Efficacy Of Ferula L. Species Extracts From Tajikistan Against Influenza Viruses, Saidbeg Satorov, Sulhiy Mavlonazarova, Ahdrey P. Bogoyavlenskiy, Salomuddin D. Yusufi, Vyacheslav Dushenkov

Publications and Research

Efficacy of Ferula L. Species Extracts from Tajikistan Against Influenza Viruses One of the challenges facing both the domestic and international pharmaceutical industries is the limited selection and suboptimal efficacy of available antiviral drugs. The high mutational variability of influenza viruses contributes to rapid acquisition of drug resistance, which diminishes or nullifies the effectiveness of existing therapies, thereby necessitating the exploration for novel therapeutics. This study aimed to assess the antiviral activities of three species of the genus Ferula— indigenous to the Republic of Tajikistan—against influenza strains A/Vladivostok/2/09 (H1N1) and A/Almaty/8/98 (H3N2). The investigation revealed that phytochemical constituents—specifically, root …

Podiatrists' Experiences With Telemedicine During Covid-19, Jeavon Inniss

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Telemedicine was one of the most beneficial technologies to improve patient access to care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Telemedicine has been well-researched in the hospital and primary care setting. There is a paucity of research that has focused on the experiences of specialty providers such as podiatrists. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand podiatrists’ perspectives on the value of telemedicine as a method of delivering care. The unified theory of acceptance and use of technology was used as a theoretical framework to aid in identifying which factors are necessary for acceptance and continued use of telemedicine in …

Covid-19 Tort Reform, Clayton J. Masterman May 2024

Covid-19 Tort Reform, Clayton J. Masterman

Journal Articles

In 2020 and 2021, 44 states and Washington, D.C. passed laws that limited tort liability related to COVID-19. The most common reforms immunized health care providers from malpractice or similar liability. A second category is limited liability to individuals or businesses for exposing others to the novel coronavirus. And a third category protected manufacturers of supplies used to detect and prevent COVID- 19 from products liability suits. The goals of these reforms included protecting health care providers from uncertainty in providing care for a novel disease, limiting the macroeconomic consequences of the pandemic, and encouraging the distribution of critical supplies …

The Stratified Leadership Model Of The First-Century Christian Church, Barton Schuyler Garratt Edsall Iv May 2024

The Stratified Leadership Model Of The First-Century Christian Church, Barton Schuyler Garratt Edsall Iv

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

As Christianity enters its third millennium, it faces the sharpest decline in the number of people attending church congregations compared to the total population. In Romans 1:13, the Apostle Paul states that God’s people should not be ignorant that the purpose for leaders within the collective church body, beginning with himself as the example, is so the people’s lives would be fruitful–spiritually enriched and productive. Logic dictates that if the lives of those who attended Christian churches in the twenty-first century experienced and displayed such spiritual quality, attendance would not be declining but contrarily on the rise. Regarding church clergy …

Changing The Narrative: Developing Evidence-Based, Communication Strategies To Address Health Disparities Of Black Women In The United States, Emmerline Francesca Nelson-Rogers May 2024

Changing The Narrative: Developing Evidence-Based, Communication Strategies To Address Health Disparities Of Black Women In The United States, Emmerline Francesca Nelson-Rogers

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Black women experience health issues at disparate rates when compared to their racial counterparts. Although these health disparities can be linked to health behaviors, they are deeply rooted in historic, racial systems that govern our lives today. More often than not, changes in health behaviors are at the forefront of addressing these health disparities rather than historical health trends of Black women in the U.S. This study aims to discuss why the change needed is a change in the narrative for why these health disparities exist and persist as well as a change in narrative about the role Black women …

A Fur Family Protein Bosr Is A Novel Rna-Binding Protein That Controls Rpos Rna Stability In The Lyme Disease Pathogen, Sajith Raghunandanan, Raj Priya, Fuad Alanazi, Meghan C. Lybecker, Paula Schlax, X. Frank Yang

All Faculty Scholarship

The σ54-σS sigma factor cascade plays a central role in regulating differential gene expression during the enzootic cycle of Borreliella burgdorferi, the Lyme disease pathogen. In this pathway, the primary transcription of rpoS (which encodes σS) is under the control of σ54 which is activated by a bacterial enhancer-binding protein (EBP), Rrp2. The σ54-dependent activation in B. burgdorferi has long been thought to be unique, requiring an additional factor, BosR, a homologue of classical Fur/PerR repressor/activator. However, how BosR is involved in this σ54-dependent activation remains unclear and perplexing. In this study, we demonstrate that BosR does not function as …

Twist1 Drives Cytotoxic Cd8+ T-Cell Exhaustion Through Transcriptional Activation Of Cd274 (Pd-L1) Expression In Breast Cancer Cells, Xiaobin Yu, Jianming Xu

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

In breast cancer, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is positively associated with programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and immune escape, and TWIST1 silences ERα expression and induces EMT and cancer metastasis. However, how TWIST1 regulates PD-L1 and immune evasion is unknown. This study analyzed TWIST1 and PD-L1 expression in breast cancers, investigated the mechanism for TWIST1 to regulate PD-L1 transcription, and assessed the effects of TWIST1 and PD-L1 in cancer cells on cytotoxic CD8+ T cells. Interestingly, TWIST1 expression is correlated with high-level PD-L1 expression in ERα-negative breast cancer cells. The overexpression and knockdown of TWIST1 robustly upregulate and downregulate PD-L1 …
