The Immunizing Value Of Commercial Hemorrhagic Septicemia Aggressins, L. Van Es, J. F. Olney Nov 1936

The Immunizing Value Of Commercial Hemorrhagic Septicemia Aggressins, L. Van Es, J. F. Olney

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

In 1924, Gochenour published the results of certain experiments which tended to show that what he regarded as a specific aggressin possessed an immunizing value against hemorrhagic septicemia. The aggressin he prepared, by the use of a highly virulent strain of Bacillus bipolaris, was described as having adequately protected seven bovine yearlings against inoculations with the same organism which, when injected into four yearlings, used as virus controls, proved fatal to them. Soon after, if not simultaneously with, the publication of the Gochenour articles, hemorrhagic septicemia aggressin was placed on the market and apparently has since then been sold …

Swine Erysipelas, L. Van Es, C. B. Mcgrath Aug 1936

Swine Erysipelas, L. Van Es, C. B. Mcgrath

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Because of the more or less frequent occurrence of swine erysipelas on Nebraska farms it seemed proper that information on this subject be made available in the form of a Station publication, especially written to serve as a reference for veterinarians, who naturally are first appealed to when an as yet relatively strange disease appears among a herd of swine. Hence the text is written in a technical form for the sake of precision. In the preparation of the text the literature of countries in which for many years the disease has constituted a permanent problem has been freely consulted. …

An Investigation In The Nutrition Of Negro Infants In Tallahasee, Florida, Lola L. Cunningham Jan 1936

An Investigation In The Nutrition Of Negro Infants In Tallahasee, Florida, Lola L. Cunningham

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

A review of related literature gave no evidence of investigations of feeding practices among Negro infants. The writer thought it would be interesting to study this group to determine when and what additions were made to breast feedings and to determine the adequacy of the diet as judged by standards of nutrition and by the reaction of the children. Thirty-six infants between the ages of six and eighteen months were studied in Tallahassee, Florida. It was found that the time of beginning additions to the breast feedings varied from the fifth month of age through the ninth month. Additions consisted …

Health Education In The Rural Elementary Schools For Negroes In Brazos County, Irene E. Randle Aug 1935

Health Education In The Rural Elementary Schools For Negroes In Brazos County, Irene E. Randle

All Theses

Health Education is receiving more attention today than many other subjects. Unless an individual is at a high standard of physical and mental efficiency, he cannot approach his work with a maximum of enthusiasm, skill, and energy. The acquisition of knowledge depends on a healthy mind and body.

In the matter of health, surveys have revealed the fact that country children may suffer. Fresh air and space are not enough. To insure healthful growth, knowledge of hygiene nutrition and disease prevention and protection are just as necessary in the county as in the city. Without a realization of the needs …

Suggested Program For Teaching Health In The First Grade At Orange, Texas, Bessie M. Bradley Aug 1935

Suggested Program For Teaching Health In The First Grade At Orange, Texas, Bessie M. Bradley

All Theses

Health is primarily a matter of education and essentially a function of school education. The progress of the child in school depends directly upon his physical condition. The child who is undernourished, or who does not observe the practices of exercise, sleep, rest, cleanliness, and other personal habits essential to physical vigor lags in his mental progress and repeats his grades. Not only does he suffer individually, but he becomes an increased economic burden to the community School administrators, then, even if they were interested to the intellectual progress of their pupils, would be deeply concerned with pupils' physical health …

Some Monogenetic Trematodes From The Galapagos Islands And The Neighboring Pacific, Frank Grose Meserve Aug 1935

Some Monogenetic Trematodes From The Galapagos Islands And The Neighboring Pacific, Frank Grose Meserve

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Introduction

Trematodes are parasitic, unsegmented, flattened (rarely cylindrical) worms. They have ventral, anterior, posterior or median attachment organs. The sense organs are poorly developed. The mouth is terminal or ventral and subterminal. The intestine is usually forked with or without lateral branches. The animals, with few exceptions, are hermaphroditic. The ovary is usually single. They have one, two, or more testes. The development is direct with only one host in the ectoparasitic Monogenea and indirect in the Digenea which have two or more hosts. The digenetic trematodes usually parasitize vertebrates which serve as their primary hosts and invertebrates (Mollusca) which …
