General Submissions: Clinical Settings Materials
In October of 2014 Indianapolis found itself, like many communities, preparing for the unknown realities of providing care to a Patient under Investigation (PUI) for Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). A group of clinical experts from local facilities gathered to discuss clinical management, guidelines, challenges, and opportunities. Trainings and exercises with local EMS agencies had already begun within the community. But more in depth hospital exercises had not yet been conducted. The clinicians recommended developing an exercise specific to patient care areas where a PUI would be taken care of.
Japan's Response To The Trade Conflict Between The United States And China, Rikako Watai
Japan's Response To The Trade Conflict Between The United States And China, Rikako Watai
Washington International Law Journal
Abstract: Decoupling refers to the strategy of separating and disconnecting economies and markets between different nations. However, in the contest of the ongoing trade conflict between the United States and China, decoupling primarily refers to determining economic dependence on a specific nation as a national security risk, thereby reinforcing vulnerabilities in one’s supply chain. Japan views the United States as its primary partner in national security policy and China as a significant market because of its geographic proximity. As a result, ensuring economic security became a pressing concern for Japan.
Japan refers to the United States’ idea of economic …

Specialized Contact Sites Regulate The Fusion Of Chlamydial Inclusion Membranes, Christine Linton, Jordan Wesolowski, Anna Lobley, Toshiyuki Yamaji, Kentaro Hanada, Fabienne Paumet
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
The intracellular bacterial pathogen Chlamydia trachomatis replicates within a membrane-bound compartment called the inclusion. Upon infection with several chlamydiae, each bacterium creates its own inclusion, resulting in multiple inclusions within each host cell. Ultimately, these inclusions fuse together in a process that requires the chlamydial protein IncA. Here, we show that inclusions form unique contact sites (inclusion contact sites, ICSs) prior to fusion, that serve as fusogenic platforms in which specific lipids and chlamydial proteins concentrate. Fusion depends on IncA clustering within ICSs and is regulated by PI(3,4)P2 and sphingolipids. As IncA concentrates within ICSs, its C-terminus likely interacts …

Ticks are vectors of public health concern because the pathogens they transmit can cause detrimental diseases in humans. Lyme disease, tick-borne relapsing fever, human granulocytic anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tick-borne encephalitis, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, and babesiosis are some of the most common diseases caused by the pathogens transmitted by ticks. The overlap between human activities and tick habitats is growing, contributing to an increase in tick-borne disease cases. Unfortunately, pregnancy as a risk factor for tick-borne diseases is largely ignored. In this narrative review we use case reports, epidemiological studies, and animal studies to evaluate the maternal, pregnancy, and …

Background: Neoadjuvant immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have improved survival outcomes compared with chemotherapy in resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the impact of actionable genomic alterations (AGAs) on the efficacy of neoadjuvant ICIs remains unclear. We report the influence of AGAs on treatment failure (TF) in patients with resectable NSCLC treated with neoadjuvant ICIs.
Methods: Tumor molecular profiles were obtained from patients with stage I-IIIA resectable NSCLC (American Joint Committee on Cancer seventh edition) treated with either neoadjuvant nivolumab (N, n=23) or nivolumab+ipilimumab (NI, n=21) followed by surgery in a previously reported phase-2 randomized study (NCT03158129). Theses and Dissertations
Envenomation resulting from snakebites is widely recognized as an alarming health risk in tropical and sub-tropical areas. The big four snakes including Naja naja, Bungarus caeruleus, Daboia russelli, Echis carinatus are responsible for most of the envenomation in India. The current therapy for snake envenomation is immunoglobulins, produced from serum or plasma of horses or sheep. To overcome the drawbacks of current antivenom, chicken egg yolk (IgY) antibodies have recently emerged as one of the most promising research avenues.
In this study, the efficacy of chicken egg yolk sourced antisnake venom (ASV) IgY against the big four venoms was evaluated …

The aggressive work involved in proposing new distance measures between two neutrosophic sets has been obvious for the past ten years. These continuous efforts are commonly motivated by the need to provide a variety of alternatives in the study of decision-making. This study starts by providing complete proof of the satisfaction of single-valued neutrosophic set properties for a new distance measure. The novel distance measure averages out two different distance measures to reduce the possibility of information loss. Secondary data gathered from a questionnaire survey on the medical emergency knowledge of twenty dental students is used here to become the …

Introduction: Delays (10-22 months) in availability of official state and county-level mortality data could have significant public health consequences. The COVID-19 pandemic illuminated the need for health officials to access timely death data to identify unexpected increases in mortality in their communities.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine if funeral home listings and/or newspaper obituaries could help identify excess mortality on the local level, prior to the availability of official death records.
Methods: To calculate excess mortality, four years (2017–2020) of data were collected from three sources: the state health department, online funeral home listings, and newspaper …

BACKGROUND: Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a major medical condition for travellers worldwide, particularly travellers to low- and middle-income countries. Norovirus (NoV) is the most common cause of viral AGE in older children and adults, but data on prevalence and impact amongst travellers is limited.
METHODS: Prospective, multi-site, observational cohort study conducted 2015-2017, amongst adult international travellers from the US and Europe to areas of moderate to high risk of travel-acquired AGE. Participants provided self-collected pre-travel stool samples and self-reported AGE symptoms whilst travelling. Post-travel stool samples were requested from symptomatic subjects and a sample of asymptomatic travellers within 14 days …

This article argues that the changing global security environment requires the United States to treat the military health system and the broader national health systems enterprise as strategic national capabilities rather than primarily as peacetime healthcare services. Drawing on lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and growing risks of large-scale conflict, the authors contend that future crises could produce military and civilian casualty levels that exceed the capacity of existing military medical systems. They emphasize the need for military health services to operate as part of an integrated civil-military health system capable of supporting deployed forces, receiving …

International Journal of Playwork Practice
Play is recognised for its essential role in children’s development and, as such, the right to play has been internationally ratified through the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, people’s day-to-day lives were universally disrupted by restrictions and children’s ability to play as usual was impacted. The aim of this review was to examine the ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic affected children’s play around the world, and whether this differed as a function of their national context. Database searches were conducted between August 2022 and February 2023, whereby a total of …

Background: In implantology, piezosurgery is a novel and cutting-edge method of bone surgery. Various ultrasonic frequencies can be used for selective cutting, which preserves essential anatomical structures by only operating on solidified hard tissues. Piezoelectric osteotomy is a technique that can be used to precisely and safely prepare receptor sites for procedure implants, acquire bone grafts classified as autogenous (blocks and particles), perform osteotomies used for alveolar crest bone expansion, lift the maxillary sinus, and remove dental implants. Clinically and physiologically, the outcomes are outstanding, especially regarding osteocyte vitality.
Objectives: This review aims to highlight the advantages and …
