IMPORTANCE: To inform the design and implementation of targeted interventions to reduce the future burden of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers in Texas, it is necessary to examine the county and health service region (HSR) levels of (1) the proportion of children and teenagers aged 9 to 17 years who initiated and were up to date for HPV vaccination series and (2) HPV-related cancer incidence rates (IRs).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate temporal trends and geospatial patterns of HPV vaccination initiation and up-to-date status as well as HPV-related cancer rates at county and HSR levels in Texas.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based …

Diurnal Rhythms In Varicella Vaccine Effectiveness, Dana Danino, Yoav Kalron, Jeffrey A. Haspel, Guy Hazan
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUNDImmune processes are influenced by circadian rhythms. We evaluate the association between varicella vaccine administration time of day and vaccine effectiveness.METHODSA national cohort, children younger than 6 years, were enrolled between January 2002 and December 2023. We compared children vaccinated during morning (7:00-10:59), late morning to afternoon (11:00-15:59), or evening hours (16:00-19:59). A Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to adjust for ethnicity, sex, and comorbidities. The first varicella infection occurring at least 14 days after vaccination and a second dose administration were treated as terminal events.RESULTSOf 251,141 vaccinated children, 4,501 (1.8%) experienced breakthrough infections. Infection rates differed based …

Journal of Health Research
Background: One primary objective of a tuberculosis (TB) eradication program is the recovery of patients. Consistent medication intake is vital for TB sufferers to achieve recovery, as discontinuation or dropout can impede progress. Gender bias stemming from differences in social roles between men and women may influence the utilization of TB treatment programs. This study seeks to provide an overview of gender bias in the utilization of TB treatment programs.
Methods: This qualitative research study employed an exploratory descriptive approach to examine the experiences of gender bias among six women who withdrew from TB treatment in Batanghari regency, Jambi Province, …

HPV, or Human Papilloma Virus, is the most common Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). It is the number one STI in men and women. There are over 460 subtypes; a majority of the subtypes are able to be cleared by the human immune system within 3 years after initial infection. However fifteen of these subtypes have been classified as ‘high-risk’ for carcinoma development, accounting for almost 100% of cervical cancers. This STI has an age prevalence starting at 19 for oral and genital infections. The overall goal of this research is to provide students with an equally represented and unbiased database …

Background: Upregulation of IL-6 has been associated with worse prognosis in COVID-19 patients. Impact on IL-6 signalling has mostly been limited to clinical outcomes in IL-6 receptor antagonist trials. Methods: We performed a phase 2, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (NCT04380961) of US-based hospitalised adults (< 85 years) with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe (low levels of supplemental oxygen) or critical disease (high levels of oxygen supplementation). Patients received sirukumab 5 mg/kg or placebo single dose IV on Day 1 plus standard of care. The primary endpoint was time to sustained clinical improvement up to Day 28 based on an ordinal scale. Secondary endpoints included clinical improvement, all-cause mortality, and safety. Following an interim analysis, the protocol was amended to only recruit patients with critical COVID-19. Findings: From May 2020 to March 2021, 209 patients were randomised; 112 had critical disease (72 sirukumab, 40 placebo) at baseline. Median time to sustained clinical improvement in critical patients was 17 and 23 days in the sirukumab and placebo groups (HR, 1∙1; 95% CI, 0∙66–1∙88; p > 0∙05). At Day 28, 59∙4% versus 55∙0% of patients achieved clinical improvement with sirukumab versus placebo and rates of all-cause mortality were 24∙6% versus 30∙0%, respectively. Rates of grade ≥ 3 adverse events were comparable between the sirukumab and placebo groups (25∙9% vs 32∙9%; all patients). Interpretation: In critical COVID-19 patients who received sirukumab, there …

Root Lesion And Burrowing Nematodes And Their Management, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Grains and other field crops factsheets
Nematodes are common soil pests that feed on the roots of a wide range of crops in all agricultural areas of Western Australia, resulting in significant crop yield loss. Root lesion nematode can be managed but not eradicated.
This factsheet summarises the biology of the root lesion nematode (RLN, Pratylenchus spp.) and burrowing nematode (Radopholus spp.) species that damage Western Australian (WA) crops, and their diagnosis and management.

Armyworms And Their Management In Cereal Crops, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Armyworms And Their Management In Cereal Crops, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Grains and other field crops factsheets
Armyworms are pests of cereals crops. They are frequently found along the south coast of Western Australia and occasionally in other grainbelt locations.
When barley crops are maturing in spring, large armyworm caterpillars climb plants and can chew through the stems, causing the heads to fall to the ground. Damage to wheat and oat crops occurs less frequently and is usually minor compared to damage in barley. Armyworms are seldom a serious problem in pastures.

Pathology, East Africa
Importance: The emergence of acute neurological symptoms in children necessitates immediate intervention. Although low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bear the highest burden of neurological diseases, there is a scarcity of diagnostic and therapeutic resources. Therefore, current understanding of the etiology of neurological emergencies in LMICs relies mainly on clinical diagnoses and verbal autopsies.
Objective: To characterize the association of premortem neurological symptoms and their management with postmortem-confirmed cause of death among children aged younger than 5 years in LMICs and to identify current gaps and improve strategies to enhance child survival.
Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional …
