The spread of new coronavirus (SARS-Cov-2) follows a different pattern than previous respiratory viruses, posing a serious public health risk worldwide. World Health Organization (WHO) named the disease as COVID-19 and declared it a pandemic. COVID-19 is characterized by highly contagious nature, rapid transmission, swift clinical course, profound worldwide impact, and high mortality among critically ill patients. Chest X-ray, computerized tomography (CT), and ultrasound are commonly used imaging modalities. Among them, ultrasound, due to its portability and non-invasiveness, can be easily moved to the bedside for examination at any time. In addition, with use of 4G or 5G networks, remote …
The Growing Threat Of Agroterrorism And Strategies For Agricultural Defense, Alyssa Forrest
The Growing Threat Of Agroterrorism And Strategies For Agricultural Defense, Alyssa Forrest
Senior Honors Theses
Due to the dynamic nature of human conflict, non-traditional terror tactics have evolved to undermine the socioeconomic stability of targeted societies. Considering the landscape in which terrorists operate, emphasis on more subversive methods of biological terror have become prominent in recent decades. Agroterrorism, or the use of plant pathogens to infect a nation’s cultivated crops, is an emerging topic due to its threat to global food security and economic stability. Although emergency preparedness objectives have been enacted at national, state, and even local levels, preemptive measures can no longer remain the sole responsibility of intelligence and law enforcement agencies. The …

The Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute lowered the fluoroquinolone minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) susceptibility breakpoints for and glucose non-fermenting Gram-negative bacilli in January 2019. This retrospective cohort study describes the impact of this reappraisal on ciprofloxacin susceptibility overall and in patients with risk factors for antimicrobial resistance. Gram-negative bloodstream isolates collected from hospitalized adults at Prisma Health-Midlands hospitals in South Carolina, USA, from January 2010 to December 2014 were included. Matched pairs mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated to examine the change in ciprofloxacin susceptibility after MIC breakpoint reappraisal. Susceptibility of to ciprofloxacin declined by 5.2% (95% …

Ultrasound has developed as an invaluable tool in diagnosis and proper management in the intensive care unit (ICU). Application of critical care ultrasonography is quite distinct from the routine comprehensive diagnostic ultrasound exam, because the urgent setting mandates a goal-directed approach. Performing accurate and efficient critical care ultrasound requires ultrasound providers to first understand the pathophysiology of the disease and related imaging findings, and then follow the protocols to perform a focused ultrasound exam. In the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, ultrasound plays an essential role in diagnosing and monitoring critically ill COVID-19 patients in the ICU. Our review …
Spectrophotometric Assay For Dape-Encoded N-Succinyl-L,L-Di Aminopimelic Acid Desuccinylase, A Potential Antibiotic Target, Elliot Gild
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
The previously most widely used DapE assay monitors amide bond cleavage of the L,L-SDAP substrate spectrophotometrically at 225 nm.1 This assay is straightforward and reliable for structurally simple inhibitors, but it cannot be used to test potential inhibitors that absorb strongly in the UV region, precluding its use in testing many preferred medicinal chemistry leads and analogs. Ninhydrin-based assays provide ease of application and reliability to detect primary amino groups such as that formed upon the hydrolysis of L,L-SDAP. We synthesized N6-methylated and N6-acetylated L,L-SDAP derivatives to prevent ninhydrin side reactions in the assay and also tested them as viable …

Letter To Chairman Mcgovern On Remote Voting, Deborah Pearlstein
Testimony
Letter written to Congressman Jim McGovern, Chair of the House Rules Committee. This letter has been entered into the Congressional Record.
As a professor of constitutional law, and a scholar who has written extensively on separation of powers issues in U.S. Government, I believe adopting procedures to allow for remote voting under these extraordinary circumstances is not only lawful, but essential to the maintenance of our constitutional democracy. Recognizing that specific procedures for remote voting may still be in development, the analysis offered here focuses foremost on the broad scope of Congress’ constitutional authority to regulate its voting procedures.

In early March, Seattle, WA, was the epicenter of the US COVID-19 pandemic. Providence St. Joseph Health had seen the first reported US case of COVID-19 on January 20 [1] and quickly found itself responding to a growing crisis, with little information about how best to care for patients while protecting frontline staff.
On March 16, 2020, Providence System Library Services received an email from senior leadership with the subject line: “Urgent – An Unconventional Request.” We were asked to pause all other work to search for viable mask patterns that could be easily and quickly made at home by …

The Impact Of Vaccine Coverage And Exemptions On The Resurgence Of Vaccine Preventable Disease: A Review Of The Literature, Kara Costantino
Honors Theses
Vaccinations are a safe and effective way to prevent the spread of disease. In recent years, vaccine coverage rates have declined while nonmedical exemption rates have increased. These changes have contributed to increased prevalence of vaccine preventable diseases. Declining vaccine coverage and increasing nonmedical exemptions are a threat to public health and the relationship between these factors needs to be understood. Clusters and outbreaks of vaccine preventable diseases have occurred as a result of more people declining vaccination. Factors that may incline someone to refuse vaccination include safety concerns, lack of trust, freedom of choice, decreased understanding for the need, …
Antibiotic Resistance In Escherichia Coli In The Female Microbiota. Phylogenetic Differences Within The Escherichia Coli., Adriana Ene
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common infection in women. While UTIs are most frequently caused by E. coli, it can also reside within the urinary tract as a commensal member of the urinary microbiota. Prior genomic analysis of E. coli strains associated with UTIs and commensal strains have been conducted, looking at virulence factors and antibiotic resistance distinguishing the two. UTIs are commonly treated with an antibiotic. While E. coli strains can encode for antibiotic-resistance genes naturally, they can also acquire resistance because of prior antibiotic treatment. Dueto the community-acquired antibiotic resistance, there are less and less treatment …
Synthesizing Dape Inhibitors Through Molecular Dynamic Simulations, Kristeen Bebla
Synthesizing Dape Inhibitors Through Molecular Dynamic Simulations, Kristeen Bebla
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
The development of new classifications of inhibitors is essential in order to control infectious diseases. Currently the only antibiotics available follow two approaches: inhibition of cell wall remodeling and protein synthesis. DapE is part of the succinylase biosynthetic pathway and is important to the production of lysine and mDap both of which synthesize protein and bacterial peptidoglycan cell wall remodeling. There is no evidence of DapE in mammals, therefore, inhibition should be essential in antibiotic development.

Arbitration Of Health And Safety Issues In The Workplace: Employees Who Refuse Work Assignments Because Of Fear Of Aids Contagion, Madelyn C. Squire
Maine Law Review
Horror stories concerning the abuse suffered by the AIDS victim in the workplace are plentiful. There have been numerous reports about employees who have refused to work with or touch the AIDS worker, or use the same bathroom, telephone, water fountain, or pencil. It was reported that one AIDS victim was not even allowed to use his pregnant co-worker's word processor; she claimed she had once seen him sweat on the keyboard. Paul Cronan became painfully aware that his employer of twelve years, the New England Telephone Company, had breached his privacy by divulging in large group meetings of employees …

Wildfire Smoke Worsens Coronavirus Risk, Putting Firefighters In Extra Danger, Luke Montrose
Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
As summer approaches, two forces of nature are on a collision course, and wildland firefighters will be caught in the middle.
New research suggests that the smoke firefighters breathe on the front lines of wildfires is putting them at greater risk from the new coronavirus, with potentially lethal effects.
At the same time, firefighting conditions make precautions such as social distancing and hand-washing difficult, increasing the chance that, once the virus enters a fire camp, it could quickly spread.
As an environmental toxicologist, I have spent the last decade expanding our understanding of how wood smoke exposure impacts human health. …

All over the country, people are making headlines for violating shelter-in-place and stay-at-home orders. Motivations for this behavior are diverse; some fail to recognize the gravity of the situation, some acknowledge that COVID-19 is bad, but doubt that it is a threat to them personally, others, despite a lack of expertise in infectious disease, trust their gut instincts more than they trust the opinions of experts. Some people who defiantly resist orders insist that they are doing so to protect their constitutional rights. People are hosting parties, attending church services, and engaging in life-as-usual activity. Those who have been sheltering …

Diagnosis And Management Of Common Hand Infections., Vivek K. Bilolikar, Daniel A Seigerman, Asif M. Ilyas
Rothman Institute Papers
- While many hand infections are superficial, diligent evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of these infections are central for preventing disability and morbidity.
- Maintaining a wide differential diagnosis is important as some hand infections may mimic others.
- In geographic areas with more than a 10% to 15% prevalence of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) hand infections, empiric antibiotics should adequately cover MRSA.
- Once culture results are available, antibiotic regimens should be narrowed to reduce the development of resistant pathogens.

Establishment Of Laboratory Methods To Assess The Application Of Blood Transfusions In Reptiles, Anke Cordula Stoehr
LSU Master's Theses
A broad knowledge base on veterinary transfusion medicine has been developed in common mammalian species, but little is known in reptiles. The goals of this thesis were to establish laboratory methods to assess the application of blood transfusions in reptiles. Morphological and physiological differences in reptiles, including their erythrocytes, hamper direct adaption of mammalian laboratory methods.
Quantification of percentage hemolysis is a crucial tool for quality assessment of stored red blood cell products. We evaluated measurement of the required analytes for this calculation (supernatant and total hemoglobin) with different methods in blood from American alligators and found that the use …
