Age-Related Effects On Gait Parameters In Healthy Normal Aging Adults, Jamie C. Park
Age-Related Effects On Gait Parameters In Healthy Normal Aging Adults, Jamie C. Park
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The process of aging brings a set of changes that are widespread in nature. Two of the domains in which age-related effects can be prominently seen are cognition and motor/mobility. Until more recently, gait was viewed as more of a simple and automatic motor process, but increasing evidence suggests the involvement of higher cognitive functioning and attention. The association of age-related gait changes and cognitive decline has been reported in numerous studies, and there is much potential value in examining the cognitively normal aging population to facilitate the establishment of the normal parameters in these areas that are anticipated with …

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to predict trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (SXT) resistance in patients with community-onset urinary tract infection (UTI) due to Enterobacteriaceae based on patient-specific risk factors. METHODS: This was a retrospective case-control study in Prisma Health facilities in central South Carolina, USA, including three community hospitals, affiliated emergency departments and ambulatory clinics, including adult patients with community-onset UTI due to Enterobacteriaceae (1 April 2015 to 29 February 2016). Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine risk factors for SXT resistance. RESULTS: Among 351 unique patients with community-onset UTI, 71 (20.2%) had SXT-resistant Enterobacteriaceae urinary isolates. Overall, median age was 64 years …
Chemtrails And Solar Geoengineers: Governing Online Conspiracy Theory Misinformation, Charles R. Corbett
Chemtrails And Solar Geoengineers: Governing Online Conspiracy Theory Misinformation, Charles R. Corbett
Missouri Law Review
This Article assesses legal obstacles to regulating chemtrail misinformation and proposes responses that work within prevailing norms and laws governing online speech. It explains how chemtrail content complicates public deliberation on solar geoengineering and, by extension, hurts the legitimacy of research activities. It also sharpens the general contributions of misinformation scholarship by applying them specifically to chemtrail content. It concludes with recommendations on how to limit chemtrail misinformation’s spread and impact. Reckoning with climate change, geoengineering, and online misinformation is a multigenerational project. Legal and policy analysis must accordingly adopt a long-time horizon when devising regulatory responses.
The Public Health Approach To Human Trafficking Prevention, Jordan Greenbaum Md
The Public Health Approach To Human Trafficking Prevention, Jordan Greenbaum Md
Georgia State University Law Review
Sex and labor trafficking of adults and children are global public health issues that demand a public health approach to eradication. Rigorous scientific research is needed to create an evidence base that drives multi-sector collaborative prevention efforts addressing trafficking at all levels of the socioecological model. Programs need to be evaluated carefully and modified accordingly, then scaled up to disseminate critical information to the large body of people at risk of exploitation. Legal professionals have an important role to play in combatting human trafficking by educating themselves, their colleagues and clients, and the public, as well as advocating for legislative …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Background Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) are increasingly being used as diagnostic tools for soil-transmitted helminths (STHs; Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, Necator ameri-canus, Ancylostoma duodenale and A. ceylanicum), Strongyloides stercoralis and Schisto-soma in human stool. Currently, there is a large diversity of NAATs being applied, but an external quality assessment scheme (EQAS) for these diagnostics is lacking. An EQAS involves a blinded process where test results reported by a laboratory are compared to those reported by reference or expert laboratories, allowing for an objective assessment of the diagnostic performance of a laboratory. In the current study, we piloted an international …

Beat The Heat: Texas’S Need To Reduce Summer Temperatures In Offender Housing, Mary E. Adair
Beat The Heat: Texas’S Need To Reduce Summer Temperatures In Offender Housing, Mary E. Adair
St. Mary's Law Journal
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s lack of air conditioning in offender housing areas is a violation of the Eighth Amendment and deprives offenders of humane living conditions. Unlike most Texans, offenders housed in the TDCJ are unable to adequately protect themselves from the higher, prolonged summer temperatures. Most Texas prisons do not provide air conditioning or other types of cooling systems in offender housing areas, so offenders are at the mercy of the elements with little protection against heat-related illnesses. Several jurisdictions, other than Texas, have recognized extreme temperatures in housing areas can lead to constitutional violations because the …

Dynamical Behavior Of A Malaria Relapse Model With Insecticide Treated Nets (Itns) As Protection Measure, Reuben I. Gweryina, Anande R. Kimbir
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Malaria is a tropical disease which is mainly spread by plasmodium falciparum which has been the principal enemy to the existence of mankind till date. In this paper a version of a malaria model incorporating the use of treated mosquito nets as a disease control strategy is proposed and then transformed into proportions, so as to assess the global impact of ITNs on the prevalence of malaria. Constructing a Lyapunov function using matrix-theoretic approach, a malaria-free equilibrium state is obtained, which is globally asymptotically stable if the control reproduction number, 𝑅𝑚<1. This means that malaria can be controlled or eradicated under such a threshold quantity, 𝑅𝑚. On the other hand, a malaria-persistence equilibrium state exists which is globally stable when 𝑅𝑚>1, using geometric theoretic method with Lozoskii …1.>

Towards Health Equity In Connecticut: The Role Of Social Inequality And The Impact Of Covid-19, Kelly Davila, Mark Abraham, Camille Seaberry
Reports
In January 2020, the first confirmed case of COVID-19 was reported in the United States, with Connecticut recording its first case by March 8. As of the time of writing, tens of thousands of Connecticut residents have tested positive for the illness, and thousands have died, with the true number of affected individuals likely being much higher. Early data indicate that Black, Latino, and Indigenous communities are experiencing disproportionately higher rates of infection and serious complications. In Connecticut, Black and Latino individuals have died at higher age-adjusted rates than white individuals, and nursing home residents account for more than half …

We report discovery of an established population of the Asian swamp eel Amphipnous cuchia (Hamilton, 1822) in Bayou St. John, an urban waterway in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. This fish, commonly referred to as cuchia (kuchia), is a member of the family Synbranchidae and is native to southern and southeastern Asia. Recently-used synonyms include Monopterus cuchia and Ophichthys cuchia. We collected both adult and young-of-year cuchia from dense mats of littoral vegetation at several locations in Bayou St. John. Presence of multiple age and size classes is the first documented evidence of reproduction of this species outside of its native …

Breast cancer has become one of the biggest concerns for oncologists in the past few decades because of its unpredictable etiopathology and nonavailability of personalized translational medicine. The number of women getting affected by breast cancer has increased dramatically, owing to lifestyle and environmental changes. Besides, the development of multidrug resistance has become a challenge in the therapeutic management of breast cancer. Studies reveal that the use of monotherapy is not effective in the management of breast cancer due to high toxicity and the development of resistance. Combination therapies, such as radiation therapy with adjuvant therapy, endocrine therapy with chemotherapy, …

Rifampin (RF) is metabolized in the liver into an active metabolite 25-desacetylrifampin and excreted almost equally via biliary and renal routes. Various influx and efflux transporters influence RF disposition during hepatic uptake and biliary excretion. Evidence has also shown that Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and Vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphisms are associated with tuberculosis (TB). Hence, genetic polymorphisms of metabolizing enzymes, drug transporters and/or their transcriptional regulators and VDR and its pathway regulators may affect the pharmacokinetics of RF. In this narrative review, we aim to identify literature that has explored the influence of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of genes …

The disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color in the United States and immense vulnerabilities in lower-income countries has revealed a global health reality that is often overshadowed by decades of progress in overall global health, with new lows in child and maternal deaths every year, more people with HIV receiving access to lifesaving anti-retroviral therapy, and rising life expectancies. That reality is one of vast national and global inequalities, with the lived experiences of members of marginalized populations far removed from laudatory health headlines.
Here, we propose an ambitious agenda to bridge the gap between progress in global …

Immunohistochemical Expression Of P16 Protein And Tgf Β1 In Mice Liver Exposed To Fumonisin B1, Sinai W. Mohammed, Basim M. Khashman, Noorulhuda F. Khalaf, Munira Ch. Ismeeal, Maysaa Kadhim Al-Malkey
Baghdad Science Journal
Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is a mycotoxin produced in some grains (mainly corn) by Fusarium species. Due to a structural similarity between FB1 and sphinganine, sphingolipids metabolism is inhibited. Such inhibition plays a critical role in cell to cell singling and structure of lipoprotein; therefore FB1 has been suggested to have a relationship with human and animal cancer. This research is planned to study the effect of FB1 on male mice at two doses (20 and 30 µg/ ml) on the expression of TGF-β1 and p16 in liver cells. Three groups of Swiss albino male mice; each group was orally administrated …

Bones, Burials, And The Riddle Of Truth: Reconstructing The Past Through What Has Been Left Behind, Jelena M. Begonja
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Mortuary archaeology is known to be the study of human remains and burials. The primary focus of this work has been to study all of the elements associated in burials to learn more about the burial practices and rituals in a group’s culture, however, there is much more potential in studying burial sites than just learning about a group’s burial rituals and practices. This thesis will demonstrate that it is indeed possible to make different inferences about the rest of people’s daily lives, and the truth, based from materials found in studying burials alone. For some groups without much existing …

The UMETRICS database (Universities: Measuring the Effects of Research on Innovation, Competitiveness, and Science) contains rich information on grants from sponsored federal and non-federal research for 32 universities over a 15-year period. It is hosted at IRIS (Institute for Research on Innovation and Science, University of Michigan) and serves as a rich source of university administrative data; however, it does not contain information on research fields. Categorizing grants data by research field can help to measure results of investment in research and science and provide evidence for the data-driven policy-making; yet administrative data often lacks this type of categorization. Dynamic Optimal Control For Multi-Chemotherapy Treatment Of Dual Listeriosis Infection In Human And Animal Population, B. Echeng Bassey
Dynamic Optimal Control For Multi-Chemotherapy Treatment Of Dual Listeriosis Infection In Human And Animal Population, B. Echeng Bassey
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Following the rising cases of high hospitalization versa-vise incessant fatality rates and the close affinity of listeriosis with HIV/AIDS infection, which often emanates from food-borne pathogens associated with listeria monocytogenes infection, this present paper seek and formulated as penultimate model, an 8-Dimensional classical mathematical Equations which directly accounted for the biological interplay of dual listeriosis virions with dual set of population (human and animals). The model was studied under multiple chemotherapies (trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole with a combination of penicillin or ampicillin and/or gentamicin). Using ODE’s, the positivity and boundedness of system solutions was investigated with model presented as an optimal control problem. …
