Suggestions For The Handling Of Certain Mammals, Robert L. Rausch Apr 1947

Suggestions For The Handling Of Certain Mammals, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

For experimental work, it is often desirable to handle the smaller wild mammals more freely than usual methods allow. Howell (Journal of Mammalogy (1937) 18(4): 513) suggests the feeding of pentobarbital sodium in milk or other food. While this may be satisfactory for animals accustomed to captivity, it can hardly be used for those newly captured.

Pullorum Disease In The Coot, Robert L. Rausch Apr 1947

Pullorum Disease In The Coot, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Among specimens collected on March 8, 1945, at Buckeye Lake, Ohio, were a number of coots (Fulica americana). When the latter were examined for parasitic infection, it was noticed that the ovary of one specimen was deformed, and much enlarged when compared with those of other birds of this species collected on the same day. No other lesions were detected macroscopically, and the bird appeared to be in normal physical condition. The ovaries resembled those found in chickens affected with pullorum disease, and a pure culture of Salmonella pullorum was recovered.

The Springs Bulletin - January 22, 1947, Springs Cotton Mills

The Springs Bulletin 1943-1949

The Springs Cotton Mill traces it's beginning to the organization of the Fort Mill Manufacturing Co. which opened a plant in Fort Mill, SC in 1888. The company went on to open plants in Lancaster, SC, Chester, SC, and Kershaw, SC. At one time Springs was the largest industrial employer in South Carolina. Springs began an association with a Brazil based company (Coteminas) in 2001 and merged with Coteminas in 2005 forming Springs Global. By 2007, Springs had ended all manufacturing in South Carolina. The Springs Bulletin was a newspaper generally published bimonthly for Springs employees. The Bulletin offered news …

Andrya Sciuri N. Sp., A Cestode From The Northern Flying Squirrel, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Among helminths taken from four northern flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus macrotis Mearns) were two cestodes belonging to the genus Andrya. These represent an undescribed species. The infected flying squirrels were collected in or near tamarack bogs during February, 1947, near Millston, Jackson County, Wisconsin.

A Redescription Of Taenia Taxidiensis Skinker, 1935, Robert Rausch Jan 1947

A Redescription Of Taenia Taxidiensis Skinker, 1935, Robert Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Since the original description of Taenia taxidiensis Skinker, 1935,2 was based on an incomplete and apparently immature cestode, a redescription seems desirable.

The following description is based on 28 cestodes, taken from three infected badgers, Taxidea taxus (Schreber), all collected in southern Wisconsin. Of these, only one strobila had gravid segments, the others being immature. Most of the data given below are based on the single mature specimen, with additional measurements, where Possible, from the immature worms. No sections were made of these specimens, and the measurements given were taken fl·om stained wholemounts.

Salmonellosis suis or pig typhus, also designated as pig typhoid, infectious necrotic enteritis, or "necro," is an infectious disease among young pigs. Range Shelters, Feeders, Waterers For Poultry, J. Ervin Boyd, Merle Esmay Jun 1946

Range Shelters, Feeders, Waterers For Poultry, J. Ervin Boyd, Merle Esmay

SDSU Extension Circulars

No Substitute for Sunshine and Plenty of Green Fern There are probably no adequate substitutes for sunshine and succulent green feed for reducing the costs of feeding, keeping poultry in good health, promoting proper growth of bone and feather and developing good pullets for laying. Grasses and legumes in the early stages of growth contain relatively much more protein than in the later stages of growth. They are also rich in vitamins and will tend to balance and correct the deficiencies of proteins in the cereal grains fed to poultry. (See more in text.)

Studies On The Validity Of Swine Erysipelas Culture-Vaccines, L. Van Es, J. F. Olney, I. C. Blore Jun 1946

Studies On The Validity Of Swine Erysipelas Culture-Vaccines, L. Van Es, J. F. Olney, I. C. Blore

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

In countries where vaccination against swine erysipelas has been practiced during the last half century, there is a consensus among veterinarians that the best results are obtained when the live culture-vaccine is not only fresh and highly virulent but is endowed also with a good capacity for growth on artificial culture media. Apparently avirulent culture-vaccines are apt to engender only a transitory immunity or fail altogether. The problem presented by undesirable culture-vaccines was deemed to be of such importance to the swine industry that this Station undertook a series of experiments, to determine what influences might be accountable for the …
