likelihood that Nephi’s exhortation in 2 Nephi 31 was similarly informed by that sublime vision.

Some Remarks On The Translation Of The Term Ilm Al-Kalām Into English, Ayman Hammoudeh Haj-Yasīn Jan 2023

Some Remarks On The Translation Of The Term Ilm Al-Kalām Into English, Ayman Hammoudeh Haj-Yasīn

Al-Balqa Journal for Research and Studies البلقاء للبحوث والدراسات

The aim of this study is twofold. First, it aims to clarify the meaning of the Arabic term llm al-kalām with reference to modern scholarship of the field of Islamic Studies. The second one is to examine the translation of this term into English. The study strives to show that the translation of this term is influenced by dominant interpretations in the target language and culture, making it clear that translators do more than establishing linguistic equivalence between two terms. Translators, it is argued, negotiate not only two languages and two cultures, but also different and competing interpretations (ideas, values, …

How Al-Farabi’S Interpretative Method Can Engage With Aristotle’S Method In Cognition And Practical Philosophy, Meysam Shirvani Jan 2023

How Al-Farabi’S Interpretative Method Can Engage With Aristotle’S Method In Cognition And Practical Philosophy, Meysam Shirvani

Comparative Philosophy

Following Aristotle, al-Farabi divides philosophy into theoretical and practical each of which requires some specific methodology both in interpretation and cognition. Based on this division, there may arguably be four methodologies for four parts: 1) cognition of theoretical philosophy 2) interpretation of practical philosophy 3) cognition of practical philosophy 4) interpretation of practical philosophy. This paper focuses on the last one: the methodology of interpreting practical philosophy. Al-Farabi has an undeniably significant contribution to practical philosophy as a commentator on Greek philosophy and as a founder. In this paper, I investigate how al-Farabi (870-950 AD) read classical practical philosophy to …

A Trinitarian Pneumatology For Evangelization In Asia, Renato Taib Oliveros Jan 2023

A Trinitarian Pneumatology For Evangelization In Asia, Renato Taib Oliveros

Landas

Asian religions may differ in their belief in the Spirit yet the Spirit is the same Spirit that has been present amongst Asians since creation. In Redemptoris Missio, St. John Paul II acknowledges that the Holy Spirit is active in the heart of every person and that the Spirit’s activity can also affect “society and history, peoples, cultures and religions.” The Spirit of God communicates the Word as the Christ incarnate, the same Word revealed by the Spirit to non-Christians as divine wisdom and guidance. The Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of Christ is the Spirit of God for …

Aptep In The Islamic City Of Marawi, Renato Taib Oliveros

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

In August 2022, the Asia Pacific Theological Encounter Programme (APTEP) sent ten (10) Jesuit scholastics from Arrupe House to Mindanao to live life with Muslims in the Islamic City of Marawi. For the scholastics, it would be a revisit to the 1850-1950 Jesuit mission in Dansalan before it was renamed to Marawi in 1956. In 1923, Dansalan got its first residentpriest with the arrival of Father Joseph Reith, SJ. He started and eventually completed the construction of the parish church dedicated to Maria Auxiliadora in 1934. He was appointed, thereafter, as its first parish priest. For the scholastics visiting the …

Beautiful Patience, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2023

Beautiful Patience, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Believers in the God of Abraham — who include not only Jews and Christians but also Muslims — are exhorted to call upon him every day, as well as in times of need. We are promised that he will respond to petitionary prayers. Moreover, we are assured that, in the end, believers will prosper, that their faith or trust in him will prove justified. But we are not promised that rewards, compensation, or justice will come to us on our mortal timetable — and this raises sometimes burningly acute questions about Providence and even, for more than a few, about …

Consumer Protection In Islamic Jurisprudence: The Case Of Genetically Modified Food, Gihad Omran Elbashir Jan 2023

Consumer Protection In Islamic Jurisprudence: The Case Of Genetically Modified Food, Gihad Omran Elbashir

Journal of Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal for Humanities and Educational Sciences

The goal of this research is to examine how Islamic jurisprudence can provide answers to questions about genetically modified foods by combining Islamic Fiqh and scientific knowledge to protect consumers from their harmful effects. The research problem arises from the fact that consumers, in an Islamic state and elsewhere, face similar issues that must be addressed by governments and individuals. Islam, as a religion, provides a comprehensive framework for protecting the rights of consumers. Islamic jurisprudence offers guidelines for creating an environment where consumers› interests are optimally protected. These guidelines are based on the divine principles established by Allah, who …

Credo, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2023

Credo, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Restoration began with the stunning divine declaration to the Prophet Joseph Smith that the Christian sects of his day were “all wrong,” that “all their creeds were an abomination in [God’s] sight.” It’s a powerful condemnation, but what, exactly, does it mean? Later in his life, Joseph reflected that he felt that creeds set limits “and say ‘hitherto shalt thou come & no further’ — which I cannot subscribe to.” Certainly, as I realized during a wonderful musical experience many years ago, there is little if anything in one of the great ecumenical creeds with which a believing Latter-day …

“Signals Of Transcendence”1, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Hints of a different and better world — sometimes dimly remembered, often intuited, and commonly hoped for — and of a glorious, mighty power behind the world in which we currently live, are all around us. They are not so powerful that they cannot be missed or even ignored, but they have been and remain present for those with eyes to see, ears to hear, and hearts to feel. As he always does, God has not left us without witnesses but he does not seek to compel. He loves us, but he also respects our agency

“In This Batter’D Caravanserai”, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2023

“In This Batter’D Caravanserai”, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, based upon verses composed by an eleventh-century Persian mathematician and astronomer, the English Victorian poet Edward FitzGerald eloquently portrays human life in an indifferent, deterministic universe that lacks any evident purpose and is bereft of divine Providence. The poem’s suggested response to such a universe is an unambitious life of hedonism, distraction, and gentle despair. It is curiously modern, and those considering the adoption of anything like its worldview might want to read it, and to think about its implications, very carefully.
