Cataloguing And Classification In Library School In Nigeria: A Reviewer Perspective, Peter Olubunmi Olubiyo
Cataloguing And Classification In Library School In Nigeria: A Reviewer Perspective, Peter Olubunmi Olubiyo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Cataloguing and Classification is being taught both at the undergraduate and postgraduate (Master’s) level in the university system in Nigeria and other part of the world. The course is called Organisation of Knowledge in some library schools. It is a three-unit course at the undergraduate level. However, it is not being taken seriously by majority of the students because of the fact that they do not want to be become librarian later in the future or after graduation. This has always lead them to low grade in academic achievement or grade (score), failure in examination and poor job performances if …

Javanese Islam is incredibly unique in its style and practice. Despite boasting a Muslim population larger than the entire Middle East, Indonesia and its Islamic cultural practices are largely unknown in academic circles. This has made an introduction to Islam in the archipelago even more difficult for the rare interested Western reader. Frustratingly, what is lost on the rest of the world is basically second nature to 155 million Javanese Muslims, who learn from their families, schools, and pilgrimages about the Wali Songo, a group of nine semi-mythical figures credited with spreading Islam to Java. When we stop casting …

Content Analysis Of Activities Of The Emirati Science Textbooks For The Fifth Grade In Light Of Science Process Skills, Teba Abdulazeez Al-Faiadh
Theses
Similar to several other countries, the United Arab Emirates places a high value on the use of science textbooks in the process of teaching and learning science. Therefore, the content of science textbooks must always be evaluated and analyzed in light of scientific knowledge and skills. Providing science process skills in the activities of science textbooks is essential and has a significant role in pushing students toward balanced scientific knowledge because attention to skills is a tool that enables the student to succeed in understanding the nature of science. However, based on the literature, there is a scarcity of scientific …

“Dancing With [Philly’S] Ghosts”: Recycled Materials And Meanings At An Artists’ Residency, Gabriel D. Straus , '23
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
What’s at stake in people’s relationships with objects? I examine this question based on two months of in-depth participant observation and twelve semi-structured interviews with artists from RAIR, an artist residency at a Philadelphia dump, where artists make work out of the discarded material fabric of a gentrifying, deindustrializing city (read: demolished buildings/dead peoples’ stuff). Building on the work of Karen Barad, a physicist-turned-philosopher who outlines an “onto epistemology” based on quantum mechanics, I explore how objects and people “intra-act” at RAIR to refigure time, reshape the city, and redefine the human. I demonstrate how a Baradian agential realist reading …

This collection examines the Robert X House at 18827 Keystone Street in Detroit, Michigan, a significant site in the history of the Nation of Islam and the broader narrative of Black empowerment and civil rights in mid-20th century America. Originally built in 1951 as a modest Federal Housing Administration (FHA) minimum ranch-style home, the property was purchased by Robert Davenport (later known as Robert X), an influential leader in the Nation of Islam. The house became a hub for religious instruction, community-building, and activism.
Robert X, a former boxer and musician, became a prominent figure in Detroit’s Nation of Islam …
“Knowledge Belongs To All, But You Don’T Understand That Because You’Re Nothing But A White”: The Mystical Philosophy Of Embrace Of The Serpent, Rebecca Makas
Journal of Religion & Film
This article explores the implicit theory of mysticism in Ciro Guerra’s 2015 film Embrace of the Serpent (Sp. El abrazo de la serpiente). While many theories of mysticism argue that true mystical experience is unmediated and, therefore, universal, Guerra makes a more provocative statement in the film. He depicts two Westerners’ attempts to have an entheogenic mystical experience in journeys on the Amazon, guided by an indigenous shaman named Karamakate. While the first experience is unsuccessful, the second produces an astonishing mystical vision. The film’s apex transcends culture and suggests the power of the mystical to heal the trauma …

Farms Through The Years, Part 3: A Conversation With Daniel Peterson And Daniel Oswald
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
When did you first become involved with FARMS? Peterson: In the late 1970s and early 80s, Stephen Ricks and I and, a little bit later, Bill Hamblin and I began to talk about the need for an organization like FARMS. We didn't realize that Jack Welch was already launching the Foundation. My actual involvement with FARMS began on a very low level while I was a doctoral student in California, and then accelerated rapidly when I became a member of the BYU faculty in the fall of 1985.

Displacement Of The Rohingyas Of Myanmar, Land Grabbing, And Extractive Capital, Afroza Anwary
The Journal of Social Encounters
Research on the displacement of the Rohingya from their property has paid little attention to how the government’s land policies encourage various actors to seize that land and extract resources. This research is based on interviews with Rohingya refugees, reports from the United Nations and humanitarian agencies, and published academic work. Economic, social, and political factors are responsible for the displacement of Rohingyas. To argue that a single factor is responsible for their displacement would be incorrect, as research reveals a more complicated interaction of social forces. However, this paper considers the unique dynamics of land grabbing, land laws, ethnic …

Economic Evaluation Of Islamic Banking In Pakistan, Salman Ahmed Shaikh
Economic Evaluation Of Islamic Banking In Pakistan, Salman Ahmed Shaikh
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics
The term Islamic in Islamic banking naturally raises the question of what this word adds to the concept and practice of banking? The early literature on Islamic economics raised the bar of expectations and envisioned Islamic banking as distinct from conventional banking by avoiding interest in letters and spirit. Interest-based banking was thought to suffer from exclusion, inequality, injustice, misallocation of capital resources and concentration of capital. It was thought that Islamic banking, while avoiding interest, would be more inclusive, equitable, and fair and would result in a broad allocation of resources without the exclusionary criterion of a fixed cost …
Malaysian Tākāful Agents' Ethical Professional Behavior: A Systematic Literature Review, Nor Arini Abdullah, Shahir Akram Hassan
Malaysian Tākāful Agents' Ethical Professional Behavior: A Systematic Literature Review, Nor Arini Abdullah, Shahir Akram Hassan
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics
This paper examines the ethical behaviour of Malaysian tākāful agents through extensive exploration of several studies on ethical practices in the tākāful industry. The ethical behaviour of the tākāful agent contributes to inevitable consequences in the agent's efforts to attract participants to join tākāful schemes. These positive or negative consequences affect both participants and tākāful businesses. Despite the abundance of research on tākāful agents, research that applies the systematic literature review (SLR) method on the ethical behaviour of the tākāfultākāful agent is rarely available; therefore, this gap needs to be filled. The purpose of this study is to examine the …
